SpongeBob SquarePants’ Patrick Star always wanted to be… a star! In his new Nickelodeon spinoff series, The Patrick Star Show, everyone’s favorite little pink starfish finally gets his wish.
During this year’s Comic-Con@Home, the cast of the show gave us a glimpse of what the new show will be like with a table read. Actors Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Tom Wilson (Cecil Star), Cree Summer (Bunny Star), Jill Talley (Squidina Star), and Dana Snyder (GrandPat) regaled fans with an enactment of an episode and then took questions along with co-executive producers Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli. SYFY WIRE’s Tara Bennett moderated the panel.

Before getting into the table read of the recently premiered episode, “Stair Wars,” the cast and executive producers shared their take on what makes The Patrick Star Show different. “It’s a variety show folded into a sitcom,” Ceccarelli explained. “We could basically just go anywhere we wanted to go with our creativity. We could do genre parodies, we could do all kinds of different segments that would be a little more disconnected and fragmented and fractured, kind of like Patrick's brain probably is.”
The panel then treated us to a table read that emphasized what Faberbakke called The Patrick Star Show’s “non sequitur element.” In “Stair Wars,” Patrick and his GrandPat have a standoff on the stairwell and jump through sequences in the horror genre as well as a cable newscast, among others. The read took advantage of the online format, and had rough sketches of what the eventual animation would look like on most of the screen. The voice actors were at the bottom, allowing us to see their facial expressions while they read the script.
Having the show framed around Patrick, who Faberbakke described as “gooey gelatinous mess of impulses,” is what makes the spinoff different from SpongeBob yet still clearly part of that ecosystem.
“I think the biggest difference is the randomness of the humor,” Ceccarelli said near the end of the panel. “The fact that it’s Patrick's brain that was the baseline, where everything's coming from. It created a world of a bit more creative chaos, because things are bouncing around a bit more inside that empty skull of his. The different visual styles, the different story styles…they all come from that even more surreal place. But that still is similar to the SpongeBob universe because we've always dealt with that kind of surreal sensibility and humor, it's just now we've dialed it up like to 10.”

The COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak hasn't been easy on anyone, and there's one fictional character who'd especially struggle with the isolation of lockdown. Perpetually upbeat SpongeBob SquarePants would be crushed by having to put his social life on hold, Tom Kenny, who voices SpongeBob, told Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, reporting for CNET.
Of all the residents of Bikini Bottom, lockdown is "probably hardest on SpongeBob because he's such a social creature," the Emmy Award-winning actor told Cooper over the phone. SpongeBob "loves going out to work at the Krusty Krab, and he loves being out in the town, and he loves hanging out with his friends, and he loves doing stuff."
SpongeBob's friends might adapt better to quarantine than the sponge himself.

"Squidward is a social distancer just by his personality," Kenny said of SpongeBob's morose co-worker. "Patrick lives under a rock. Sandy is the only mammal for 20,000 leagues around, so she's used to kinda being a lone wolf -- or a lone squirrel. And Mr. Krabs would rather just hang out with his cash register and count his money in the back room than do anything else, so yeah, I think that they're probably doing better than SpongeBob."
Kenny has voiced SpongeBob since the Nickelodeon animated show's 1999 premiere, and he'll voice SpongeBob in a new program, The Stars of SpongeBob Fan Favorites Special, airing Friday, May 5, 2020 on Nickelodeon.
YouTube personality David Dobrik hosts the half-hour show, which features animation from original SpongeBob SquarePants episodes, with the regular voice cast redoing the same lines they delivered years ago. Fans were allowed to vote on a small selection of scenes at NickPlay.com, with the top vote-getters being used in the special.
Kenny said the re-created scenes felt fresh to the voice actors, even though they've done them before. "Some of (the scenes) are 20 years old, so those mental files were dumped long ago by the cast," he said. "So that just kinda adds to the fun."
The actor hopes the fan-favorites special provides some laughs in these strange times. The cast recorded from their homes, as opposed to joining together in one studio as they usually do.

"Cartoons are this kinda comfort-food product," Kenny said, in a friendly, professional voice you'd never connect to SpongeBob's bubbly, perky tones. (He sounds a bit like Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle star Bryan Cranston, actually.) "You can make it in a different way but the end product still looks and tastes and smells the same way it ever did. It's like a Krabby Patty."
Kenny himself is staying busy in his "pineapple under the sea in Studio City (California)," he said. In addition to recording for Rick and Morty -- he's voiced everyone from the ever-helpful Mr. Meeseeks and the cat-like Squanchy to the uber-creepy King Jellybean -- and other projects, he's working on regular SpongeBob SquarePants season 13 episodes as well as the show's upcoming new Nickelodeon spinoff, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. (Neither the new SpongeBob season nor Kamp Koral have premiere dates yet.)

In the new show, a 10-year-old SpongeBob and young versions of his current pals enjoy crazy adventures at sleepaway camp.
"All the regulars are there, and you get to see them in their nascent days," said Kenny, demonstrating how he squeaks his versatile voice into an even higher register to voice "little-kid SpongeBob."
The spinoff show will be set up in the upcoming third film for SpongeBob and crew -- The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which includes flashbacks to the friends' Kamp Koral days. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on Aug. 7, having been postponed twice now by the coronavirus outbreak.
While the outbreak hasn't found its way into SpongeBob's fictional world, the character himself, long a favorite topic of meme-makers, is again showing up in plenty of memes about the virus.
In one, a nervous SpongeBob SquarePants hyperventilates underneath the caption, "Somebody said reopening the economy right now is like believing your ex changed after two months."
In another, SpongeBob appears to be getting up to leave his house, (he's actually sitting down), and the wording reads, "People with the coronavirus when they get infected and go to get other countries infected."
Cooper talked to Kenny before global protests erupted following the tragic death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis. But SpongeBob has turned up in those related memes as well, including one showing a sick SpongeBob after presumably contracting the virus at a protest, and one offering a jab at those who replaced their social media image with a black square, but did nothing else.
Kenny says he hasn't seen any of the coronavirus-specific SpongeBob memes -- and Cooper and Kenny spoke before the protest-related memes really took off -- but he understands why the character he voices has become such a universal backdrop, praising the expressiveness of the artwork and the artists' talents.
"Cartoons just translate globally to all cultures better than most pop culture," Kenny said. "I think that's why he's been so adopted by the meme culture."

TOM KENNY TALKS SPONGEBOB TABLE READ SPECIAL AND SINGING THE 'INDOORS SONG'

On Friday, June 5, Nickelodeon is holding a virtual table read of some iconic SpongeBob SquarePants scenes performed by the show's core voice cast: Tom Kenny (SpongeBob/Gary), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton).
"We haven’t seen each other since this whole thing started," Kenny tells SYFY WIRE, referring to the coronavirus pandemic and how it's made in-person animation recordings impossible. "We’re used to recording together in the same room, pretty much every Wednesday for 20 years plus. I’m the voice director, I direct those guys and we miss it... We're really excited to get back together and be those characters again in an ensemble, not in a vacuum by yourself like this."
Hosted by YouTube personality David Dobrick, the half-hour special is dictated entirely by fans who have already cast their votes on eight absorbent, yellow, and porous moments they want to see recreated. We won't know what sequences were chosen until the event premieres (like Mr. Krabs and the Krabby Patty formula, Nick's keeping details pretty close to the vest) but the candidates can be viewed below.

"There are some [scenes] that always pop up and some of the ones that people are fond of are kind of the more obscure ones," Kenny says. "Who knows what the voting’s gonna bring, but it’ll be fun. It’s always fun to revisit these episodes because we do them and I direct them and then a whole bunch of other stuff supplants that in your brain. You just gotta move on to other shows, other episodes, other life stuff. You kind of forget about it and meanwhile, there’s people out there that’ve been watching it a 150 times and it’s really part of their DNA, even more than it’s [part of] ours."
After more than two decades of voicing Bikini Bottom's happy-go-lucky fry cook, the prolific voice actor has no shortage of favorite episodes, scenes, and lines of dialogue. The best part is that they're always cropping up at all hours of the day. In short, Mr. SquarePants is never detached from Kenny's life.
"I’ll be reading to kids in a school classroom [or] I’ll see kids fooling around and, of course, you think about, ‘What’s funnier than 24?... 25!’ I’m just constantly reminded of SpongeBob stuff and I think the fans are like that, too," he adds. "These scenes are just part of their memory bank and that’s what the memes are, right? It’s like, ‘Hey, this situation kind of reminds me of this drawing of SpongeBob. This Squidward face goes great with this situation. It encapsulates this situation that I’m feeling right now.’ It really depends on the day and it depends on what I’m seeing but, yeah, there’s a lot of SpongeBob-centric memories in my brain once I’m walking through the world."

And speaking of memes, it's staggering to the see sheer amount of relatable imagery the series has delivered unto the internet. Whether it's "Savage Patrick" or "Mocking SpongeBob," everyone's got their go-to template, including Kenny.
"I used to love ‘Imma head out.’ There’s no place for me to head out to anymore!" he jokes. "Where do I go? The store once a month? I understand that there are corona-specific SpongeBob memes and I must admit that I haven’t really seen those yet, but I love all the SpongeBob memes. They’re hilarious."

While we're on the subject of SquarePants content that applies to our everyday lives, let's talk about "I Had an Accident," the Season 3 episode wherein the lovable sponge shatters his posterior and, terrified of having to use an "iron butt" lest he breaks it again, quarantines himself inside his pineapple home against external danger. To anyone isolating amid the pandemic, it's no longer so far-fetched to think that a person could make friends with a potato chip, penny, and used napkin after nearly three months of no physical contact with the outside world.
"I realized that I’m very much like SpongeBob. I am not a stay-at-home, shelter-in-place person," Kenny admits. "Like SpongeBob, I’m realizing I don’t do well on lockdown. I like my community and I like going out and I like restaurants and I like people and I like hanging out and I like going to live music shows all the time. I love going to see old movies. SpongeBob is probably doing about as good as I would do, which is not well."
He notes that other SpongeBob characters would probably fare a lot better in the current situation.
"Squidward, he’s been social distancing forever. His personality is his social distancing," the actor explains. "Patrick lives under a rock. Sandy, she’s kind of a loner anyway because she’s the only Texan she knows, so she just hangs out in her dome and does science. Mr. Krabs just wants to hang out in the backroom and count his money... Gary’s at home while SpongeBob works all day... [But] me and SpongeBob need to get out of the house, man."
Has he sung the "Indoors Song" yet? You bet. "That's kind of my anthem now," Kenny says after belting out a line of the chorus. "I have a deep, personal relationship with a potato chip."
As the interview winds down, Kenny remembers SpongeBob's beloved creator, Stephen Hillenburg. He tragically died from ALS complications in November of 2018, but his underwater legacy lives on. At last summer's San Diego Comic-Con, Kenny recounted SpongeBob's humble beginnings as a mere sketch in Hillenburg's desk drawer.
"[It] could’ve easily been something that lived in his notebook forever," Kenny says. "And the fact that it was allowed to happen and that Nickelodeon got behind it and that the fans got behind it and that it’s had this trajectory that’s still ongoing, is just this beautiful [thing]. I could never have foreseen it. I couldn’t have foreseen it even enough to wish for it. It’s just such a weird thing, an anomaly and to be a part of that is ridiculous."
Kenny keeps constant "reminders" of the creator throughout his home office such as a custom drawing of SpongeBob that Hillenburg made just for him when the show "first started to take off." He also has a 2002 TV Guide cover — co-illustrated by Hillenburg — that mashes up SpongeBob and Popeye (the spinach-eating sailor was mutually beloved by creator and actor).
"[Stephen] changed my life for sure. He changed my career for sure," Kenny says. "He gave me the keys to that character. He gave me tons of freedom and said, ‘There’s a lot of you in this character, you know what to do. I’m not gonna micromanage the voice or micromanage your performance. You know this guy.’ Not very many creators give you that amount of freedom. Steph was such a secure guy and he gave everybody that freedom... He said, ‘You know the character, I picked you because you can channel the character, so just channel the character. If something feels right, do it.’ He was open to trying anything."

More than two decades later, and the denizens of Bikini Bottom are omnipresent; pretty much everyone up on dry land knows who they are and what they look and sound like. SpongeBob SquarePants is simply — and excuse the maritime pun here — an anchor of our popular culture.
"I feel really grateful to be a part of something like that," Kenny concludes. "I don’t think very many actors get to be a part of something like that. I don’t even really fully appreciate what that means yet or understand it. I won’t know for years and years. It’s a testament, I think, to the power of creativity and ideas that Steph Hillenburg had."

“The Stars of SpongeBob Fan Favorites Special” will feature animation from the original episodes alongside the voice cast’s re-creation of beloved scenes. Fans voted on the moments, like “Band Rehearsal,” “Alaskan Bull Worm” and “I’m Dirty Dan.”
“SpongeBob Squarepants,” which was created by Stephen Hillenburg and launched in Summer 1999, has been the No. 1 kids’ animated series on television for the past 17 years. The cartoon is produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif. Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller are co-executive producers.
“The Stars of SpongeBob Fan Favorites Special” premieres on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon.

Arnold finally gets answers about the whereabouts of his missing parents in the highly anticipated, brand-new Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie, debuting this Friday, Nov. 24, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. Featuring a storyline picking up where the original TV series ended in 2004, Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie follows the kids on the field trip of a lifetime, where Arnold and his friends embark on a quest to achieve his dream of finding his missing parents. Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie will premiere as a simulcast on Nickelodeon, TeenNick and Nicktoons.
Co-written and executive produced by the TV series’ original creator Craig Bartlett, Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie features original voice cast members Francesca Marie Smith (The Prince of Egypt) as Helga and Anndi McAfee (Tom and Jerry: The Movie) as Phoebe, alongside dynamic new voice talent Mason Vale Cotton (Mad Men) as Arnold and Benjamin “Lil’ P-Nut” Flores, Jr. (Game Shakers) as Gerald.
Lane Toran (original voice of Arnold) and Jamil Walker Smith (original voice of Gerald) are also amongst the returning cast members, lending their voices as Che and Paulo, two members of the boat crew in San Lorenzo. Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) stars as resident villain, Lasombra.
NickSplat, TeenNick’s programming block dedicated to Nickelodeon’s legendary library of hits from the ‘90s and 2000s, continues its Hey Arnold! celebration with a nightly marathon of every single Hey Arnold! episode through Friday, Nov. 24, from 11:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. (ET/PT). Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie encores Saturday, Nov. 25, and Friday, Dec. 1, at 12:00 a.m. (ET/PT) on TeenNick.
