2019 Animation Masters Summit Honours Anu Sikka, Head of Content, Kids Entertainment Cluster, Nickelodeon India and Viacom 18

Toonz Media Group, celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, opens the 2019 edition of its weekend Animation Masters Summit (AMS) at the TechnoPark Campus in Trivandrum, Kerala in Southern India, with special guests Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford, British Deputy High Commissioner, Chennai, India. This year’s edition honors two new Masters for their contribution to the world of animation: Anu Sikka, Head of Content, Kids Entertainment Cluster, Nickelodeon India and Viacom 18, and Professor Raman Lal Mistry, Animation Guru and celebrated film designer.

Established as the first ever animation event in India in 1999, the AMS celebrates the “Art of Animation” by bringing together experts and leading figures from the global animation industry to interact with aspiring artists and creative talents, and for masters to showcase their work to animation professionals, entrepreneurs and the media, sharing their knowledge, experiences, insights and inspirations. The theme at this year’s AMS is Connecting Content: Seeing the Big Picture.

In his opening speech Friday in front of 450 industry professionals, Toonz Media Group CEO P. Jayakumar declared, “The Animation Masters Summit is an integral part of Toonz’s legacy and commitment to celebrate the art of animation,” adding, “the importance of working to build engaging experiences to connect with kids.”

Anu Sikka, Head of Content, Kids Entertainment Cluster, Nickelodeon India and Viacom18, received the Jury Award for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Animation. Sikka has made a very large impact on all areas of kids’ entertainment, with her untiring passion and professionalism both for the Indian animation industry as well as Indian children across the continent. She laid the foundations for localizing content, creating a wave of interest that sparked both creativity and content creation, greenlighting evergreen content such as Pakdam Pakdai, also known as Rat-A-Tat and produced by Toonz, which is still being produced and broadcast both in India and around the world.

Receiving the Legend of Animation Award, Professor Raman Lal Mistry, Animation Guru and film designer who is credited for creating the logo of the first ever Indian animation channel, Doordarshan, is a legend in the Indian animation industry. With his unique style of drawing, he has inspired artists and talents across India over the decades and has set himself as a pioneer of animation education in India, helping nurture the talent of future generations in industry.

Master sessions over the two days of the AMS include:

  • Anu Sikka, Head of Content, Kids Entertainment Cluster, Nickelodeon India and Viacom18, on localizing content to engage and connect with your local audience.
  • Christian Schneider, CEO of Gummybear International Inc, and the creator of the YouTube global success song “I’m a Gummy Bear” is talking on the importance of the idea and getting it off the ground.
  • Debbie Sterling, Founder and CEO of the successful interactive kids’ games company Goldieblox, on reinventing girlhood and creating a 360-degree view.
  • Uttam Pal Singh, head of leading kids’ channel Discovery Kids India, on connecting the creator and the audience and getting to know kids and keeping them engaged.
  • Peter Dodd, writer, animation artist and director who has worked on Watership Down, Frankenweenie, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, who will discuss what it takes to build a concept into a viable project.
  • Mayur Puri, screenwriter, lyricist, actor and filmmaker — and the trusted ally of Pixar, Disney and Marvel in localizing content for India — on how to localize content without losing the flavor, and how to strike the right chord.
  • Vivek Ram, modelling and visual effects expert who has worked on global hits such as The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, The Incredible Hulk and Alvin and the Chipmunks, on retelling Indian mythology in a contemporary manner.
  • Srinivas Mohan, visual effects supervisor with 25 years’ experience in the film industry, on the role VFX plays in the storytelling and narrative process.
Coinciding with the AMS, Toonz launched the Cocoon Concept Lab, a program to support authentic storytelling and ideas by providing individualized concept development for emerging concept creators and writers with a TV/Digital series idea or screenplay. The winning project out of 74 entries from around the world will be announced at Animation Masters Summit this weekend and will be taken to the international market to develop further under the Toonz banner.

Jet Airways Flight Of Fantasy Celebrates 20 Glorious Years Of Giving Wings To Children's Dreams | Nickelodeon India

Jet Airways Flight of Fantasy celebrates 20 glorious years of giving wings to children's dreams

Indian airline Jet Airways celebrated its annual and much-awaited Flight of Fantasy initiative on Saturday 11th November 2017 by delighting over 100 young fans - including underprivileged children and those with special needs, by giving them the opportunity to experience the world of aviation, in its effort to spreads joy and smiles all around!

The event marked the 20th Anniversary of this unique initiative and of the airline's philosophy, that espouses active support and contribution towards the society in which it operates, together with a healthy respect for human life and potential.

Jet Airways’ Flight of Fantasy was conceived two decades ago as part of the airline’s endeavour to nurture the dreams of children - especially those belonging to the marginalized sections of society, by opening up the world of aviation to them. Over the years, the appeal and scope of the programme has expanded to include kids with special needs, reflecting the emphasis the airline places on human capability and the power of dreams. In the twenty years of its existence, the initiative has given countless underprivileged children and those with special needs, their first taste of flight and memories they can cherish for life.

This year, the airline invited young guests from four non-governmental organizations (NGO), namely Save The Children India, Sahayini, Center for Social Action and CanKids for the initiative.

Of the four, while CanKids is a 400-member strong, grass-root level NGO dedicated to bringing about a positive transformation among Childhood Cancer nationwide, Sahayini provides development programmes and welfare services to poor and needy children, adolescent girls, women on issues concerning empowerment, child rights and education, special care, protection and services to girls at risk, livelihood promotions, health and environment development through its community centres. Centre for Social Action is a NGO providing professional expertise impacting the lives of vulnerable people, particularly women and children in Mumbai and its suburbs. Last but not the least, Save the Children is India’s leading independent NGO and child rights organisation with presence in 18 Indian states and having successfully transformed lives of more than 6.6 million children.

Given its objective, Flight of Fantasy has drawn active and encouraging support from several leading organisations to partner and contribute in their respective spheres, in an effort to enhance the fun and enjoyment quotient in the lives of the children on the day. This year’s Flight of Fantasy has been supported by GVK, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Viacom 18's Nickelodeon, and Travel Food Services – who sponsored the on-ground food.

Joining the kids at the event, Vinay Dube, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jet Airways, said, "I am delighted to be here with the kids to celebrate this important milestone of our annual event - Flight of Fantasy. Children are our future and Jet Airways takes immense pride in being able to contribute and shape their dreams of flying via this unique initiative that gives kids the opportunity to experience the joy of flying for the very first time. Together with our partner NGOs - Save The Children India, Sahayini, Center for Social Action and CanKids, it gives us great pleasure to be able to brighten the lives of these children in our own small way. I also thank our partners GVK, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Viacom 18, Travel Food Services (TFS) and SkyGourmet for their valuable support."

The event proceedings kicked-off with an entertaining programme of music, dance and games at a special party held for the children at Mumbai airport’s Terminal 2. The party zone was decorated with balloons and streamers in the airline colours. Popular characters from Nickelodeon’s stable brought much cheer to the celebrations when their most popular toons, Motu & Patlu, interacted with the young wards.

Nina Jaipuria, Business Head at Viacom18 Kids Cluster said, "Kids are at the center of Nickelodeon’s universe and our entire world revolves around making them happy and celebrating their zest and enthusiasm. We are happy to partner with Jet Airways in creating a priceless experience that ensures that kids have the time of their life."

The 45-minute long 9W 9875 'Flight of Fantasy' flight, operated by a Jet Airways' Boeing 737–800 aircraft took off from the Domestic Departure Terminal (T2) of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai at 1450hrs.

Once airborne, the children were treated to scenic vistas along India's picturesque Western coastline. Onboard, they took part in fun and engaging activities, with the flight's cabin crew joining in the celebration, before returning to the Mumbai airport an hour later.

Airport operator GVK made their airport lounge available for the pre-flight entertainment. Refreshments were provided by TFS - Travel Food Services, our sponsors for refreshments at the lounge. Indian Oil Corporation provided fuel for the flight while Mumbai International Airport Limited waived off the landing and navigation charges.

Rajeev Jain, CEO, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said, "As a new India unfurls, a generation of young minds will emerge to be the heroes of this great nation. Safeguarding their interests and providing them with a window of opportunities is a responsibility we all should willfully fulfill as conscientious individuals. We are delighted to be a part of this noble initiative and take pride in facilitating a platform that gives underprivileged children a glimpse into the world of aviation. This association is a reiteration of our unwavering commitment towards societal development. We will continue to extend our whole-hearted support towards such initiatives in future".

On their return, the airline's junior guests were given hampers courtesy Viacom 18, capping a memorable day for the children.

Nickelodeon India Announces 2016-2017 Highlights

MUMBAI: Nina Elavia Jaipuria, EVP & Business Head, Kids Cluster, Viacom18, is elated that Nickelodeon India has held on its numero uno position for the third year in a row under two different audience measurement systems, TAM and BARC!

Nina Jaipuria, head of kids cluster, Viacom18

Jaipuria is also satisfied with the growth of Sonic, which has been given booster shots in the form of getting to air Nick's popular franchises like Shiva, Oggy & the Cockroaches and Pakdam Pakdai.

“Nick’s market share is 22% and the next channel is 17%. Hence, there is a large gap between us and our nearest competitor. Sonic’s share has jumped to 7% on average from 3–4% due to Shiva. Together, Nick and Sonic have almost 30% share,” Jaipuria told TelevisionPost.com.

The total ad market for the kids genre is Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) and is growing at 10–11%. Of this, Nick and Sonic take away more than 30% of the ad revenue, avers Jaipuria.

Shiva

“Nick has seen 25–30% growth in its ad rate. Since we are a 100% utilised channel, all growth has to come from effective rates (ER). Sonic’s ad rates have grown by 50%,” she stated.

Jaipuria attributes the success of Nick and Sonic to the creation of a portfolio of characters rather than depending on one character. “We have Shiva, Ninja, Oggy, Pakdam Pakdai, and Motu Patlu. Each of them has worked in a peculiar way for us,” she said.

Kids Choice Awards is back and bigger than ever

After TV, digital and licensing & merchandising (L&M), Viacom18’s kids franchise Nick is all set to engage its core target audience with the second edition of Kids Choice Awards (KCA) 2016. The awards property, which had made its debut in 2014, will be bigger in its second edition.

The property opens up a new revenue stream for Nick, which currently gets 90% of its revenue from ad sales and subscription with L&M making up the remaining 10%.

“This property provides a new touch point to a lot of sponsors who are looking beyond 30-second spot engagement. This is a novel way of breaking the clutter. It’s a win-win situation for all as kids get a customised property, advertisers get an advertising touch point, and broadcasters get a property to engage their core audience,” explains Jaipuria.

For Jaipuria, the time is ripe to bring back KCA at a bigger scale. She feels that kids are under-served as far as live event properties are concerned. Unlike other film awards properties, which are oriented towards adults, KCA has been tailormade for kids.

In Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards India, kids could vote for best actor, actress, film and kids character. There are 13 such categories for which kids have voted. The voting ended on Monday 28th November 2016.

The event will take place on Monday 5th December 2016 at Reliance Studios (Film City), Mumbai. It will have 500 guests, primarily kids, on invite-only basis drawn from NGOs and schools.

In this edition, the property will have a wider reach through airing on multiple Viacom18 channels. The event will premiere on TV during Christmas vacation on Viacom18’s kids cluster Nickelodeon, Sonic, Nick Jr. and Nick HD+. It will then air on other network channels including Colors, Rishtey, Colors Bangla, Colors Marathi, Colors Gujarati besides the over-the-top (OTT) offering Voot.

“We did KCA for the first time in 2014, but that time it was on a smaller scale because the Nick franchise itself was not so robust. Today, the platform is very healthy and robust with multiple characters. We will leverage the equity that we have in the network. Moreover, it is a property that is very family-inclusive; therefore, it makes sense to air it on other network channels,” Jaipuria said.

The property has four main sponsors including Dabur Red Paste as the presenting sponsor, Lifebuoy and Choki Choki as co-powered by sponsors, and Funskool as the associate sponsor.

The property will have all the pomp and show with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Akshat and Raghav Juyal, Mouni Roy and the Dramebaaz kids performing before the audiences. The event will be anchored by the popular duo Manish Paul and Rithvik Dhanjani.

Nick is mounting an extensive marketing plan for the property spanning TV, print, radio and activations. In addition to a high-frequency promo plan across the Nick cluster, the property will be promoted through Dish TV.

Ground activations have been planned in malls across Mumbai and Delhi besides van promotions across 30 cities in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The property will also be promoted on multiple screens in McDonald’s across 150 outlets in the North.

“We are going to burn 3,000 promos from the time the voting started until the tune-in,” Jaipuria said, summing up the marketing plan.

Launch of a brand-new local IP

Nick is gearing up to launch another local intellectual property in partnership with Toonz Animation. The new animation show will debut either in Q4 or Q1 of the next fiscal year.

“We will be launching our new local IP very soon. It makes sense to create more IPs because then we can leverage that IP across platforms like broadcast, digital, and L&M in our network,” Jaipuria said.

Nick, she said, is looking at different angles of revenue streams. One is of course doing an on-ground event, but a bigger opportunity for the brand is L&M.

“Our L&M is growing at 50% CAGR. Brands have partnered us to launch co-branded products across segments like apparel, accessory, footwear, home and back to school,” she added.

Talking of on-ground events, school contact programmes have emerged as another avenue for Nick to engage with kids and advertisers. Another growing revenue stream is the digital product Voot Kids.

As part of its strategy to leverage a character across multiple touch points, the network will launch pre-school Peppa Pig on Nick Jr. and Voot Kids. The character will also be extended to consumer products.

Besides launching a new local animation property, Nick, which commissions 150 episodes every year, is launching fresh episodes of Shiva, Motu Patlu, Pakdam Pakdai and Ninja Hattori.

Jaipuria believes in churning out a new IP every year as this helps in keeping the freshness alive on the channel. It also helps in beating the fatigue for existing shows.
