Paramount UK to Shutter 'Smithsonian Channel' Linear TV Channel; To Move Programming to Streaming Services

Paramount UK has announced that it is shutting down its free-to-air linear TV Smithsonian Channel on January 5, 2023, with its programming being moved onto Paramount's streaming services, such as Paramount+, My5, and Pluto TV.

The channel, based on its U.S. counterpart, launched in 2019 and is dedicated to factual programming, covering space, history, science, nature and wildlife. The channel is currently free to watch (depending on the TV platform you use), but is expected to be removed from Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media in the coming weeks.

Some of the Smithsonian Channel’s programmes are already available on Paramount+ in the UK, which is a paid streaming service, while some shows are also available on Channel 5’s streaming app – My5, which is owned by the same company, Paramount.

Paramount revealed to Cord Busters that they plan to open a new free version of the Smithsonian Channel on the company's free streaming-only Pluto TV platform, which is available via Pluto.TV, an app on streaming devices, but the new, ad-supported channel will only come sometime in the future.

“From 5th January 2023, the Smithsonian Channel in the UK will move exclusively to Paramount’s popular streaming services, to reflect the way viewers consume our specialist programming and ensure its content is available to the widest possible audience.

“Smithsonian Channel programming will continue to have a strong presence on Paramount+ and My5, and we plan to launch a new branded channel on the leading free streaming service, Pluto TV, in the near future.”

The Smithsonian Channel is based on a US channel by the same name, with some of the content coming from the US, and some of it being produced in the UK.

Some of the programmes featured on the channel (until its closure) are the popular Inside the Factory series from the BBC, which looks behind the curtains of big UK factories, along with shows like How Did They Build That?, WWII Battles in Color, Air Warriors, Ocean Super Predators and more.

According to the latest BARB figures, Smithsonian has an audience share of 0.16% in the UK, although it still ranks ahead of fellow Paramount channels such as MTV (0.08%), Nickelodeon (0.04%) and Comedy Central Extra (0.11%).

The Smithsonian Channel is currently available on:

- Freeview Channel 57 (it moved there from 56 back in January)
- Freesat Channel 175
- Sky Channel 171
- Virgin Media Channel 276

Following its closure, many of the channel’s programmes will live on via Paramount+, the streaming service that launched in the UK back in June, and on My5.

Paramount+ is a global streaming service that also offers content from Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., CBS, Showtime and Paramount Pictures, as well as exclusive, original programmes.

Paramount+ costs £6.99/month or £69.90/year in the UK, with a free 7-day trial available to everyone. Sign up today at ParamountPlus.com.

Since its launch in the UK, Paramount+ has had a dedicated Smithsonian Channel section, where many of the channel’s programmes are available to watch with a subscription.

Paramount has been steadily streamlining its channel portfolio in the last few years, axing channels including VH-1, 5Spike, MTV Base and MTV Classic.

A Profile Of The Canadian Animator And Musician Duo Adam Goddard and Warren Brown, The Makers Of Nick Jr. UK's "Big Block SingSong"

In a special article, below, NiagaraThisWeek.com, a community online newspaper which covers the Niagara region of Southern Ontario, Canada, profiles Toronto, Canada-based Adam Goddard and Warren Brown, also known as Goddard/Brown, purveyors of fine audio/visual works and the talented animator and musician duo from Grimsby, Canada, who make Nick Jr. UK and Ireland's new musical interstitial animated preschool series "Big Block SingSong", which features block-like characters who sing topical, humorous songs in each episode:

Big Block Singsong makes waves

Talented animator/musician team hail from Grimsby

Big Block Singsong makes waves. Colourful blocks of animation tell stories and impart important lessons in Block Block Singsong, a series of animated shorts from Warren Brown and Adam Goddard. The two men grew up in Grimsby, and their work is now being seen internationally. Images courtesy of Goddard/Brown

Sometimes, even a blockhead can give you some really helpful advice. Kids and parents across Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom are figuring this out, thanks to Big Block Singsong. Episodes of the show are barely two minutes long, and feature colourful block-headed characters who sing and dance their way through catchy tunes.
"Breathe out. Breathe in. Take some time, count to ten. Now you're ready to begin, to cool it down," sing the characters in one video, providing sound advice to viewers young and old who are sad or frustrated.

The kid-friendly music, positive message and quirky animation have been a hit on the CBC in Canada, Disney Junior in the US and Nick Jr. in the UK. The professional quality of the production might lead some viewers to assume the animation is the creation of a large studio team. In reality, there are just two men behind the show, and both hail from Grimsby.

Adam Goddard, 40, and Warren Brown, 40, have been working together for over a decade. Goddard composes and performs the music in every episode of Big Block Singsong, while Brown creates the animations. The two men first met early in life, and attended the same high school, but never suspected they'd be creative collaborators later in life. Friendship, and professional partnership, came later, when both men had were out of school and living in Toronto. Brown was working at Cuppa Coffee Animation in Toronto, and found himself in need of a musician.

"I was looking to connect with some musician, and was talking to a mutual friend of Adam and I. That fellow connected us, and we just started to talk about music and animation," said Brown. "That went on as a once in a blue moon thing, until the studio I was working with came up with a show. I was the director of that show, and decided I wanted Adam to do the music for it."

The show, Bruno, was a one-minute animated short with narration and music, focused on the antics of Bruno the monkey. Bruno was a success and ran for 50 episodes in 2004, and was seen internationally through Nickelodeon cable outlets.

"It had a narrator, but it was really Adam's score that told the story. The voice of the monkey was Adam's music," said Brown.

The partnership on Bruno cemented Goddard and Brown's friendship and professional cooperation. They have worked together ever since, typically on kid-friendly productions like Big Block Singsong. Brown believes that the show's humour and aesthetic also appeal to adults, comparing it to "Terry Gilliam crossed with Mr. Dressup."

"When Big Block Singsong came about, we weren't necessarily aiming for a kid show, to see what could be done with full face singing characters bringing the song aspect to the forefront of the story telling," said Brown.

Goddard said the animations are a perfect vehicle for his song writing. He said he strives to include a positive or educational message in every episode.

"If there's a story to be told or a character to be described, it's through a song of some sort," said Goddard. "It's primarily entertainment, but the message is always positive."

Both men credit their upbringing in Niagara as an influence on their current creative output. Their similar background gives them a wealth of shared experiences from which to draw inspiration.

The inspiration comes out of the process, of how we collaborate together. We are on the same page with a lot of things, and that had a lot to do with our upbringing and where we are from. There is a certain culture that exists where we come from," said Goddard.

NickToons UK Unveils Brand New Rebrand!

Nickelodeon UK's animation and action channel, Nicktoons UK and Ireland, has today (Monday 15th April 2013) launched their brand new rebrand!

Spearheaded by NickToons UK's two brand new shows - Nickelodeon's brand new original CGI-animated comedy series (Nicktoon) "Robot and Monster" and the all-new Canadian animated comedy series "Rocket Monkeys" - and channel favourite "SpongeBob SquarePants", Nicktoons UK and Ireland today unveiled its new branding across its on-air channel and digital website, nicktoons.co.uk, as the channel for animated kids comedy.

Implemented to highlight the comedy content on the children's channel, the re-branding also aims to give Nicktoons a key role within the Nickelodeon UK network between Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. preschool channel, which also underwent a refresh at the beginning of the year.

Tina McCann, MD of Nickelodeon UK, said: "With existing shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants and T.U.F.F. Puppy and new additions Robot and Monster and Rocket Monkeys, the strength of the funny animation we have on the channel is phenomenal."

"The primary aim for the refresh is to position the channel as the destination for boys and girls four to nine years old who love to laugh at cartoons.

"It will also allow Nicktoons to act as a bridge for our audience as they mature beyond Nick Jr. but are yet to progress to Nickelodeon."

The brand refresh will be supported with an on and off channel broadcast campaign with the new strap line '100 per cent toons* (may contain nuts).'

Leading Nicktoons properties such as "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Penguins of Madagascar" and "Fairly Odd Parents" will head a series of 30-second promos as part of the campaign. Developed and created by Nickelodeon's in-house creative team, they have been used to showcase Nicktoons' comedy programmes for kids. Digital ads will also run across competitor sites and high frequency gaming sites using the creative platform used by Nickelodeon, produced by Polymath Digital.

Peter Drake, VP creative director, said: "Nicktoons intends to be the funniest kids channel on TV so the new on air package is deliberately unpredictable and innovative."

"We aim to surprise and delight our audience in every break as well as with every show and create a brand which is both locally relevant and universally funny."

NickToons UK's official website, Nicktoons.co.uk will reinforce the unpredictability by featuring a lever marked 'Don't not pull' which will rearrange the site. As well as watch online streaming video clips and play online games, fans are also able to create their own Nicktoons promos on the 'clipdeck'.

Tweeted (posted) by the Nickelodeon UK Press Office on their official Twitter profile page (@NickelodeonUKPR):

Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons unveils new digital and on air branding

Nicktoons, the animation channel from kid’s TV channel Nickelodeon, has revealed new branding across its on air channel and digital site as it aims to positions itself as a destination for kid’s animated comedy.

Supported with an on and off channel broadcast campaign with the strapline ‘100% toons* (may contain nuts),’ a series of 30-second animated promos have also been released. Nickelodeon amps up the laughs for Nicktoons UK refresh

It looks like Nickelodeon is sticking to its recent pledge to deliver more comedic content to its audiences, as seen by a refresh of its animation channel Nicktoons UK.

New branding to highlight funny content will span Nicktoon’s on-air channel and digital site starting today. The strategy is also designed to make Nicktoons a defined bridge between Nickelodeon UK’s live-action content and its Nick Jr. preschool channel, which underwent a refresh of its own at the beginning of the year.

New comedy series Robot & Monster and Rocket Monkeys (pictured) are set to debut alongside the redesign.

The refresh will be supported with both on- and off-channel broadcast campaigns with the tagline ’100% toons* (may contain nuts).’

A series of 30-second animated promos, developed and created by Nickelodeon’s in-house creative team, showcase Nicktoons properties such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Penguins of Madagascar and Fairly Odd Parents. Digital ads will also run across competitor sites and high frequency gaming sites using the same creative platform created by Nickelodeon, produced by Polymath Digital.

Online at nicktoons.co.uk, users will be able to rearrange the site at any time by pulling a lever marked Don’t Not Pull – similar to the reverse-psychology tactics being used in the broadcaster’s recently launched Nick App.

The Official Nickelodeon UK Website Launches Their Brand New Official "Rocket Monkeys" Show Webpage

To celebrate Nickelodeon UK's animation and action channel, Nicktoons UK and Ireland, starting to premiere and show the brand new Canadian animated comedy series "Rocket Monkeys" from Monday 15th April 2013 at 4:30pm, as part of "April on Nicktoons UK 2013", the official Nick UK and Eire website, Nick.co.uk, has unveiled their brand new official "Rocket Monkeys" show website to accompany the brand new animated show, which you can view here at nick.co.uk/shows/rocketmonkeys!
Nickelodeon UK's brand new "Rocket Monkeys" website features online short streaming video clips featuring scenes from the new show, a "Meet The Characters" section featuring character bios and information about each character in "Rocket Monkeys" - Gus, Wally, Yay-OK, Dr. Chimpsky, Inky, and a photograph gallery featuring stills from "Rocket Monkeys".

The exclusive "Rocket Monkeys" short video clips you can currently watch in the clips section on Nick UK's brand new and official "Rocket Monkeys" website are:

Rocket Monkeys - The monkeys find a banana planet.

Rocket Monkeys - The guys find scares "scarelarious".

When faced with the unknown, great explorers can become heroes. There's an entire universe out there just waiting for us to explore! Alien planets, cultures and galaxies full of danger, so we sent our best and brightest to meet them head on. And when those guys aren't available, we send these guys, the Rocket Monkeys!

Inexplicably charged with carrying out all kinds of important missions, brothers Gus (Seán Cullen, Steve Oedekerk) and Wally (Mark Edwards, Hypermonium) cause more intergalactic calamity than they could ever prevent. Luckily, they have plenty of help from YAY-OK (David Berni), their dashing and devoted (if slightly outdated) robot. These monkeys may not have the brainpower of the Rocket Chickens or the guts of the Cosmosloths, but they do have a hunger for adventure. And by "adventure" we mostly mean "bananas". From the icy depths of Brrrr to the horrifying Planet Splishy Splashy, there's nowhere too dangerous or ridiculous for the monkeys to explore... or try not to blow up. Though it's seen better days, the Monkeys’ big orange rust bucket of a ship remains remarkably versatile. It has everything Gus and Wally could ever need, from a lounge to a laboratory to a command center and even a space monkey arm for those hard-to-reach places. Nominally running the show is GASI, the Galactic Animal Space Institute. Always seeking out the next frontier in galactic exploration, GASI boasts several (at times contentious) animal divisions, from Astro Ducks to Rocket Zebras.

Nick's new comedy animation Rocket Monkeys follows the adventures of two monkey astronauts and their robot sidekick. When battling rogue black holes, vengeful aliens, criminal masterminds, and rifts in the evil dimension, the universe turns to its bravest and brightest to save the day. When those guys are busy, however, the universe is stuck with the Rocket Monkeys. "Rocket Monkeys" also features a great cast of hilarious characters:

Dr. Chimpsky (Jamie Watson) - GASI's esteemed Doctor of Exposition— errr…, Astrophysics, Dr. Chimpsky assigns the Monkeys their highly important missions (which sometimes include getting him more ice when his drink gets too warm) and does his best to keep them on track when they invariably get distracted.

Inky - Part adorable pet, part crew member, all kinds of messy. Inky may not be able to speak, but he still manages to express himself with his impressive ink work.

Lord Peel (Mark McKinney) - Villains aren’t born, they're made — and Lord Peel is no exception. A once-average suburban alien who just happens to kind of look like a banana (okay—exactly like a banana), poor Lord Peel was driven insane by Gus and Wally’s never-ending attempts to turn him into a banana split. He's since become a vengeance-obsessed baddie with a very specific goal: make the Rocket Monkeys pay.

Nefarious - Exiled by the Council to Stop Super Villains, Nefarious spends his time dreaming up new ways to escape his lonely asteroid prison and get back to his real business—taking over the universe.

Deep Space Dave - TV action hero Deep Space Dave is better at catch phrases than catching bad guys, but that doesn't stop the Rocket Monkeys from worshiping his every slovenly move.

Monkevil (Kayla Lorette) - Don't let her sweet exterior fool you — bank-robbing cutie pie Monkevil is as slick as they come, easily carrying out heist after intergalactic heist. Too bad Gus and Wally are too in love to notice.

The Space Gorilla - Rival rocket crew to the monkeys and the frat boys of the GASI world, He - and She - rilla are everything Gus and Wally aren’t: cool, competent, brave, and more than a little mean. He-Rilla is voiced by Jamie Watson and She-Rilla is voiced by Shoshana Sperling.

Bernice (Mike "Nug" Nahrgang) - Gus and Wally's doting mother. A fun-loving dynamo, Bernice loves to have a good time with her boys, but isn't afraid to play the stern mother card when they need a little discipline.

Gamester X (Mark Little) - Obsessive and excitable, Gamester X will stop at nothing to complete his rare and extensive collections. He’s a terrifying force — that is, until his mom yells at him to clean his room.

Nickelodeon acquired the pay-television broadcast rights to the brand new animated comedy show "Rocket Monkeys" from the Canadian production company and animation studio Breakthrough Entertainment in February 2013 for the networks US and international channels (Planet Nickelodeon / Planet Orange). "Rocket Monkeys" is a new 26 episode x 26 minute cartoon that is produced by Canada's Breakthrough Entertainment in association with Teletoon Canada and animation studio Atomic Cartoons. "Rocket Monkeys" was created by Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson, and developed by Alex Galatis and Mark Evestaff (also the show's producer). Executive producers include Ira Levy, Joan Lambur and Peter Williamson. Partial funding for Rocket Monkeys was provided by Shaw Rocket Fund. "Rocket Monkeys" premiered on Nick USA in March 2013.

Broadcast Reports Viacom International Media Networks May Be Looking To Launch Nickelodeon UK On Freeview; MTV Denies Any Current Plans

The television industry news website Broadcast is reporting the Nickelodeon UK News that Viacom International Media Networks, which owns and operates the MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central Viacom channels, is exploring the possibility of acquiring a second electronic program guide (EPG) channel slot on the British digital terrestrial television service Freeview, which may see the company launch a Nickelodeon block on DTT, allowing Nick UK's programming to reach a wider audience.

The move is being worked on at a global level and David Lynn, executive vice president and managing director of MTV Networks UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, is understood to be involved.

Broadcast understands that VIMN has approached a number of EPG brokers and agents about acquiring an additional Freeview slot, however, an MTV spokeswoman has denied the project: "Like any broadcaster, we have speculative discussions about our content in multiple markets on a regular basis, but we genuinely have no news regarding any collaborations with partners in the UK at this time. And we have absolutely no plans to buy a Freeview channel or slot."

VIMN already operates free-to-air channel Viva on Freeview, which airs series including the Nicktoon "Spongebob Squarepants" and Comedy Central's "South Park":

The move would see the company launch a Nickelodeon block on DTT, echoing a wider trend in the international kids’ market, with the likes of Disney launching free-to-air networks around the world.

The company already operates free-to-air channel Viva on Freeview, which airs series including Spongebob Squarepants and repeats of South Park and 16 And Pregnant. However, it is believed that the terms of this licence preclude the company from airing more kids’ content via DTT, leading it to look for another slot.

The company’s plans are sensitive as a result of its wide-ranging deal with pay-TV platform BSkyB. Viacom International Media Networks UK and Ireland and BSkyB are joint venture partners in Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, and the News Corp-backed firm’s sales arm has been in charge of advertising sales across VIMN’s bouquet of channels since 2010.

A DTT presence would allow Nickelodeon to reach more eyeballs in the UK and would provide a boon for its consumer-products division, which would be able to strike additional licensing

TBI Vision Selects Platinum Film's Animated Boys' Action Series "Matt Hatter Chronicles" As Their "Show Of The Week"!

The television news website TBI Vision has selected Platinum Film's animated boys' action series "Matt Hatter Chronicles" as their "Show of the Week", and to celebrate, TBI Vision has posted a great article (below) about the animated children's series, which airs on Nickelodeon channels and networks around the world (Planet Nickelodeon), including Nick UK's action channel, NickToons UK and Ireland, which includes an exclusive interview with Nigel Stone, the Chief Executive Officer and creative director at Platinum Film. The following "Matt Hatter Chronicles" news article also announces the news that Platinum Film's hopes to start the shows licensing and merchandising (L&M) effort this year (2013), and that they hope to make a third season (season 3) of "Matt Hatter Chronicles":
[Show of the Week column]

Matt Hatter Chronicles

Matt Hatter Chronicles Opening Titles

UK-based Platinum Films has taken a targeted approach to making kids series; rather than developing a large number of properties in the hope that one sticks, it focuses its energies on a small number and attempts to build a fully-fledged franchise. Having made 65x10mins Dream Street and 104x20mins Planet Cook, it is now focused on Matt Hatter Chronicles.

“We don’t make a huge number of shows and we don’t do work-for-hire,” explains Platinum’s CEO and creative director Nigel Stone. “We don’t have a big development slate; we work strategically to see what broadcasters need.”

The idea with Matt Hatter was, he says, to have a series with a sense of adventure rather than just a shoot ‘em-up action show. It is, the producers say, a story-driven action-comedy.

“There’s not much appointment viewing for kids now and we pride ourselves on each episode of Matt Hatter being almost a mini-movie,” Stone says.

In the UK the show is on CiTV and pay TV channel Nicktoons, where it has proved popular. The animated series, which cost about US$12 million for the first two seasons, follows the adventures of 13 year-old Matt. He discovers that his family defends a gateway to a different dimension called the Multiverse. In a quest to protect the Multiverse, Matt and his friends Roxie and Gomez, have to defeat and movie-inspired villains.

The show is produced by Platinum Films and Toronto’s Dream Mill. It is animated by Arc Productions, the Canadian studio behind Gnomeo & Juliet and Tim Burton's 9. Visually, the show uses a technique dubbed Multivision, a 3D effect that is achieved without the need for glasses. It is unashamedly boy-skewed. Stone says: “Many people fail because they want to be all things to all people. Our show is unashamedly a boys’ action comedy. At its core it is about friendship. It is the Harry Potter model.”

Attempting to encapsulate some of the elements that made Harry Potter such a huge success was always part of the plan. “When we were developing Matt Hatter that franchise was coming to an end and we thought there was a hole in the TV market for something using that model.”

Endemol was handling distribution, but Platinum has taken the rights back and is now running international sales itself. To that end it hired Natalie Llewellyn as head of international programming last year. She joined from Everything's Rosie producer V&S Entertainment and is charged with driving sales of Matt Hatter around the world.

Having already been sold to Canada’s Teletoon, Nickelodeon in Australia and New Zealand, Network Ten Australia, TVNZ New Zealand, RTE in Ireland, SABC in South Africa and JCC in the Middle East Region, the show has just been sold into Iberia. RTVE’s Clan TV and Iberian pay TV channel Canal Panda have both acquired the animated series. The 26x30mins series will debut on Panda’s channels this spring and on Clan later in the year.

Biplano has been signed to manage L&M and promotional rights for the property in Spain and Portugal.

Other licensing deals include an agreement with Topps, Penguin for publishing and Titan for comics. The licensing and merchandising effort will kick in this year. In Latin America, Platinum has signed with Exim for licensing in Latin America and Stone is heading to NATPE to push the kids show into the region.

Meanwhile, Platinum is also in full development with a new season and will talk to commissioning broadcasters about a possible third series early this year.

Kidscreen Reveals How To Pitch A Potential Brand New Show To Tim Patterson, VP Of Scheduling At Nickelodeon UK

As part of the 2013 edition of Kidscreen's Global Pitch Guide, a annual guide by the children's entertainment news website Kidscreen which give tips, advice and information to anyone with an idea for a brand new kids' television show on how to pitch their brand new children's series to children's television networks and channels around the world, Kidscreen talks about what kinds of programming genres and properties Tim Patterson, the Vice President of Scheduling at Nickelodeon UK, looks out for when looking for brand new shows, animated or/and live-action, for Nickelodeon UK's bouquet of channels - Nickelodeon UK and Ireland, Nicktoons, Nick Jr. and Nick Jr. 2 - and gives advice on how you may be able to pitch your potential brand new live-action or/and animated show to Tim Patterson!:
Tim Patterson
VP Of Scheduling
Nickelodeon (UK)

Looking For/ The priority is preschool programming for Nick Jr., as there is an appetite for locally produced preschool programming from UK producers. current examples such as Peppa Pig and Poppy Cat perform very well for Nick UK’s two preschool channels: Nick Jr. and Nick Jr. 2. The Nick Jr. ethos is one of "every day's an adventure," so the channel is on the lookout for programming that demonstrates those attributes. Animation is at the top of the list, as it resonates so strongly with the preschool audience and works well across multiple territories, but Nick Jr. is still open to live-action pitches. Additionally, Patterson wants to hear ideas for Nicktoons and Nickelodeon and hopefully discover the next global hit for those channels. For both networks, humor is the key and producers are encouraged to think beyond the 22-minute episode. Nick UK is also interested in hearing about
short-form projects.

Preferred Approach/ Producers should contact Patterson directly or the programming team (programming@nickelodeon.co.uk). He recommends that pitchers take some time to research Nick UK channels to determine where their program [programme] would fit in the given channel's schedule — what will the idea offer Nick's audience?
A one sheet that outlines the overall concept, as well as a few storylines demonstrating a clearly thought-out story arc are the preferred pitch format. Series narrative and core attributes of characters are more important to Patterson than art at the pitch stage. If an animatic or a pilot is available, send it along, and keep in mind the evocative power of music. Patterson feels that a soundtrack can suggest a great deal about what is at the core of a property.
