Paramount Faces Copyright Lawsuit Over 'Ollie’s Pack' Animated Series

Paramount Global has been hit with a copyright lawsuit alleging that the Ollie’s Pack animated children’s show that aired on its Nickelodeon channel unlawfully copied the characters in another cartoon called The Journey.

Plaintiff Tevin Murry pitched The Journey to Sell Your TV Concept Now Inc., which initially showed interest in developing the project but put it on hold in early 2020, according to the complaint filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia on Thursday (April 6).

That company’s co-founders, Jean and Mark Simon, are also listed as defendants in the case.

Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series combines the struggles of tween life with the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters.

Ollie’s Pack follows Ollie and his backpack, which doubles as a powerful portal allowing an array of monsters to travel from the Monsterverse into Ollie’s world on Earth. Throughout the series, Ollie and his two best friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while often utilizing the helpful monsters who assist with their everyday tween problems, like sneaking into a movie or winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest. No matter the circumstances, Ollie’s thirst for adventure undoubtedly gets him into trouble that only he and his friends can resolve. The series is created by Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty), and is based on Monster Pack, an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program.

Ollie’s Pack made its world premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. in April 2020, before rolling out on Nickelodeon channels and branded blocks internationally, reaching over 170 countries and territories. The series finale aired on Nicktoons in May 2021.

Tevin Murry v. Jeanne Simon et al., Civil Action No. 1:23-cv-01493-MLB (N.D. Ga., Apr. 6, 2023)

Plaintiff Tevin Murry, writer/creator of a proposed teen-focused television show exploring themes relating to bullying, is suing the consultants who helped him commercialize the project, and who he alleges stole his idea and sold it to Nickelodeon.

In his Complaint, Murry claims copyright over the characters in his original, creative work entitled “The Journey” with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2017 (Copyright Registration No. VAu001312124). Complaint, at 1. Murry also claimed copyright over the story under the name “The Journey” the following year (Copyright Registration No. TXu002075184). Id.

In April 2020, Paramount’s Nickelodeon channel aired the first episode of a cartoon show, produced by Defendant Nelvana, entitled “Ollie’s Pack.” Id. at 2. Murry alleges Defendant Nelvana’s work is “strikingly similar . . . too much so to be an independent creation.” Id. Murry’s Complaint outlines a thorough list of similarities between the works, ranging from similarities between the main characters to similarities revolving around other story elements and illustrations. See id. at 8-9. The final episodes of Ollie’s Pack aired on Nicktoons from May 3 to 6, 2021. Id. at 8.

The Complaint seeks judgment for copyright infringement and contributory copyright infringement under federal copyright law, an accounting of all the Defendants’ profits gained from their alleged unlawful use of Plaintiff’s work, and damages related to Defendants’ past infringement and all future broadcasts, digital releases and licenses, among others.

The case has been assigned to Judge Michael L. Brown.

A Nickelodeon kínálatában a legkisebb korosztályt tanulásra és gondolkodásra ösztönző Szuper Szárny és Umozoomi csapat mellett az iskolásoknak is szórakozást nyújtó Tini Ninja Teknőcök felemelkedése, SpongyaBob Kockanadrág és a Tündéri keresztszülők is elérhető. Az élő szereplős műsorok terén többek között a világot meghódító Big Time Rush és a V, mint Viktória tekinthető meg.

Humor vonalon a Comedy Centralról ismert New York-i lányok mindennapjait követő Broad City-t, a felnőtt animációs rajzfilmek szerelmeseinek a Furcsa Amcsik és a Firka Villa sorozatokat ajánljuk. Amy Schumer, világhírű komika, pedig az Amynek áll a világ című vígjátéksorozatával biztosítja a rendszeres kacagást az otthonokban.

Az említett sorozatok mellett számos ismert és szórakoztató műsor is megtalálható a videótárban a két csatorna kínálatából.

Az öt évadon keresztül nagy sikerrel futó Veszélyes Henry már meghódította a világot, és rengeteg háztartásban üdvözlik szeretettel a tinifiút, aki csupán egy egyszerű munkát szeretett volna találni magának, lehetőleg korrekt fizetéssel és kevés felelősséggel. Egy áruházi álláshirdetés azonban máshova szólt, mint hitte volna, így a hírhedt szupermanus, Hőskapitány másodhegedűsévé avanzsált pillanatok alatt. A Veszélyes Tini alteregó mögé bújó ifjúnak a bűnözők megfékezése mellett kaotikus családi életét is menedzselnie kell. Nem kis feladat lenne ez bárkinek, hát még egy serdülő fiúnak!

A Nickelodeon nem engedte el szuperhősei kezét: Henry kalandjait követően Hőskapitány és gárdája további megpróbáltatásokkal és mókás szituációkkal találkozik. A Veszélyes Osztagban a férfiasan tökéletes idol egy csapat fiatal titán kiképzését vállalja magára. Az önmagukat felfedező, leendő hősök saját képességeikkel és a város közbiztonságának rendbetételével is hadilábon állnak.

És mi a helyzet akkor, ha valakit különleges tulajdonságokkal áldott meg az élet, és ezt nem kell titkolni a család elől sem? Tekintve, hogy mindenki szuperember a famíliában! A Thundermann család számára ez a közös nevező, így számukra egy együtt töltött nyaralás vagy egy piknik a parkban se telhet bűnüldözés és hálát rebegő civilek nélkül. A belső problémákat pedig csak fokozza, hogy az egyik fiú, Max meglehetősen szimpatizál a gonosz oldallal.

A Nickelodeon szuperhős hétvégék május elsején kezdődnek. A Veszélyes Henry, a Veszélyes Osztag és A Thundermann család epizódjai minden szombaton és vasárnap 12:30-tól láthatók a csatornán.

In  "Back to the Pack (Part 1) / Back to the Pack (Part 2)," airing on Monday 17th May 2021, Ollie accidentally tears his pack while trying to find out about his dad, which causes a portal to open, and the fabric of space and time to unravel in weird ways.

'Ollie’s Pack' Co-Creator Reveals There Are No Current Plans for Season 2

As Nicktoons begins to air the remaining episodes of Ollie’s Pack season one, fans have been wondering about the future of the show, including whether it'll be getting a second season. Unfortunately, it looks like fans will be disappointed.

Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series combines the struggles of tween life with the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters.

Ollie’s Pack follows Ollie and his backpack, which doubles as a powerful portal allowing an array of monsters to travel from the Monsterverse into Ollie’s world on Earth. Throughout the series, Ollie and his two best friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while often utilizing the helpful monsters who assist with their everyday tween problems, like sneaking into a movie or winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest. No matter the circumstances, Ollie’s thirst for adventure undoubtedly gets him into trouble that only he and his friends can resolve. The series is created by Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty), and is based on Monster Pack, an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program.

Ollie’s Pack made its world premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. in April 2020, and is currently rolling out on Nickelodeon channels and branded blocks internationally, reaching over 170 countries and territories.

When a fan asked Eboli on Twitter on whether Ollie’s Pack would be getting a season two, the creator revealed: "I don`t think there is a season 2 of Ollie`s Pack in the books, as far as I can tell. I was not contacted about it, and last I checked there were no news. Sorry."

At the moment, there doesn't seem to be plans for a second season of Ollie’s Pack, although this could change in the future.

Nickelodeon Iberia to Premiere 'Ollie's Pack' on Monday 26th April 2021

Ollie, his two best friends and an otherworldly backpack embark on monstrous adventures in Nickelodeon’s original action-comedy series, Ollie’s Pack, premiering on Nickelodeon Iberia on Monday 26th April 2021 at 14:00 on Nickelodeon Portugal and at 15:00h on Nickelodeon Spain (España)!

Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series combines the struggles of tween life with the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters.

Following launch, new episodes will continue to air weekdays at 14:00 on Nickelodeon in Portugal and at 15:00h on Nickelodeon in España. The series is locally titled Ollie y los monstruos in Spain.

“Ollie’s Pack is filled with excitement, humor, and heart, and we are thrilled to welcome Ollie and his friends to Nickelodeon’s incredible family of original characters,” said Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President of Development and Production, Nickelodeon.

Chris Rose, Vice President of Animation Production and Development, Nickelodeon, adds, “I can’t wait to introduce a new generation to the timeless tale of a boy growing up and finding his place, while simultaneously trying to save the world.”

Ollie’s Pack follows Ollie and his backpack, which doubles as a powerful portal allowing an array of monsters to travel from the Monsterverse into Ollie’s world on Earth. Throughout the series, Ollie and his two best friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while often utilizing the helpful monsters who assist with their everyday tween problems, like sneaking into a movie or winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest. No matter the circumstances, Ollie’s thirst for adventure undoubtedly gets him into trouble that only he and his friends can resolve.

In the first episode, “New Kid on Campus,” Ollie takes Captain Wowski to school in the pack. CW loves it so much he poses as the new kid the next day. Then, "The Chosen One(s), a former Chosen One unexpectedly shows up. Her presence creates a rift between Ollie and his pals. The series premiere is locally titled "Chico nuevo en el colegio / Los Elegidos" in Spain.

The US-English dub of the series stars James Hartnett (Cupcake & Dino) as Ollie, an ordinary, impulsive, and creative kid who has been given the status of Chosen One and Keeper of the Pack; Ana Sani (Mysticons) as Cleo, the brave and adventurous comic relief; and David Berni (Rocket Monkeys) as Bernie, the nervy and logical voice of reason.

Along the way, audiences will be introduced to some larger than life monsters including Andre and Bev, a bounty hunting double act; Major Snooch, a high ranking official in the Ministry of Chosen One Affairs; and Rance, a weaselly petty thief in utter denial about his boldfaced stealing.

The series originated from “Monster Pack,” an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program. Creators Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty) met at the Vancouver Film School and have now been friends for over 10 years. Pedro is a creator, producer, director and animator from Rio de Janeiro, while Graham is an animation supervisor and instructor at local and overseas studios.

Sin embargo, Ollie, Cleo y Bernie no solo intentarán evitar que el universo de monstruos provoque el caos en la Tierra, sino que también se divertirán conociendo a los monstruos más peculiares y utilizando a algunos de estos para intentar resolver sus problemas. Como cuando en uno de los episodios de estreno el grupo de amigos utiliza los poderes de los monstruos para hacer una película de superhéroes y así salvar su club de cine de la escuela; o como cuando en otro momento el extraño olor del sudor de Ollie se convierte en un producto muy apreciado en el universo de monstruos y lo intercambia por que le hagan la colada. Pero en muchas ocasiones serán las ganas de aventuras de Ollie la que les meterá en numerosos líos, como cuando Ollie finge estar enfermo y contrata a un monstruo para que le sustituya en el colegio.

A partir del lunes 26 de abril a las 15.00 horas todos los niños podrán acompañar a Ollie en sus viajes interdimensionales con el estreno de Ollie y los monstruos en Nickelodeon.
