SpongeBob Boldly Joins the ‘Star Trek’ Crew in New Paramount+ Promo

These are the voyages of the Patrick Star Enterprise

Nautical nonsense reaches the Final Frontier in “Patrick Starship Enterprise,” a new promotional short from Paramount+ celebrating two iconic franchises: Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and CBS Television Studios’ Star Trek.

In the new ad, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), commands the "Patrick Starship Enterprise," a gigantic starship resembling everyone's favorite starfish, complete with the unmistakable voice of Bill Fagerbakke.

Spock (Ethan Peck) and Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence) survey the stars, while Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown) man the controls...which also double as a grill for Krabby Patties. Finally, the man (or sponge) of the hour arrives, as Tom Kenny's SpongeBob (or, as Spock greets him, "SpongeRobert") beams aboard, clad in a square Starfleet uniform. Soon, the whole thing is revealed to be the result of Uhura having a very strange dream...or, perhaps, of using her "imagination," as a double-live-long-and-prosper-handed Spock generates a SpongeBob-style rainbow.  The action is punctuated by Patrickisms as alerts from the ship (Bill Fagerbakke), and plenty of crossover references.

The crossover was exciting for both SpongeBob and Star Trek crews. Says Tom Kenny:

Speaking as a lifelong Trekker (OG TOS, baby! I was a nerd before nerds were cool!). It was a huge thrill to have my porous alter ego SpongeBob SquarePants “beam up” to the USS Enterprise for a dreamy visit! Interacting with the “stellar” (yes, pun intended!) cast of Strange New Worlds was an honor and a pleasure. They made SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs and Sandy feel welcome, which is a good thing because Star Trek is such a HUUUUUGE deal to me, I was really sweating it! Live Long and Perspire!

Meanwhile, longtime SpongeBob fan Celia Rose Gooding was thrilled to interact with the residents of Bikini Bottom, even if they had some serious questions about the crossover. "I grew up on SpongeBob, so I feel like I’ve been training for this my whole life. I’ve committed a lot of the Krusty Krab training video to memory, but how prepared can you be for a blended fever dream of your past and present? In this case, it’s SpongeBob and Star Trek. Wild, to say the least. I’ll be crossing some things off my bucket list, but I have so many questions. Can the food replicator make Krabby Patties? Does Spock play mayonnaise in this universe? Where is Gary? Have it out on your preferred platform. I’m ready! I’m ready!"

What 'Star Trek' and 'SpongeBob' Series Are Available on Paramount+?

Paramount+ houses every classic Star Trek series, including Kenny's beloved original series, The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. It is also the home port for the streamer's fleet of new streaming-original Star Trek series, including Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks. It will also be the home for the upcoming Starfleet Academy series, which spins off from Discovery. All 315 (and counting) episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants are available on the streamer; the series is currently in the midst of its fifteenth season. Two spinoff series, the prequel Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, and the Patrick Star solo showcase The Patrick Star Show, in which the titular starfish hosts a talk show, are also available. While Star Trek's new big-screen outing has been subject to innumerable delays, SpongeBob SquarePants is set to hit theaters again later this year. The fourth theatrical SpongeBob movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants (amusingly, a takeoff on the title of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock), will premiere on December 19, 2025, and will pit SpongeBob and his pals against the Flying Dutchman; he'll be voiced by Mark Hamill, a stalwart of some other science fiction franchise.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' third season will premiere on Paramount+ this summer, with a pre-release event set for the Tribeca Festival in June.

“Find Your Mountain on Paramount+” is the latest chapter of Paramount+’s award-winning Mountain of Entertainment™ brand campaign, and the new ad is the third in a series of star-studded live-action brand spots featuring unexpected mashups that showcase the personalized content experience on Paramount+. Previous promos have featured mash-ups of Yellowjackets x Survivor and Mean Girls x Gladiator.
