‘Dora And The Search For Sol Dorado’ Movie Taps Jacob Rodriguez For Role of Diego

Up-and-coming actor Jacob Rodriguez (Tell Me Lies) has landed the male lead in Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado (working title), the new live-action family film being produced for Nickelodeon and Paramount+ by Nickelodeon Studios, Deadline is reporting.

With Samantha Lorraine on board for the title role, as previously announced, Rodriguez will play Diego, the adventurous and resourceful cousin of Dora, who starred in his own Dora the Explorer spin-off, Go, Diego, Go!.

Directed by Alberto Belli (Upload and Naughty Nine and Black Scorpion) from a script by JT Billings (Are You Afraid of the Dark?), the film will watch as Dora, Diego, and their new friends trek through the perilous dangers of the Amazonian jungle in search of the ancient and powerful treasure of Sol Dorado to keep it out of enemy hands.

Sol Dorado marks the second live-action feature out of the world of Dora the Explorer, on the heels of 2019’s Dora and the Lost City of Gold. Directed by James Bobin and starring Isabela Merced as Dora and Jeffrey Wahlberg as Diego, that film grossed over $120 million worldwide. Adam Bonnett is serving as executive producer of the new project.

Lauded for its interactive format and bilingual content spanning English and Spanish, the beloved Dora the Explorer franchise kicked off with a Nickelodeon animated series of the same same, created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes, and Eric Weiner, which ran for 177 episodes across eight seasons. The show centers on Dora, a young Latina girl, who embarks on various adventures with her talking backpack and map, often accompanied by her monkey friend, Boots, among others.

One of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time, which over the years has generated billions in retail sales, Dora has also spawned the follow-up series Go, Diego, Go! and Dora and Friends: Into the City, as well as a more recent animated reboot for Paramount+ — also from Gifford and Valdes — which premiered in April and has been renewed for a second season. Nickelodeon also recently launched Dora's Recipe For Adventure, a dedicated Dora the Explorer podcast for preschoolers.

A Mexican American actor from the small agricultural town of Dinuba, California, Rodriguez can next be seen in a recurring role in the second season of Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, which is set to premiere this fall. Among his other upcoming projects is Hal & Harper, the buzzy, independently produced TV series from rising filmmaker Cooper Raiff.

Paramount+ and Nickelodeon Order New ‘Dora the Explorer’ Live-Action Movie Starring Samantha Lorraine

Alberto Belli will direct the family adventure feature for Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.

Samantha Lorraine is putting on her backpack.

The actor, best known for her key role in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, has been cast as the titular heroine in Nickelodeon Studios’ new live-action Dora the Explorer feature being made for Paramount+ and Nickelodeon, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

Alberto Belli, who directed Disney+ holiday feature The Naughty Nine and episodes of Disney show Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion, is helming the new production that has a working title of Dora and the Search for Sol Dorado.

Written by J.T. Billings , the script follows as Dora, her cousin Diego and their new friends trek through perilous dangers of the Amazonian jungle in search of the ancient treasure of Sol Dorado in order to keep this powerful treasure out of enemy hands. Swiper no swiping!

Sol Dorado will be only the second time the adventurous Latina has been translated to the live-action world. Isabela Merced played the character in a 2019 movie directed by James Bobin that was released theatrically.

Dora the Explorer, initially a long-running animated preschool series that began on Nickelodeon in 2000, is one of the Paramount’s biggest and more profitable franchises, with its impact felt through multiple series, merchandizing tie-ins, video games and toys. Dora, a new preschool CG-animated series, debuted on Paramount+ in April and a second season is already greenlit.

Lorraine played Lydia Rodriguez Katz in My Bat Mitzvah, the offending best friend in 2023’s well-regarded Netflix coming-of-age comedy. The film revolved around Lydia’s friendship with the main character, Stacy Friedman (Sunny Sandler). The actor is a relative newcomer to the screen. She earned her first credit in 2020 on PBS series Kid Stew. That same year, she also appeared on AMC’s The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

Lorraine is repped by Buchwald, Venture, Stellar Talent and Goodman Genow.

Nickelodeon Animation Workers Ratify The Animation Guild Union Contract

After nearly 1 year of negotiations, the studio’s animation production workers ratified a new contract prioritizing their well-being and professional development.

Nickelodeon Animation

Following almost a year of negotiations, The Animation Guild (TAG) announced the ratification of a new contract for animation workers at Nickelodeon Studios that combines agreements for 2D, 3D, and production workers into one comprehensive contract. The milestone agreement was overwhelmingly ratified by 89% of participating workers who voted for the new deal.

Negotiations Committee member Candice Stephenson said, “This contract is the direct result of not only a strong public showing of solidarity among our members but also demonstrates the power of what multiple crafts working together can do.”

“The work of the Nickelodeon Animation Studios Negotiation Committee mirrored the cohesive solidarity of the Negotiations Committee that bargained the 2021-2024 Master Agreement,” said TAG business representative Steve Kaplan. “We were able to get the company to voluntarily recognize animation production before negotiations and include production workers for the first time. The committee stood strong on all of our priority issues and helped deliver a groundbreaking agreement.”

“It’s hard to encapsulate how much effort member-volunteers of the committee put into researching, communicating, informing, organizing, energizing, huddling, retooling, negotiating, arguing, fighting for better terms,” added committee member Kyle Neswald.

The newly ratified contract introduces provisions prioritizing the well-being and professional development of animation workers at the studio, including:

  • Enhanced Bereavement Leave: Employees will have access to three days of bereavement leave.
  • Minimum Staffing Requirements: The contract establishes minimum staffing requirements for writers, requiring at least two staff writers in addition to supervisory roles.
  • Increased Compensation for Storyboard Artists: Storyboard artists who undertake writing responsibilities will receive a 15% increase in their minimum compensation.
  • Wage Increases for Production Workers: Increased wages for production workers.
  • Compensation for CG Supervisors: CG supervisors will receive a 15% increase in their minimum compensation.

“We are securing a raise for our lowest-paid members,” added production coordinator and Negotiations Committee member Claire Norris. “Throughout the last year of negotiations, the passion and hard work of everyone at the studio has helped us set important precedents for multiple animation crafts.”

“Nickelodeon Animation Studios is pleased to have reached this agreement with The Animation Guild,” said Brian Keane, EVP Production & Operations, Nickelodeon. “This agreement reflects Nickelodeon’s commitment to being a best-in-class workplace and will support the continued growth of our business. We commend the union for their hard work in securing this contract and look forward to our continued collaboration.”

The Animation Guild contract ratification came nearly six months after Nickelodeon Animation editors ratified a new contract with the Motion Picture Editors Guild (IATSE Local 700) in September 2023 to include wage increases ranging from 9% to as much as 70% over the next year.

Editors Guild Unanimously Ratifies New Nickelodeon Contract

The Motion Picture Editors Guild has ratified a new animation deal with Nickelodeon, a bit of good labor good news Monday (September 18) as the Writers Guild strike hits 140 days, the SAG-AFRTA strike hits 67 days and almost all production is shut down.

Motion Picture Editors Guild and Nickelodeon logos on a picture of 'Bossy Bear'
'Bossy Bear' / Nickelodeon / Deadline.

The Editors Guild agreement was approved unanimously September 14 over Zoom, Deadline has been told. About 70 post-production members of the Cathy Repola-led guild are affected by the new four-year contract.

“Witnessing this kind of solidarity throughout this challenging process was awe-inspiring,” Repola told Deadline about the conclusion of a six-month effort to make a deal with the Paramount Global-owned outlet. “It was such an honor for our team to represent them and to help them achieve a contract they are proud of. The negotiating committee needs to be commended; they spoke with a single voice and a single vision and vowed that no one would be left behind. In the end, nobody was.”

With wage increases from 9% to nearly 70% over the next year, last week’s ratification vote came after the Editors Guild had to twice make it known to the other side that it was willing to take their fight to the picket lines. The most recent missive from the Animation Guild and the 9,000-strong IATSE Local 700 in late August seems to be the tipping point that led to a deal just days later. There have also been discussions to add animation writers to the WGA once the current strike is over.

In a Hollywood that has been deeply hit the past four months over the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the Editors Guild deal offers at least a glimmer of optimism in what could be a pivotal week.

It also offers some cold hard cash.

The last contract with Nickelodeon expired February 28, which means this new agreement’s wage bumps are retroactive to March and could see more increases out of the next Basic Agreement negotiations.

Harvey Guillén Reprising Cousin Blobbin Role in ‘The Thundermans Return’

Harvey Guillén (What We Do In The Shadows) is set to reprise the role of Cousin Blobbin in the Nickelodeon film The Thundermans Return, a follow-up of the network’s hit comedy series The Thundermans.

Harvey Guillén | Credit: Zachariah Schmitt

The Thundermans Return will follow the superpowered family as they begin a new era of superhero crime fighting. Production on The Thundermans Return is underway.

In the movie, twins Phoebe (Kira Kosarin) and Max (Jack Griffo) are enjoying their superhero lifestyle, but when one ‘save’ goes awry, the Thundermans are sent back to Hiddenville. While Hank (Chris Tallman) and Barb (Rosa Blasi) enjoy their return, and Billy (Diego Velazquez) and Nora look forward to a normal high school life, Max and Phoebe are determined to regain their superhero status. Maya Le Clark also returns as Chloe. Dana Snyder is also expected to return as the voice of Dr. Colosso, the criminal mastermind bunny.

Guillén made his series debut in the Season 1 episode “Weekend Guest” and recurred across the show’s four seasons, becoming a fan-favorite character.

The Thundermans Return is written and executive produced by Jed Spingarn and directed by Trevor Kirschner. Kira Kosarin is executive producing. Jack Griffo is also an executive producer of the movie. Dan Cross & David Hoge also serve as executive producers. Production of the movie for Nickelodeon Studios is overseen by Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. Brian Banks serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production.

Guillén is a rising star whose breakout role was in FX’s What We Do in the Shadows playing Guillermo De La Cruz, a vampire familiar whose life is changed when he discovers he’s the ancestor of fang slayer Van Helsing. With that knowledge, Guillermo is constantly toeing the line between being loyal and faithful to his manipulative vampire overlords and slaying their souls into the beyond—always in hysterical fashion.

Most recently, his voice is featured alongside Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek as Perrito, in DreamWork’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. Next, he can be seen in the Warner Bros. film Blue Beetle, starring opposite Xolo Maridueña, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez, which is set to release in August, as well as the upcoming Disney+ movie Alexander 2. A reimagination of Judith Viorst's book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Guillén will portray the character of Claudio, a healer who helps the young titular hero take steps in the right direction. Production is underway in New Mexico.

Additional credits include Amazon’s Reacher, NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, DC’s Harley Quinn and Apple TV+’s Shape Island, among others. Guillén is repped by Innovative Artists and Yorn, Levine, Barnes, Krintzman, et al.

In the movie, twins Phoebe and Max are enjoying their superhero lifestyle, but when one ‘save’ goes awry, the Thundermans are sent back to Hiddenville. CEO and president Brian Robbins confirmed the news in a memo to staff on Thursday (Feb. 2) night, writing that Gumpert has “decided to leave” the studios. The executive most recently served as COO, Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon Studios, and had been with the company with since 2017, joining as COO and adding Nickelodeon to his purview in March of 2022.

“Since joining Paramount as COO in 2017 and expanding his responsibilities to include Nickelodeon last year, Andrew has successfully strengthened our relationships across all aspects of our business–overseeing negotiations with our strategic, creative, and financial partners and licensees, and collaborating with our teams to expand and evolve our revenue sources,” Robbins said in the memo.

In a statement provided to Robbins, Gumpert said, “The opportunity to lead and work alongside all of my incredible Paramount colleagues has been an exceptional privilege. Together, we have achieved amazing things, and I will always be grateful for your partnership. I’ve been contemplating the next chapter of my career and I’m excited to figure out what’s next. I am confident that this organization will continue to lead the industry.”

In the wake of the exit, Courtney Armstrong, president of business affairs and administration, will assume responsibility for strategic planning and labor relations. She will report to Robbins. Randall Baumberger, president of the Studio Group, will oversee studio operations, reporting to Robbins.

Gumpert came to Paramount from Sony, and he began his career with the law firm Hill, Wynne, Troop and Meisinger.

See Robbins’ full memo below.

All,

I want to let you know about a change today to our senior leadership team at Paramount and Nickelodeon. Andrew Gumpert has decided to leave his role as Chief Operations Officer, Paramount Pictures & Nickelodeon Studios, effective this week.

Since joining Paramount as COO in 2017 and expanding his responsibilities to include Nickelodeon last year, Andrew has successfully strengthened our relationships across all aspects of our business–overseeing negotiations with our strategic, creative, and financial partners and licensees, and collaborating with our teams to expand and evolve our revenue sources.

He has played an integral role in fueling the success of our global franchises, including Mission: Impossible, PAW Patrol, Sonic the Hedgehog, Star Trek, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Top Gun: Maverick, and Transformers, among others. He has also been an important advocate for our company culture and a champion of our ongoing dedication to diversity and inclusion.

Andrew leaves us at a time of incredible strength at Paramount, with 2022 being the first year in nearly a decade where we crossed $1 Billion at the domestic box office and ranked as a top three Studio. And this year, we are again poised to deliver another powerful and wide-ranging slate of films to audiences around the world.

Andrew wanted me to share with you, “The opportunity to lead and work alongside all of my incredible Paramount colleagues has been an exceptional privilege. Together, we have achieved amazing things, and I will always be grateful for your partnership. I’ve been contemplating the next chapter of my career and I’m excited to figure out what’s next. I am confident that this organization will continue to lead the industry.”

Following today’s news, Courtney Armstrong, President of Business Affairs and Administration, will assume responsibility for Strategic Planning and Labor Relations and will now report to me; and Randall Baumberger, President of the Studio Group, will oversee Studio Operations, also reporting to me.

I know we are all grateful for Andrew’s immeasurable contributions to our organization, so please join me in thanking him and wishing him the absolute best in the future.

–Brian

Nickelodeon Animation Agrees to Voluntarily Recognize Production Workers

About a month after The Animation Guild filed for a National Labor Relations Board election, Nickelodeon has chosen to bypass that process by agreeing to recognize a bargaining unit of 177 workers.

Nickelodeon Animation Studios has agreed to voluntarily recognize The Animation Guild as the bargaining representative for production workers at the studio. Production workers at the Nickelodeon studio overwhelmingly decided to unionize in early December 2022 and requested voluntary recognition.

To date, this is the largest bargaining unit of production workers to organize under The Animation Guild. The proposed unit would cover 177 employees in specified classifications including Production Managers, Production Coordinators, Post-Production Assistants, Asset Production Coordinators, and more.

The Organizing Committee, which led the drive to unionize production workers at the studio, stated, “The organizing committee is overwhelmingly thrilled that Nickelodeon Animation Studios has decided to voluntarily recognize their production workers as members of The Animation Guild. By doing this, the studio has shown that they are willing and ready to recognize the hard work, time, and love we pour into our productions. We are so excited to work with them and our artist colleagues to come to an agreement that reiterates their support for what we do.”

The Animation Guild has an existing collective bargaining agreement with Nickelodeon Animation Studios that covers more than 400 artists, including CG technicians, storyboard artists, character designers, and writers. No negotiation dates have been set yet. However, the Negotiations Committee will expand to include representatives from the production bargaining unit.

According to Steve Kaplan, Business Representative of The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839, “I am glad that we were able to reach an agreement where Nickelodeon Animation Studios recognized both the determination of the animation production workers and our long-standing productive labor relations relationship. I look forward to bargaining a successor agreement.”

“Nickelodeon Animation Studios supports its talented and dedicated production workers who play an instrumental role in the making of our content,” said Brian Keane, Executive Vice President, Production and Operations, Nickelodeon Animation Studios. “The studio’s collaborative relationship with The Animation Guild spans many years, and we look forward to bargaining an agreement with the union covering this new group of employees.”

In their initial announcement of their organizing effort at Nickelodeon, production workers went public about their complaints of inadequate pay, with one worker saying, “the current pay gap for production roles makes it near impossible to survive in Los Angeles.” Another stated that “many” colleagues worked additional jobs or overtime, sought loans, or asked friends and family for financial help.

In early December, TAG claimed that the company responded to a request for voluntary recognition by attempting to exclude certain workers from joining the bargaining unit and by seeking to cover production workers under a separate contract from studio artists. The voluntary recognition agreement resolves those concerns, with TAG’s desired bargaining unit included in full and the production workers covered under the same contract as Nickelodeon artists, but under their own sideletter.
