Will Viacom Deal Boost Brightcove's Shares?

On September 10, Brightcove — a video cloud services provider with 6,300 customers in 65 countries — announced that Viacom is using its service. My September 10 interview with Brightcove CEO, David Mendels, suggests that this deal could accelerate the company’s growth.

More specifically, Viacom — that broadcasts MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central — is using Brightcove Video Cloud to deliver videos on “device platforms” including Apple iOS, Google Android and Xbox. The videos will help Viacom measure audiences and deliver in-stream advertising.

Brightcove is helping Viacom deliver what its consumers want. According to David Kline, SVP at Viacom, “Consumers today want to access their favorite shows from any device at any location. Brightcove makes it easy for us to expand our second screen and TV Everywhere offerings.”

Mendels explained that the Viacom service will make it easier for consumers to choose more of the video content they want. As he said, “If a consumer is watching a two minute video of comedian, John Oliver, and she wants more, she can click on the video and it will seamlessly deliver another 30 minutes of Oliver’s routine.” And of course, Viacom can deliver more advertising on this 30 minute segment.

Before joining Brightcove Mendels spent 16 years at Macromedia and Adobe where one of his jobs was to do acquisitions . “One of the companies we acquired was Allaire [for $360 million] in 2002. Jeremy Allaire, its founder, became chief technology officer and was part of the team (based on Adobe’s acquisition of Macromedia) that added video to Flash. This turned out to be very popular because it meant that people no longer had to download a video player each time they wanted to view a video,” said Mendels.

Allaire left to found Brightcove. “Jeremy came to the conclusion that every company would be a video company. And in order to satisfy that need, he wanted to build a public place where companies could go to build their video libraries. Brightcove would be a complete video publishing system in the cloud — video as a service like Salesforce,” explained Mendels.

Brightcove focused on landing high-end clients. According to Mendels, “Our accounts included the New York Times, Le Figaro, and the UK’s Channel 5. And our channels included Home Depot, Oracle, Toyota, and Puma.”

And Mendels is promising profitability next quarter. “We will post $107 million in 2013 revenues — getting paid through annual subscription fees based on the number of video streams and some professional services, are growing at 24% year-over-year, are generating cash and will be profitable next quarter. But it’s early days — even though video on smart phones is growing in popularity, more people still watch TV.”

And Brightcove will win because of its ability to manage complexity. Mendels argues, “We are competing with companies doing what we do themselves and three or four others in the U.S. But we are the only one that operates globally and we deliver on many platforms and handle the complexity of many functions — such as playing videos on many platforms, security, digital rights, social sharing, advertising, close-captioning and analytics.”

ABI Research agrees with Mendels’ assessment. It used several factors — market share, geographies and pay-TV businesses served, support for live and VOD video, ability to integrate with existing systems, ability to serve all types of devices, and other features to meet changing consumer video behaviors — to conclude that Brightcove was the market leader “followed by Ooyala and Akamai.”

Until it achieves profitability, this is one that looks like it’s worth watching because it could boost its customers revenues and profits — but I am not yet sold on whether to invest until it demonstrates fast profit growth.

Nickelodeon May Launch The Nick App On XBox 360 Soon

The official website of the entertainment industry newspaper Variety, Variety.com, is reporting the exciting Nickelodeon News in the following article that, as part of the networks TV Everywhere initiative to help deliver Nickelodeon content to as many viewers as possible via their favorite devices, Nickelodeon may be planning to launch their recently debuted Nick App, a Nickelodeon branded experience currently available for the iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch iOS devices and computers running the Windows 8 operating system, on Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console in June 2013!

Nickelodeon also confirmed to NickALive! that they are working on releasing the Nick App worldwide soon!

The Nick App features a moveable tile layout that can be swiped in any direction, promoting discovery and exploration and offering kids instant and on-demand access to more than 1,000 pieces of Nickelodeon-themed content. It includes short-form videos of original skits, sketch and comedic bits; behind-the-scenes clips and photos from Nickelodeon stars and animated characters; as well as kid polls and newly created games. Nickelodeon will also launch a Nick Jr. preschool version of the app later this year:
Viacom, for its part, is expanding its TV Everywhere push to try to preserve its existing cable distribution deals. Nick, for example, has released apps that provide full-length episodes, plus games and other digital content, on iPad and iPhone and expects to launch a version for Microsoft Xbox 360 next month.

Nick Video App Hits iPhone, With Xbox Next

Kid cabler’s multiplatform push includes authenticated access to full episodes, games and other content

Viacom’s Nickelodeon has launched a free app for iPhones that provides access to full episodes for subscribers of participating pay TV partners — plus games and other interactive content — and is targeting a version for Microsoft’s Xbox in late June.

The kid cabler was the first Viacom brand to launch a TV Everywhere app, bowing one for Apple’s iPad tablet in February. Nick’s strategy is to reach youngsters on every screen, in an attempt to hold on to its core audience as mobile usage soars — and as over-the-top video alternatives for children’s programming like Netflix grow increasingly popular.

“With these apps, we’re basically trying to create a brand-new experience that begins to reimagine what a TV channel is for today’s digital kid,” said Steve Youngwood, executive VP and general manager of digital for Nickelodeon.

Nick started on the iPad “because it’s the most kid-designed device out there,” Youngwood said. To date, the Nick App for iPad has been downloaded 1.3 million times.

With the release Thursday of the app for iPhones and iPod Touches, the cabler expects to reach an even larger addressable audience. Its Xbox 360 app, slated to launch June 25, will be Nick’s first foray into connected TVs.

In the Internet-connected TV space, “the most relevant platform is Xbox,” Youngwood said. “There are a lot of kids spending time on the Xbox.”

Through the apps, Nick provides the five most recent episodes of current series — including “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Big Time Rush,” “The Fairly OddParents” and “Sam & Cat”— to households that subscribe to a TV service package with Nickelodeon from one of eight distributors: DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-verse, Verizon FiOS, Bright House Networks, Cablevision Systems, Hawaiian Telecom, Suddenlink and RCN. The biggest providers absent for now are Comcast and Dish Network.

But there’s a “very robust non-authenticated experience,” as well, according to Youngwood. For starters, the oldest of the five full episodes from each show is available for free to anyone. The apps also offer more than 2,000 pieces of original content, such as short-form videos, games and polls, with more added daily.

“We consider this a new, branded, immersive experience, with TV Everywhere in addition,” Youngwood said. “You don’t just take TV and move it over the left. We could have done that years ago.”

On the Xbox 360, Nick’s app will take advantage of the videogame console’s features like Bing search and the Xbox Kinect attachment for voice and gesture controls. Cabler has not determined plans for Xbox One, Microsoft’s next-generation overhaul of the console. “We’re working with them for what it means for current apps,” Youngwood said.

Nick is selling direct advertising for the apps, with sponsors that have included 20th Century Fox Studios (which promoted “The Croods” on the iPad version), Universal Studios, Marvel and Mattel. The full episodes carry the same ad load as those on TV — although those cannot be rolled into Nielsen TV ratings, for now — and Nick is placing ads against short-form video, too.

Early results on usage are encouraging, Youngwood said: On iPad, time spent with the app is more than 20 minutes per day per unique visitor — 25% higher than for Nick websites accessed on computers.

The Nick apps are free of charge, available anywhere in the U.S. Primarily they’re aimed at kids 6-11 but have crossover appeal to tweens, teens and adults.

Later this year, Nickelodeon plans to launch a Nick Jr. version of the app aimed at preschoolers.

To promote the new iPhone/iPod touch version, Nick is running spots on the linear network:

Nickelodeon USA Announces Plans To Premiere The Second Season Of "Figure It Out" From Monday 15th October 2012 At 7.00pm (ET/PT)

Below is a Nickelodeon Press Release from PRNewswire:
Nickelodeon Unveils Kids' Hidden Talents With The Return Of Figure It Out Season Two, Monday, October 15, At 7 p.m. (ET/PT)

Host Jeff Sutphen Challenges Superstars Cody Simpson, Tony Hawk, Rachel Crow, MettaWorld, Candace Parker, Noah Munck, Ariana Grande and More, to Figure Out Kids' Hidden Talents

NEW YORK, Oct. 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Nickelodeon's popular game show Figure it Out returns to the network with 30 all-new episodes of unique hidden talents, celebrity panelists and slime beginning Monday, October 15, at 7p.m. (ET/PT). Since its 2012 reboot, Figure it Out ranks as the top program in its time slot with tweens 9-14 across all TV and averaging 2.1 million total viewers. Season two will feature celebrity panelists Cody Simpson, Tony Hawk, Rachel Crow, Metta World, Candace Parker, Noah Munck and Ariana Grande as they try to guess the rare and secret talents of everyday kids. Hosted by Jeff Sutphen (BrainSurge), Figure it Out airs Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. (ET/PT).

"We're excited to bring Figure it Out back for a second season with more unique talents, hilarious moments and, of course, slime!" said Paula Kaplan, Executive Vice President, Current Series, Nickelodeon. "Kids love playing along with the show and seeing their favorite Nick stars and celebrities on a more personal level."

During summer encores, Figure it Out hosted a "Watch & Win" sweepstakes, encouraging viewers to tune-in nightly for the opportunity to secure a unique code. Once the code was revealed, show fanatics were challenged to log on to www.nick.com/figureitout for a chance to appear on an upcoming episode this season, alongside celebrity panelists. Four grand-prize finalists were selected for this all-expense paid trip of a lifetime.

Every Figure it Out episode features a panel of four stars trying to guess the talent or accomplishment of two kid contestants each, through three rounds of game play, by asking yes or no questions while being bombarded by messy visual and tactile clues. For every round the panel fails to figure it out, the contestant wins a prize. If, after three rounds, the panel can't figure out the kid's unique skill, the contestant takes home the grand prize. Each game culminates in the reveal of the talent with an in-studio demo.

The slime from the '90s version of Figure it Out returned to the network in June 2012. Each panelist has a chance to be slimed if they perform the "secret slime" action, which is revealed in round two of the game. Contestants also have the chance to be honored with a sliming, if the panelist is able to guess the pre-determined "word of honor," a word that is key to helping them figure out the contestants' special talent.

Each episode of Figure it Out will be available for streaming on Xbox, Vudu and Amazon.com, and download on iTunes.

Figure it Out originally aired for four seasons on Nickelodeon from July 1997 to December 1999 and was hosted by Olympic gold medalist swimmer Summer Sanders. Panelists from the original broadcast included Kenan Thompson, Aaron Carter, Amanda Bynes, Chris Jericho, Coolio, Jack Hanna, Sherman Helmsley, Evander Holyfield, Joe Namath, Julius Erving, Michelle Trachtenberg, Mike O'Malley and Mya, among several others. The series was created by Kevin Kay and Magda Liolis with Eileen Braun and Liolis currently serving as executive producers.

To kick-start the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Microsoft Corp. today unveiled a bold new vision for enjoying entertainment at home and on the go with Xbox SmartGlass. Launching this year, Xbox SmartGlass is an application for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and other portable devices that connects phones, PCs and tablets with your Xbox 360 console to make your entertainment smarter, more interactive and more fun.(1) The intelligence of Xbox SmartGlass makes your entertainment more engaging, Web surfing more effortless, and playing games more immersive by delivering companion content and control to enhance your TV experience.

Xbox 360 Gets Paramount Movies, Nickelodeon TV

Microsoft bows “SmartGlass” app connecting Xbox 360 with phones, PCs and tablets

Microsoft during the next 12 months will offer Xbox 360 owners direct access to Paramount catalog movies, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon TV programming in the United States, among other content.

Microsoft unveiled the content additions (among 35 new content partners globally) at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles.

The software giant made the announcement in conjunction with the launch of the Xbox Smartglass app, which allows users to listen to music, play video games and watch movies on a Windows 8-enabled portable media device (phone, laptop or tablet) and/or migrate the viewing to the TV in the home.

Paramount movies follow a strategic decision by corporate parent Viacom to mine incremental revenue from the studio’s catalog and select new releases globally across digital platforms.

The studio earlier this year rolled an ad-supported Paramount movie TV channel in Spain with plans to do the same in other countries going forward.

Other content holders added for Xbox Live members include: Absolute Radio — U.K.; Ameba TV — Canada, U.S.; BreakMedia — Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, Singapore, South Africa, U.K., U.S.; Comoyo — Denmark, Norway, Sweden; Corus Entertainment’s Franklin the Turtle — Canada; GameSpot TV — Australia, Canada, U.K., U.S.; Headweb — Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden; Indie Flix — U.S.; Machinima — All Xbox Live markets; Napster — Germany, U.K.; Picturebox — U.K.; Quickflix — Australia, New Zealand; Rakuten ShowTime — Japan; Revision3 — Canada, U.K., U.S.; Rhapsody — U.S.; RTL XL — Netherlands; Slacker Radio – Canada, U.S.; SnagFilms – U.S.; Terra (Sunday TV) – Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico; The AOL On Network — Australia, Canada, Netherlands, U.K., U.S.; The Weather Channel — U.S.; The Whistle — U.S.; TOU.TV — Canada; TV3 — Spain; Twitch TV — U.S.; Univision — U.S.; Wuaki — Spain; and Youzee — Spain.

“With Xbox SmartGlass, we are lighting up entertainment across your phone, tablet, PC and TV in a completely new way,” Don Mattrick, president of the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft, said in a statement.

E3 2012: Microsoft expands Xbox Live

Microsoft has revealed plans to expand its Xbox Live service through a range of extensive partnerships.

Chief marketing officer Yusuf Mehdi announced that the platform will introduce 35 entertainment providers to improve its sports, movies and foreign language offerings.

ESPN is on board to bring its programming to Xbox Live subscribers around the clock. More than 40 NFL games will air each week, and an NBA League Pass will offer more than 2,400 games for a fee.

Movies from Viacom's Paramount studio, shows from Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications Inc, and cartoons from Nickelodeon have also been added to the Xbox Live roster, as well as content from Machinima and Univision.

Microsoft has also improved the service's Kinect navigation via Bing Voice Search, which is being rolled out in numerous new territories. Users can now search for media by genre by uttering an audible command.

The company also announced that its Internet Explorer web browser is coming to the Xbox 360, and unveiled the SmartGlass as a means of integrating its content across tablets, smartphones and other connected devices.

Microsoft tries a reboot on the Xbox 360 as living room PC

With several announcements ranging from partnerships to new features, Microsoft eyes non-gamers

While it may have been the game trailers that drew cheers from the crowd at Microsoft's Xbox briefing in Los Angeles this week, the partnerships and new features that the company announced signal its intent to expand the console's role far beyond gaming.

"I absolutely think Microsoft is trying to build on its Xbox Live advantage and push more out from games," said IDC games analyst Lewis Ward. "Consoles are becoming like 'smart' set-top boxes but with a massive game delivery advantage."

Microsoft announced 35 content partners at E3 ranging from Nickelodeon for kids to Univision for Spanish speakers. The National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) will join Major League Baseball (MLB) in streaming games through the console. Sports fans will also be able to watch four different ESPN channels later this year.

To see some of the new features and content announced for Xbox, watch a video on YouTube.

Xbox will make content consumption different from traditional television viewing. For example, consumers could watch two basketball games simultaneously and using Kinect voice commands, switch between the two. With other voice commands, they could watch the games on full or split screens. Adding a social component to the games, fans can pick winners and share the picks with friends, which will appear in a carousel at the bottom of the screen.

Xbox SmartGlass is a new feature that will let users consume complementary content across multiple devices. For example, during the presentation Xbox Live vice president Marc Whitten demonstrated how a tablet could show additional information while watching the HBO series Game of Thrones. While watching the program on the big screen, the tablet showed a map of where the scene was taking place. In another demonstration, a gamer crafted a play on a tablet, then executed it on the television screen in Madden NFL.

SmartGlass will let users browse the Web using their smartphones as the controllers. Microsoft announced that Internet Explorer will come to Xbox, but didn't say whether other browsers would be supported. Nintendo and Sony have Web browsers, but navigating with a game controller and typing without a physical keyboard have made the browsers difficult to use.

"We'll see on the implementation of it, but I think the vision is interesting in that they can enable the Web browser hopefully in a more user-friendly way," said Ward. He thinks that Microsoft will debut its next-generation console at E3 next year.
"Partly what's going on with the SmartGlass announcement is that they're trying to pre-empt Wii U," said Ward, referring to Nintendo's next-generation console that will ship before the end of 2012.

Microsoft Add Football, Cartoons to Expand Xbox Platform

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) expanded the sports and entertainment content offered through the Xbox, adding shows like “Monday Night Football” to extend the life of its gaming console and step up competition with Sony Corp. (6758) and Nintendo Co.

The Xbox 360’s online service will gain 35 entertainment providers, Yusuf Mehdi, chief marketing officer for Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment division, said today at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles. Microsoft also introduced an application called Xbox SmartGlass that will link the console to phones, tablets and personal computers from Microsoft and rivals.

Microsoft is seeking to turn Xbox into a home-entertainment system that lets consumers share programs and information with all their devices, both competing with and connecting to gadgets from Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Google Inc. (GOOG) Microsoft doesn’t plan to unveil a new console until next year at the earliest, people familiar with the matter said in March, so SmartGlass and the added programming will help refresh the Xbox amid competition from Sony’s PlayStation 3 and a new Nintendo console.

“It’s a smart move,” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner Inc. “It positions Xbox as the center of a personal cloud ecosystem while allowing consumers to preserve the value in their current hardware.” Customers will probably be able to use the SmartGlass app on existing iPads and iPhones, for example, Gartenberg said, citing a briefing from Microsoft.

SmartGlass App

Microsoft, the world’s biggest software maker, will release SmartGlass this year, allowing content makers to create uses for the app. For example, HBO could use it to provide “Game of Thrones” information to a viewer’s tablet while he or she is watching, or Electronic Arts Inc. could let “Madden NFL” video-game players draw a new play for their running back on their phone and have the player execute it in the game, Mehdi said in an interview before the speech.

The app will also serve to provide additional uses for Windows Phones and Windows 8 tablets and PCs, scheduled to go on sale later this year.

The new content, games and programs serve to round out Microsoft’s vision of Xbox as entertainment hub, as Google and Apple try to market television products and Sony and Nintendo approach the market through their game consoles. Nintendo has already announced a new machine, the Wii U, set to go on sale later this year. Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said today that Xbox is now the best-selling video-game machine worldwide.

Console Market

Microsoft has made market-share gains in a slumping U.S. video-game and console market. The company racked up more than 40 percent of U.S. console sales for 14 months straight through April, according to market researcher NPD Group Inc.

In that month, U.S. sales of video-game hardware, software and accessories tumbled 32 percent as consumer buying shifts to downloads and games on social sites, said Port Washington, New York-based NPD.

“At a time when entertainment is becoming more interactive, more fun, we are bringing together games, movies and television shows on every screen in our lives,” said Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment division, in a speech at E3.

Microsoft rose less than 1 percent to $28.55 at the close in New York. The shares have gained 10 percent this year.

Viacom, Univision

New content for Xbox Live, which has 40 million subscribers, will include Paramount films and Nickelodeon cartoons from Viacom Inc. (VIAB), shows from Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications Inc., 24-hour ESPN programming and National Basketball Association games.

NBA League Pass will be available on Xbox Live for a fee, giving customers more than 2,400 games, Mehdi said. A National Hockey League subscription package offers more than 40 games a week, he said.

Nike Inc. (NKE) will release a fitness game that uses Xbox and its Kinect sensor to scan a customer’s body -- it can even tell if the user has had knee surgery -- and recommends a workout plan. The Kinect will then track whether the user is doing the exercises correctly.

Microsoft today also demonstrated “Halo 4,” the next installment in best-selling Xbox-only game franchise, which is due to be available this fall.

In addition, the company showed an Xbox Music service that is a revamped version of its Zune offering. The service will offer 30 million tracks that can be accessed on any Microsoft device. The company will also offer an Internet Explorer browser for Xbox.
