Nickelodeon Shutters Experimental Entertainment Lab

Nickelodeon has shut its Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, a division of the brand designed to identify and experiment with new and emerging technologies to develop new entertainment experiences across VR, AR, and AI for the entertainment company, it has been revealed. The Lab was closed in Nickelodeon in early 2020 following the Viacom-CBS merger, reports Protocol.

Launched in 2017, the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab was charged with developing new entertainment experiences for kids by identifying and experimenting with new trends in technology and emerging platforms to create new creative capabilities and entertainment. Some of the areas the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab worked on included real-time rendering, virtual cinema, virtual reality, augmented and mixed reality and artificial intelligence.

The Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab focussed on building prototypes to test new ideas, collaborating on innovation with show creators, and shaping strategy around production capabilities to fuel future content opportunities.

The Lab was headed by Chris Young. Whilst at Nickelodeon, Young was behind many of Nickelodeon's new-gen entertainment experiences for kids including: SlimeZone, a multi-player social VR experience that allows kids and families the opportunity to interact in a Nickelodeon-designed virtual world; The Loud House 360, an original video where viewers can explore the madness of the Loud family household from all angles; and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles LIVE VR Interview Experience, a virtual reality experience that immerses users in the Turtles’ iconic New York City world and allows them to have a conversation with Mikey or Donnie, voiced on the scene by the actors who play the roles. The Turtles experience debuted at San Diego Comic Con 2018. In addition to overseeing a team of artists and engineers focused on real-time animation technologies, Young also designed, built and managed a state-of-the-art virtual stage equipped for full-body motion capture and location-based virtual reality development, and conceived the concept and produced the prototype for Nickelodeon's top-rated Do Not Touch AR app.

Young also created Meet the Voxels (working title), an original TV, virtual reality and augmented reality series that follows an African-American and Latinx family where everyone is from a different video game. To produce the pilot episode, Young utilized Unreal Engine and rendered real-time using full body and facial performance capture.

Young also designed the animation pipeline and supervised real-time facial performance capture, clean-up, retargeting and key-frame animation for Project85, Nickelodeon’s first attempt at producing real-time animation in Unreal Engine. He also identified, hired and managed animation service providers, led design reviews, communicated updates to development and production teams, created and produced VR & AR companion story experiences. Project '85 was shown by Epic Games CEO and Founder, Tim Sweeney at GDC during his keynote speech.

'Meet the Voxels' to Feature African-American and Latinx Family

Ramsey Naito, the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon, has revealed in a super interview with the Viacom Newsroom more details about the network's upcoming video game-themed animated series, Meet the Voxels!

When asked about how Nickelodeon is producing content to reflect its diverse audience, Naito revealed:

"We’re also shooting a sitcom pilot called Meet the Voxels. It’s features an African-American and Latinx family where everyone is from a different video game. What’s unique about the production process on this, is we’re shooting it in a game engine, which halves the production turnaround with a fresh and contemporary visual style."

Nickelodeon originally announced the development of Meet the Voxels (working title), an original TV, virtual reality and augmented reality series conceived by Chris Young, Senior Vice President of Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab, in August 2018. The animated sitcom, created in a game engine, marks a first for Nickelodeon in its use of cutting-edge virtual cinema technology, including real-time full body and facial performance capture, bringing an innovative approach to immersive storytelling. Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab is the network’s division established to spearhead long-range research and development around emerging platforms and new technology. Meet the Voxels is being developed to air across Nickelodeon’s channels globally.

Meet the Voxels takes kids behind the scenes of a video game world and follows a family of video-game characters, the Voxels, on their adventures on-and-off-duty. When the project was first announced, the family members were named: Hunter, the 13-year-old star of a laser-tag video game; Maude, a 16-year-old girl fighting to pop as many bubbles as she can; their younger brother Cody who has not found his video game calling yet; Mom, a popular street fighter in her game; and Dad, a 90’s-era classic console game character who quit the business years ago. It's currently unknown whether any of these details have changed since the property was originally announced.

The pilot for Meet the Voxels has been written by Jana Petrosini (Henry Danger, Kid Danger, Game Shakers) and Sean Gill (Henry Danger, Kid Danger, Game Shakers).

Update (12/8) - Nickelodeon Animation is now hiring staff to work on the show! The current open job openings are:

Said Young, “Our vision is to take the real-time technology we’ve been exploring in the Lab and marry it with a creative concept that connects with kids and their passion for video games. We designed this next-gen animation workflow and filled it with characters who can exist naturally across multiple platforms from day one.”

Meet the Voxels represents a significant expansion of both the Entertainment Lab’s capabilities and Young’s work. To date, the Lab has been responsible for the creation and implementation of SlimeZone and The Loud House 360, and now Meet the Voxels represents an evolution of content development and creation using real-time animation technology.

“Chris is helping lead Nickelodeon animation toward a transformation into a wholly new content creation studio,” said Chris Viscardi, who was serving as Senior Vice President, Animation when the show was first announced. “Meet the Voxels marks a significant development in turning that content dream into a production reality.”

Over the past couple of years, Young has developed new entertainment experiences for kids including: SlimeZone, a multi-player social VR experience that allows kids and families the opportunity to interact in a Nickelodeon-designed virtual world; The Loud House 360, an original video where viewers can explore the madness of the Loud family household from all angles; and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VR Interview Experience, a virtual reality experience that immerses users in the Turtles’ iconic New York City world and allows them to have a conversation with Mikey or Donnie, voiced on the scene by the actors who play the roles. The Turtles experience debuted at San Diego Comic Con 2018.

Young will help to guide further development of a larger slate of animated projects to be announced shortly.

Prior to overseeing Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab, Young previously served as Executive Creative Director, Nickelodeon Animation Lab, where he focused on exploring and engineering alternative animation pipelines. Prior to that role, he held the title of Producer at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank. Young began his entertainment industry career at age 15 when he starred as boy genius Bryce Lynch on the cult TV series Max Headroom. Before becoming a producer and director, Young starred in the feature films The Great Outdoors, Book of Love and PCU. He produced Disney Channel’s animated movie The Proud Family, developed, produced and starred in the NBC movie Killing Mr. Griffin and served as executive producer and director on 26 half-hour episodes of Discovery Channel’s The Adventures of A.R.K. Young also founded and served as Chief Creative Officer of Animobile, a forerunner in the mobile gaming space, where he designed and oversaw the production of over two dozen original mobile games for multiple handheld devices.

Nickelodeon Developing New AR/VR Animated Series 'Meet the Voxels'

Update - Below is Nickelodeon's official Press Release announcing the news:

NICKELODEON BREAKS GROUND WITH DEVELOPMENT OF VIRTUAL

AND AUGMENTED REALITY SERIES FOR TV

Chris Young, Head of Net’s Emerging-Tech Division—The Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab to Oversee Meet the Voxels (Working Title) Development and Production

BURBANK, Calif.—Aug. 2, 2018—Nickelodeon today announced the development of Meet the Voxels (working title), an original TV, virtual reality and augmented reality series conceived by Chris Young, Senior Vice President of Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab.

The family members (all names working titles) are: Hunter, the 13-year-old star of a laser-tag video game; Maude, a 16-year-old girl fighting to pop as many bubbles as she can; their younger brother Cody who has not found his video game calling yet; Mom, a popular street fighter in her game; and Dad, a 90’s-era classic console game character who quit the business years ago.

The pilot for Meet the Voxels will be written by Jana Petrosini (Henry Danger, Kid Danger, Game Shakers) and Sean Gill (Henry Danger, Kid Danger, Game Shakers).

“Chris is helping lead Nickelodeon animation toward a transformation into a wholly new content creation studio,” said Chris Viscardi, Senior Vice President, Animation. “Meet the Voxels marks a significant development in turning that content dream into a production reality.”

Over the past year, Young has developed new entertainment experiences for kids including: SlimeZone, a multi-player social VR experience that allows kids and families the opportunity to interact in a Nickelodeon-designed virtual world; The Loud House 360, an original video where viewers can explore the madness of the Loud family household from all angles; and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles VR Interview Experience, a virtual reality experience that immerses users in the Turtles’ iconic New York City world and allows them to have a conversation with Mikey or Donnie, voiced on the scene by the actors who play the roles.

Nickelodeon’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Go Virtual at Comic-Con 2018 | NickSDCC [Updated]

Nickelodeon has big plans to introduce its reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise during Comic-Con 2018 with a virtual-reality (VR) experience that will put journalists and some lucky superfans directly into the show’s animated universe to chat live with two of the Turtles, Donatello and Michelangelo.

The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live experience, set for Friday, July 20, is the latest project from Nickelodeon’s cutting-edge Entertainment Lab, which launched last year to experiment with new and emerging technologies and broaden entertainment options for Nick’s audiences.

“It’s really fun,” Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, told Variety. “There’s a great moment when you realize you’re fully immersed inside of the Turtles’ universe. The characters that you know really well are right in front of you, and you can have a conversation with them.”

The team has constructed a green-screen cube, which is where users will put on HTC Vive VR headsets and immediately find themselves in a stylized New York street scene.

“The idea is that the person will be in the Ninja Turtle reboot universe,” explains Young. “A camera is filming the journalist and compositing them live in real time into the environment. They’ll have a big Nickelodeon cartoon avatar head that can be chosen ahead of time.”

It’s quite a setup behind the scenes, with several high-powered gaming computers, video and audio technicians, and a team of puppeteers making the Turtles move while the actors respond to the reporter’s or fan’s questions. Josh Brener, who voices Donatello, and Brandon Mychal Smith, who plays Michelangelo, will be on hand at Comic-Con to interact with users in real time. The puppeteers are stationed so they can watch the actors as they improv and create the animated performance.

“We’ll be able to switch between different shots as the interview is happening,” says Young. “We can cut between all those things. That’s the technical side. Then there are some really interesting things happening on the audio side in order to create the proper delays and have everybody talking in sync. That audio is driving the character animation. The big idea is that we should have a little video package to hand to people when they’re done with their interview.”

The Entertainment Lab team worked with Adobe Character Animator, Epic Unreal Engine and NewTek NDI to create the VR experience. And this is just one of a number of projects the experimental lab is working on. “This built on a lot of stuff that we’ve been doing in the lab over the last couple of years, specifically around this virtual cinema, mixed reality, VR pipeline,” Young says.

Earlier this year, the team debuted Nickelodeon and Imax’s SlimeZone, a multi-player social virtual-reality experience at IMAX VR Centers as well as a 360-degree episode of Nick’s popular animated series The Loud House.

“A lot of that fundamentally applied to what we’re doing here,” Young explains. “A lot of it was copying and pasting over a curve that we had already implemented. Then it was just refining it to do exactly what this needed to do, which is stream these puppets into a VR environment and still have the mixed-reality live component.”

This is just the beginning for the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab. “It’s still very early days in all this technology, whether it’s VR or AR or mixed reality,” Young says. “A lot of what we do in the lab is experiment around those areas. We’re fortunate to have access to iconic IP, so there are things like the Comic-Con experience with the Turtles that just feel right.”

And Nickelodeon is not at a loss for content to bring to new platforms. “You can see how easy it is for us to take our properties and put them into these new platforms and be able to share them as far as the new technology allows for it to be shared,” Young says.

And Nick’s young viewers will be the beneficiaries. “We’re always interested in being where kids are,” Young says. “We know they have a passion for these kinds of things, so we want to bring them as many opportunities to connect with our brand as possible.”

In addition to Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live, Nickelodeon's SDCC 2018 booth will feature a towering New York City cityscape, featuring the bright lights, energy and iconic billboards of Times Square, as well as a hidden Turtles lair, housing a gif opportunity. Nickelodeon's full Comic-Con International: San Diego 2018 plans can be found here.

Inside the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, the Network’s R&D Unit

Nickelodeon is celebrating the launch of the third season of its hit animated comedy series The Loud House today (Friday 19th January 2018) with a 360-degree video that lets viewers explore the madness of the Loud family household literally from all angles!

The video has been produced by Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab, a small research and development unit that spent the past year quietly working away on internal projects. As it is getting ready to release more of its work to the public, Variety recently got a aweslime behind-the-scenes look at Lab, its stage-sized VR setups, hacked arcade machines and crazy virtual reality slime fights.

Nickelodeon SVP Chris Young began exploring new technologies for the network in 2014. In May of last year, Nickelodeon made his mission official, and created the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, a group of six staffers looking to explore virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and everything in between. “The Lab is really tasked with a long-term view of where entertainment is headed,” Young explained as he recently gave Variety a tour of their facilities, housed on the mezzanine level of the original building at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California.

That tour began with a look at a stage customized for developing location-based VR experiences that can be used by multiple players at the same time. Much like other location-based VR setups, the Lab has also been using dozens of tracking cameras and special computer backpacks that make it possible to freely walk around within the experience while wearing a VR headset. Young explained that he wanted to go beyond the constraints of a typical consumer-grade VR setup. “I was interested in doing something at much bigger scale,” he said.

In a corner, a desk was littered with cables, soldering irons and random parts. Young explained that he wasn’t happy with the fact that your typical VR setup doesn’t know whether you raise your hand, or step forward with one foot. “We really want to have full body presence.” And since commercial body tracking solutions are still evolving, Young decided to build his own tracking devices, with a little help from a 3D printer.

The Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab is developing its own tracking hardware for location-based VR. CREDIT: Janko Roettgers / Variety

The Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab has done extensive work in VR, much of which will never be seen outside of the walls of the network’s facility. This included Sage, an animated VR short film from Nickelodeon supervising director Dan Krall about an elf in a magical forest.

Lab employees also experimented with alternative controllers for VR to get beyond the awkward task of having to teach players the use of buttons for a particular game. “Kids know super-soakers, and they know what a banana is,” quipped Young — so why not use these everyday items for VR games? At one point, Young even created a life-sized model of his office in virtual reality, which allowed him to use his real office as a playground for motion capture and other experiments.

But not all of the Lab’s work is focused on VR. One of the team’s offices is being used for real-time video animation for Facebook Live streams. With the help of some X-Keys Midi controllers, Lab employees were able to animate cartoon characters in real-time, making them frown, jump and wave just by hitting a few buttons. Their mouth movements were automatically synchronized to live speech input Adobe’s Character Animator app, which works a bit like the software powering Apple’s Animoji. “I call these guys cartoon DJs,” joked Young about employees using the hardware.

The Lab’s most famous project thus far has been Slime Zone, a social multiplayer VR experience that was first shown at Vidcon last year. In it, players find themselves in a colorful animated world where they can shoot green slime at each other, play ping-pong or basketball, or just watch videos together, chat and hang out. Every now and then, Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and even Korra make an appearance.

Imagine an 8-year-old’s birthday party where everyone had way too much cake and soda and is bouncing off the walls, but in VR, and you get the picture. It’s a lot of fun, and a way for the Lab to play with a bunch of different modalities around social VR. Team members also wanted to try to bridge the gap between the new medium and other screens, and went full circle on video gaming by porting Slime Zone to an arcade machine.

There’s no word yet if and when the Slime Zone will ever turn into a commercial product, but you shouldn’t be too surprised to see more of the Lab’s work actually reach consumers. For instance, Lab employees have been working on augmented reality characters based on Apple’s ARKit that may get released in the near future.

And there will likely also be more 360 videos, since the Loud House project was used to set up an internal workflow. “The process we set up to handle the 360 output allowed the animators to approach the production in the same way they create the TV show,” said Young. “With this process, it was a seamless step from storyboards, to animation, to final 360 render.”

Some Nickelodeon Entertainment Labs projects may seem silly, but listen to Young, and you start to understand that there’s more to it. Ultimately, he argued, it’s all about a shift from traditional production methods to tools that can be used and manipulated live. “The future is real-time,” he said. “Working real-time is fundamental to this technology.”

Young and his team have for instance been testing the quality level of game engines, which are traditionally used for real-time video-game graphics rendering. As part of that work, the Lab also produced an animated short film rendered entirely in a game engine. The goal was not only to show that the results look comparable to traditional animation, but also that the assets could be changed on the fly, and even adapted to new mediums. After producing the short film in 2D, the team put the same assets into VR. “And then we took the VR experience, and put it onto HoloLens,” recalled Young.

Ultimately, Nickelodeon could start to use game engines more widely to produce animated shows, Young predicted: “As a company, we are very interested in it.”

Chris Young Discusses the Future Role of Immersive Technology at Nickelodeon

Since the late 1960s when inventor Douglas Engelbart created the first virtual reality headset, consumers have been itching at the opportunity to place themselves in an immersive world. Unfortunately, the technology has always been too bulky, too expensive, and too lacking to do so — until now. Within in the past year, companies like Facebook, HTC, and Microsoft have announced plans of releasing affordable standalone VR headsets for around $200, meaning that consumers will soon be able to experience the word of VR — beyond attaching a phone to a pair of goggles — without having to use a whole month’s pay to buy it. With virtual reality becoming more accessible for the average consumer, and augmented reality — VR’s more popular sister — deepening its roots in the entertainment industry, creators have been faced with the challenge of developing content that utilizes the features of immersive formats while remaining entertaining for the user.

Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP) of Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, a division of Nickelodeon designed to identify and experiment with new and emerging technologies, has been at the forefront of developing new entertainment experiences across VR, AR, and AI for the entertainment company.

In VideoInk's latest ‘5 Questions,’ Young discusses the role of immersive tech in Nickelodeon’s future, the importance of positional tracking in immersive storytelling, and the most important thing to remember when creating immersive content for children.

Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP), Entertainment Lab

VideoInk: What role will immersive technology play in Nickelodeon’s future, and what steps is the company taking to get there?

Chris Young: It’s hard to know exactly where entertainment is headed as it relates to immersive technology. That’s the reason why the lab exists – to explore what those possibilities might be. When you think about virtual reality and what it’s really great at doing, it provides the user with the opportunity to be fully present or immersed inside of these worlds. At Nickelodeon, we are world builders and we author these environments and universes with our characters, and it lends itself to virtual reality. It’s a very powerful idea for a creator to be able to put their audience inside the worlds they create and let them interact with the characters that they love.

Where does Nickelodeon see the most opportunity in: AR, VR, or AI — and why?

Right now, the opportunity is equal across all these technologies because we don’t exactly know which ones are going to emerge as the most readily available. A combination of all these will exist in some form or another, and we believe we can be successful within all these different platforms. We’ve seen the recent launch of ARKit and ARCore and you can imagine how quickly those technologies will scale with all the hardware already in place. Virtual reality, in a very short time, has come a very long way, so that is another great opportunity to see that this hardware will become more widely accessible. AI has a tremendous foothold in the future of the ability to interact with characters and have a different kind of entertainment experience that we couldn’t have before we could artificially drive character interaction.

Due to its high cost, VR is known to be one of the more inaccessible formats on the market. How does Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab plan to overcome this obstacle?

It’s not our job to overcome the barriers that exist right now in VR – it’s about trying to understand the best way to author for these platforms, and also understand what kind of entertainment experiences really work for them. I won’t argue that the high-end VR systems are mostly out of reach for our audience, as that is the exact reality, but increasingly those costs are coming down and that hardware is becoming more readily accessible. When the time is right, and within the context of kids being able to choose those experiences and that hardware along with their parents, we’ll let them make the decision for themselves.

Nickelodeon Slime Zone VR experience

The industry is starting to see the emergence of standalone VR headsets, but most come without positional tracking, meaning the user can’t interact with the content. How important is this (if at all) when it comes to telling stories through the format?

It’s really important – anything that makes the user feel more immersed and fully present inside of the virtual space is the key to creating something that is really compelling and entertaining. I am a big believer in six degrees of freedom and the ability to touch and manipulate objects in the space. All of these things will help. The friction that exists around cameras that you have to set up in the room to track your location need to go away to make a more seamless experience. That said, even in its current form, it’s very transformative and that’s what makes it exciting.

What is the most important thing to remember when creating immersive content for children?

Like anything we do, it has to be entertaining and fun, and it has to align with our mission to make the world a more playful place. We really think about how we can provide that value and create that kind of experience with this technology.

Nickelodeon Explores Tech R&D with New Entertainment Lab

Nickelodeon has announced the launch of its new Burbank-based Entertainment Lab, which will spearhead long-range research and development efforts around new technologies for Nickelodeon and its audience! The facility will be led by the former creative director of Nickelodeon Animation Lab, Chris Young.

“The Entertainment Lab primarily is focused on alternative authoring pipelines and platforms, which is a fancy way of saying we've been looking at real-time rendering capabilities and using specifically game engine technology to take a long range look at what the possibilities are for reimagining CG pipelines,” says Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP), Entertainment Lab.

The lab will focus on identifying and experimenting with emerging technologies, and develop entertainment experiences for kids across all lines of business, by identifying and experimenting with new trends in technology and emerging platforms to create new creative capabilities, and entertainment for kids and families. Some of the areas Nickelodeon is working on include real-time rendering, virtual cinema, virtual reality, augmented and mixed reality and artificial intelligence, all of which could shape new entertainment content for the Viacom-owned kidsnet.

“It’s about looking at tools as well as the types of content that we might make for kids and how we might choose to entertain them down the line,” says Young.

That includes going to places beyond television children already are watching, like mobile, tablets and video games. The company is taking a more conservative approach to virtual reality as it relates to children, but sees big potential in mixed reality [MR] and augmented reality [AR].

“It’s important for us as a company to know as much as we can, to have the right vocabulary as it relates to creating this kind of content, and a real deep understanding of how the tool sets work,” he says.

Using a long-range strategy, the Entertainment Lab will build prototypes to test new concepts, partner on innovation with creators, shape strategy around production capabilities to fuel future content opportunities, and evolve Nick’s production capabilities with new tech discoveries.

Housed on the mezzanine level of the original building at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California, the lab currently has four employees in addition to Young and will grow as needed.

Chris Young, Senior Vice President (SVP), Entertainment Lab

Young will report to Matthew Evans, Nickelodeon's Executive Vice President (EVP) of Digital and New Business, as well as James Stephenson, SVP of Original Animation.

In his previous role, Young concentrated on analyzing and engineering alternative animation pipelines. Prior to his lab work, he served as a Nickelodeon Animation Studio producer in Burbank.

“We’ve rebranded Animation Lab as the Entertainment Lab so we can look across all lines of business and try to connect some of the things we’re doing not just in animation, but in live-action, theme parks and games, too,” says Young.

“We’re seeing this new wave emerge around VR and mixed reality being driven by the notion of real-time rendered content. We’ve been investing a lot of time and energy in looking at game engine technology and how we can use it to leverage what has typically been a very traditional CG pipeline.”

To this end, the Lab has been working closely with Chris Savino, creator of Nick’s hit animated series The Loud House, to develop a real-time puppet version of the show’s star, Lincoln Loud, called 'Lincoln Live'.

Using its existing relationship with Adobe, the Lab helped the computer software company build a character animator tool. “We’ve been using that to create topical, real-time conversations on social media using Lincoln as a real-time puppet character,” says Young.

In addition, the Lab recently created a robust tech demo called Nickelodeon Slime Zone. It’s a social VR experience that puts kids and their families inside a giant Nickelodeon play space where they can watch cartoons, compete in multiplayer games, create art and run around and shoot each other with virtual slime blasters.

“We shared it at scale during the opening party in Burbank for the 2017 Kids’ Choice Awards. We put groups of six people in at a time and got a tremendous response. We’ll be sharing it at conferences and in a couple of select places over the next few months. But we’re taking a thoughtful approach for how and what we want to bring to market,” says Young.

The Slime Zone arrives on the heels of Nick’s new partnership with Cra-Z-Art to market and distribute branded DIY slime kits across the US.

As it looks for other potentially sticky tech concepts, the Lab is also sharing insights with Viacom's New York-based digital research and development hub, Viacom Lab, which opened last year.

“One of the greatest things about working with the Viacom family under Bob Bakish's leadership is that he’s brought all these groups together and broken down the silos. We talk a lot with the Viacom Next group, which is part of Viacom Lab, and everyone is sharing information across divisions,” says Young.

Bakish became Viacom CEO and president in November 2016 and reestablished its Kids and Family Group as Nickelodeon Group. The division is currently putting more focus on its Nickelodeon kids cable channel and leveraging additional growth opportunities around its kids business, including recreation and hospitality.

As part of a new five-point turnaround plan announced earlier this year, Viacom plans to deepen its partnerships to drive digital revenue, bolster Viacom’s live experiences and consumer products business, and create the company's first-ever short-form content unit, which will feature new original IP (intellectual properties) and existing programming.

“Our Entertainment Lab is a way to give our artists and creators access to innovative tools to inspire new ways to tell stories for the next generation of kids,” said Cyma Zarghami, President, Nickelodeon Group. “We are working with technology partners, gaming and visual effects companies and our own creators to bring our IP to new platforms, in new formats, and faster.”

Nickelodeon are aware that VR technology is in a bit of a grey area when it comes to kids. “We want to take it slow and determine what the long term effects might be,” added Young, “we’re on that evolutionary cycle where now it is time to reach out and share some of the things we’re doing and talk about it.”
