Nickelodeon and Paramount Plus Execs Share Their Thoughts on the Definition of 'Whole-Family Viewing'

With an increasing number of platforms vying for whole-family viewing, Kidscreen recently asked a bunch of executives, including Nickelodeon's Paul DeBenedittis (EVP, programming and content strategy) and Paramount+'s Jeff Grossman (EVP) about how they are defining that elusive audience. Below are DeBenedittis and and Grossman's responsive, and you can read more about how platforms are trying to provide content for the whole family on kidscreen.com.

The Astronauts

Exec: Paul DeBenedittis, EVP, Programming and Content Strategy, Nickelodeon

What is your definition of family-friendly: Dual-appealing stories, themes and characters, [such as] nostalgic favorites that have entertained generations of kids and now appeal to parents. We’ve seen in our research over the past few years that parents are looking for appropriate content to watch with their entire family. This trend keeps growing.

Exec: Jeff Grossman, EVP, Paramount+

What is your definition of family-friendly: We have taken the approach where we create a very diverse slate of programming that targets one specific part of the family, either with a sophisticated adult drama or our Nickelodeon library for preschool and kids content.

Platform examples: Star Trek, SpongeBob SquarePants, Mission Impossible and Transformers

'Top Elf', 'The Substitute' and 'America’s Most Musical Family' Receive Nominations in 8th Annual American Reality TV Awards

Nickelodeon has received four nominations in the 8th annual American Reality TV Awards (ARTAS)!

Palm Desert student Thomas Nelson appears with Santa Claus on the Nickelodeon show "Top Elf."

Top Elf and The Substitute each earned a nod in the "Kids Reality Series" category, whilst America’s Most Musical Family and Top Elf have each earned a nomination in the "New Show" category (which,  to be honest, is a bit odd as the former aired in 2019 and the latter recently completed its second season run).

Public voting for the 8th annual American Reality TV Awards will open on Monday, March 1st. Fans will be able to vote by texting ARTAS to 40691.

For a full list of 2021 ARTAS nominees, visit https://www.realitytelevisionawards.com/nominees.

Congratulations and good lucky to Nickelodeon and to everyone who worked on each Nick show nominated!

Palm Desert student gets elf-tastic opportunity to raise money for local nonprofit

Palm Desert student Thomas Nelson appears with Santa Claus on the Nickelodeon show "Top Elf."

It's beginning to look a lot like "Nickmas" for one Palm Desert student.

Nickelodeon, the No. 1 entertainment brand for kids, welcomed this holiday season with season two of its festive competition series, "Top Elf." In this season's offering, Santa transported seven extraordinary kid creators to the North Pole to compete for the title of Top Elf. This year's winner will be awarded $25,000 to donate to the nonprofit of their choice.

Thomas Nelson was excited when his mom, Angie, perusing her son's middle school's Facebook page, came across a casting call to audition for a television competition that Thomas said sounded "like something not boring." A self-proclaimed Christmas addict, the young man enthusiastically submitted an audition online and was thrilled when he was invited to be among the seven "elf-testants."

In the show, Santa Claus and Ms. Jingles paired each contestant with one of Santa's elves to compete in challenges that included building a life-size countdown calendar, designing sweet treat carts for the North Pole street fair, reimagining Santa's style for a high-tech makeover, creating a scenic 3D pop-up experience and producing and starring in their very own holiday-themed music video.

Thomas' favorite part of doing the show was seeing how amazing the North Pole looked. "When I first walked in, I was so impressed and thought it looked supercool," he said via Facetime while wearing his "Son of a nutcracker" T-shirt from Will Ferrell's "Elf." "I couldn't believe I was meeting the man, the myth, the legend ... Santa Claus!"

On "Top Elf," Thomas Nelson competed for $25,000, which he planned to donate to Palm Springs-based nonprofit Boo2Bullying.

Thomas, who seems like a typical 11-year-old in some ways and well beyond his years in others, says Christmas is only one of his favorite things. His family encourages him to volunteer and to be generous to others. Being a part of "Top Elf" gave him the best gift of all — the opportunity to donate $25,000 to the charity of his choice. While he volunteers for many organizations in the Coachella Valley, including Big Hearts for Little Hearts supporting Loma Linda University Children's Health, the Boy Scouts  and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Thomas chose the Palm Springs-based nonprofit Boo2Bullying as his Wish List charity.

Boo2Bullying presents interactive, multi-media and age-appropriate school assembly programs designed for K-12 students and teachers. Last year, the organization served more than 14,000 students. For more information, contact Dimitri Halkidis at (760) 656-0309 or visit boo2bullying.org.

On Thursday's episode of "Top Elf," it was revealed that Thomas was not chosen as this season's winner; however, is very proud to have finished in the top three, and he looks forward to doing more to give back to his community.

Intellectual Virtues Academy of Long Beach also received a check of $25,000 from comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesia and Nickelodeon.

Intellectual Virtues Academy of Long Beach, a free public middle school in Long Beach, will be featured on Nickelodeon’s show ‘The Substitute’ this coming Thursday, December 10th, at 8:30 pm (Pacific).

During taping of the show, a celebrity was transformed by a team of special effects artists to go undercover as a substitute teacher – the ultimate surprise being the celebrity’s reveal to a group of unsuspecting students. IVA students and staff participated in the Christmas-themed episode with comedian/actor turned faux substitute teacher Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias.

Nickelodeon’s show ‘The Substitute’ was created to celebrate and support educational organizations through exposure to its viewers, and to provide generous monetary donations.

IVA is proud and grateful to announce that through the generosity of Iglesia and Nickelodeon, the school received a check of $25,000, which will be used to help students during a challenging year of distance learning due to COVID-19. Iglesias stated during filming that as a youth who grew up in Section 8 housing in Long Beach, giving back to the local community was important to him.

IVA opened its doors in 2013 to serve middle-school-aged students in the diverse community of Long Beach and surrounding cities. IVA also has a sister high school spanning grades 9-12.

Both schools’ curriculum and teaching models make significant use of Harvard’s Project Zero research, especially the work of Ron Ritchhart and his colleagues. Since their opening, IVA and The Academy have received national attention for implementing intellectual character growth through exposure to thoughtful, challenging and supportive academic environments.
