Channel 5′s Milkshake! Stirs Up New Shows and Reorders

The Brit preschool block is adding flavor to its content lineup with a live-action cooking series, a stop-motion animated comedy and a preschool spinoff.

MCC Media culinary show Cooking With the Gills

UK broadcaster Channel 5 is adding some new flavors to its Milkshake! preschool block, mixing new commissions and acquisitions in with a handful of series renewals.

The first greenlight is for stop-motion animated comedy Tweedy & Fluff (40 x five minutes), whose big-hearted yarn-made main characters met on the workshop floor of a tweed mill. They quickly become inseparable bond, learning how to communicate without using speech and manage their anxieties in stressful situations. The series explores love, nurture and friendship through visual comedy.

Created by children’s author Corinne Averiss (A Dot in the Snow), the show will be directed by Chris Randall (My Motorbike) and co-produced by UK-based Second Home Studios and Averiss’s Stitchy Feet entertainment company, with support from the UK Government’s Young Audiences Content Fund.

French CGI animated series Oggy Oggy

Channel 5 is also adding a little spice to Milkshake!’s slate with a commission for live-action series Cooking With The Gills (25 x 11 minutes) from British production company MCC Media.

The project features JB Gill, a farmer and former member of boyband JLS, who takes his family all over the UK asking talented young cooks to help him prepare and cook delicious recipes from around the world. After learning the origins of the dish and the value of its ingredients, Gill and his family head to their rural pop-up kitchen and serve meals to their friends and other local families.

Lastly, the broadcaster has acquired CG-animated series Oggy Oggy (156 x seven minutes) from Paris-based prodco Xilam Animation. This preschool spinoff of long-running 2D-animated comedy series Oggy and the Cockroaches, which debuted in France in 1998, follows along as young kitten Oggy adventures with his cat pals in a bright and colorful world where everything is made out of toys.

Tweedy & Fluff

These three new titles will join returning shows including Boom Kids’ live-action adventure series Meet the Experts (season 2, 20 x 11 minutes); 2D-animated preschool series Daisy & Ollie (season five, 26 x seven minutes), produced by UK-based Hoopla Studio; CG-animated comedy Pip & Posy (season two, 52 x seven minutes), a UK co-pro from Sky Kids and Magic Light Pictures; and WildBrain’s CG-animated Fireman Sam (season 13, 26 x 11 minutes).

Louise Bucknole, Paramount’s General Manager (GM) for kids and family in the UK and Ireland, recently noted at The Children’s Media Conference (CMC) in Sheffield that Milkshake! is currently commissioning for 2024 onwards and said she is particularly interested in live-action series that could be factual or about STEM learning. The exec is also on the lookout for slapstick and comedy formats, messy play and shows about play patterns, in addition to coproductions.

For Nick Jr, which is also under Bucknole’s remit at Paramount, the exec is after character-driven storytelling with franchise potential, that could be based on a book.

Additionally, Bucknole called out for content aimed at the 6-12 audience for Sunflower TV, a YouTube channel launched last month by a host of organisations including Channel 5, for Ukrainian refugees.

Nickelodeon Asia Launches All-New On-Air Brand Refresh With "Biggest Day Ever"

Nickelodeon South East Asia today, Monday 17th July 2017 (17.7.17) launched Nickelodeon's large-scale brand refresh, featuring a design that fully reflects the role of play and imagination in kids lives, and a array of kids interacting with the real world and Nick’s beloved characters in surprising and surreal mixes of live-action and graphics!

Nickelodeon's new image demonstrates the role of imagination, creativity and play in the lives of children, combining real kids with 2D and 3D graphics to create imaginative reinterpretations of Nickelodeon’s properties and characters as they became real-world playgrounds for kids to bring to life, rearrange and redesign. From turning SpongeBob’s face into a tongue-twisted fun zone, to kids rearranging and rebuilding Lincoln Loud from The Loud House, everything from the overhead and docu-style camera angles to the seamless blend of real-world, tactile and fantastical elements, is designed to drive a visual conversation between the network and its audience. The result is an unusual and often surreal mixture of photo and graphics that kids are sure to love.

Nickelodeon's new look consists of almost 300 elements, including bumpers, IDs, fillers, visual effects, graphic developments, and an extensive graphic package for creating promotional videos. Many of the elements are being adapted for local audiences.

Created with global branding and creative agency Superestudio, based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nickelodeon's latest brand refresh reflects the fact that the channel has become a integral part in the life's of modern children, opening up new opportunities for them to play, create and communicate. Nickelodeon’s classic orange logo will now be set against an updated color palette of bright and cheerful tones, including purple, light blue, lime and cream. Embracing the bold, modern sans-serif type, Galano Grotesque Black, the refresh also uses color to create, contrast and codify the on-air messaging.

Nickelodeon South East Asia kicked off the channels new look with the "BIGGEST DAY EVER", featuring the launch of SpongeBob SquarePants' Lost Treasures programming stunt, the premiere of Nickelodeon's Sizzling Summer Camp Special, and brand-new episodes from The Fairly OddParents, Oggy and the Cockroaches & ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks. Additionally, to celebrate the launch, Nickelodeon South East Asia will be unveiling special Nickelodeon wallpapers inspired by the channels new design which fans can download on Nick Asia's official Facebook page, facebook.com/NickAsia!:

Nickelodeon India Announces 2016-2017 Highlights

MUMBAI: Nina Elavia Jaipuria, EVP & Business Head, Kids Cluster, Viacom18, is elated that Nickelodeon India has held on its numero uno position for the third year in a row under two different audience measurement systems, TAM and BARC!

Nina Jaipuria, head of kids cluster, Viacom18

Jaipuria is also satisfied with the growth of Sonic, which has been given booster shots in the form of getting to air Nick's popular franchises like Shiva, Oggy & the Cockroaches and Pakdam Pakdai.

“Nick’s market share is 22% and the next channel is 17%. Hence, there is a large gap between us and our nearest competitor. Sonic’s share has jumped to 7% on average from 3–4% due to Shiva. Together, Nick and Sonic have almost 30% share,” Jaipuria told TelevisionPost.com.

The total ad market for the kids genre is Rs 500 crore (Rs 5 billion) and is growing at 10–11%. Of this, Nick and Sonic take away more than 30% of the ad revenue, avers Jaipuria.

Shiva

“Nick has seen 25–30% growth in its ad rate. Since we are a 100% utilised channel, all growth has to come from effective rates (ER). Sonic’s ad rates have grown by 50%,” she stated.

Jaipuria attributes the success of Nick and Sonic to the creation of a portfolio of characters rather than depending on one character. “We have Shiva, Ninja, Oggy, Pakdam Pakdai, and Motu Patlu. Each of them has worked in a peculiar way for us,” she said.

Kids Choice Awards is back and bigger than ever

After TV, digital and licensing & merchandising (L&M), Viacom18’s kids franchise Nick is all set to engage its core target audience with the second edition of Kids Choice Awards (KCA) 2016. The awards property, which had made its debut in 2014, will be bigger in its second edition.

The property opens up a new revenue stream for Nick, which currently gets 90% of its revenue from ad sales and subscription with L&M making up the remaining 10%.

“This property provides a new touch point to a lot of sponsors who are looking beyond 30-second spot engagement. This is a novel way of breaking the clutter. It’s a win-win situation for all as kids get a customised property, advertisers get an advertising touch point, and broadcasters get a property to engage their core audience,” explains Jaipuria.

For Jaipuria, the time is ripe to bring back KCA at a bigger scale. She feels that kids are under-served as far as live event properties are concerned. Unlike other film awards properties, which are oriented towards adults, KCA has been tailormade for kids.

In Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards India, kids could vote for best actor, actress, film and kids character. There are 13 such categories for which kids have voted. The voting ended on Monday 28th November 2016.

The event will take place on Monday 5th December 2016 at Reliance Studios (Film City), Mumbai. It will have 500 guests, primarily kids, on invite-only basis drawn from NGOs and schools.

In this edition, the property will have a wider reach through airing on multiple Viacom18 channels. The event will premiere on TV during Christmas vacation on Viacom18’s kids cluster Nickelodeon, Sonic, Nick Jr. and Nick HD+. It will then air on other network channels including Colors, Rishtey, Colors Bangla, Colors Marathi, Colors Gujarati besides the over-the-top (OTT) offering Voot.

“We did KCA for the first time in 2014, but that time it was on a smaller scale because the Nick franchise itself was not so robust. Today, the platform is very healthy and robust with multiple characters. We will leverage the equity that we have in the network. Moreover, it is a property that is very family-inclusive; therefore, it makes sense to air it on other network channels,” Jaipuria said.

The property has four main sponsors including Dabur Red Paste as the presenting sponsor, Lifebuoy and Choki Choki as co-powered by sponsors, and Funskool as the associate sponsor.

The property will have all the pomp and show with Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Akshat and Raghav Juyal, Mouni Roy and the Dramebaaz kids performing before the audiences. The event will be anchored by the popular duo Manish Paul and Rithvik Dhanjani.

Nick is mounting an extensive marketing plan for the property spanning TV, print, radio and activations. In addition to a high-frequency promo plan across the Nick cluster, the property will be promoted through Dish TV.

Ground activations have been planned in malls across Mumbai and Delhi besides van promotions across 30 cities in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The property will also be promoted on multiple screens in McDonald’s across 150 outlets in the North.

“We are going to burn 3,000 promos from the time the voting started until the tune-in,” Jaipuria said, summing up the marketing plan.

Launch of a brand-new local IP

Nick is gearing up to launch another local intellectual property in partnership with Toonz Animation. The new animation show will debut either in Q4 or Q1 of the next fiscal year.

“We will be launching our new local IP very soon. It makes sense to create more IPs because then we can leverage that IP across platforms like broadcast, digital, and L&M in our network,” Jaipuria said.

Nick, she said, is looking at different angles of revenue streams. One is of course doing an on-ground event, but a bigger opportunity for the brand is L&M.

“Our L&M is growing at 50% CAGR. Brands have partnered us to launch co-branded products across segments like apparel, accessory, footwear, home and back to school,” she added.

Talking of on-ground events, school contact programmes have emerged as another avenue for Nick to engage with kids and advertisers. Another growing revenue stream is the digital product Voot Kids.

As part of its strategy to leverage a character across multiple touch points, the network will launch pre-school Peppa Pig on Nick Jr. and Voot Kids. The character will also be extended to consumer products.

Besides launching a new local animation property, Nick, which commissions 150 episodes every year, is launching fresh episodes of Shiva, Motu Patlu, Pakdam Pakdai and Ninja Hattori.

Jaipuria believes in churning out a new IP every year as this helps in keeping the freshness alive on the channel. It also helps in beating the fatigue for existing shows.

Xilam Eyes Asian Expansion Of "Oggy And The Cockroaches" With Licensing Agent For India

French animation studio Xilam has appointed Dream Theatre to represent its flagship global children's brand Oggy and the Cockroaches in India.

Under a two-year agreement, the agency will represent Oggy across all consumer products categories and brand promotion.

The non-dialog series is currently one of India's leading children's TV performs, airing on both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, and the show's fifth season is expected to premiere on Cartoon Network Asia in Fall 2017. The property's first consumer products are also slated to hit shelves in Autumn next year.

New episodes will see Oggy and the roaches travelling back in time and to the future as they continue their seasons-long battle. Seasons six and seven will premiere in 2018.

Oggy and the Cockroaches targets kids aged six to 11 years old, and since the series features slapstick comedy with no dialog, it has seen success in a number of territories, including France, Italy and South Asia.

The Oggy brand is now distributed in more than 160 countries world wide and is watched in 600 million homes and boasts an internet audience of three billion total videos viewed on YouTube, as well as three million fans on Facebook.

Dream Theatre's appointment was made as Xilam expands its consumer products program for the brand, following Marie-Laure Marchand's appointment as Senior Vice President (SVP) of Global Consumer Products for the company earlier this year.

In a statement about the partnership, Marchand said: "We are delighted to have secured this partnership agreement with Dream Theatre; we know its experienced licensing team will capture the essence of Oggy and the key characters in a range of products that will engage the fans of today as well as tomorrow.

"Asia is a key growth market for our business and it was important we appointed who shared our vision and passion for the brand."

Nickelodeon To Launch India's First HD Kids TV Channel; Announces Brand-New Show "Shiva"

Viacom 18's kids cluster is gearing up for some game changing moves! In a first for the Indian market, Nickelodeon India will launch Nick HD+, which will showcase the best of local and international content!

Launching soon, Nick HD+ will be available on all cable and direct to home (DTH) platforms in the country. Nick HD+ content will be curated from the best of Nick's offerings across the board, including special 'never seen before' episodes of "Dora The Explorer" and "SpongeBob SquarePants". Some of the network's international shows such as "Marvin Marvin" will also be introduced to India through Nick HD+.

Additionally, after tasting success with its two localised shows, "Motu Patlu" and "Pakdam Pakdai", Viacom18's kids cluster Nickelodeon India will be launching its third localised series titled "Shiva". Slated to launch on Nickelodeon during Diwali this year on either the afternoon or evening prime time slot, "Shiva" is expected to give competition to Pogo's popular Indian animated series "Chhota Bheem".

Nina Elavia Jaipuria, EVP & BusinessHead - Kids Cluster, Viacom18 said, "Characters are very important in this genre. Its not the channel that the kids relate to, but the character. We have seen immense success with characters like Motu and Patlu and Ninja Hatori. This time, we developed the entire concept and script in-house because we want to own the character completely. This way we can do much more with Shiva in the coming months beyond television."

Created by Maya Digital Studios under Suhas Kadav's direction, "Shiva" comes as an answer to the channel's requirement for a home grown show that caters fun and action to their young viewers.

"As per last year's Oremax Small Wonder study from a sample of 1800 kids between the age of six to 14 years, we were missing one of the key drivers that led viewership and kids engagement, among all of our shows. We needed a high octane action comedy series that completed our portfolio and Shiva is just what we needed," Jaipuria points out.

Unlike Nickelodeon's other shows, which range from 15-20 minutes, each episode of "Shiva" will be 22 minutes long.

Aimed at kids between the ages of 8-to11, "Shiva" tells the story of the nine-year-old brave, fearless and intelligent boy who stays in Vedas city with his maternal grandparents. Every story in the show starts with an incident that threatens Vedas City. A true hero, Shiva, a super-kid with extraordinary talent, intellect and ability, along with his gang of friends sets out to save the day with the help some cool gadgets like the super bike developed by him.

The company carried out over a year of careful research to identify seven drivers that affected viewership and content consumption. While there are the obvious ones fun, action, fantasy and values, there are others which are more subtle like character traits, looks and intellect/resourcefulness. "Shiva", an action-comedy property, satisfies drivers like fun, action, intellect and fantasy, all in one go.

Developed after over a year of planning, and conceptualising, Shiva is being touted as one of the expensive projects by the channel. "Any animated series episode costs four times than that of a live action series," shares Jaipuria.

While an episode of a show like "Chhota Bheem" costs anywhere between Rs 26 - 27 lakh, Jaipuria pegs the cost of Shiva's episode anything above Rs 20 lakh.

With high hopes riding on the new show, Nickelodeon will be leaving no stones unturned to promote the show through a 360 degree marketing campaign, making the most of the approaching festive season.

To start with, the channel has put out teaser promos of the show through their home network channels. As the festive season nears, Nickelodeon will expand marketing and promotion measures through retail, van activities, OOH, digital and more.

"We plan to go below the line to put out the word through channels in other networks like a Sab TV or a Zee Cinema, which we know gets traction from kids. We will also be looking at utilising some of the movie releases, which are targeted at kids, thereby creating awareness in theatres. For the festive season of Dussehra and Deepavali everyone is out at the malls, so we will be undertaking a lot of on-ground mall activities happening through partnerships. We will also use radio as a reminder medium," she lists out, adding that the channel will also use social media and the digital platform to spread the word around on their new offering.

Nickelodeon India has also devised a strong growth plan for its sister kids channel, Sonic, which is all set to up the entertainment quotient for kids this season. Further fortifying the high decibel Sonic line-up, the hit animated series "Oggy & The Cockroaches" will now shift from Nick to Sonic. With shows like "Oggy" and "Pakdam Pakdai", Sonic is being pitched as the ultimate comic-chase destination.

Although admitting that moving a successful show like "Oggy & The Cockroaches" from Nick to Sonic is risky, Jaipuria is hopeful that the show will help strengthen Sonic's line up. Shedding more light on the reason behind this move, Jaipuria explains, "It is a combination of a couple of drivers that seem to be working for each character under Nick's banner, whether it's "Dora", "Oggy" or "Motu Patlu". We realised that if we focus on only action in Sonic, we will only cater to a very small section of audience. Therefore this move is also about expanding Sonic's reach by adding a flavour of comedy with "Oggy & The Cockroaches"."

She added that the channel's reach has gone up after a similar move they made earlier with "Pakdam Pakdai".

The network will try to drive traction to Sonic through Nickelodeon by urging loyal fans of "Oggy & The Cockroaches" to follow it's move to Sonic. This will be followed by a full fledged promotion activity for Sonic through the month of October 2015.

When asked to comment on these new developments on the network's kid cluster section, Jaipuria said, "Nickelodeon has always stayed ahead of the curve with its innovative and engaging initiatives. Keeping kids at the core of everything that we do, endearing characters, path breaking content and pioneering initiatives have scripted Nickelodeon's leadership and success story. The launch of "Shiva" and Nick HD+ are significant milestones in the category and are sure to be game changers, further fortifying our leadership position."

"Oggy and the Cockroaches" is a French animated series which centres on Oggy, a content, blue cat, who would prefer to spend his days watching television and eating - if not for the three roaches in his household: Joey, Dee Dee and Marky (named after members of the punk group Ramones). The trio seems to enjoy making Oggy's life miserable, which involves mischief ranging from (in most cases) plundering his refrigerator to such awkward things like hijacking the train Oggy just boarded. Oggy usually finds creatures accompanying him to the end of the episode, such as crabs, clams, a horse, a very technologically advanced child, a puppy, and an octopus. However, it's not always Oggy who wins... According to executive producer Marc du Pontavice and France Info, the character of Oggy was named after punk rock musician Iggy Pop and the rock album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars". The series is produced by Xilam and Gaumont Film Company.

Nickelodeon channels across Northern Europe has also recently started to show "Oggy and the Cockroaches" as their Autumn/Winter 2014 programming highlights!
