BBC Worldwide And Ragdoll Productions Seeking A New Home For The Preschool Series "Teletubbies"; Nickelodeon's Jules Borkent Talks About The Children's Television Market
In the following article from Bloomberg, Jules Borkent, the senior vice president of global acquisitions and international programming for Viacom's children's channel Nickelodeon talks about the kids television market and Nickelodeon's hit animated original series (Nicktoon) "SpongeBob SquarePants":
Teletubbies Seek New Owner as BBC Worldwide Sells Venture
The Teletubbies, the toddler-sized creatures with antennas on their heads, are following Barney and Peter Rabbit down the path to new ownership as the British Broadcasting Corp.’s commercial arm cashes in on a burgeoning children’s market.
BBC Worldwide and Ragdoll Productions decided to sell their joint venture that owns the rights to the Teletubbies and pre- school shows such as “In the Night Garden” and “The Adventures of Abney & Teal,” the broadcaster told Bloomberg News.
The Teletubbies aired on the BBC in 1997 and have since been shown in 120 countries and in 45 different languages. Photographer: Timothy A. Clary/AFP/Getty Images
Entertainment companies Mattel Inc. (MAT) and Viacom Inc. (VIAB) have purchased children characters such as Thomas the Tank Engine and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Teenage in recent years to tap demand for globally known brands, especially in markets such as China and Brazil. Kids’ characters are attractive assets because they generate a new audience every few years, can be easily dubbed and provide lucrative ancillary sales from licensing and merchandising.
“The pre-school market is a new market every three to four years and that audience is a very loyal audience,” said Darren Throop, chief executive officer at Entertainment One Ltd. (ETO), which owns the rights to Peppa Pig, one of the most popular pre-school characters. “These brands transact quickly because people understand there is a long tail on the revenue side of merchandising.”
Mickey Mouse
Though Throop has no plans to seek buyers for Peppa, he said he bid for some characters that were for sale in recent years, declining to identify the targets.
Lunchboxes, sleeping bags and stuffed animals bearing the characters’ images provide revenue to the owner for years. Mickey Mouse, the cartoon character created in 1928 by Walt Disney, remains one of the most popular children’s characters.
“With children’s programs, you’re buying into the brand franchise,” said Nigel Pickard, the U.K. head of Zodiak Kids, the children’s content arm of producer Zodiak Media. “The TV show is at the front but it’s everything that follows that gives it a long-standing shelf life.”
The Teletubbies, four oddball characters known as Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po, aired on the BBC in 1997 and have since been shown in 120 countries and in 45 different languages.
“We have taken the decision with Ragdoll to seek a buyer for our successful joint venture we established in 2006,” Marcus Arthur, managing director for BBC Worldwide’s global brands unit, said in an e-mail. The British broadcaster is seeking someone for the joint venture “to invest in and grow the business,” he said.
Merchandising Potential
DC Advisory Partners, which last year sold the rights to characters including Peter Rabbit, Mr. Men and Paddington Bear for entertainment company Chorion Ltd., is handling the sale for the BBC.
The BBC is one of largest platforms for kids content in the U.K. with its television channel CBeebies targeting pre-school children and its CBBC channel focussing on older ones. Ragdoll will continue in the children’s business by developing new content.
“The Teletubbies changed everything about the way people thought about preschool,” said Pickard. “It’s a heritage brand. I think they are no longer at their peak but clearly in TV licensing they are relicensed and they do drive ancillary revenue for merchandising.”
Brand Power
Mattel’s purchase of Hit Entertainment Ltd. last year illustrates the power of a brand’s licensing and merchandising potential, as the world largest toy company paid $680 million to add characters including Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder and Barney.
Spending on products targeting kids aged up to 4 years has soared in emerging markets. In Brazil, it surged by 28 percent to $528 million between 2008 and 2011, and by 46 percent to $867 million in China, according to researcher Euromonitor International. In the U.K., that figure rose 3.2 percent to $892 million, while it was little changed at $3.3 billion in the U.S.
“The important part now is having the intellectual property of a brand,” said Sander Schwartz, president of kids and family entertainment at FremantleMedia, the production arm of Europe’s biggest broadcaster RTL Group SA. (RTL) “TV is never going to be anymore the principle source of income.”
FremantleMedia’s kids division, whose roster includes shows such as “Ella the Elephant” and “My Babysitter’s a Vampire,” earns a large portion of revenue from distribution of such properties.
Italian Franchise
“Nothing repeats or travels better than children’s shows,” said Schwartz. “They have a very long life and nothing has a longer tail for ancillary revenue.”
Aside from merchandising and TV rights, children drag their parents in droves to the cinema for the latest screenings, which is something Viacom is betting will happen with its expected 2014 release of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Viacom bought the franchise in 2009 for $60 million.
Viacom last year also acquired a minority stake in Rainbow Group, the creator of the popular “Winx Club” Italian TV franchise. In August, DHX Media (DHX) of Canada bought peer Cookie Jar Entertainment, which owns rights including Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake and Inspector Gadget for $111 million to create the country’s largest children's entertainment company.
Declining Prices
The prices for some kids’ content have fallen as more programs and characters flood the market, said Jules Borkent, senior vice president of global acquisitions and international programming at Viacom’s children’s channel Nickelodeon.
Viacom's most popular brand is SpongeBob, which is seen in more than 170 countries on Nickelodeon. SpongeBob to date has generated more than $12 billion in retail sales, according to the company, and the character has more than 37 million fans on Facebook Inc. (FB)’s website.
While Nickelodeon is pitched about 500 pieces of content a year, the station will only sign a handful, Borkent said. “We’re going into companies much earlier as kids are watching more now with iPads, computer and there are bigger audiences.”
As more companies try to break into the children market, it’s key to secure the lucrative global brands, said Stewart Clarke, an editorial director at researcher Informa Telecoms & Media.
“It’s an unbelievably cluttered children’s market,” he said. “But when you get a SpongeBob you are sitting on a billion-dollar property and assets you can sweat for years.”

UPDATE - Nickelodeon UK Fanblog NickUKHub are reporting that the brand new episode of "Life With Boys" that Nickelodeon UK will be premiering on Saturday 24th November 2012, as part of a special Premiere Weekend, will be "Birthdays with Boys", instead of "Bathroom Battles with Boys".
In the brand new episode of "Life with Boys" titled "Birthdays with Boys", Tess' Dad wants to throw her a "Foster Funplex Birthday Extravaganza" for the fifth year in a row but Tess, who is trying not to make her 15th birthday feel like a child's birthday, would rather do something more group-up - more specifically, go to a movie premiere with her friend, Allie. Finding it hard to tell her father the truth, she accidentally makes her Dad believe she would rather go skydiving. Guest Stars: Austin Macdonald as Andy Jacobs.
In the brand new episode of "Life with Boys" called "Bathroom Battles with Boys", each morning there is disagreement within the Foster family over the bathroom. In order to end the quarrel once and for all, Jack decides to set up a private bathroom for Tess. However, Jack has to take a second job in order to pay for the construction costs. Tess feels guilty and wonders if another bathroom is really necessary. Episode Guest Stars: Peter DaCunha as Amusement park kid and Brittany Gray as Flight Attendant.
"Life with Boys" is a Canadian teen sitcom that started broadcasting on Nickelodeon UK in October 2011. It follows Tess Foster (Torri Webster) as she copes with living in a home with just boys: her father, Jack Foster, and three brothers, heartthrob Gabriel Foster, also known as Gabe (Nathan McLeod), studious twin Sam Foster (Michael Murphy), and eight year-old Spencer Foster (Jake Goodman). With the help of her best friend Allie Brooks (Madison Pettis), she pulls through. Each half-hour episode follows 14-year-old Tess Foster as she navigates her way through the turmoil of teen life while living at home with her single, overprotective dad and three brothers. Although Tess adores the four important men in her life, they do have four totally different perspectives. Despite the shortcomings of being the only girl in a male household, the boys can sometimes offer solid advice. Whether it's building up the courage to talk to a boy, dealing with an obnoxious one, or coping with the repercussions of being the only girl on the boys' wrestling team, "Life With Boys" sheds a comedic light on many of life's difficult moments.
"Life with Boys" was created by Michael Poryes (co-creator and executive producer of the Disney Channel shows "Hannah Montana" and "That's So Raven") and Douglas Lieblein (co-executive producer "Hannah Montana").

Disney Planning New "Iron Man" Cartoon; Likely To Spell The End To Nickelodeon USA's "Iron Man: Armored Adventures" Animation
From Digital Spy:
'Iron Man' animation planned by DisneyAlso, from The Hollywood Reporter:
Disney Channels Worldwide's president confirms plans for an Iron Man animation.
Iron Man is under consideration for the animated series treatment at Disney.
Disney Channels Worldwide president Gary Marsh dropped a strong hint that an Iron Man cartoon is in the works alongside the previously-announced Hulk animation, during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
He said: "Two months ago, we launched Marvel Universe on Disney XD, which became the exclusive home for new Marvel television content. We've developed Ultimate Spider-Man. Subsequent to the success of the Avengers movie, we've been developing a new Avengers Assemble.
"We're talking about a Hulk series and an Iron Man series, too. They're going to spend $150 million to $200 million to make these [movie] properties and then half of that to market them."
The Hulk series Marsh spoke of is likely to be Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., sparking rumours that Tony Stark is the next in line for a Disney animation.
The news is likely to spell an end to the Iron Man: Armored Adventures show over on Nickelodeon, which was the result of a deal set up before Disney's acquisition of Marvel Comics.
Disney Channel's Gary Marsh on Tabloid Teen Stars, Marvel and the Junk Food Ban (Q&A)You can read The Hollywood Reporter's full interview with Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channels Worldwide, here on the official The Hollywood Reporter website, HollywoodReporter.com.
The 24-year company veteran opens up to THR about toppling Nickelodeon, finding a TV home for "The Avengers" and having so many kids on set: "It's the parents who really have to be parents."
This story appears in the June 29-July 19 issue of The Hollywood Reporter.
As president of Disney Channels Worldwide, Gary Marsh has every reason to gloat. His Disney Channel rounded out 2011 as the No. 1 kids network for the first time, unseating Nickelodeon's remarkable 16-year run. Thus far this year, Disney is outperforming its longtime rival by 23 percent, with such series as Jessie, Austin & Ally and A.N.T. Farm hitting big. Marsh, 57, a married Los Angeles native whose 6-year-old daughter falls squarely in his demographic, has financial and creative oversight of the company's global kids TV business, which includes more than 100 channels in 169 countries. The Disney veteran, who got his start as renowned director John Rich's assistant before moving to Manhattan briefly to work on political campaigns, sat down in early June to discuss the ratings milestone, new Marvel series and potential headaches that often accompany young stardom.
The Hollywood Reporter: How do you get into the kid mind-set?
Gary Marsh: We spend a lot of time talking to, listening to and watching our demo in focus groups. Sometimes it will be eight to 10 kids in a room, and we'll show them an episode and then sit with them for an hour and a half asking what worked and what didn't. There's also a huge quantitative research effort, which is going out online to 300 to 500 kids at a time with a show and then doing a vote of was this funny or not funny or who is their favorite character.
THR: Tell me something surprising you've learned in one of those focus groups.
Marsh: Back when Gerry Laybourne first joined the company in 1996 [as president of Disney-ABC Cable Networks], we went to a focus group in Chicago and talked to a bunch of kids about the difference between Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Gerry said to us, "We're going to ask them to compare both of the networks to a food, and they're going to say Nickelodeon is like pizza and Disney Channel is like broccoli." Sure enough, that's exactly what they said. It was very eye-opening.
THR: What food is Disney Channel today?
Marsh: I think I can safely say pizza. And I'm excited that we've now taken the pizza role. (Laughs.)
THR: To what do you attribute the steep ratings decline at Nickelodeon?
Marsh: Look, people thought Disney Channel was going to fall off the cliff when Hannah Montana went away because it was such a defining show. There was concern in external corridors and even a whisper campaign internally, and we were so aware of that that we made sure we stacked the deck. We built not one or two but four series that we all thought would take over the lifting, and they have. If you know there's a fall coming, prop yourself up, create a cushion.

US Nicktoons drawn to Planet Sketch

Nicktoons Network has ordered all 26 11-minute episodes of the hit coproduction, which will premiere in spring 2007.
The animated sketch show features characters such as the Street Rappers, the Gnaughty Gnomes and the Parping Ponies, two horses who never manage to hold down a decent job due to flatulence issues.
