Bob Bakish Calls Pluto TV the "Cornerstone" of Viacom's Direct-to-Consumer Strategy
The Viacom CEO called Pluto TV the "cornerstone of our direct-to-consumer strategy."
Bob Bakish acknowledged Tuesday (February 26, 2019) that Viacom "kind of took it on the chin for two years with respect to distribution revenue" by making the decision not to do the sort of big, bundled licensing deals with Netflix and the other streamers that its competitors were doing.
Bakish said Viacom, where he is Chief Executive Officer (CEO), "curtailed" licensing content to Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) services in 2017 because it didn't want to damage the cable TV ecosystem, even in exchange for short-term profits. Therefore, Viacom has "warehoused a set to rights" that will go to Pluto TV, the ad-supported streaming service it agreed to buy in January for $340 million.
The CEO said Pluto will be getting access to Viacom's library but that its latest and greatest content is still reserved for paying cable and satellite subscribers.
More Nick: Viacom Expands Presence In the Live Streaming Space with fuboTV and Charter Partnerships!
"It's important to note that this is a global opportunity" even though Pluto for now is largely focused on the U.S. "They just launched in Germany and the U.K. at the end of calendar 2018, but with Viacom we have operating footprint that is truly globe-spanning," he said.
Bakish called Pluto "a powerful new driver" of business as it seeks new deals with operators that carry its channels, like Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1 and more, because some will also opt to distribute Pluto.
"And by the way, the last thing it is, is it's the cornerstone of our direct-to-consumer strategy...it's a free service that is the entry point into that ecosystem, but we will upsell targeted B2C products above that — Noggin, Comedy Central, a new Nickelodeon product," he said.
Bakish, speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco, also raved about the hiring of Brian Robbins in October to head Nickelodeon where he noted a strong slate of new shows and also that the ratings declines at the children's network are "significantly less bad than they were before."
The turnaround at the Paramount film and TV studio has been going great, with seven quarters of improvement in operating income and is on track to turn a profit in fiscal 2019, Bakish said.
He said the BET-branded movie What Men Want will likely make $60 million domestically (it's at $45 million now) and predicted, "we're going to make nice money on that."
Bumblebee is at $459 million worldwide and will be "solidly profitable" while the previous movie in the Transformers franchise lost $100 million for Paramount, Bakish said.
On the studio's TV side, "it didn't exist four years ago, crossed $400 million in 2018 and it should grow on the order of 50 percent in 2019. Importantly, it's not just delivering shows, it's producing hits," he said, noting the popularity of Jack Ryan on Amazon.

Director, Animator Ron Campbell Shares Artistic Memories of Beatles Shows, Iconic Cartoons
Television did not arrive in Australia until 1956. Ron Campbell was born in Australia on the day after Christmas in 1939, which dictated that he discover most cartoons as a young boy at local cinemas, usually on Saturday afternoons. Speaking to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal by telephone from his Arizona home, Campbell, 79, recalled, “Each Saturday, most children where I lived in Australia had a shilling in their pocket so they could enjoy an afternoon of cartoons.”

Writer, animator and director Ron Campbell labored on the Beatles’ television show, and animated more than 12 minutes of Beatles film “Yellow Submarine.” He will make appearances with more than 50 original paintings Jan. 25-27 at the Tornado Gallery, 1822 Buddy Holly Ave. [PHOTO PROVIDED BY NICK FOLLGER]
As a child, he was confused by the animation process. “I figured out where Hopalong Cassidy was from,” he said. “But I brought up cartoon characters to my grandmother and asked where they lived. She told me, “Ronnie, cartoons are not real.
“Those are drawings.”
“Well,” he reflected, “if a 6-year-old boy could experience an epiphany, that was it for me. It was the most memorable moment of my childhood. I said, 'Do you mean, when I make drawings, they can actually come alive? That sense of wonder carried me through my teenage years, to art school and later to the creation of my own studio in America.”
It did not take much effort to lure Campbell to the United States, where he would work as a animator on the teams that created many iconic television programs, as well as key sequences in The Beatles’ acclaimed animated film Yellow Submarine. In his book Up Periscope, Yellow Submarine, film producer Al Brodax credited Campbell with “saving the movie and tying it all together at the last minute.”
Pixar co-founder John Lasseter also credits Yellow Submarine with helping feature-length animation gain acceptance as an art form.

Professional writer, animator and director Ron Campbell depicts The Beatles at Shea Stadium. Campbell will discuss his animating and directing Beatles sequences Jan. 25-27 at the Tornado Gallery, 1822 Buddy Holly Ave.
Earlier, Campbell animated and directed 39 episodes of hit Saturday morning animated half-hour series The Beatles. This series was the very first to feature animated versions of living people. It aired in the United States from 1965 to 1969, although the latter two seasons consisted of repeats.
Still, this Australian, who grew up loving to draw, worked on Beatles animation relatively early in his career, likely not foreseeing the inherent importance.
Upon retiring after working in animation for 50 years and one month, Campbell intended to remain active. He immediately began painting watercolors of characters from the iconic series he had helped animate.
The touring Ron Campbell’s Beatles Cartoon Art Show will stop in Lubbock in Texas on Jan. 25-27 at the Tornado Gallery, 1822 Buddy Holly Ave. Campbell’s personal appearances at the Tornado Gallery are scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 25, noon to 6 p.m. Jan. 26, and noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 27. Call 687-1644 for more details
From Lubbock, the show will move to Amarillo where Campbell will appear from 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 29-30 at the Featured Fine Art Gallery, 3701 Plains Boulevard, Space 72-C. More information is available online at artsinthesunset.org.
Update (2/26) - Ron Campbell will be exhibiting and selling his work on March 5 and 6 at Art Obscura, 3206 Harrelson St., NM!:
Time: 4 to 8 p.m. (Both days)
Date: Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday March 6
Place: Art Obscura, 3206 Harrelson St.
More info: 575-494-7256 or www.artobscuragallery.com
For many, the Lubbock appearance simply will be an opportunity to meet the artist, perhaps request a signature or photograph, and peruse paintings depicting many animated characters he helped bring to life as his animation studio contracted with Nickelodeon, Hanna-Barbera, Disney and more. Those iconic figures include not only The Beatles, but also Rugrats, Rocket Power, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Popeye, Krazy Kat, Beetle Bailey, The Smurfs, The Jetsons, The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, Where Are You?, Winnie the Pooh, George of the Jungle, DarkWing Duck, Duck Tales, Goof Troop, Ed, Edd & Eddy and more.
A career highlight arrived when Campbell’s Hollywood studio, Ron Campbell Films Inc., produced animation for PBS children’s television series The Big Blue Marble, which won an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for Excellence in Children’s Programming.
No original cels, per se, are included in the touring show, although Campbell will hang “a couple specially-produced cel-like images.”
But tour producer Scott Segelbaumnoted, “Animators did not do cels when producing movies or TV shows. Animators draw all the various movements, then send them to be Xeroxed onto cels, where the ink and paint department colors them in.”
Instead, said Segelbaum, the Lubbock show finds Campbell exhibiting more than 50 original, colorful paintings. The displayed art, Segelbaum said, ranges in price from $295 to $5,000. Signed posters are only $40.
“Ron uses watercolor-based, bright-colored dyes to give the look of an animated cel,” the producer added.
He confirmed that Campbell will sign simple autographs for fans at no charge, “with some exceptions, one being he will not sign printed copies of his own art work.”
Tornado Gallery co-owner Larry Simmons admitted he was initially unsure about hosting. “I was unfamiliar with Ron’s name, but very familiar with his work and TV shows he worked on. After all, I grew up in the '60s! I was worried whether enough people were animation fans, but just kept thinking we don’t get many chances like this. I’m such a fan. I mean, it’s the Beatles cartoon!”
The only early work for animators in Australia was reanimating commercials.
“American and English products could not be advertised on Australian TV,” said Campbell. “They had to be re-done, which of course helped me enormously.”
Campbell studied at the Swinburne Art Institute in Australia for a short time. By 1958, at age 19, he was animating professionally. In fact, Campbell decided to learn as much as he could about filmmaking. Brodax hired Campbell to help animate Krazy Kat and Beetle Bailey in Australia, then called him with an offer to leave his home, fly to Hollywood and work on a cartoon show about The Beatles.
With all of his research, study and experience, Campbell was considered “the old guy” on the Beatles crew, although only 24. Next leap: Brodax telling him, “Ron, we really want you to direct.”
Campbell stayed in Hollywood while Yellow Submarine was produced in England. He and partner Duane Crowther, now deceased, worked on that movie’s Sea of Time sequence, and scenes involving the Blue Meanie, Nowhere Man and more. Campbell is credited with contributing 12 minutes of Yellow Submarine.
Campbell never met the Beatles, but said, “I heard a story about the Beatles screening the TV show in London. Ringo [original voice of Thomas the Tank Engine] walked out and said, ‘I think they made me a goof.’ Yeah, we did. Every group of four needs a goof for comedy relief.”
That said, years later all four Beatles praised the animated TV show and Yellow Submarine for aiding their career.
However, Campbell did not like every project. He never was a fan of animating The Harlem Globetrotters, saying, “It seems like you always had to have a guy waving his arm up and down, bouncing (dribbling) a damn ball.”
Campbell also stressed that he never worked at another studio after opening his own, not even Disney. “I never worked as an employee for an American company. I was always independent, even doing storyboard work.”
Retirement has not found him “painting flowers in my garden.” The artist prefers “to paint what I knew. Then behold, some people wanted to buy them. Although now it takes me five minutes to add my signature. ... On one piece, I signed my name using colors. The customer became excited and told people. Now I do it all the time.”
He usually tours just one week of each month. Of course, he also paints during tour stops.
Campbell said he enjoys talking to adults who were children watching Saturday morning cartoons in the 1960s. “These people,” he said, remember when they controlled the TV. Parents were asleep upstairs, and children had freedom to change channels and watch Scooby-Doo if they wanted.”
He views his painting as therapeutic, as well, pointing out, “I am almost 80. I suspect these painted characters and discussions may all play a role in keeping me alive.”

Viacom Has Held Talks to Acquire Ad-Supported Streaming Services
Viacom has recently held acquisition talks with two free, ad-supported streaming video services as it looks to expand the digital reach of its entertainment properties, Deadline reports!
The media company is understood to have approached Tubi TV, a free service partly owned by MGM and Lionsgate; and Pluto TV, a Los Angeles-based company that has attracted investments from Scripps Networks Interactive, Sky, Third Wave Capital Partners and Samsung Venture Investment Corp., the venture-capital arm of Samsung.
It’s unclear whether these discussions will result in a deal, sources say. Pluto TV was exhibiting last week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where its executives have been touting its growth and $200 million annual run rate. One source said the company’s not for sale.
The Information first reported the acquisition talks, which Deadline independently confirmed.
Viacom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Bakish has spoken publicly about positioning the company for an increasingly fragmented media landscape where one-size-fits-all cable bundles are fraying.
In remarks at the Citi 2019 Global TMT West Conference last week, Bakish talked about Viacom’s variety of offerings in the direct-to-consumer space, from so-called “skinny” program bundles, like Philo, to niche digital offerings like Noggin, Nickelodeon's preschool SVOD product that’s distributed through apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play store, as well as via the Amazon channel store and on the Roku platform.
Viacom’s also busy developing programs for digital distribution, such as Nickelodeon's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender reboot for Netflix, and the reboot of the MTV reality series The Real World for Facebook Watch. Viacom also recently sold Nickelodeon's Pinky Malinky to Netflix. Ad-supported VOD is another way to reach broad audiences with a free offering that could potentially entice viewers to purchase subscription products.
“We believe working with some of our distributors including in the AVOD space, ad-supported video on demand, both as a standalone product and as a funnel and entry point for an upgrade path of various subscription products, including potentially big bundle,” said Bakish at the Citi conference. “So, that’s the way we’re playing it. We’re doing it in a capital-light way. We’re not going to go out and spend X double-digit billion dollars acquiring a company.”
Viacom’s evolving digital strategy comes at a time of growing competition in the streaming space. Disney and AT&T’s WarnerMedia are both preparing to launch Netflix-like services later this year. NBCUniversal has also revealed that it’s preparing to launch a new streaming platform.
Some players, like Roku, Pluto TV and Tubi TV, are betting that consumers will be able to afford a limited number of subscription services, and will be looking to fill out their viewing with free TV programs.

Viacom CEO Says He's Mulling Small Acquisition Targets
Also: At a Las Vegas conference, Bob Bakish said he'd "abstain" from commenting on a potential merger with CBS.
Bob Bakish on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 squashed a rumor that Viacom is looking to purchase some regional sports networks, like the ones Disney will be selling after it purchases them — and more assets — from 21st Century Fox, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
But given the opportunity to predict whether Viacom might merge with CBS, Bakish, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the former, said he'd "abstain" from commenting.
The Viacom CEO, speaking in Las Vegas a the Citi TMT West Conference, which coincides with the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the same city, said he's more focused on smaller acquisitions, using recently purchased VidCon and Awesomeness as examples. The latter was purchased for less than $100 million whereas three years ago the digital production house was valued at $650 million.
Bakish said that the Disney-Fox deal, coupled with decisions by Disney and WarnerMedia, now owned by AT&T, to launch their own streaming services this year presents opportunity for Viacom because it means less content is available to sell.
"A simultaneous reduction in supply from trusted suppliers combined with a resurgence of Viacom is the perfect setup for our company," he said.
He also told the Wall Street analysts in attendance not to expect blackouts of Viacom channels as carriage deals are renewed because of the template used at the end of 2017 when Viacom renewed with Charter Communications in a deal that included lots of extras, like co-producing content, collaborating on advanced advertising and more on-demand content.
"We've renewed or extended over half of our sub base and we have gone dark nowhere," he said. "As we look to the next renewal ... we're doing it from a place where we have a strategy that we know works, we know adds value, and is not all about having some Mexican standoff to see who blinks first."
He congratulated Paramount for a successful turnaround, using the latest in the Transformers franchise as an example: Bumblebee he said, is "solidly profitable" while its predecessor in the summer of 2017 lost more than $100 million.
He also praised the film studio's strategy of leveraging Viacom TV brands — Nickelodeon, MTV and BET — the upcoming example being What Men Want, a reimagining of What Women Want, the 2000 film starring Mel Gibson. The new version, produced by BET Films and Paramount Players and distributed by Paramount Pictures, is due Feb. 8 and stars Taraji P. Henson. The movie has "tested through the roof," he said.
This being CES, Bakish also weighed in on some of the technology he has seen at the show.
He said there's "a clear onslaught of incremental broadband" coming and all of entertainment can profit from that.
He also noted the plethora of "autonomous vehicles" and said that they are "unlocking the last bastion of video-free time." It will lead to more video in the backseat of cars and, eventually, in the front seat as cars become driverless, he said. "That's really exciting."

Nickelodeon, BBC, Cartoon Network Gaze Into the Future of TV at MipJunior 2018 [Updated] | MIPCOM
A power panel at MipJunior 2018 on Saturday afternoon saw executives peering into TV’s future and talking about multiple changes in the recent past
CANNES — “Never predict, especially about the future,” the saying goes. Three of MipJunior 2018’s key speakers and kids industry players – from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the BBC – took that to heart on Cannes’ Saturday afternoon when addressing the panel subject, “View from the Top: Gazing into the Future of Kids Media.” Rather than addressing where the business is headed – if they knew, they’d have ankled their jobs – Nickelodeon’s Jules Borkent, the BBC’s Jackie Edwards and Adina Pitt at Cartoon Network drilled down on the major changes and challenges affecting where the kids media business is today. Here are five insights:
1. THE NEW NAME OF THE GAME: PARTNERING
What has changed in the last couple of years? asked Borkent, Nickelodeon Senior Vice President (SVP), Global Acquisitions and International Programming. “For us, it’s about figuring out [how to meet] the desire for more and more content than we’re currently producing.” Nickelodeon’s solution: Partnerships, whether on wholly-owned or shared content or acquisitions. These have become “far more forefront on how we deliver content,” he commented. One case to point: Nickelodeon Latin America’s has just gone into production on fantasy fiction musical Club 57, its first co-production with Iginio Straffi’s Rainbow Group in Italy. “We’re working with partners that five years ago we wouldn’t necessarily have,” Borkent said.
2. RETOOLING FRANCHISES
“We’re focused on building brands and franchises,” said Pitt, Vice President (VP), Content Acquisitions & Co-Productions, Cartoon Network & Boomerang US. “That’s not just about looking for new franchises and experimenting, but also staying true to brands,” and re-tooling them, she suggested, instancing Total DramaRama. Created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch for Fresh TV and distributed by Cake Ent., the Canadian animated action comedy series, which bowed on Cartoon Network on Sept. 1, places the characters of Total Drama in an alternate universe ageing them down from teens to toddlers. “It’s an important lesson: Sometimes go back, retool or reimagine the IP you have,” Pitt argued. Nickelodeon has also just done this with the network's recently launched Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a brand-new 2D animated series which premiered Sept. 17 that reimagines the iconic characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a fresh new way.
3. LOCALIZATION – A BOON NOT A BANE
Considering China – “a great opportunity for new collaborations,” said Edwards, head of the BBC children’s acquisitions & independent animation – discussion turned to the ever more global industry. “It is a global industry and I think in the future that will be everybody’s challenge,” said Edwards. She went on: “When everything is everywhere and there is so much content, so many platforms, how are you to stand out? Sometimes localization gives you distinctiveness. As a public service broadcaster, I think that’s going to save us.”
4. LIVE ACTION OPENING UP
For many years, the multi-camera preserve of Nickelodeon and Disney, live action is one program option with ever more opportunity, as recent successes, such as Federation Kids & Family’s Find Me in Paris, which airs on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland illustrates. “We’re testing the waters with telenovelas,” said Borkent. “Live action is opening up more, as viewers are opening up to other cultures.”
5. NEWS OF THE LONGTERM DEMISE OF THE TELLY IS SOMEWHAT EXAGERRATED
According to Nickelodeon research, 65% of kids still regard a TV set as the “easiest model” to access content, Borkent said. “Most children are watching content on TV. They love character and story. Television is a showcase for the very best of it,” said Edwards. She added: “What will happen in the future is that channels will still endure for pre-school, while older kids will search for the same content on VOD platforms and YouTube.” That of course is already a growing reality. A Eurodata TV analysis – referred to during its MipJunior overview on Saturday of new trends in kids entertainment – suggests that daily TV viewing by younger and older children in both the U.S. and U.K. has fallen by pretty much one hour in both countries over 2012-17, from over 2 hours 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes for 4-6 year-old kids in the U.K.. The future is now.
Additionally, Viacom's research unit says globally, teens now access content on 13 devices but TV sets remain the preferred screen. Over half say they prefer to watch content on a TV set.

Pam Kaufman Says Licensing 'Best Industry in the World' | BLE 2018
Brand Licensing Europe (BLE) 2018 kicked off with the first official keynote session at The Licensing Academy with Pam Kaufman, President, Viacom/Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP). During the fireside chat with Amanda Cioletti, content director, License Global, Kaufman shared insights into the changing retail landscape and discussed how the newly-formed, globally-aligned Viacom/Nickelodeon Consumer Products positions the organization for success and how consumer products fits into Viacom’s broader strategy. Kaufman said that she was having “the best time ever” in her new role and is positive about the collaboration between Viacom and Nickelodeon. Now that one team is handling the portfolio across the company, she is looking for licensing opportunities within the new and classic library at VNCP and Paramount Pictures for films such as Top Gun, Clueless and more. She is also meeting with teams and assessing markets, with a focus on Asia, Brazil and Mexico.
With a raft of programming for kids and families, Kaufman is looking to Viacom’s properties like South Park and Jersey Shore to expand licensing opportunities. Soul Train, a VNCP property, is approaching its 50th anniversary, and Kaufman is seeking partners to work with for the classic dance show. Paw Patrol, another VNCP property, has become a favorite show with kids and adults alike, which caught Kaufman by surprise.
“Every time I go somewhere, watch something or read a Kardashian post [on social media], there’s always something about Paw Patrol,” says Kaufman. Plans for Paw Patrol include a direct-to-video program for “Mighty Pups” at Walmart in the U.S. When speaking about the classic property Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which received an image overhaul for the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series on Nickelodeon, Kaufman found that keeping a 30-year-old property like TMNT relevant was a relatively easy challenge. “It really is in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' DNA to change it up,” says Kaufman.
One of the new strategies was to premiere Rise of the Turtles across all digital channels, including YouTube. The premiere show received 8.5M global views. Kaufman also shared how working with an influencer like JoJo Siwa helped VNCP get into an overlooked market.
“We saw a retail opportunity for 9-to 14-year-olds,” says Kaufman. “It was an opportunity for the company to go to retail and amplify a space that is underserved.” Next year, Siwa is celebrating her 16th birthday by releasing new music, and recently debuted a new animated series, The JoJo BowBow Show Show featuring her dog BowBow, who is breaking out as a pet influencer. Kaufman showed nothing but enthusiasm for the future of the licensing industry.
“We’re in the best industry right now in the world,” says Kaufman. “The retail landscape changes, but people are never going to stop shopping. We’re looking for a lot of ways to connect to the consumer. And there’s more content being consumed than ever before."
Viacom/Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) is exhibiting at Brand Licensing Europe in London at stand D10. The VNCP booth also includes a Slime Zone booth, in which attendees can get slimed in person or virtually. Check out a selection of photos and videos from BLE 2018 below! #ALLFORFANS:

We also have our keynote on the IOC’s new licensing strategy,” says Knight. “I would strongly advise visitors to arrive early–these sessions are going to be popular and busy.”
“Our session will show how we are bringing a 130-year-old brand with a rich scientific history to life through consumer products, with a key focus on driving sustainable, biodegradable materials and products which help protect the future of the planet,” says Helena Mansell-Stopher, director, U.K. licensing, National Geographic.

We’ll share what we’ve learned about how to create a new visual style and storylines that work for artistic and merchandise purposes while staying true to the originals loved by millions of dedicated fans all around the world.”

Viacom’s CFO Says They Hope To Be On OTT Services Like Hulu & YouTube TV 'Eventually'
Just over a year ago, Viacom pulled their programming from over-the-top subscription services PlayStation Vue and Hulu. According to Viacom at the time they wanted to focus on cable TV service instead of streaming services. Now it looks like Viacom may be having second thoughts.
Speaking at the Gabelli Annual Movie and Entertainment Conference earlier this week, Viacom CFO Wade Davis acknowledged that he is well aware that Viacom channels like Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV and don’t show up on Hulu with Live TV or YouTube TV, but thinks they will be added eventually.
Davis pointed out that Viacom is present in the virtual multichannel video programming distributor (MVPD) world and got in a slight dig at the vMVPDs that don’t carry Viacom.
“We’re extremely well-represented in the traditional distributor lead virtual MVPDs, that’s Sling TV and DirecTV Now. And those are really the virtual MVPDs that matter,” Davis said. “We’d love to be on [Hulu and YouTube TV], we’re in discussions with those guys all the time and we’re optimistic that we’re going to … make progress with some of the virtual MVPDs that we’re not on.”
But he said that the real growth from a vMVPD standpoint is going to continue to be driven from the traditional distributors. The two most significant parts of the vMVPD business are content cost and subscriber acquisition, and those are areas where the traditional distributors have incredible advantages versus new entrants in the space, he said, while anticipating further growth from other traditional distributors entering the vMVPD market.
While this is good news for many, it is important to mention that Davis did not mention PlayStation Vue.
In terms of traditional distributors launching vMVPDs, Dish Network and DirecTV are really the only ones so far; though it’s worth noting that Comcast is a part-owner of Hulu. Verizon has said that it is no longer interested in launching a streaming TV service, and the U.S. cable operators that offer streaming TV services typically do so only within their footprints.
As of April 2018, DirecTV Now had about 1.5 million subscribers, and in February 2018 Dish revealed that Sling TV has 2.2 million subscribers. YouTube TV has yet to divulge any subscriber numbers, but Hulu said late last month it now has 800,000 subscribers (out of 20 million total) opting for its live TV service.
So what is holding Viacom back from expanding its OTT footprint right now? There is likely to be quite a couple issues holding Viacom back. Firstly, Viacom is pushing for a re-merger with CBS. It is possible they want to finish the merger before they agree to any new deals. Viacom is also likely hoping to hold out for a better deal to get more money from YouTube TV and Hulu.
The news follows Viacom revealing earlier this year that it hopes to launch its own streaming service during Fall 2018.

Viacom CEO Says Stock Price Is His Biggest Frustration During MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit
Viacom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bob Bakish touted the media company's turnaround efforts at an investor conference on Tuesday, May 15 - but expressed frustration with its stock price and acknowledged the company would need to strengthen the ratings performance of Nickelodeon and its recently launched Paramount Network.
MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson opened the chat with Bakish, at the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit in New York, by saying that Viacom and Bakish couldn't comment on Monday's lawsuit from CBS Corp. against Viacom' and CBS' controlling shareholder National Amusements, which is owned by the Redstone family, to block a merger of the two companies and reduce NA's voting power. Nathanson highlighted that this was really a CBS and NA issue.
Speaking at the conference in a session that was webcast, Bakish started off by saying. "I fundamentally believe we made a lot of progress at Viacom in the last year or so," including by bringing in new executives at the networks unit and having "a complete management overhaul" at the Paramount studio that he said would set up the studio to grow and be profitable in 2019.
But Bakish also reiterated that the turnaround of Viacom's business will continue to be a process. "It's not a light switch," he said.
His biggest disappointment so far? The company's stock price, the Viacom CEO said. "Fundamentally, we are not yet seeing a financial appreciation of what we have done." He emphasized that "we are 1,000 percent focused, me and our senior management team, on pushing the company forward."
The value of Viacom, which has seen improving financials and operating momentum over the past year-plus under Bakish's leadership, was understood to have been one key focus in recent talks between the independent board committees of Viacom and CBS about a possible recombination. The other issue was understood to be the future role of Bakish.
CBS said in its Monday lawsuit that it was seeking to prevent the Redstones from ousting any board members or changing the company’s bylaws before a Thursday board meeting that will formally consider the possible Viacom deal, and also a dividend that would reduce National Amusements’ voting stake from 79 percent to 17 percent. CBS said a special committee of its board had over the weekend reached the "unanimous decision" that the proposed Viacom transaction was "not in the best interests of CBS stockholders."
While Bakish didn't get asked about or address his take on a possible recombination with CBS, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) was a topic of debate during his appearance. "It will either maybe restart the race on vertical integration" or force companies to pivot in different directions, he said about the upcoming court decision on AT&T's planned acquisition of Time Warner. And he said that while nobody expected Rupert Murdoch to sell parts of 21st Century Fox, the company's deal with Walt Disney wasn't something he sees as a factor that would fundamentally "influence the future" of the industry and its direction.
Discussing Viacom's TV networks business, the CEO said its current position in terms of distribution was "night and day" compared to when he took over as permanent CEO in December 2016. In terms of ratings trends, MTV and other key networks have gotten stronger, while others are not where they need to be yet.
"We do have some ratings issues with our Paramount Network," which launched in January as a rebrand of the former Spike, he admitted, mentioning some scheduling changes this week and upcoming originals after the first original series Waco, which he said "performed very well." He mentioned "two pieces of signature original programming in the very near future," namely American Woman, starring Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari and Jennifer Bartels, and Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone with Kevin Costner. He called both "pretty spectacular." Overall, the network "needs a little more time to bed down," he said.
Bakish also mentioned Nickelodeon as having ratings challenges. "It's part working on the linear television side and also partially expanding our share of non-linear television," he said.
Asked about why he was confident that the Paramount studio would return to growth and profitability in 2019, Bakish cited the new management talent brought in by studio head Jim Gianopulos, his team's well-planned slate and growth in the unit's TV production business. "The damage was really self inflicted," he said about the challenges of the studio when he took over. "The results were disastrous" on the slate side because of bad planning. Bakish also predicted that the back half of the current fiscal year would be profitable for Paramount.

Viacom CEO Bob Bakish Doesn’t Weigh In On CBS-Shari Redstone Drama, Touts Comeback Strategy Instead
Viacom CEO Bob Bakish spent an hour discussing the company’s comeback-kid story without weighing in on the elephant in the room: the big, public brawl between CBS and Shari Redstone.
CBS is seeking a temporary restraining order against Redstone and her family’s holding company, National Amusements, which owns controlling interest in CBS and Viacom. The network went to court Monday to prevent Redstone from interfering with the company’s board before it can consider a measure that would effectively lessen her control.
Veteran media analyst Michael Nathanson said, at the outset of his interview this morning with Bakish during the MoffettNathanson Media & Communications Summit, that the Viacom executive wouldn’t be able to discuss the legal battle between its corporate sibling and Redstone, who has been a proponent of merging CBS and Viacom.
Bakish fell back on a greatest-hits medley of gains at Viacom since he took the reins of the troubled media company in 2016. He talked about his emphasis on strengthening the company’s flagship brands — MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Paramount — by installing new management and investing more heavily in content.
There are early wins: MTV, under Chris McCarthy, is returning to the network’s roots in unscripted series (like Jersey Shore Family Vacation) and has seen 10 months of ratings gains, Bakish said. BET is up double-digits in the ratings, and Comedy Central is seeing progress as well.
Paramount Network, a rebranding of cable network Spike TV, is still a work in progress, Bakish said. The scripted series Waco has been “well received,” he said, and two more pieces of signature programming are on the way: American Woman starring Alicia Silverstone and Yellowstone with Kevin Costner.
Paramount Pictures is the current star of Viacom’s turnaround story, with studio chief Jim Gianopulos leading a new management team to a major theatrical success with A Quiet Place, a $20 million horror-thriller that has brought in $270 million in worldwide box office. Bakish was upbeat about the prospects of forthcoming films Book Club, starring Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
“We have a killer management team and are seeing first-half profitability as a result of greater discipline, and you see the product that’s coming,” Bakish said. “I feel very confident in Paramount.”
Television has become a key driver of Paramount’s revenue, with a contribution for this fiscal year slated to be around $400 million, from zero just a few short years ago (CBS took television production when it split with Viacom in 2006). It already has logged hits with Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why and TNT’s The Alienist, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan premieres on Amazon in August.
Bakish talked in detail about Viacom’s international business (which he headed for a decade) and the various initiatives to capitalize on next-generation platforms, from mobile devices to streaming services to social media offerings.
The newly constituted Viacom Digital Studios, led by AwesomenessTV’s Kelly Day, held its first NewFront presentation this year where it highlighted its work producing 600 hours of original programming for Viacom’s brands (like Cooking in the Crib with Snooki).
Bakish acknowledged that Viacom has yet to crack fast-growing over-the-top subscription services like Hulu, but he said its networks are available two major players, Sling and DirecTV Now, and has negotiated deals with established pay TV providers to be part of future over-the-top offerings.
The executive also threw in a plug for inexpensive streaming services like Philo that are stripped of pricey sports programming.
“I continue to believe there’s a real opportunity there,” Bakish said.
The biggest disappointment so far: The company’s stock price, which opened down about 2% this morning at $28.32.
“We are not yet seeing a financial appreciation of what we have done,” Bakish said.
