Nickelodeon South East Asia to Premiere 'Sharkdog' Soon

Nickelodeon South East Asia will premiere Sharkdog, the hit animated series from Singaporean creator Jacinth Tan, very soon!

Sharkdog

Sharkdog (2020) follows 10 year old Max and his best friend Sharkdog - half shark, half dog, all appetite. Blissfully unaware of his own strength, stealth and general sharkiness, Sharkdog often leaves a trail of chaos in his wake. But, like all good half-dogs, he's Max's BFF and Max is his.

The series is produced by Paramount, in partnership with Singaporean based CGI animation studio One Animation, and debuted on Netflix globally in September 2021, where it is currently in its third season. Sharkdog is Paramount's first internationally originated global animated series for Netflix, and is also the first animated series from Singapore to come out of Nickelodeon's Global Animated Shorts Program, designed to identify and develop long form original comedy-driven content for kids globally.

Prior to Netflix ordering Sharkdog, Nickelodeon International announced in 2017 that it had greenlit a series of 90-second shorts based on the characters, which premiered as a short-form digital series for the Nickelodeon Play App in Asia.

Sharkdog was the first Singaporean series to come out of Nickelodeon's Global Animated Shorts Program. But it’s in good company, as several animated shorts from Nick’s program have turned into full fledged series recently. This includes Toronto-based prodco Nelvana’s 26 x 22-minute animated series Ollie’s Pack, which began as an original short dubbed Monster Pack for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program; The Loud House, also from the 2013 Animated Shorts Program; and It’s Pony, which was part of Nick’s 2015 Global Animated shorts program.

It is the latest agreement between a ViacomCBS company and Netflix. Last year, Nickelodeon and Netflix struck an output deal that will yield original animated feature films and TV series based on existing Nickelodeon library characters as well as newly created ones. Prior to the agreement, Netflix ordered forthcoming specials based on The Loud House (premiering August 20) and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The deal builds on a relationship that has brought animated specials Rocko’s Modern Life: Static ClingInvader Zim: Enter the Florpus and Glitch Techs to Netflix. Netflix is also producing a live-action version of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Young Carmel actor gets voice role in ‘Sharkdog’

Liam Mitchell performs in a TV series in the comfort of his Carmel home.

Mitchell plays the boy, Max, who finds “Sharkdog,” a half dog, half shark, in an animated series of shorts produced by Nickelodeon. It debuts Sept. 3 on Netflix.

Mitchell, who is in the seventh grade at St. Louis de Montfort in Fishers, was cast in the series after participating in a summer camp in Ohio in 2019.

The camp was hosted by Greg James, who has many connections in the talent industry in Los Angeles.

“At the end of the camp, he flies out managers, casting directors and agents from Los Angeles,” Mitchell said. “The kids put on a showcase, and after the showcase the managers, agents and directors may offer to sign you. I had several offers at the end but ended up selecting The Savage Agency and Heyman Talent.”

Mitchell is represented by the Savage Agency in Los Angles for his role in “Sharkdog.” The agent sends Mitchell auditions, which he does by tape. He was offered the role on ‘Sharkdog’ in November 2020 and started working on it shortly thereafter.

“Nickelodeon sends me everything I need to record,” Mitchell said. “My dad built a recording studio in a closet in our basement. I work once a week for about 2 to 3 hours. I get on a Zoom with the sound team in L.A. and I record my lines with them.”

Mitchell has recorded 20 or 21 episodes for the first season, plus a Halloween special. He is working on Season 2 now.

“I love that Max is kind of really like me,” Mitchell said. “He has a love for animals and seems to always be getting himself out of tricky situations. Not only will kids love the show, adults will, too. They are 7-minute shorts so they can captivate the attention of the littlest viewers, but the adventures that Max and Sharkdog have are fun for adults, too.”

From WTHR:

Carmel voice actor lands leading role in Netflix animated series

The first season of "Sharkdog" is now streaming on Netflix.

CARMEL, Ind. — Carmel seventh-grader Liam Mitchell landed his first big role late last year in the new Netflix series "Sharkdog."

He plays Max, the owner of a half-dog, half-shark pet.

"I use Max as my own self. I just up the energy, and Max is me," Liam said.

Liam has always been an actor and landed an agent in Los Angeles after attending an acting camp. From there, he landed a lead role on "Sharkdog."

"I was just super excited. I didn't really know what to expect. I had never done something this large," Liam said.

"You submit so many opportunities, and you're looking for one to land. Sometimes, the one you don't expect to land lands, which is what happened here. It's much more impactful," said Liam's father, Will.

Liam isn't recording from a flashy studio in Los Angeles — his voice work in the Netflix series is done from a tiny closet in the basement of his Carmel home.

Although it's tight, it gets the job done. Now, Liam is reaching audiences everywhere.

Carmel seventh-grader Liam Mitchell records voiceover work in a tiny closet in the basement of his home.

"It didn't really sink in until I saw the trailer," Liam said. "Once I saw the trailer, I was just in awe. Like, that's me? That's who I am? And once I saw the cast list had my name, I was just completely in awe."

"To have something that is as mainstream as this, with Netflix and Nickelodeon collaborating, for him to get that opportunity, I think we were blown away," Will said. "We expected stuff much more localized initially, but to get this opportunity has been a God-given gift."

The first season of "Sharkdog" is now streaming on Netflix.

Nickelodeon Passes on 'Planet Panic'

Nickelodeon has passed on greenlighting Planet Panic to series. Filmmaker Gene Goldstein, who previously served as a background artist on nearly 100 episodes of The Loud House as well as on the upcoming The Loud House Movie, announced the unfortunate news on his Twitter page.

Although Nickelodeon has passed on the property, this isn't the end of the story. One positive bit of news from the decision is that the rights to Planet Panic now revert back to Goldstein, leaving him free to shop the property around other networks and studios, so there's a good chance we'll see a Planet Panic series elsewhere.

Planet Panic is a animated short created and developed by Goldstein, which was originally selected as a finalist in 2015 edition of Nickelodeon's world renowned Animated Shorts Program. The short is based on Goldstein's animated comic of the name, which can be viewed here: http://www.planet-panic.com.

On Planet Panic, giant monsters roaming the city are as normal as morning traffic. Viewers meet Pibbles, a non-binary kid hero in training, and Zeus: Pibbles' partner, mentor, and a man-machine hybrid.

Netflix & ViacomCBS International Studios Team on Animated Kids Series ‘Sharkdog’

Update (4/8): Official Netflix Press Release via TheFutonCritic.com:

NETFLIX WELCOMES A NEW PET TO THE FAMILY IN AN ALL-NEW ANIMATED SERIES "SHARKDOG"

-- New series from ViacomCBS International Studios and first-time Singaporean creator will be available to audiences worldwide in 2021 --

Netflix and ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) announce Sharkdog an animated series from Singaporean creator Jacinth Tan.

The 20 x 7 minute episode animated series is produced by ViacomCBS International Studios, in partnership with Singaporean based CGI animation studio One Animation, and will premiere in 2021.

Logline: The series follows 10 year old Max and his best friend Sharkdog - half shark, half dog, all appetite. Blissfully unaware of his own strength, stealth and general sharkiness, Sharkdog often leaves a trail of chaos in his wake. But, like all good half-dogs, he's Max's BFF and Max is his.

Sharkdog is VIS' first internationally originated global animated series for Netflix. It is also the first animated series from Singapore to come out of Nickelodeon's Global Animated Shorts Program, designed to identify and develop long form original comedy-driven content for kids globally.

Update (11/8) - ViacomCBS recently applied to patent Sharkdog with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) under the categories of " Games; toys; sports equipment", "Clothing; footwear; headgear" and "Education; entertainment". All three applications are currently pending. Interestingly, the show is being patented under the title Sharkdog Nickelodeon. It's currently unknown whether this related to the Nickelodeon series, or the upcoming Netflix series.

Update (3/27/1) - ViacomCBS has given us a first look at the Sharkdog logo! Interestingly, the media company has applied to trademark the title under the Nickelodeon banner:

Original post:

Netflix has ordered new animated kids show, Sharkdog, from ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS)!

The streamer has ordered 20 episodes of the 7-minute show, created by first-time Singaporean creator Jacinth Tan that will air in 2021. The show is produced by VIS in partnership with Singaporean based CGI animation studio One Animation (Oddbods).

It marks VIS’ first internationally originated global animated series for Netflix.

The show follows 10-year old Max and his best friend Sharkdog – half shark, half dog, all appetite. Blissfully unaware of his own strength, stealth and general sharkiness, Sharkdog often leaves a trail of chaos in his wake. But, like all good half-dogs, he’s Max’s BFF and Max is his.

Sharkdog originally came out of Nickelodeon’s Global Animated Shorts Program, which is designed to identify and develop original comedy-driven content for kids, in 2015. You can see an early vision of the show above and this will be updated for Netflix. Sharkdog is also the first animated series from Singapore to come out of Nickelodeon’s Global Animated Shorts Program.

Nickelodeon International subsequently announced in 2017 that it had greenlit a series of 90-second shorts based on the characters, which debuted as a short-form digital series for the Nickelodeon Play App in Asia.

It is the latest agreement between a ViacomCBS company and Netflix. Last year, Nickelodeon and Netflix struck an output deal that will yield original animated feature films and TV series based on existing Nickelodeon library characters as well as newly created ones. Prior to the agreement, Netflix ordered forthcoming specials based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The deal builds on a relationship that has brought animated specials Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus and Glitch Techs to Netflix. Netflix is also producing a live-action version of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

It is the latest third-part order for the ViacomCBS division, which has been stepping up its development and production of ideas for non-ViacomCBS networks. Last month, ViacomCBS’ UK production studio scored its first U.S. order – a ten-part music documentary series for Reelz called The Story of the Songs.

Sharkdog was the first Singaporean series to come out of the competition. But it’s in good company, as several animated shorts from Nick’s program have turned into full fledged series recently. This includes Toronto-based prodco Nelvana’s new 26 x 22-minute animated series Ollie’s Pack, which began as an original short dubbed Monster Pack for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program. And, in January, Nickelodeon premiered the 2D-animated comedy series It’s Pony (20 x 22 minutes), which was part of Nick’s 2015 Global Animated shorts program.

How 'DeadEndia' Nearly Became a Nickelodeon's Animated Series

London, UK-based animation show runner, writer and comics creator Hamish Steele has revealed in a interview with Our Culture that his brand new animated series, DeadEndia, based on his hit horror-comedy graphic novels of the same name was once destined for Nickelodeon!

DeadEndia “follows the adventures of Barney and Norma, two humans who stumble upon the supernatural secrets of Dead End, an amusement park haunted house! Joining their adventures are Pugsley, a pug possessed by a demon king, and Courtney, the guardian of the elevator to the 13 Planes of Existence!”

Talking to Our Culture, Steele revealed: "My first proper job in the industry was a DeadEndia short for Cartoon Hangover. We developed that for a little bit at Nickelodeon but it didn’t end up happening. But I did do a couple of pilots there and they got me in touch with Blink Industries and I’ve worked there ever since."

Steele added: "Between the short and now, I developed DeadEndia into a webcomic on the side and the planets ended up aligning where Alexi Wheeler, the guy who originally wanted to make DeadEndia at Nickelodeon, moved over to Netflix. Sometimes it takes many years for the right time, right place to happen but it does happen."

Whilst DeadEndia didn't happen at Nickelodeon, Steele did get to make a couple of animated shorts for the Nickelodeon International Animated Shorts Program: The Tall Tales of Urchin and Badly Drawn Animals.

A DeadEndia animated series is currently in development at Netflix.

Nickelodeon: No Current Plans to Release 'It's Pony' Pilot

Nickelodeon’s latest animated series It’s Pony premiered on Saturday, January 18 and instantly became a firm favorite with fans. The debut episode scored the network’s biggest animated series launch since 2018’s The Adventures of Kid Danger, posting solid double-digit gains over last year with Kids 2-11 (2.1/453K, up +24%) and Kids 6-11 (1.9/250K, +27%). The Saturday morning premiere (Jan. 18 at 11:30 a.m.) also drew 959,000 Total Viewers. And, the series ranked as TV’s #2 animated telecast for the week with Kids 2-11, behind only SpongeBob SquarePants.

With It’s Pony becoming an instant hit, fans have been asking Ant Blades, the creator of the series, whether there are any plans to release the original It’s Pony short, which was made as part Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program. However, Ant has revealed that there are unfortunately no plans to release the show's pilot, saying on Twitter "No plans to, I'm afraid." Ant does remain optimistic, however, closing his Tweet with "One day :)".

Nickelodeon Animation has, in recent years been releasing shorts from its world-renowned Animated Shorts Program on social media, such as YouTube and Facebook. A collection of shorts can be found here. It would be fantastic if Nickelodeon Animation could release the It’s Pony pilot as part of its Animated Shorts Program collection at one point in the future!

It’s Pony (originally titled Pony) is an original 2D-animated buddy comedy that follows the life of an average girl named Annie, her (almost) average family, and what happens when an enthusiastic, unpredictable and carefree talking pony comes to live with them in their city apartment.

Throughout the season, the series will explore the everyday life and hijinks of two best friends whose optimism and enthusiasm turn any situation from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether making an epic quest down the street to mail a letter, heroically saving the local playground with a bake sale, or simply getting a haircut, Pony and Annie always stick together because life is better as a pair.

The series stars Jessica DiCicco (Adventure Time) as Annie, an optimistic and determined farm girl living in the city with her family and best friend Pony; Josh Zuckerman (Strange Angel) as Pony, who is naïve and impulsive, but loves Annie more than anything; Abe Benrubi (E.R.) as Dad, who treats Pony as a nuisance, but recognizes the special bond he shares with Annie; and India de Beaufort (All Hail King Julien) as Mom, who loves Annie and Pony’s relationship and always has a new project in the works.

Additional cast members bringing characters to life include: Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) as Annie’s friend Fred; Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live) as Annie’s friend Brian; Rosario Dawson (Rent) as Annie’s school principal Ms. Ramiro; Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains) as the landlord Mr. Pancks; Megan Hilty (Smash) as the too-obsessed-with-Pony friend Beatrice; Yvette Nicole Brown (Drake & Josh, Victorious) as Mrs. Dunscomb; Grey Griffin (Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, The Loud House, El Tigre, Wow Wow Wubbzy, As Told by Ginger, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Mighty B!, Rugrats, The Simpsons) as Henrietta; John DiMaggio (Sanjay and Craig, The Loud House, Futurama, Adventure Time) as Dave the Sewer Worker and Tomatopalooza Judge; and Dee Bradley Baker (SpongeBob SquarePants, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Gravity Falls, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Dog.

The first animated comedy series to be greenlit for the U.S. from Nickelodeon International, It’s Pony is created by Ant Blades, based off a short of the same name from Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program.

It’s Pony airs Saturdays on Nickelodeon USA and will roll out internationally beginning April 2020.

Fur-Ever Family Tiny Gallery | Nickelodeon Animation

Fur-Ever Family Tiny Gallery | Nick Animation

One of Nickelodeon's Animated Shorts, Fur-Ever Family, inspired a tiny gallery with a big impact! Darin McGowan, creator of the short, hosted a silent auction art gallery in a tiny conference room in the Loud House production area, where artists from the Casagrandes and Loud House crews made different pieces that represented his characters in unique styles. Each piece raised money for animals in need of homes, a theme from his short film.

Update - Below is Nickelodeon's original Press Release announcing the exciting news!:

Nickelodeon Launches New Animated Shorts Program

Nick’s “Intergalactic Shorts Program” Designed to Identify Next Generation of Animation Talent Around the World

June 10, 2019 02:37 PM Eastern Daylight Time

BURBANK, Calif.--Nickelodeon is setting out to develop the next generation of animation talent through the launch of its new Intergalactic Shorts Program. With new leadership at Nick Animation, and a newly installed team driving its search for new talent, the Intergalactic Shorts Program is designed to identify original, comedy-driven content and nurture the voices and passionate storytellers behind them in a creative-led environment.

Ramsey Naito, Nickelodeon’s Executive Vice President, Animation Production and Development, will oversee the program. Newly hired Conrad Vernon (Sausage Party) has joined Nickelodeon as the program’s executive producer, with Derek Evanick (Harvey Beaks) and Diana Lafyatis (Adventure Time) serving as part of the program’s creative braintrust. International pitches and ideas will be welcomed by Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President International Production and Development, Nickelodeon.

Said Naito: “Our shorts program is intergalactic because we want to create a universe of new stars ready to make the next big animated hits of the future,” said Naito. “Our doors are open to the best ideas out there and around the world, and we can’t wait to get started building this new home for visionary talent.”

In line with Nickelodeon’s co-viewing strategy to offer content appealing to all members of the family, the target demo for content submitted to the Intergalactic Shorts Program is Kids 6-11, with a secondary focus on content appealing to Adults 18-49, as well. Ideas will be accepted from a broad pool of creative talent from all quarters, including artists, designers, writers, directors and comedians. Creators will be provided with the necessary artistic and production support teams to help them complete their fully animated short. These shorts will have opportunities to air on different platforms and be developed for potential long-form animated series. Details surrounding submissions will be available this summer.

Nickelodeon Launches Animation ‘Intergalactic Shorts Program’

The Intergalactic Shorts Program aims to nurture new talent, with a focus on comedy content for six to 11s that could turn into long-form programming.

ANNECY — Nickelodeon is launching the Intergalactic Shorts Program, aimed at developing the next generation of animation talent from around the globe. The new animated shorts program will have a focus on comedy-driven content. The network announced the news today during the first day of the 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

The venture is to be spearheaded by Ramsey Naito, Nickelodeon’s Executive Vice President (EVP) of Animation Production and Development, along with newly-hired producer Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, The Addams Family, Sausage Party) who will act as the program’s executive producer, accompanied by Derek Evanick (Harvey Beaks) and Diana Lafyatis (Adventure Time) who serve as part of the program’s creative braintrust.

The group will be responsible for selecting domestic projects, with global pitches handled by Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President (SVP) of International Production and Development at Nickelodeon.

“Our shorts program is intergalactic because we want to create a universe of new stars ready to make the next big animated hits of the future,” said Naito in a written statement. “Our doors are open to the best ideas out there and around the world, and we can’t wait to get started building this new home for visionary talent.”

Nickelodeon says this global call for shorts differs from previous ones because the network is looking for concepts that have appeal beyond the traditional Nickelodeon audience.

In a conversation with Variety in the build-up to this year’s festival, Naito went into detail about the scope of the program, explaining that not only will the call for shorts be global in reach, but that the network is looking for content intended for broader audiences than what Nickelodeon has previously aimed for.

According to the press release, “The target demo for content submitted to the Intergalactic Shorts Program is Kids 6-11, with a secondary focus on content appealing to Adults 18-49 [in keeping with Nick’s co-viewing strategy], as well.”

Accepted shorts will come from artists, designers, writers, directors, comedians and more, essentially anyone with an idea strong enough to warrant backing by the network, from around the world. Once accepted, the creators will be provided with the artistic and production support teams necessary to execute their vision and deliver a fully-finished animated short.

While no definitive distribution plan has yet been clarified, according to the press release: “These shorts will have opportunities to air on different platforms and be developed for potential long-form animated series.”

Further details will be released by Nick later this summer.
