Nickelodeon Releases 'Dora the Explorer' Pilot Intro to Celebrate Beloved Preschool Property's 25th Anniversary

Today (Aug. 14) marks the 25th anniversary of the debut of Nickelodeon's beloved preschool property, Dora the Explorer, and to celebrate, Nickelodeon's official Dora Instagram page has released the intro and theme song to the unaired pilot episode of Dora the Explorer!

'Dora the Explorer' Pilot Logo

Although the pilot episode of Dora the Explorer features many of the same designs and aspects that would eventually go on and feature in the show, there are a few notable differences, including Boots, who has a completely different design: he doesn't wear his iconic red boots and has a mostly yellow fur, instead of the mainly grey body he has in the series. The theme song and intro, although similar, have a few minor differences, too. The pilot also features fan favorite characters such as Backpack, Map, and of course, Swiper!

The Dora the Explorer pilot would eventually get remade into the episode "Beaches."

The Other Side: Niki Lopez's New Nickelodeon Short Receives Nomination at LALIFF 2024

Welcome to The Other Side 🔮👻 The new short from Santiago of the Seas creator, Niki Lopez, is a finalist for Best US Animated Film Short at the 2024 Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF)!

The Other Side

The Other Side is a conjuring of my love for all things paranormal and the desire to celebrate the cradle of Latin-Caribbean mysticism that I grew up in. Within our community, there’s a deep-rooted appreciation for stories like these, but it’s rare to find ourselves reflected in them, even less so to have the chance to authentically shape them. This short aims to change that narrative.” - Niki Lopez 🐐

The short film comes from Nickelodeon's Intergalactic Shorts Program which aims to discover and showcase content from new voices and diverse creators.

Niki López Developing New Project Rooted In Caribbean Mysticism For Nickelodeon; Gives Update on 'Santiago of the Seas' Season 3

Niki López, the co-creator of Nickelodeon's hit CG-animated preschool series Santiago of the Seas, has revealed that she's currently working on a brand new project for Nickelodeon!

Niki López

Speaking to Peruvian publication Metro Puerto Rico, López revealed that the new concept is currently in its development stage, and will be about Caribbean mysticism. López also revealed that the project will be targeted towards older viewers instead of a preschool audience.

López also gave an update about Santiago of the Seas, revealing that a third season is still undergoing negotiations.

López, who was born in Hato Rey in Puerto Rico, spent much of her childhood in Bayamón, but part of her family resides in San Germán. On weekends, López traveled west to visit her relatives. On these “roadtrips” the young woman fed her imagination.

“Since I was little I always went on those journeys of the imagination but I always had these characters and these stories in my head. […] At that time we didn't have the distraction of a cell phone or an iPad, or anything like that. What I had as entertainment was my imagination and I went on those trips and, well, I drew it, because I had so many ideas that I wanted them to exist in some way,” she revealed.

Likewise, she assured that these imaginative trips have been the constant in her life; her passion for illustrating stories prevails.

López went on to explain that Santiago of the Seas was born because the Puerto Rican illustrator longed for the Caribbean soil.

"was like a letter of homesickness and affection for the island; my childhood and where I found that magic of being here. The nature, the beaches, walking the streets of Old San Juan." he said.

The show tells the stories of a pirate who wants to save his island "Encanto" and his home helps him do it with a little magic. Inspired by Cofresí and a magical world, Santiago of the Seas has so far ran for two seasons.

The show has been successful, and the impact it has had on children in the diaspora is extremely meaningful to López. Families tell her how the series has motivated their children to learn about their culture.

"One of them told me that their kids didn't want to speak Spanish, they weren't interested at all. They tried and tried; they put on Santiago and, well, you have a protagonist who is speaking Spanish sometimes and lives in Isla Encanto, he has a coqui in his hat. Suddenly, the kids are interested because they're seeing a version of their culture and their language, with someone who is a hero. They identify with that: 'Oh, can I be a hero, too?."

Paramount+ UK Adds Unaired 'Kenan & Kel' Pilot Episode

Last October, Paramount+ added all four seasons of Nickelodeon's iconic sitcom Kenan & Kel, starring All That and Good Burger stars Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live) and Kel Mitchell (Game Shakers) to the streaming service in the UK and Ireland.

As an extra special bonus, Paramount+ has also included the never-aired-in-the-UK PILOT episode of Kenan & Kel! When Kenan & Kel originally aired in the U.K., Nickelodeon only aired the series from "The Tainting of the Screw," which served as the introduction to Kenan and Kel, to the series finale movie "Two Heads Are Better Than None."

And even if you haven't watched Kenan & Kel since the '90s, the pilot episode is a must watch!

In the pilot episode, Kenan is trying to raise money to buy a car, and is offered one for just $400. After learning they have in fact bought a stolen car, Kenan and Kel co-operate with the police in bringing the car thief to justice in return for being let off the hook.

Although the Pilot episode is very much like the rest of the series, with the core cast still playing their respective roles and sets mostly the same, as well as the iconic theme song sung by the late, great Coolio being intact, there are a few notable differences: the episode isn't as polished as other episodes, and seems a bit choppy at times, and in one scene, a camera can be spotted as another pans round, although this may be because this episode was made for 4x3 TV screens and watching it on a 16x9 device has made the edges which are usually hidden visible. The end credits are also shorter, with the addition of the vanity card of show creator Kim Bass, Bass Entertainment.

Camera in shot, to the right.

Another noticeable change in the pilot is that Kel seems a bit smarter than he does in the series, and he doesn't seem to love Orange Soda as much. He can be seen drinking a bottle of it at Rigby's, but there's no "who loves orange soda?" lead up.

Unfortunately, there is still one remaining unaired Kenan & Kel episode missing. Due to its content, the episode "Girl-Watchers" was completely banned in the U.K.

What are you waiting for? Watch the never-seen-before-in-the-UK pilot episode of Kenan & Kel on Paramount+! Try it FREE at ParamountPlus.com. "Aw, here it goes!"

The pilot featured Jennifer Badger, Jim Brewsky, Matt Brown, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodi Carlisle, Devin Clark, Maria Glenon, Jay Martel, Brian Edward O'Connor (as Brian O'Connor), and Christian Tessier.

Real Mature was produced by Eileen Braun, Geoffrey Darby, Roseanne Lopopolo and future Nickelodeon President Herb Scannell, who between them worked on many Nickelodeon shows, including: Clarissa Explains It All, Welcome Freshmen, The Weinerville Chanukah Special, The Weinerville New Year's Special: Lost in the Big Apple, Make the Grade, Double Dare, Nick Rocks Video House Party, Rated K: For Kids by Kids, You Can't Do That on Television, Rich Hall's TV Dinner Party, Finders Keepers, The Tomorrow People, What Would You Do?, Get the Picture, Hi Honey, I'm Home, and Mystery Magical Special.

It's the raw copy, so the commercial breaks are included. you will have to fast forward through them.  My apologies."

Keith Chapman Shares Early 'PAW Patrol' Concept Art

PAW Patrol is celebrating its 10th anniversary on-air this year. The CG-animated preschool series became an instant hit, with millions of fans across the world tuning into the adventures of the pack of heroic rescue pups, who are led by a tech-savvy boy named Ryder, as they save the citizens of Adventure Bay, and Chase, Marshall, Rubble, Skye, Rocky, Zuma, Everest and Tracker becoming firm-favorites with fans.

While the pups have become instantly recognizable, there was a time when the PAW Patrol looked quite different! To celebrate the recent launch of Rubble & Crew, the first spin-off from the long-running show, Keith Chapman, the renowned creator of a raft of hit children's series, including PAW Patrol, shared early concept art for the cast of PAW Patrol, when the project was named Robbie’s Rescue Dogs!

Original concept drawing from Keith Chapman for ‘Robbie’s Rescue Dogs’ which evolved into PAW Patrol. Courtesy of Keith Chapman

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the visual style of PAW Patrol, Chapman said: "I remember when we kicked off with this, I did a few little doodles really to sell the idea to Spin Master. We went down that route. There was a studio that put together the original trailer — animation test — which we showed and pitch to Nick Jr. It was when you got the toys out on the table, but that was a different look, more rounded heads and slightly different look. I think the lucky break for us when we managed to get the green light from Nickelodeon. [Jen Dodge, Spin Master’s executive vp entertainment] and Tim went out and found, right on their doorstep, Guru Studios, who just did the most amazing designs. It was almost like a bit of a throwback to old Disney artists, the way they captured the pups and the personalities in this brilliant style. They look so adorable with the proportions of the eyes and the bodies. It worked — including the vehicle designs. The coloring was beautiful. A lot of CG shows actually don’t look that good because the coloring is not that good or the styling is not that good. But Guru just got it together. It was perfect.

Dodge added: "We looked at a lot of different design styles, and we could have gone quite cartoony, but what we felt was important was that the dogs looked like real dogs. That they looked like their breed and that they had a realism to them because wanting a puppy is such a universal thing for children. They couldn’t be so cartoony that you couldn’t feel like that’s the pup that you have at home or that’s down the street. It had to fit into the human world in a really realistic way. Another thing was that because they were puppies, they couldn’t look like adult dogs. So the paws are a little bit bigger, Marshall’s clumsy because of it. They move like dogs. Rubble’s gait as a bulldog is very different than Chase’s gait as a German shepherd, or Skye’s as a cockapoo. When we looked at them all in black and white silhouette, they all had to have unique silhouettes that were distinguishable from one another, but also identifiable to their breed."

PAW Patrol fans can stream full episodes of PAW Patrol, PAW Patrol: The Movie and PAW Patrol Live! At Home featuring "Race to the Rescue" on Paramount+. Try it FREE today at ParamountPlus.com.

Stoopid Buddy Stoodios Reportedly Developing New Series for Nickelodeon

Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, an artist-friendly collective that houses some of the finest talent in animation and entertainment, is reportedly developing a series for Nickelodeon!

In the boilerplate of a recent press release, the studio (formerly known as Stoopid Monkey), best known for the longest running stop-motion show on TV, the multi-Emmy® Award-winning Robot Chicken on Adult Swim, mentions some of their upcoming projects, which includes "Justin Roiland’s Gloop World, Dominion X with Steve Aoki, a web3 documentary featuring NOUNS, and series in development with Nickelodeon, HBO Max, Adult Swim, Disney, and Hulu."

The new Nickelodeon show Stoopid Buddy Stoodios is currently working on is currently under wraps, however, the studio has previously partnered with Nickelodeon on a couple of projects, including Super Macho Fighter from Jorge R. Gutierrez, the co-creator of Nickelodeon’s Emmy-winning show El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. The proposed show, described as a "a mat-slamming new stop-motion series for Nickelodeon" that "extends [Gutierrez's] love affair with Mexico’s pop/folk culture" was announced as being in development in 2013, with Gutierrez revealing "Super Macho Fighter! Currently in development at my beloved Nickelodeon...," and a proof of concept (below) was produced in 2016, however, it seems like Nickelodeon has passed on the series.

"For this proof of concept we put together for Nickelodeon, alongside legendary animator Jorge Gutierrez, we made sure you felt every bone-breaking punch and soul-sucking slam between wrestling villain Lord Rasputin and heroic foil, Boom Boom Savage. A stop-motion production with the vibes of an early 2000s Nickelodeon program, this heart-pounding match will leave you on the edge of your seat" noted Stoopid Buddy Stoodios.

The studio also produced a stop-motion music video titled "Fruit Song" for Nick Jr.'s Yo Gabba Gabba!.

'Sabrina' Star Jenna Leigh Green Once Filmed A Pilot For Nickelodeon

Jenna Leigh Green, who portrayed Libby Chessler on the hit comedy series Sabrina the Teenage Witch, has revealed that she filmed a pilot for Nickelodeon in the '90s before landing the part of Sabrina's arch-enemy!

In a recent episode of Melissa Joan Hart's What Women Binge podcast, Green revealed to the Clarissa Explains It All alum that she played the lead character Shelby Wink in the pilot episode of The Mystery Files of Shelby Wink.

Ultimately, that show didn't get picked up, however, if the name of the show sounds familiar, that's because it is!

Whilst The Mystery Files of Shelby Wink didn't get ordered to series, it got reworked to what eventually became Nickelodeon's The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo! The mystery series starred Irene Ng and Pat Morita and revolved around the adventures of a Chinese American teenage girl who lives with her innkeeper grandfather and works as a non-sworn intern at the local police department where she helps out with odds and ends around the office.

The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo would go on to run for 41 episodes over four seasons, airing between 1996 and 1999, with the majority of episodes filmed at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Interestingly, Green admitted that if the show did get greenlit, she wouldn't have been available to Sabrina the Teenage Witch, thus missing out on the iconic role!

During the interview, Hart also revealed that Sabrina the Teenage Witch, was picked up straight-to-series without a test pilot being filmed!

Check out the conversation below!:

Sabrina & Libby Reunion: Jenna Leigh Green and Melissa Share Sabrina Memories | Melissa Joan Hart

Melissa Joan Hart’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch co-star joins us this episode. Jenna Leigh Green played Libby - Sabrina’s arch nemesis!   Is she as mean as her character? SPOILER ALERT: She’s amazing!

Jenna gives us the details about her broadway, including stories from Wicked.  She also reveals the Nickelodeon show she was the original lead for!

To top it off, she shares some great pointers about her top binges of the year.

It’s always a blast having Sabrina the Teenage Witch reunions.

Nickelodeon Films Pilot For 'New to This Planet'

Nickelodeon filmed a pilot for a potential brand new show called New to This Planet late last year, it has been revealed!

Not much is currently known about the half-hour pilot, but according to IMDb, the cast of the pilot episode featured Jack Stanton (Outmatched) as Zogan, Che Tafari (The Good Fight, The Good Place) as Brax, Alana Gay (Law and Order: Sting Unit) as Kayla (series regular), Cora Craver (The Creators) as Iris, Krizia Bajos (The Casagrandes, Danger Force) as Heather, Jim Titus (Danger Force) as regular Rob (series regular), and Irene White (Superstore) as the Spaceship's VO.

The pilot was executive produced by Paul Mather (Alone Together) and directed by Leonard R. Garner Jr. (The Thundermans, The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, Danger Force, Warped!, Side Hustle) and produced by Uptown Productions (Henry Danger, The Haunted Hathaways). Jeff Wright (Warped!) served as an editor on the pilot, with Tyler Mar (All That, The Really Loud House) serving as a Script Coordinator.

The half-hour pilot was produced between November 2021 - February 2022. It's currently unknown whether the show was picked up to series.

Interestingly, the pilot's IMDb listing, New to This Planet is a "TV Movie", which may suggest that Nickelodeon has reworked the pilot, similar to California Dreaming.
