Nickelodeon's Mike O'Malley and Kirk Fogg Call 'Older Brother' Marc Summers a 'Real Mensch' During Gameshow Era

The pair reminisced about working on classic Nickelodeon shows and taking a leaf out of Summers' book at 90s Con in Daytona Beach, Florida

Mike O'Malley and Kirk Fogg are raving about their Nickelodeon "older brother," Marc Summers.

During a panel at 90s Con in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday, Sept. 13, the two former kids' gameshow hosts looked back on their own experiences on Nickelodeon, and gave a hat tip to Summers, 72, who helped define the genre starting with Double Dare in the 1980s and, later, What Would You Do? on the same network.

"Marc Summers was an extremely gracious older brother and really wanted Nick to succeed and really had learned a lot by trial and error, and really was a phenomenal host and helped both of us," said O'Malley, 57, who hosted Get the Picture in 1991 and, later, Nickelodeon Guts from 1992 to 1995.

"He was someone who was doing a lot of live shows, live events - he helped everybody, he’s a real mensch," O'Malley added.

Along with Phil Moore (Nick Arcade) and Summer Sanders (Figure It Out), Summers, O'Malley and Fogg, 64, made up a special group of Nickelodeon kids' gameshow hosts that would define the friendly-competition genre for millennials.

Asked by PEOPLE at 90s Con whether the five of them have a group chat going all these years later, Fogg, who hosted Legends of the Hidden Temple from 1993 to 1995, said they don't - but if they did, "Marc would be in charge of it."

"I think all of us feeling a similar way about our experiences with Nickelodeon, and we have great pride," O'Malley added. "We talk to Marc and Phil about this too - about what Nick was. We’re all also at the point in our lives where we’re all reminiscing and looking back at that."

"Everybody has each other’s phone numbers. Our kids went to the same high school together," Fogg said of himself and O'Malley. "It seems like we’re kind of old friends."

Fogg also said he's just "grateful" to have been "able to be part of this kind of show" that "perpetually lives on."

"I was a big TV watcher as a kid - I'd watch as much as I possibly could," he said. "I really admire really good hosts. I loved all the gameshows back then, and I have my memories of shows I grew up on. I’m so glad that I have a positive show that I can stand behind for the rest of my life."

Nickelodeon Hosts Mike O'Malley and Kirk Fogg Confirm They Completed the Challenges on Their Shows

The Nickelodeon hosts of Guts and Legends of the Hidden Temple open up about their time on the network at 90s Con

Nickelodeon hosts Mike O'Malley and Kirk Fogg were masters at their own games — with slight advantages.

Speaking about their respective throwback gameshows Nickelodeon Guts and Legends of the Hidden Temple at 90s Con in Daytona Beach, Fla, on Friday, Sept. 13, O'Malley and Fogg both said they personally took on the climactic challenges that the tween-aged contestants famously faced at the end of each competition episode.

For O'Malley, 57, that came in the form of climbing Guts' mountain Aggro Crag. Contestants had to complete the challenge largely in the dark as different elements were thrown at them on their way to the top.

"That being said, I did not go through it with all of the effects," said the Emmy nominee. "The kids had the goggles on ... and [the effects] guys were jokers, chucking Styrofoam boulders."

"They had to perform with nuclear flying crystals - you can only imagine how toxic that was," O'Malley joked. "For the kids in the dark, with googles on, mist, smoke, confetti. I didn't do it like that. ... We did ask a lot of [the contestants]. You can imagine how much, as an adult, you lose your focus."

In Fogg's case, he had to run the entire temple that kids had to complete in 3 minutes or less to win the grand prize, facing dead ends, locked guards, dreaded temple guards and more.

The host, 64, did a run-through of his own during the show's first season in 1993, however, "all the doors were open," Fogg admitted.

"You had to watch your head," he continued, pointing out he was a bit taller than the average 12-year-old. "I did wear a helmet. I wanted to make sure every season I could get in and out in 3 minutes, and I did."

Discussing their own series and other similar Nickelodeon competition-show programming such as Nick Arcade, Get the Picture and Double Dare, O'Malley said kids of the '90s were "watching because they imagined themselves" in the shoes of the contestants.

"The whole thing about Guts was like, 'What would it be like if I could dunk a basketball?', when you’re a kid [and] you’re pretending to be [Michael Jordan]. So that’s what the show was about."

Continued the Glee alum, "Kids have a different experience laughing and having fun when their parents aren’t around. It’s just facts. It’s just very hard as a parent not to be parenting them at every moment."

The CW Cancels 'Legends of the Hidden Temple' Reboot

Legends of the Hidden Temple will not be back for a second season. The CW has canceled its reboot of the classic Nickelodeon adventure game show format after one season, TVLine and Deadline have confirmed.

Over its 13-episode run, Hidden Temple averaged 222K Live+Same Day viewers with a 0.1 demo rating, only growing to 298K with Live+7 playback factored in. Out of everything The CW aired this past TV season, it only drew a larger audience than Killer Camp and March. The Season 1 finale, now serving as the series finale, aired Jan. 16.

The reimagining of the popular ’90s Nickelodeon show and hosted by Cristela Alonzo, the adult version preserved many of the original show elements including Moat Crossings, The Steps of Knowledge and the Temple Run as well as the team names such as Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes and Green Monkeys. Dee Bradley Baker (Star Trek: Prodigy) returned as the voice of Olmec, the all knowing guardian of the Hidden Temple, with original host Kirk Fogg also making a cameo appearance. The rebooted version was taken out of the studio and scaled up with tougher challenges and bigger prizes as the contestants found their way through the “jungle".

Based on the original game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, Legends of the Hidden Temple was produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon Productions. The series was executive produced by Scott A. Stone and Marcus J. Fox (Paradise Run).

Stone & Company produced the original series that ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons between 1993-1995.

Legends of the Hidden Temple is the latest in a slew of CW series to be canceled this year, including Charmed, 4400, Naomi, Dynasty, In the Dark, Roswell, New Mexico, Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.

Original Host Kirk Fogg Returns to The CW's ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ Reboot

’90s Nick Kids rejoice! The CW’s reimagining of Nickelodeon's classic Legends of the Hidden Temple game show will welcome back its original host, Kirk Fogg!

Fogg will make the return beginning this Sunday, Nov. 7 for a four-episode arc, where he will serve as the contestant mentor as they take on the Temple Run. These appearances will have him reuniting with long-time associate, Dee Bradley Baker (Star Trek: Prodigy), who reprises his role as the voice of Olmec, as well as his blue denim shirt.

This reboot shares many of the original elements of the show — Olmec, the Steps of Knowledge, Temple Guards, Moat Crossing, team names — but with a more “grown-up” appeal, including bigger stunts and, this time, adult contestants.

Fogg shared a photo of the two on set. (Left: Fogg, Rright: Baker)

Fogg’s appearance on Sunday, November 7 will also mark another reunion, as this week’s episode will feature contestants who first appeared on the original ’90s Nickelodeon version of the show.

Fogg previously returned to Legends of the Hidden Temple for Nickelodeon's hit live-action movie inspired by the iconic game show in 2016.

Legends of the Hidden Temple airs Sundays on The CW at 8 p.m ET/PT. Check out the season trailer below:

With OG Contestants!!!

Get ready for a blast from the past ... Kirk Fogg says he's coming back as one of the faces of the rebooted '90s kids game show, "Legends of the Hidden Temple."

THE LEGEND RETURNS

Remember ... we also got Kirk back in May and he liked one of our photog's pitches on potential contestants.

Well, as it turns out ... Kirk says he was able to make the vision a reality ... and some contestants from the OG show, which he hosted for 3 seasons in the '90s, are getting a redo!!!

Kirk also gives us his thoughts on the new host and new look ... and tells us some fun stories from Olmec's original labyrinths.

The CW Unveils 'Legends of the Hidden Temple' Reboot Poster, Cast Photo

The CW has released a new poster and cast photo for the upcoming Legends of the Hidden Temple reboot! The series, which is set to debut on the network on Sunday, October 10th, is a revival of the popular children's game show that ran on Nickelodeon in the 1990s, but this time around will put adults through their paces exploring the titular temple. The revival had originally been announced for the mobile-only streaming service Quibi before it shuttered and The CW stepped in to bring the show to life.

Last month it was announced that The View alum Cristela Alonzo will host Legends of the Hidden Temple. Alonzo said at the time her casting was announced that she is thrilled to be part of the new version of the show having been a fan of the original.

"Having grown up on 90s pop culture and actually being a fan of the original Legends of the Hidden Temple, I am thrilled to be hosting the new updated version of the show," Alonzo said. "The biggest challenge for me on this show will be trying to simultaneously host it and contain my geeked-out excitement at the same time."

Credit: Tina Thorpe / The CW

"When we decided to revisit Legends of the Hidden Temple, we wanted a host with stature who also had the humor of a stand-up and the energy of a camp counselor," Scott A. Stone, creator and executive producer said. "That's Cristela Alonzo, she's perfect."

You can check out the synopsis for Legends of the Hidden Temple below.

"This supersized, adult version of LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE is taken out of the studio into a “jungle” and scaled up with tougher challenges and much bigger prizes on the line. It preserves the original Nickelodeon series’ favorite elements including: “Olmec” (the giant talking Mayan head), the“Moat Crossings,” “The Steps of Knowledge,” the “Temple Run,” and of course, the iconic team names: “Purple Parrots,” “Blue Barracudas,” “Orange Iguanas,” “Red Jaguars,” “Silver Snakes” and “Green Monkeys.” Every episode is a hero’s journey through a mysterious jungle. Five teams begin the journey, but only one is “strong enough and smart enough” to enter the ominous Olmec’s Temple, avoid the “dreaded” Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure, and return it to its rightful owner. Based on the original game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon. The series is executive produced by Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox (“Paradise Run”)."

Dee Bradley Baker (Avatar: The Last Airbender, American Dad) returns to reprise his iconic role of the voice of Olmec, the giant talking Mayan head.

Legends of the Hidden Temple will debut on The CW on Sunday, October 10th.

What to Know About The CW’s ‘Legends of the Hidden Temple’ Reboot

In just two weeks, 24,000 fans applied to be on the newly revived Legends of the Hidden Temple.

“We had to cut off applications,” notes executive producer Scott A. Stone, an original creator, on the adult-size reboot of Nickelodeon’s 1993–95 kids’ game show. “When we do an announcement for a new show, generally, we get 1,000 applicants, and that’s amazing. And if we get 2,000 applicants for a hit show, that’s a lot.”

So to say that adults are ready to reenter the Mayan-themed set they dreamed of racing through as children is a total understatement. “There’s so much love in the core 25 to 40-year-old audience,” Stone says, adding that his film students at The University of Southern California used to regularly dress up as the show’s determined contestants for Halloween. “It seems to have touched so many people’s hearts in the best of ways,” he says.

And Stone promises the CW’s reboot contains music of the same onscreen magic. Each hourlong episode — extended from the original’s half-hour installments — requires players to use both their brains and brawn to win a cash prize, with host, comic Cristela Alonzo, cheering them on. “She’s rooting for the contestants like she was doing it herself,” Stone adds, while also teasing, “there is a place for [original host] Kirk Fogg in the series, so you’ll hear about that [too].”

The series’ familiar, colorful team names, like the Blue Barracudas and Silver Snakes remain, as does Olmec, the ancient stone head that speaks (Dee Bradley Baker returns to voice), guiding contestants. Notes Stone: “[Olmec’s] got a bit of a face-lift.”

Legends of the Hidden Temple Nickelodeon

The four rounds, alternating between physical tests and trivia, remain too. Fans will recognize the taxing Moat Crossing, the Steps of Knowledge quiz and the athletic trials dubbed the Temple Games. And since this version is for adults, the educational portion of the competition has been tweaked. Initially, well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin and Amelia Earhart were focused on in the kids’ episodes, but for this take, Stone says, they wanted to dig a bit deeper for tales the contestants can emulate as they play. “We took the classic, epic stories, like the story of Gilgamesh, or the Greek legend of Atlantis, or the Irish legend of Cú Chulainn, and the Norse legend of Freyja — these are classic, really big stories and we’re telling them in a kind of abbreviated form,” he says.

Another big difference? The game’s set is now outside. “I went back to the summer camp I went to as a kid in Indiana, and the lake that I thought was ginormous… was a little pond,” Stone admits. “I didn’t want to have the same problem with people coming back to the show. So, thanks to the folks at the CW, we were able to blow this one up in a giant way. The Moat is huge — [approx.] 10,000 square feet. The Temple is massive. The Temple Guards are big and scary. We were able to make the show on a grand scale.”

And along with memorable rooms like the Pit of Despair, new surprises await in the Temple Run’s final maze. One is the Crypt of the Heartless: “You stick your hand into these scary skeletons and find a heart to put into a receptacle on the wall, and the whole room comes alive with veins,” Stone says. “It’s just beautiful.”

Legends of the Hidden Temple, Series Premiere, Sunday, October 10, 8/7c, The CW

Legends of the Hidden Temple: Rock God Preview Released (Exclusive)

The CW has provided ComicBook.com with an exclusive first look at a new trailer for Legends of the Hidden Temple, featuring the stone-faced temple idol Olmec and the ironic musical choice of "We Will Rock You" by Queen. Writer, producer, actor and comedian Cristela Alonzo is set to host the series, which is slated to debut on Sunday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Now featuring adult contestants and a larger scale in terms of both its competitions and its prizes, Legends of the Hidden Temple is aiming to take '90s Nick nostalgia and translating it into a bigger, broader version of the game than fans have seen before.

The original series debuted in 1993 and ran until 1995, with 120 episodes during that time. A TV movie based on the in-game story elements aired on Nickelodeon in 2017, proving that there was still some cache to the Legends of the Hidden Temple brand name. The CW is jointly owned by Warner Bros. and ViacomCBS, the latter being Nickelodeon's parent company.

"Having grown up on 90's pop culture and actually being a fan of the original Legends of the Hidden Temple, I am thrilled to be hosting the new updated version of the show," Alonzo said when the announcement was made back in July. "The biggest challenge for me on this show will be trying to simultaneously host it and contain my geeked-out excitement at the same time."

"When we decided to revisit Legends of the Hidden Temple, we wanted a host with stature who also had the humor of a stand-up and the energy of a camp counselor," said Scott A. Stone, Creator and Executive Producer. "That's Cristela Alonzo, she's perfect!"

The original Legends of the Hidden Temple was, like most of Nickelodeon's game shows of the time, set inside a studio and featured young contestants competing in a highly controlled environment in order to keep things as safe as possible. The new incarnation of Legends of the Hidden Temple is taken out of the studio and into a "jungle," and scaled up with tougher challenges and much bigger prizes on the line. It preserves the original Nickelodeon series' favorite elements including Olmec (the giant talking Mayan head), the "Moat Crossings," "The Steps of Knowledge," the "Temple Run," and the team names: "Purple Parrots," "Blue Barracudas," "Orange Iguanas," "Red Jaguars," "Silver Snakes" and "Green Monkeys." Every episode is a hero's journey through a mysterious jungle. Four teams begin the journey, but only one is "strong enough and smart enough" to enter the ominous Olmec's Temple, avoid the "dreaded" Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure, and return it to its rightful owner.

Based on the original game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, Legends of the Hidden Temple is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon. The series is executive produced by Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox.

Jet Jurgensmeyer Debuts Latest Single, 'Fast Forward'

With his latest single, “Fast Forward,” 16-year-old country singer Jet Jurgensmeyer knows that the waiting is the hardest part. The romantic anthem is all about wishing the clock would speed up so he and his sweetheart could fall in love for real, and its new video captures that slow agony.

Co-written by the young guitar-slinger and actor with Bridgette Tatum and Jessie G, the smitten country-rocker finds Jurgensmeyer stuck in romantic limbo. He’s old enough to know how he feels, but too young to truly do anything about it, and that’s a dilemma many can relate to. With smoldering guitar solos and a vibrant young vocal, Jurgensmeyer counts down the hours … dreaming of a remote control button that could make time fly.

Meanwhile, the teenaged talent filmed the track’s video in the Californian desert, capturing the painful emotional isolation of not being able to follow your heart. It premiered on Sounds Like Nashville today (June 30).

“We shot this video out in California with The Riker Brothers,” Jurgensmeyer says. “I love the way it turned out and think that it fits the song perfectly! I was very blessed to have written ‘Fast Forward’ with Bridgette Tatum and Jessie G. They are both so talented and I am so grateful that they have taken me under their wing and helped me become the writer I am today.”

After getting his onstage start as a 3-year-old at the Nashville Palace, which his parents used to own, Jet Jurgensmeyer is best known for his co-starring role as Boyd on Fox’s Last Man Standing. His previous single, “Real World” came out in 2018, and he’s made a splash with covers of country hits like this video for Old Dominion’s “Make It Sweet.” Jurgensmeyer also starred in Legends of the Hidden Temple, Nickelodeon's hit 2016 live-action movie inspired by the network's beloved game show, and portrayed a young Jason Bateman on Netflix’s Ozark, and has done voiceovers for shows on Nickelodeon, Disney Junior, and more, including on Bubble Guppies and Shimmer and Shine.

Dee Bradley Baker to Return as the Voice of Olmec for The CW's ‘Legends Of The Hidden Temple’ Reboot

Dee Bradley Baker (Avatar: The Last AirbenderAmerican Dad) will make his return to Legends of The Hidden Temple, more than 20 years since the original series’ first run. Baker is set to reprise his role as the voice of Olmec, the giant talking Mayan head in the upcoming reboot for The CW.

Mega; Nickelodeon

The reimagining of the popular ’90s show hails from Stone & Company, which produced the original series that ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons between 1993-1995. Set to debut October 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, the adult version will preserve many of the original show elements including Moat Crossings, The Steps of Knowledge and the Temple Run as well as the team names such as Purple Parrots, Blue Barracudas, Orange Iguanas, Red Jaguars, Silver Snakes and Green Monkeys.

Every episode is a hero’s journey through a mysterious jungle. Four teams begin the journey, but only one is “strong enough and smart enough” to enter the ominous Olmec’s Temple, avoid the “dreaded” Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure, and return it to its rightful owner.

Nickelodeon's live-action Legends of the Hidden Temple movie

Olmec was a giant talking Mayan head that served as the series’ most recognizable symbol. A fan favorite of the series, the integral character was voiced and puppeteered by Baker.

Olmec made announcements, explained various challenges and asked tiebreaker questions in various episodes of the original series. Baker joins Cristela Alonzo, who will host the reboot.

“When we asked Dee Bradley Baker to return as the one and only Olmec – our giant talking stone head, and he said, ‘Let’s Rock,’ that was all I had to hear…Olmec lives,” said executive producer Scott Stone.

The original series ran in Nickelodeon for three seasons and 120 episodes between 1992 and 1995. Baker previously reprised his role as Olmec for Nickelodeon's 2016 Legends of the Hidden Temple movie.

Based on the original game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, Legends of the Hidden Temple is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon. The series is executive produced by Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox.

WRITER, PRODUCER, ACTOR, COMEDIAN CRISTELA ALONZO
SET TO HOST THE CW’S “LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE”

Reimagined Competition Series to Makes Its Debut Sunday, October 10 at 8pm

July 14, 2021 (Burbank, CA) – Writer, producer, actor and comedian Cristela Alonzo (“Cristela,” “Cars 3”) is set to host The CW’s new fall series LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE, slated to debut on Sunday, October 10 (8:00-9:00pm ET/PT).

"Having grown up on 90’s pop culture and actually being a fan of the original LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE, I am thrilled to be hosting the new updated version of the show,” said Alonzo. “The biggest challenge for me on this show will be trying to simultaneously host it and contain my geeked-out excitement at the same time.”

“When we decided to revisit LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE, we wanted a host with stature who also had the humor of a stand-up and the energy of a camp counselor,” said Scott A. Stone, Creator and Executive Producer. “That’s Cristela Alonzo, she’s perfect!”

Alonzo made history in 2014 when she became the first Latina to create, produce and star in her own network sitcom, “Cristela,” for ABC. During that same year, she split her time between Los Angeles and New York City to serve as one of ABC’s favorite guest hosts on their hit daytime talk show, “The View.”  In 2017, Alonzo made history again when she became the first Latina lead in a Disney Pixar film when she voiced the part of Cruz Ramirez in “Cars 3.” Her first stand-up special, “Lower Classy,” is currently streaming on Netflix.  Alonzo’s memoir, “Music to My Years,” was released in October of 2019 by Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

Additionally, Alonzo focuses on advocacy work, fighting for issues such as immigration, universal healthcare and lower income communities. She works with numerous organizations including Special Olympics Texas and Planned Parenthood, and is also board member of LUPE (La Union del Pueblo Entero) and an advisory board member for Define American. Alonzo is repped by WME, Artists First and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner & Klein.

LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE is taken out of the studio into a “jungle” and scaled up with tougher challenges and much bigger prizes on the line. It preserves the original Nickelodeon series’ favorite elements including: “Olmec” (the giant talking Mayan head), the “Moat Crossings,” “The Steps of Knowledge,” the “Temple Run,” and of course, the iconic team names: “Purple Parrots,” “Blue Barracudas,” “Orange Iguanas,” “Red Jaguars,” “Silver Snakes” and “Green Monkeys.” Every episode is a hero’s journey through a mysterious jungle. Four teams begin the journey, but only one is “strong enough and smart enough” to enter the ominous Olmec’s Temple, avoid the “dreaded” Temple Guards, retrieve a lost treasure, and return it to its rightful owner.

Based on the original game show created by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown, LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon. The series is executive produced by Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox (“Paradise Run”).

CRANSTON, RI, UNITED STATES, July 1, 2021 -- Bruneau & Co. AuctioneersSummer Comic, TCG and Toy auction on Saturday, July 10th, starting at 10 am Eastern time, is shaping up as the firm’s biggest and best Pop Culture sale to date. In addition to the abovenamed categories, the first 52 lots will be from the collection of Eric Baker, someone who’s very well-known and respected in the community.

Mr. Baker was the creative lead of props and set dressing for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World and Disneyland. He was also Nickelodeon’s prop master and fabricator. Several of the props in the auction were fabricated by him during his career with Nickelodeon. Other items are objects he collected.

“I’m honored that we get to handle the collection of Eric Baker, not just because of his unbelievable career but for the fact he’s a longtime friend,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. auctioneer and the firm’s Director of Pop Culture. “So cool to think we’re bringing his creations to market, especially when you consider Nickelodeon props are so elusive to collectors today.”

The Upside-Down Compass of Henry Hudson, used on-screen in Nickelodeon’s Legends of the Hidden Temple TV game show, featured in the show’s 90th episode (1995). Estimate: $300-$500.

The screen-used Frankenstein operation game from Nickelodeon’s popular Double Dare TV show (1991), used in numerous episodes throughout the show’s run, has an estimate of $1,000-$1,500.
