Nickelodeon Shutters NickRewind Retro Programming Block

It appears as if Nickelodeon is discontinuing NickRewind, the network's late-night retro programming block on TeenNick after over 10 years on air.

In mid-January, NickRewind removed most of its shows, opting to air the original iCarly series most evenings between 11 p.m. - 6 a.m., but keeping the NickRewind branding and BUGS/DOGS. However, starting last night (Jan. 31), TeenNick started to use its own branding and BUGS/DOGS during those hours.

TeenNick's evening programming block for Nickelodeon Classics begun life as The '90s Are All That in July 2011. The block then became known as The Splat in October 2015, followed by NickSplat in May 2017, and eventually NickRewind in March 2019.

The news comes as Nickelodeon's parent company, ViacomCBS, is switching its focus on streaming. A vast amount of Nickelodeon's back-catalog is available on Paramount+, the company's streaming platform, with more being added regularly.

Update (2/3) - The NickRewind Twitter page has confirmed that the NickRewind programming block has been discontinued. However, programming is still available on ViacomCBS' free streaming service Pluto TV and paid-for streaming service Paramount+:

For the moment, Nickelodeon is keeping its NickRewind social media pages on Twitter, FacebookInstagram and YouTube channel open for fans, although the latter has started to concentrate on Nickelodeon shows made post-2000, such as iCarly, Victorious and Sam & Cat.

Nickelodeon Issues Message of Solidarity with the Asian American & Pacific Islander Community Following Rise in Hate Crimes

With the recent rise of hate crimes committed against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, Nickelodeon has issued the following statement across their social media channels:

"We stand united against racism, hatred, violence, and the recent rise of attacks against the Asian American & Pacific Islander community. #StopAAPIHate #StopAsianHate," reads Nickelodeon's message.

Each social media post is accompanied with a link to the Stop AAPI Hate initiative, to where readers can find more resources, report a hate crime and learn how they can help stem the rise of these cruel hate attacks.

From Kidscreen:

Rebuilding the Asian American story for next-gen kids

When asked who they would cast as a lead, AAPI kids picked white characters—it's time for kids media to shift the narrative of how children see themselves and others, writes Nickelodeon's Winnie Cheung.

My dreams were shattered the day I realized I couldn’t be a fairytale princess. While playing together, my friend said to me, “You don’t look like a princess; you can be the princess’s friend.” It made sense. I’m Chinese American. I did not have the same hair, eyes, eye color or skin tone as the princesses I admired on my VHS tapes. The Asian American’s role in history has been that of a perpetual foreigner and model minority—in media, we’re the nerds, best friends or objects of desire, leading to stereotypes of Asian Americans in real life that persist today.

To understand race, identity and the American family, Nickelodeon surveyed more than 15,000 kids and their parents between 2019 and 2020 in a multi-phased qualitative and quantitative study called “Shades of Us.”

When asked who they would cast in the lead role of a movie, Asian children chose a white character instead of picking someone who looked like them. Looking further into the data to see if this differed by ethnicity, we saw there was no difference in responses from Black, Hispanic and white children; there is a belief among all kids that lead characters should be white.

In terms of what role Asian kids believe an Asian character should play, their top choices include the smart kid, the nerd and the sidekick. Across ethnicities, kids agreed they would also cast an Asian character as the nerd, reinforcing a stereotype of Asian people.

Is it possible that Asian children today are also having their dreams of who they want to be shattered like my princess dream?

About half of Asian kids (49%) say it’s important to be represented in media, and many disagree (40%) with the current portrayals of their backgrounds and cultures on screen. Asian girls are interested in seeing more female representation in general.

Showing Asian Americans in media is not only beneficial for empowering Asian children, but it can also change non-Asian kids’ misconceptions. If children are given a chance to see Asian people as unique, human and similar to them, moments of empathy and compassion can be ignited. In fact, we found in our “Shades of Us” study that among all kids, self-identity is largely driven by family, friends and the media.

With all of these shared traits in a child’s identity, there can be multiple combinations of relevant stories to tell with specificity. Even within the Asian community itself, there is a plethora of stories around the East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander experiences. Yet in the media, Asian communities are often represented as one whole community, leaving out the nuances of each specific culture.

Telling these stories and showcasing a variety of Asian characters has never felt more important than it does right now when there is one more role Asian Americans have been miscast in—originator of a global pandemic.

In 2019, Asian parents believed Asian people experienced less discrimination compared to Black and Hispanic people. In 2020, however, a significantly higher percentage of parents—across all races and ethnicities—felt that Asians experienced a lot of discrimination, likely the result of harassment and hate incidents related to COVID-19. If we were to field those same questions today, the result would be even higher.

And this is personal. On a walk with my family last year, a group of teenagers passed by and made exaggerated motions to move away from us, muttering “China flu!” We live in a metropolitan city full of diversity, with a large Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) population. Surely they’ve seen faces like ours before?

Over the past year, Stop AAPI Hate has reported nearly 4,000 hate incidents against Asian Americans across 50 states and the District of Columbia. On March 16, eight people were murdered at local businesses in Atlanta, Georgia—six were Asian women.

Change in representation has been growing slowly. Movies and television shows are starting to tell stories from a variety of Asian ethnicity groups. Story themes have also expanded beyond just historical references to more genres like romantic comedies, coming-of-age narratives and stories of loss. There are even stories about Asian princesses.

But there’s more work to do. The potential to counteract discrimination among non-Asian communities could start with a better understanding of what it means to be Asian. Here are some ways to start:

1. Cast Asian leads: Help Asian children feel like they matter by giving them the agency to move a story forward as the protagonist, not just as a side character.

2. Make products (i.e. toys, games, apps) that feature Asian people/characters: Pretend play is a vital activity to a child’s identity development, but if there are no Asian faces in toys, games or digital experiences, Asian children have already lost the opportunity to imagine stories with people who look like them.

3. Tell the untold stories: There are great stories out there already featuring the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, but there are so many more to be shared. Take a leap and consider more far-reaching stories than the ones already being told. Not every Asian story needs to include a dragon or kung fu.

4. Celebrate together: We’re all stronger together as human people. Asian American stories can be interwoven with other experiences. With the rise of children who have more than one ethnicity, stories can—and should—cover more than one culture at a time.

5. Be brave: Stories about Asian Americans in the media industry have been mistold, misrepresented, and at times just completely missed. But we have to try to make a difference by bringing new narratives into the mix to replace the misguided ones that exist today.

Importantly, content and products should be led by or made in collaboration with AAPI team members and experts. Companies should also consider a long-term strategy that is connected to specific goals, and hold themselves accountable.

My role has evolved from hopeful princess to a Chinese American woman looking to change the media landscape. I hope that for my kids, their roles can be whatever they want—to be the princess, the hero, the changemaker, the lead—and at the same time be seen as a kid with similar experiences to all other kids, facing fears, triumphs, setbacks, love and hope.

Nickelodeon and Tongal Launch the 'Nick Creator Collective Project'

Nickelodeon has teamed up with Tongal.com to launch the Nick Creator Collective Project!

Nickelodeon and Tongal are looking for savvy social content creators who love all things Nickelodeon to join their "Nick Creator Collective" - a small and talented group of creators working across different disciplines that will act as an extension of the Nickelodeon team and take turns creating content for Nickelodeon-owned social channels, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., NickRewind, TeenNick, and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Objectives

Can you create a meme faster than Lil and Phil can get into trouble? What about making an Instagram video that even Helga Geraldine Pataki would double tap on? You know, content that might be about a certain boy with a football-shaped head....

If you're a savvy social content creator and a fan of all things Nickelodeon, you might be the perfect fit to join the "Nick Creator Collective" - a new group of content creators working across different disciplines (graphic design, stop-motion animation, motion graphics/editing, and live-action). This group is going to help Nickelodeon create quick-turn social content for the amazing Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., NickRewind, TeenNick, and SpongeBob SquarePants brands. Nickelodeon-wide diversity & inclusion initiatives are another important category of social content that Nick is looking to create, which will span across all Nick brands. The main platforms Nick and Tongal will be focusing on are Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat (in priority order).

If chosen to be a part of this talented group, you'll have access to a continuous stream of projects with countless opportunities of all shapes and sizes across multiple Nickelodeon properties. The initial pilot phase will run approximately six months, and if the program is successful, you'll have an opportunity to rejoin the group.

Here's how it'll work.

THE PROCESS:

1. Several creators will be selected from each discipline (graphic design, stop-motion animation, motion graphics/editing, and live-action). In total, Nickelodeon and Tongal expect the Nick Creator Collective to be comprised of at least a dozen creators.

2. Once selected, Nickelodeon & Tongal will onboard each creator on the different brands, sub-brands, and properties.

3. After getting up to speed, creators with then have access to new opportunities open exclusively to the Nick Creator Collective.

4. For each new content need, the Nickelodeon team will provide a "content order form," which will scope out each creative ask for members of the Nick Creator Collective.

5. Depending on the fidelity (i.e. complexity) and timing of Nick's content need, opportunities will either go directly to a member of the Collective or there will be an ask for creative takes (i.e. treatments) from multiple creators, which Nick will choose between.

6. Take a look at the Menu of Options - this includes a breakdown of the fidelity, timing, and pricing per asset, for different types of asks. For example, on projects with longer timelines, multiple creators from the group will be asked for creative takes. On projects with shorter timelines, Nick and Tongal will go directly to a creator to see if they're available to complete a request. For quick-turn projects, Nickelodeon and Tongal will approach members of the Collective in a round robin manner (i.e. they'll go down the list of creators in order), so everyone has an equal opportunities to complete work. Timelines for these projects will range from a 24-hour turnaround to 4+ weeks.

7. Once Nick selects you to create content, you'll submit the deliverable on the Tongal platform for approval. For longer-term projects with a pre-production phase, Nick and Tongal will let you know what pre-production requirements are required for that particular project, and pre-production approvals will be handled on the Tongal platform as well.

8. Nickelodeon and Tongal expect the pilot of this initiative to last for 6 months and if successful, you'll have an opportunity to rejoin the collective.

Nickelodeon Names Ashley Kaplan as SVP, Digital Studios; Luke Wahl Joins as VP

Nickelodeon has named former Fullscreen Media executive Ashley Kaplan as Senior Vice President (SVP), Digital Studios, and Luke Wahl as Vice President (VP), Digital Studios, reporting to Kaplan. The announcement was made today by Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins and Kelly Day, President of Viacom Digital Studios (VDS), to whom Kaplan will dually report. Both Kaplan and Wahl will be based out of Nickelodeon’s Burbank, California headquarters.

In her new role, Kaplan will lead Nick’s YouTube strategic vision and oversee the creative and editorial voice for digital content creation, as well as development and production of original short-form content exclusively for Nickelodeon’s YouTube and social media platforms.

Wahl will work on the development and production of original short-form content exclusively for Nickelodeon’s YouTube and social channels, with an emphasis on sports-themed content. He will also work closely with the linear development and current production teams to create content that can live seamlessly across the brand’s linear and social platforms.

Kaplan previously served as the SVP, Creative and Production at Fullscreen Media, where she oversaw ongoing production and development of premium content. Earlier, she was VP of Digital Content and Strategy for the Magical Elves production company, and also previously did a stint at Viacom’s Logo channel, launching its digital content department and producing the first online original series.

Prior to joining Nickelodeon, Wahl served as Head of Video at Gear Patrol, a print and digital men’s lifestyle publication and content studio. Before Gear Patrol, he helped launch Sports Illustrated’s OTT service, and did stints as an Executive Producer for Katie Couric’s programming at Yahoo! News, and at AwesomenessTV, the leading digital-first destination for original programming that Viacom acquired last year. He also served as showrunner and co-executive producer for Embassy Row’s TakePart Live on Pivot TV.

The news follows Nickelodeon announcing that Angelique Yen and Eddie Gamarra are joining the network to oversee its burgeoning studio model business, producing content for long-form movie content and SVOD services.

Since VDS’ launch in 2018, Viacom brands’ social video views have grown by 83%, and watch time has increased by 119%, with a global average of four billion views and more than six billion minutes watched each month, according to Viacom. Its more recent slate, unveiled during NewFront in April this year, focuses heavily on influencers like JoJo Siwa, Hayley LeBanc and Anthony Padilla.

Nickelodeon Rewind is already an established brand name for Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon Rewind was originally a collection of DVDs and merchandise that featured classic Nickelodeon television shows such as Clarissa Explains It All, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, and You Can't Do That on Television. After being launched in 2005, Nick Rewind entered the realm of television airings with the "Nick Rewind" programming block that featured on Nickelodeon during the Summer of 2006. Following a hiatus, with the exception of some Amazon DVD releases, the brand was relaunched in June 2010 when a Nickelodeon Rewind feature appeared on Comcast through OnDemand, featuring episodes of The Angry Beavers, Hey Arnold!, Doug, The Ren and Stimpy Show, and Rugrats. The on-demand feature was later added to Verizon Fios, DirecTV and Cablevision. In 2011, Nickelodeon Rewind went mainstream with the release of DVDs through Shout! Factory and The '90s Are All That block of TeenNick.

'SpongeBob SquarePants' Celebrates Oscar Nominees with Parody Movie Posters

The 91st Academy Awards are being held this weekend, and a certain cartoon sponge is getting hyped for them in a pretty endearing way.

Nickelodeon's official social media accounts for SpongeBob SquarePants recently shared several parody posters, which imagine the various characters in the show's ensemble as the focus of Oscar-nominated movies. You can check them out below.

The parody posters are endearing, ranging from a young Patrick Star serving as the inspiration for A Sea Star is Born, to Squidward channeling his best Emily Blunt in the A Quiet Space poster. There's even a take on Marvel's Black Panther, which earned a historic seven nominations at this year's Oscars.

Regardless of whoever ends up taking home a trophy at Sunday's Oscars, it's hard to deny that the awards play a small part in this year's unique pop culture landscape. SpongeBob is earning its own sort of accolade in 2019 as well, with the Nickelodeon show planning a year-long "Best Year Ever" celebration in honor of the show's 20th anniversary.

“The tiny residents of Bikini Bottom have held the world’s attention for a remarkable 20 years and we owe it all to the monumental creator Stephen Hillenburg,” Ramsey Naito, EVP, Animation Production and Development, Nickelodeon, said in a statement. “This anniversary special is a love letter to everyone in the universe of SpongeBob, from the fans across the globe to the incredible creative team, crew and talent who continue to bring these great characters to life.”

SpongeBob SquarePants is no stranger to movie theatres himself, having already starred in two blockbusters and a third movie, The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge on the way, set to be released in Summer 2020. Nickelodeon also recently revealed plans to spin off the characters from SpongeBob SquarePants into their own stand-alone series, specials and feature-length movies.

The 91st Academy Awards will be held Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 8/7c on ABC.

Check out the movie posters below, and tell me which movie you'd watch in the theatre in the comments below!
