Former Nickelodeon VP Alexi Wheeler Talks Animation in Africa

Children's television executive Alexi Wheeler recently left his post at Nickelodeon, where he served as Vice President (VP), Animation Production & Developer for Nickelodeon International for a new position on Netflix Kids' kids and family international originals team. Before Alexi left Nickelodeon, he gave a fantastic interview with Screen Africa about the South African and African animation industry, which you can check out below!:

Nickelodeon’s Alexi Wheeler talks animation in Africa

SCREEN AFRICA EXCLUSIVE: The South African and African animation industry as a whole has been booming in recent years, winning numerous awards, travelling further than ever before and expanding every day. Screen Africa chatted to Alexi Wheeler, VP of Animation Production and Development at Nickelodeon to get his input on our industry.

HOW HAS THE LANDSCAPE CHANGED IN THE AFRICAN ANIMATION INDUSTRY IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS?

There is a lot more happening than has been before; the nature of the projects coming out of Africa resonates more globally. South Africa has always had a very creative scene which has allowed us to tap into for content. Local animators are definitely more visible in the international landscape. This is an encouraging trend because there is a need to continuously invest in, grow and develop the skills and talent in this industry.

WHICH TRENDS, IN YOUR OPINION, ARE CURRENTLY DOMINATING THE GLOBAL ANIMATION INDUSTRY?

Globally the trends for the next five years are: Shows that are grounded more with fundamental principles such as family, friends and that relate more to the environment of home and school. There is a definite rise in local content around the world which is translating to a more glocal audience.

WHAT ELEMENTS ARE CRUCIAL IN DEVELOPING A SUCCESSFUL ANIMATED SERIES FOR YOUNGER VIEWERS?

We like our projects to contain three main elements: Broad, Simple, and Emotional. Broad meaning that kids all over the word can relate to it and also find it funny. Simple being that the idea is not over complicated, and is accessible and explainable in a one liner. Emotional meaning it provides a firm connection to the viewer giving them someone to root for and care about.

HOW DO THE SOUTH AFRICAN AND INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCES COMPARE – SIMILARITIES/DIFFERENCES?

Kids today have an altogether different attitude towards entertainment – one that puts a premium on more new content and on-demand viewing. Similar to global markets, family remains the bedrock for kids and is their number one source of happiness. It’s important that our content embodies this value.

WHAT SETS SOUTH AFRICAN ANIMATORS AND CONTENT APART ON THE GLOBAL STAGE?

The story telling format of the local market is by nature very authentic, clear and honest, creating a distinct voice in the region. Because of the diversity of the African continent, there is an opportunity to create and share these stories on more global platforms.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE EXCITING RECENT PROJECTS COMING OUT OF SA?

Yes, MooseBox is one of two first international short form animated series to come out of Nickelodeon’s annual Global Animated Shorts Programme, designed to identify and develop original comedy-driven content for kids. MooseBox, a 20 x 90-second episode order, was created by Mike Scott from South Africa, with the short form series produced by Johannesburg-based studio Mind’s Eye Creative. The original short was produced by Cape Town-based Triggerfish Animation. Moose and CatBox (AKA ‘MooseBox’) are two best friends who need each other as much as they need to play, explore and survive the unpredictable video game world called The Cube.

MooseBox, along with another international short form animation was chosen out of 850 global pitches.

MooseBox from Nickelodeon International on Vimeo.

HOW DO YOU SEE SOUTH AFRICA FURTHER DEVELOPING AS A GLOBAL PLAYER IN THE ANIMATION INDUSTRY?

I think South Africa is already highly recognised and already considered a global player in the animation industry with the likes of Triggerfish being nominated in the 2018 Oscars in the animation category for Revolting Rhymes. Sunrise Productions has also already garnered huge success in the Asian market with their popular Jungle Beat animation series.

HOW DO LOCAL FESTIVALS SUCH AS THE CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL BENEFIT THE INDUSTRY?

The Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) provides the opportunity for creatives, industry, broadcasters and government to collaborate and explore ways to work together. Most importantly it allows us to get the message out to students and up and coming creative, exposing them to the incredible talents and opportunities that the market offers.

More importantly, the student awards which we participated in for the third consecutive year at this year’s CTIAF – which took place in March 2018 – sponsors a prize for two students to participate in a two week internship at our Burbank studios in the USA. Our continued commitment to this award is indicative of Nickelodeon’s commitment to creating platforms which contribute to and uplift Africa’s youth and society along with the opportunity to showcase young animators internationally.

This market has tremendous opportunity and Nickelodeon is committed to growing and nurturing the industry.

Wheeler held various roles during his time at Nickelodeon, working up from programming manager in 2010 to manager, director, senior director and finally animation veep for Nick International. Prior, he was a development executive at Rubber Duck Entertainment and a producer for eOne Family. He has produced more than 250 hours of content for preschoolers and kids 6-12. Wheeler is also responsible for implementing the Nickelodeon International Shorts Program and International Preschool Shorts Initiative.

Wheeler’s producer credits include international hits Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, Fireman Sam and Nella the Princess Night.

Netflix has been diving into more international kids series, recently announcing that it would be adapting a popular Dutch medieval adventure novel for kids entitled The Letter for the King into a Netflix Original series for kids and families. It also jumped on board a new original kids fantasy series The Dragon Prince by Aaron Ehasz, the head writer of Nickelodeon’s hit series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

NickALive! wishes Alexi all the best in all his future endeavours. :)

Jenna Boyd Talks About How Nickelodeon Is Searching The Internet For The Next Generation Of Animation Talent

Variety has unveiled a article which features a exclusive interview with Jenna Boyd, Nickelodeon's Senior Vice President (SVP) of animation development! In the interview, Jenna talks about how Nickelodeon is searching the internet for the next generation of animation talent. Jenna also reveals that Nickelodeon is currently developing "Moosebox", a animated short created by Mike Scott from South Africa's Triggerfish Animation Studios that was a finalist in Nickelodeon's 2013 Global Animated Shorts Programme, into a series!

Variety's article also features a interview with Nickelodeon veteran Fred Seibert, the founder and CEO of Frederator Networks ("The Fairly Oddparents", "ChalkZone", "My Life as a Teenage Robot", "Fanboy & Chum Chum", "Random! Cartoons", "Oh Yeah!Cartoons"):
Internet Serves as Spawning Ground for Emerging Animators

Not long ago, the main road to animation careers ran through art schools, and while many young animators still follow that path, other avenues are emerging.

Just ask Jenna Boyd, Nickelodeon’s senior VP of development. “The Internet has connected animators and artists around the world through Tumblr, Vimeo, YouTube, web comics and other social media channels,” she says.

Nick’s response: “We have a scout who scours the Internet to find talent. You have to do that. It’s the new normal.”

Nickelodeon shows like C.H. Greenblatt’s “Harvey Beaks” and Chris Savino’s “Loud House” reflect the new paradigm. By casting a wide net online, Greenblatt found talents like Monica Ray and Hannah Ayoubi; both are now developing Nick shows.

“There are lots of stories by female creators we haven’t seen before,” says Boyd. “Chris found a woman named Violaine Briat on Tumblr who’s a French citizen living in Japan. We’re working on bringing her to Nick.”

Nickelodeon also discovers talent online through its Global Shorts program, notes Boyd. “We’ve gotten over 1,000 pitches. Many people around the world submit ideas this way. We discovered a guy in South Africa (Mike Scott) who animated a short called ‘Moose Box’ that we’re developing into a series. Technology enables him to make his own animation, though it takes a larger studio infrastructure to scale something up to be a series.”

MooseBox from Nickelodeon International on Vimeo.

'MooseBox', created by Mike Scott and produced at Triggerfish Animation Studios for the Nickelodeon International Animated Shorts Program 2013-14.

Given the explosion of animation online, it’s not surprising that TV veterans like Frederator Studios’ Fred Seibert (“The Fairly OddParents,” “Adventure Time”) are focused on building Internet hubs where new artists can be seen.

“When I started getting engaged with the Internet 10 years ago, we sent out an email saying we were starting a channel on iTunes,” Seibert recalls. “Within a week, we got 1,000 short films. Our business is based on the talent we can meet. It’s a volume game: the more talent you meet, the more likely you’ll bump into someone brilliant.”

Today, Seibert has several online channels that showcase a worldwide network of animators, including the popular YouTube channel Cartoon Hangover.

“This channel has almost a million and a half subscribers,” he says. One breakout star is Natasha Allegri, who created “Bee & PuppyCat,” a show that has attracted funding from both YouTube and thousands of fans via Kickstarter. Seibert describes the broad reach of this young animator quite simply: “ ‘Bee & PuppyCat’ is being watched over Google Hangouts by young people in El Salvador.”

It’s estimated that a billion people watch YouTube every month — only one indication that the Web reps more than just a place where animators can be discovered. It’s also a destination for independently minded artists.

One example: Jacob Streilein, who was a star student at CalArts until last year. Instead of accepting a job from major studios, he chose Jib Jab — best known for its online animations skewering politicians. “It’s more appealing to have the opportunity to jump around and work on a combination of projects, where I can design, animate and direct,” he says. “At bigger studios you typically do just one thing.”

Streilein expects to pursue his own animation, examples of which can be seen on Vimeo. That’s a mind-set that could typify many artists in the Internet age.

Young animators who view the web as a place to shine need look no further than the success of the indie stop-motion animator with the moniker PES. Recognized for his Oscar-nominated short “Fresh Guacamole,” he says artists can make money on YouTube via ad revenue sharing: “A highly desirable piece of content can bring in money in different ways.”

PES’ latest, “Submarine Sandwich,” attracted 3.5 million views in two-and-a-half months. He funded it through a Nikon sponsorship and a Kickstarter campaign that raised $50,000 in four days.

While it’s not an easy path to success, PES thinks the web’s appeal is growing because the exposure can be so wide. “There are kids who’ve chosen to release films on the Vine platform. They could be 16 years old and have more distribution than the New York Times.”

Siebert agrees. “Every shift in technology and distribution unleashes the forces of creative people in ways that we couldn’t imagine before.”
