Viacom Acquires VidCon

It’s official: Viacom has announced the acquisition VidCon, host of the world’s biggest conference dedicated to YouTube and online video.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. It was first reported on Monday that Viacom was near a deal to acquire the confab, which began in 2010. UTA, which represents VidCon, brokered the deal with Viacom. UTA will continue to rep VidCon, overseeing sponsorship sales globally and helping to expand the conference internationally.

The move is part of Viacom’s efforts to expand beyond its TV legacy into next-generation entertainment platforms, as well as to expand the media conglomerate’s live-events business. The acquisition also raises the prospect of VidCon coverage and related programming being carried on Viacom’s cable nets, which include Nickelodeon and MTV. In recent years, Nickelodeon has had a sizeable presence sizable presence on the show floor at VidCon events.

VidCon was founded by YouTube’s popular Vlogbrothers, John and Hank Green. Each year, VidCon attracts thousands of attendees to the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California for four days of events, all aimed at creators, fans, and executives within the online video world. Eight years after it was founded by Vlogbrothers co-hosts Hank and John Green, VidCon is the preeminent event of its kind, at least within its own industry; In 2017, VidCon’s flagship event in Anaheim attracted more than 30,000 attendees, 80 sponsors, and 45 exhibitors.

“VidCon has become the foremost gathering place for the passionate online video community, and the access to talent, experts and education that VidCon provides for attendees is unparalleled,” said Jason Jordan, Viacom’s Executive Vice President (EVP) of multiplatform strategy and operations, said in announcing the pact.

The explosion of online video content internationally has prompted organizers to introduce editions in Amsterdam and Australia. VidCon Europe will take place March 22-24 in Amsterdam and VidCom Australia will take place Sept. 1-2 in Melbourne. With the acquisition, Viacom sees an opportunity to expand the conference franchise footprint to new international and domestic markets.

Under the deal, VidCon will remain a standalone subsidiary operating independently, according to Viacom. VidCon will continue to be led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jim Louderback and remain in its current offices in Montana. Co-founder Hank Green will continue be involved and work closely with the team.

“I’m so happy that we found such a strong, successful, and progressive company to give our team the stability and resources needed to make bold moves at home and grow what we’re doing internationally,” Hank Green said in a statement, adding that Viacom “has decades of expertise creating incredible live events for fans.”

Over the past year, Viacom has been ratcheting up its focus on social media and internet video — an attempt to reach Gen Z and millennial audiences, demos that have been at the core of its TV properties.

VidCon will continue to be based in Green’s home state of Montana. Jim Louderback, who ascended to the company’s CEO position last year, will retain his role after the deal is finalized. UTA, which has been helping VidCon from a strategic and sponsorship sales standpoint since 2012, will also maintain its role post the acquisition.

The financial terms of Viacom’s acquisition have not been shared publicly at this time.

Viacom's latest acquisition will allow the business to gain access to digital-native influencers and their passionate fans. The conglomerate previously expanded into online video hiring veteran exec Kelly Day - previously chief business officer for Awesomeness — to run a newly formed digital studio dedicated to short-form content. “We’re huge fans of the VidCon team, and we share the same enthusiasm for the power of connecting talented creators with their incredible fan communities,” said Day in a statement. “This team has built an unprecedented live experience that brings together the global online video community in celebration of the people and platforms shaping the future of content, and we’re excited to join forces as we look to expand our slate of original digital programming and partnerships.”

Last month Viacom acquired Whosay, an influencer marketing firm incubated by CAA that specializes in targeting young audiences online with branded content.

Viacom Acquires VidCon, Boosting Live Event and Digital Businesses

In a move that will accelerate its participation and investment in next-generation platforms and expand its focus on live events, Viacom has acquired VidCon, host of the world’s largest multi-day conference for the global online community.

VidCon – which will remain a stand-alone entity and retain its senior leadership team – will be able to considerably expand its global reach with the start-up spirit that has allowed it to flourish.

“VidCon has become the foremost gathering place for the passionate online video community, and the access to talent, experts and education that VidCon provides for attendees is unparalleled,” said Jason Jordan, Viacom executive vice president of Multiplatform Strategy and Operations. “We’re excited to partner with the team to help achieve their vision and expand VidCon’s reach around the world while maintaining the grassroots energy and authenticity that makes the experience so unique and special to so many.”

Moving Viacom to the center of the online video landscape

The announcement follows Viacom’s November launch of Viacom Digital Studios under President Kelly Day and last month’s acquisition of influence marketing firm WHOSAY, underscoring the company’s push onto the next-generation digital platforms at the center of our fans’ lives.

Even as VidCon expands the reach of its eponymous events, the company’s capabilities will both complement and bolster Viacom’s ongoing digital efforts.

“We’re huge fans of the VidCon team, and we share the same enthusiasm for the power of connecting talented creators with their incredible fan communities,” said Day. “This team has built an unprecedented live experience that brings together the global online video community in celebration of the people and platforms shaping the future of content, and we’re excited to join forces as we look to expand our slate of original digital programming and partnerships.”

Boosting Viacom’s growing live event portfolio

Last year, Viacom launched Comedy Central’s inaugural ClusterFest, which attracted 40,000 fans and rave reviews. The BET Experience brought in 165,000 fans. Paramount Network’s Bellator MMA visited New York’s Madison Square Garden for the first time.

This was all part of Viacom CEO Bob Bakish’s long-term strategy to considerably increase the number, reach and impact of live events in the company’s portfolio. VidCon fits perfectly within those plans.

With more than 30,000 attendees and 80-plus sponsors (including, for many years, Viacom), at its flagship Anaheim event, VidCon has become the largest multi-day conference of its kind and cemented itself as the premier event for the worldwide online video community. And while VidCon has already carried this momentum into events in Amsterdam and Melbourne, Viacom’s global network of platforms and properties give it the resources to supercharge that reach both internationally and within the United States.

“I couldn’t imagine a better partner to help VidCon continue its mission of democratizing the creative economy around the world,” said Jim Louderback, CEO of VidCon. “Viacom’s expansive reach across all of our key constituents will give us the opportunity to expand our global footprint more rapidly. We’re also looking forward to their expertise in pioneering and executing live fan-first events – from the Video Music Awards and BET Experience to Comedy Central’s ClusterFest – as we continue to make VidCon a life-changing experience for those that create and love online video.”

VidCon will remain a standalone subsidiary and voice for democratizing the creative economy

From its offices in Missoula, Montana, Louderback and co-founder Hank Green lead a 20-person team that has established an important meeting place, safe space, and community-driven destination for online video creators and their fans. They have long partnered closely with United Talent Agency, who has pushed global sponsorship sales to maximize the organization’s visibility and impact.

None of this will change (though Louderback will report to Viacom’s Day and Jordan) – Viacom will simply provide more resources and a bigger microphone to allow VidCon to continue nurturing the online video community and ecosystem.

“I’m so happy that we found such a strong, successful, and progressive company to give our team the stability and resources needed to make bold moves at home and grow what we’re doing internationally,” said Green. “Viacom has decades of expertise creating incredible live events for fans, and we are building something truly unique by blending that with our team’s deep care and passion for the community and culture of online video. I’m so excited to be part of this team and to continue our work connecting people, providing amazing experiences and helping creators create.”

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- VStar Entertainment Group and Nickelodeon's PAW Patrol Live! "Race to the Rescue" tour is on a roll and ticket sales continue at a strong pace throughout the US and around the world, including multiple sold out performances. The tour is scheduled to visit 90 U.S. cities, with 36 currently on sale, and it will kick-off the international leg of the tour in Canada, Australia and Mexico beginning February 2017. Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, which airs on Nickelodeon and is produced by Spin Master Entertainment, the merriment-inducing musical adventure captivated audiences during its debut in late October in Evansville, IN and has been a must-see for kids and families in the first few markets. A first look at the show and its unique costumes can be seen in photos here.

"There has been an incredible amount of excitement around this tour, and the fun part for us is seeing strong audience enthusiasm," said Eric Grilly, Chief Executive Officer, VStar Entertainment Group. "Our three performances at the Cannon Center in Memphis sold out, and the show's debut weekend in Evansville, Indiana was the highest-grossing family show at that venue in five years. Behind the scenes, a tremendous amount of preparation goes into a production like this, and it's wonderful to receive this kind of reception so early on in the tour."

"PAW Patrol Live! "Race to the Rescue" brings an exciting original story to life through unique costumes, dynamic staging and original music compositions that have the audience out of their seats and singing along from beginning to end," said Gerald Raines, Senior Vice President, Nickelodeon Global Recreation Business Development. "We are thrilled this production is resonating with audiences and that kids and parents across the U.S. and around the globe are clamoring to have the beloved pack of PAW Patrol pups visit their hometown."

PAW Patrol Live! "Race to the Rescue" features innovative costuming. Using Bunraku, puppetry elements are built into costumes worn by performers to create life-size pups that wag their tails, blink their eyes, move their mouths and engage the audience throughout their adventure. The costume design brings a fun, realistic parallel between the animated series and the live show. Each pup's all-important Pup Pack and vehicle also makes an appearance during the show.

Nickelodeon Australia Presenters Luke and Wyatt Talk About SLIMEFEST 2014; Cody Simpson Slimes Younger Sister Alli Simpson

To celebrate Nickelodeon Australia holding the networks 3rd annual SLIMEFEST event, SLIMEFEST 2014, the BIGGEST kid-powered, star filled family slimefest of the year, which this year is going to be bigger, better and SLIMIER than ever before and feature the most slime of all time, this weekend in Sydney and Melbourne, The West Australian has unveiled a exclusive interview with Nickelodeon Australia presenters Luke Ryan and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd, who will be hosting SLIMEFEST 2014, which you can read in the article below!

As part of their interview, Luke and Wyatt talk about hosting Nickelodeon, "Camp Orange" and SLIMEFEST, talk about how Nickelodeon is working on increasingly creative ways to deliver slime (a slime cannon is in discussions), and hint that SLIMEFEST could be visiting Perth, their hometown, as part of Nick's fourth annual SLIMEFEST event, SLIMEFEST 2015!

Additionally, in a separate article, The Daily Telegraph Australia is reporting that to further celebrate Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST 2014, Cody Simpson slimed his younger sister Alli Simpson with Nickelodeon's famous green slime in Sydney ahead of their performances at SLIMEFEST 2014, where Alli will be performing live for the first time ever! Alli also hints that she'll be getting slimed at SLIMEFEST 2014!

From The West Australian via Yahoo! News Australia:
It could get messy

Luke Ryan and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd. Picture: Mark Metcalfe. The West Australian.

For the past five years, West Aussie entertainers Luke Ryan and Wyatt Nixon-Lloyd have had a blast as the hosts of Nickelodeon's children's game show Camp Orange. So when I suggest the now 30-year-old duo may be getting a little old school for the network's primary school demographic, the WAAPA-trained performers and best mates burst into laughter.

"Well I didn't think that, but I do now, thanks," Nixon-Lloyd says in mock shock.

"Yeah, we're getting old," Ryan agrees. "I just turned 30 and that's a scary age in kids' entertainment! When you turn 30 it's like 'jeepers creepers!' But the thing about Nickelodeon is that they're so supportive of us. They allow us to have that Peter Pan thing going on, where we don't have to grow up at work. We just get to be big idiots."

Big idiots is exactly what they will get to be, again, as Nickelodeon's third annual Slimefest gushes into Sydney and Melbourne this weekend with more concerts, games and icky sticky slime than ever before. More than 9000 screaming kids will get to enjoy free rides, games and non-stop performances from the likes of Ricki-Lee, Dami Im, Cody Simpson, Alli Simpson, Justice Crew, Sabrina Carpenter, The Collective, Timomatic and Savage.

"This is going to be the experience of a lifetime," said The X-Factor winner Im. "I'm not afraid to get messy, bring it on!"

Perth viewers will be able to catch the best bits of all the gooey action with a 90-minute special on Monday.

"We're really pumped because we're doing two cities this year," says Nixon-Lloyd, who has co-hosted the sludge-fest with WAAPA theatre arts graduate Ryan for the past two years in Sydney. "We're doubling the fun and we've got a great mix of local acts and great international names. It's going to be good clean messy fun!"

The emphasis, Nixon-Lloyd says, is on mess, with the annual slime-a-palooza aiming to break the Guinness World Record for the most kids slimed - ever!

"When we've been doing rehearsals, we have to keep stopping as they bring in forklifts carrying these big megalitre containers full of slime," Manjimup-raised Nixon-Lloyd explains. "And they bring in unending supplies of the stuff. After 70 or so containers I thought 'yeah, that's enough,' and then they bring in 70 more! So yeah, it's a lot."

"And in past Slimefests," Geraldton-raised Ryan adds, "the goo was distributed in inventive ways, such as a slime guns, a dunk tank and a slime shower. But Nickelodeon is working on increasingly creative ways to deliver dollops of goop. A slime cannon is in discussions.

"And there's a real possibility that we could tour it to our home town of Perth next year, because I really want to see that new Perth Arena covered in slime."

The duo made the move from Melbourne - where they were often roomies - to Sydney last year to be closer to Foxtel and Nickelodeon's HQ.

"It's been really great doing Camp Orange, lots of web stuff and Slimefest. We're involved in all the writing of things and are much more hands on," says Nixon-Lloyd.

The pair also perform various hosting gigs and stand-up comedy as solo and comedy duos. As for Camp Orange, there's no stopping the veteran hosts.

"It's just so much fun to do," Nixon-Lloyd says. "It's all about messing around and being a big kid.

"It's not mean-spirited. It's just great fun. We love doing it."

Nickelodeon Australia Announces Cody Simpson, Justice Crew And Timomatic To Perform At SLIMEFEST 2014

Nickelodeon Australia has unveiled the first three aweslime performers who will be performing at this year's SLIMEFEST event, the BIGGEST kid-powered, star filled family slimefest of the year, Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST 2014, which this year is going to be bigger, better and SLIMIER than ever before and feature the most slime of all time!

Nick Australia has announced in a post on their official Facebook profile page, facebook.com/NickelodeonAustralia, that the Australian pop singer Cody Simpson, the Sydney-based all-male hip-hop dance & pop music group and "Australia's Got Talent" winners Justice Crew, and the Australian singer-songwriter and dancer Timomatic will perform at SLIMEFEST 2014!

"I can't wait to come back to Australia to get completely drenched in the green stuff and celebrate Slimefest with my home country," Cody Simpson said. "Aussie kids really know how to get messy and have fun." Cody Simpson's hits include "On My Mind" and the Australian singer currently has five million Twitter followers. Cody Simpson got a epic joint slime shower with Austin Mahone after NickHeads voted both of them slime-worthy at the Nickelodeon "Kids' Choice Awards 2014" in March 2014 and was recently exclusively interviewed by Nickelodeon Germany presenters Laura Garde And Sascha Quade during his recent only performance in Germany for "Nickelodeon Alaaarm", which also took fans and viewers behind-the-scenes of his concert.

Australia's dance troupe Justice Crew started from humble beginnings in Sydney's western suburbs and the seven-member outfit became one of 2010's hottest talking points when they won "Australia's Got Talent". With the series win, they collected the $250,000 victor's prize cheque and a contract with Sony Music. The troupe tipped cash into a band fund and invested in Justice Academy Inc, a program which helps disadvantaged young Australians work on their confidence, self-expression and team-building skills by hosting free dance workshops and classes. All seven members are hands-on at the Justice Academy, which uses music and dance to empower future generations. Age is no barrier. In 2010, the Academy's 5- 9-year-old graduates competed in the 2010 LA World Hip Hop competition under the name "Little Justice". Justice Crew have performed around Australia and recently travelled the US supporting Pitbull and Ke$ha. Justice Crew recently broke the record as the longest running Australian act at No. 1 on the ARIA singles charts for their hit single, "Que Sera".

Soul star Timomatic (Tim Omaji) is a Nigerian-born Australian singer-songwriter and dancer. Timomatic rose to fame as a contestant on "So You Think You Can Dance" (Australia) in 2009 and placed seventh in the competition. In 2011, he appeared as a contestant on the fifth season of "Australia's Got Talent" and was placed third. Later that year, Timomatic signed with Sony Music Australia and released his first single, "Set It Off", in November 2011, which peaked at number two on the ARIA Singles Chart and was certified four times platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association. Timomatic recently guest-starred in the tenth season of Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand's adventure reality series for best friends, "Camp Orange: Force 10".

To make sure that their third annual SLIMEFEST event is the biggest, bestest and and slimiest SLIMEFEST ever to give attendees the slime of their life, Nick AU will take over the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Sydney (SYD), New South Wales (NSW) on Friday 26th September 2014 to hold their first SLIMEFEST concert, then will be taking all the slimy action on the road to Melbourne (MEL) to hold a second SLIMEFEST concert at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Parkville, Victoria (VIC)! Each concert will feature two SLIMEFEST shows, a morning show at 11:00am and a evening show at 6:00pm. Tickets go on sale on Ticketmaster Australia from Monday 14th July 2014 at 9:00am.

Nickelodeon Australia Announces SLIMEFEST 2014 Venues; Tickets Now On Pre-sale

Nickelodeon Australia has announced and revealed more aweslime details and news about the BIGGEST kid-powered, star filled family slimefest of the year, Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST 2014, which this year is going to be bigger, better and SLIMIER than ever before and feature the most slime of all time!

This year, Nickelodeon is going to double the music, the stars and the tonnes, and tonnes AND TONNES of Nickelodeon's world famous slime, because this year, Nickelodeon Australia will be bringing SLIMEFEST to Melbourne and Sydney to hold TWO SLIMEFEST concerts, Australia's first music festival just for kids, tweens and teenagers! The Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST 2014 ticket pre-sale is now on! Simply visit Ticketmaster Australia and enter codeword: NICK to buy your tickets today!

To make sure that their third annual SLIMEFEST event is the biggest, bestest and and slimiest SLIMEFEST ever to give attendees the slime of their life, Nick AU will take over the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Sydney (SYD), New South Wales (NSW) on Friday 26th September 2014, then will be taking all the slimy action on the road to Melbourne (MEL) to hold a SLIMEFEST concert at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Parkville, Victoria (VIC)! Each concert will feature two SLIMEFEST shows, a morning show at 11:00am and a evening show at 6:00pm.

The format of the show and the advertised performers are the same for both the morning and the evening performances of SLIMEFEST. However, there may be some unannounced special guests who are only able to attend either the morning or evening performance. But whichever show you go to, you are guaranteed it will still be the slime of your life!

This year, the SLIMEFEST experience will be maxed to the limit! Not only will slime fans see an awesome show, but there will be an outdoor carnival experience for NickHeads to enjoy before and after the show. This will be located inside the entry area, before the entrance to the venue. The outdoor carnival will feature games, rides, food, drinks and SlimeFest merchandise available to purchase and participate in, along with some great interactive activities to see and do. Entry to the SLIMEFEST interactive area is free and is open to the general public. Costs for rides, merchandise, food and drinks will apply.

Nickelodeon Australia's production crew will have cameras and will be shooting during both the 11.00am and 6.00pm shows and the best bits will go to air on Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand for viewers at home on Monday 29th September 2014. Remember to tune in to see all your favourite parts of the show!

Nickelodeon is offering 3 types of tickets for NickHeads to purchase to attend SLIMEFEST 2014:

Premium Mosh Area: This is a KIDS-ONLY SLIME ZONE (children aged between the ages of 8-15 only). Grown-ups will not be allowed access into this area and for safety reasons kids MUST be over 140cm high to be granted entrance into the Mosh. According to Nickelodeon's slime-inator forecaster, SLIMEFEST attendees in the Premium Mosh Area can expect a high expectancy of slime.

Standing Floor: This area is available for kids and grown-ups and is recommended for kids aged between 8 -15 years of age and a minimum height of 140cm. For grown-ups, if you have purchased a ticket to the Standing Floor area there will be an area allocated for you at the back to stand in. This is a slime zone, however not everyone will be slimed especially towards the outer edges. Grown-ups - if you are in the seated area in the back there is low expectancy of a slime covering. Adults are requested to stand near the back of the venue to give younger NickHeads the best access.

Seated Area: These tickets are suitable for all kids (no matter what your height!) and grown-ups. Patrons who hold seated tickets will queue and enter the venue separately to those holding standing tickets. This area is a slime-free zone (slime and safety regulations). Please do be aware though that regardless of seating allocation all attendees may receive incidental
brushes with slime as Nickelodeon will be releasing thousands of litres of the green goo and cannot guarantee where it may land!

It gets pretty messy in the Mosh and Standing Area so it's a good idea to bring a change of clothes and a spare towel for the trip home. If you are thinking about wearing your best white shirt or fave clothes, then think again! It's best to wear your not-so-fave clothes just in case you get super slimey!

This year for the first time ever NickHeads can have a once in a lifetime experience with their favourite celebrity by purchasing a meet and greet ticket at www.ticketmaster.com.au. Included with their meet and greet, NickHeads will be able to go backstage and get up close and personal with their favourite big time celebrities. They will sign your favourite piece of merchandise and jump in a photo with you. Don't forget to bring your camera!

NickHeads can also pre-purchase official Nickelodeon SLIMEFEST 2014 merchandise, including a special edition Slimefest t-shirt, souvenir lanyard and silicone wristband, from the events listing on Ticketmaster AU! Merchandise Packs will be posted out directly to your home within 30 days of being purchased, so you can be dressed in the coolest SLIMEFEST gear before you arrive on the day! NickHeads can also purchase exclusive SLIMEFEST 2014 products on the day of each event!

Nickelodeon Australia will be announcing more big SLIMEFEST 2014, including who will be performing at this years SLIMEFEST events, in the coming weeks.

Now, Foxtel Play gives even more Australians who might not be able to access the core service the freedom and flexibility to enjoy Foxtel across multiple connected devices and at price points to suit different budgets and tastes.”

Jim Rudder, Foxtel Executive Director of Product added, “Foxtel Play broadens our internet TV service and gives customers a Foxtel internet TV offering across a host of devices. We’ve also had fantastic feedback to Foxtel Go since its launch and have responded by upping the number and type of devices customers can use to access it.”
