Voice Actor Tom Kane Passes Away Aged 64

Tom Kane, the prolific voice actor whose body of work included popular turns as Darwin on The Wild Thornberrys, Yoda on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and as Prof. Utonium on The Powerpuff Girls, sadly passed away on Monday, May 18. He was 64.

Kane died at a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri following complications from a 2020 stroke. He was surrounded by family.

Kane's death was announced by his talent agency, Galactic Productions. “From his unforgettable performances in Star Wars to countless animated series, documentaries and games, Tom brought wisdom, strength, humor and heart to every role he touched,” it said in a statement. “His voice became part of our lives, our memories and the stories we carry with us.”

"Though his voice may now be silent, the characters, stories, and love he gave to the world will live on forever," Kane's rep Zach McGinnis told TMZ. "But beyond the incredible career was an extraordinary man. Tom was a devoted husband and father who, alongside his wife, built a loving family of nine children — three biological and six welcomed through adoption and fostering."

Kane suffered a stroke in 2020 that left him unable to speak or write. He retired in 2021 but did manage to attend the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention in Kentucky in March, reuniting with the Powerpuff Girls cast in his first public appearance in years.

Kane provided the mellifluous voice for the long-suffering valet Woodhouse on the FX animated series Archer, taking the role over from the late George Coe in 2014; played the rabbit Mr. Herriman on Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Lord Monkey Fist on Kim Possible and the smart chimpanzee Darwin on The Wild Thornberrys; and portrayed Magneto and Ultron for Marvel projects.

Born on April 15, 1962, in Overland Park, Kansas, Thomas Kane Roberts started voice acting when he was 15 and attending Shawnee Mission South High School. “I started calling local advertisers and offered my services. It didn’t occur to me anyone got actually paid for it,” he said in a 2010 interview.

Kane graduated from the University of Kansas in 1984 and began at Lucasfilm handling miscellaneous small voice parts for its video games starting in 1996. He took on Yoda for the first time in a game released in 1999.

He continued as Yoda on the TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars in 2003, in the 2008 Clone Wars film (where he also voiced Admiral Yularen) and for many other projects over the years. He also provided the wartime-like narration that kicked off each Clone Wars episode.

“I didn’t work on being Yoda,” he said. “I saw the movies 53 times, so the voice was very much in my head. Everybody tries to do Yoda, not just voice-overs but everybody. I was doing stuff for LucasArts and I was goofing around and reading Yoda lines and what I didn’t know was that Frank Oz [the original voice of Yoda] was directing a movie. They recorded it and played it for George [Lucas], and I’ve been Yoda ever since.”

Meanwhile, Kane voiced the dorky dad Prof. Utonium (and the villain HIM) on Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls from 2016-19. (He first handled the role for a 2008 short.) Kane also lent his voice to characters such as Evil Eric in CatDog, Dean Cain in The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, and Lorenzo Suave in The X's, as well as various characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra (Judge Hotah), Angry Beavers (including Oxnard Montalvo, Mayor and Jack Stagger), Power Rangers S.P.D. and Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man.

Kane also served as the voice of the Walt Disney World Monorail System and was also the narrator of the Happily Ever After fireworks spectacular at Magic Kingdom. He also served as the the announcer for several Academy Award broadcasts.

Kane has also been part of other major franchises, including Magneto in Wolverine and the X-Men and Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, Ultron in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and Robot Chicken.

Additionally, Kane was known for narrating a handful of Disney and Pixar film trailers including Cars.

Back in March, Tom reunited with his Powerpuff costars for a viral convention moment, when Tara Strong (Bubbles), E.G. Daily (Buttercup) and Cathy Cavadini (Blossom) joined him at the Lexington Comic & Toy Convention. He captioned a photo at the time, "Reunited with my girls!!"

"We were SO happy…so emotional to be back with our professor," Strong commented at the time. "It’s been way too long beautiful friend 🩷🩵💚🤍 our hearts are filled with joy to be back together with you & to hear your beautiful voice slowly coming back brought tears to our eyes. You are an angel on earth, always have been."

In the gaming industry, Kane has provided his iconic voice for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Call of Duty: WaW and Black Ops I – III. You can read more about Kane’s work on his official website, tomkane.com.

Actor Roger Clark, who played Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption II, remembered Kane as "one of the first voice actors to approach me" after the video game released, in a social media tribute. "Sad day," he wrote. "May he rest in peace and may his beautiful family never forget his love."

Survivors include his wife, Cindy, whom he married in 1982, and their nine children, six through adoption and fostering.

Following the news of Kane's passing, many off his former colleagues paid tribute to the late voice actor:

Paramount Applies to Register Trademarks For TMNT, CatDog, Real Monsters, Invader ZIM, Angry Beavers and Slime NFTs

Following the success of Nickelodeon's first batch of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), it looks like Nickelodeon will be bringing more iconic properties to the NFT marketplace in the near future.

According to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Paramount Global, the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, has applied to register the trademarks for NFTs inspired by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, CatDog, AAAHH!!! Real Monsters, Invader ZIM, and Angry Beavers, as well as for Slime.

Paramount has applied to trademark Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesAAAHH!!! Real MonstersInvader ZIMAngry Beavers, and Slime under NICE Classes 09 and 42, and CatDog under NICE Class 09.

NICE Class 09 is for scientific and electric apparatus and instruments, downloadable multimedia files containing artwork relating to the field of entertainment authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs); downloadable virtual goods, namely, crypto-collectibles and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), whilst NICE Class 42 is for scientific, technological and industrial services, research and design: software as a service (SAAS), namely, software for transferring crypto-collectibles and application tokens; platform as a service (PAAS), namely, software for accessing crypto-collectibles and application tokens; providing online non-downloadable computer software for enabling the transfer of crypto-collectibles and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

At the time of posting, each trademark application, filed earlier this month (Sept. 2022) is currently pending approval.

The news follows the success of Nickelodeon's first NFT drop earlier this summer in partnership with RECUR, which saw the release of NFTs based on two beloved Nickelodeon properties from the '90s: Rugrats and Hey Arnold!. Nickelodeon also applied to register the trademark for SpongeBob NFTs earlier this year, which is still pending approval.

In addition to RECUR, Funko has also released Nickelodeon NFTs based on retro Nickelodeon favorites as well as Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

Veteran Voice Actor Actor Tom Kane 'Forced Into Early Retirement' Following Stroke

Long-time voice actor Tom Kane has been forced to enter early retirement, a new statement from his family reads. Kane, best known to Nickelodeon viewers for providing his voice to Eliza's chimpanzee sidekick Darwin in The Wild Thornberrys, suffered a stroke at the end of last year and the statement says that's the reason why Kane is no longer able to pursue voice work.

"Because of this stroke my dad has been forced into early retirement," Kane's daughter Sam shared on his Facebook page on Friday. "The damage to his speech center is just too severe. He cannot read well nor get out the words he wants, which is sort of required for voice acting. He has what's called Apraxia which means he has difficulty moving smoothly from one sound, syllable or word to another. Groping movements like with his jaw, lips or tongue to make the correct movement for speech sounds are impaired. Essentially he knows exactly what he wants to say, he knows exactly what's going on, but the words are trapped in his head, and when they do come out, it's usually too slurred to understand."

The statement then points out that Kane is able to communicate with loved ones using non-verbal communication, with Sam joking, "Thank God he's an actor and great at charades."

Throughout his career, Kane appeared in most animated shows one can think of. He was a mainstay in the worlds created by Lucasfilm, with jobs as recent as voicing the narrator on Star Wars: The Bad Batch. He was also one of the primary voice actors for Yoda throughout Lucasfilm's video game offerings.

"I have SO much more to say about this like how many people miss having conversations with him, especially his children and wife. How f--ked up it is that in a split second one of the most talented voice actors ever lost his voice and career," the family statement added. "I'll stop here or else I'll cry and I've already done that like a thousand times this year!! Please feel free to send him letters! I'll be managing this PO Box, please add your email or Instagram handle so I can send pictures to you of my dad receiving your mail! He has also been practicing his signature and would love to start autographing from home!!"

In addition to The Wild Thornberrys, Kane also lent his voice to characters such as Evil Eric in CatDog, Dean Cain in The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, and Lorenzo Suave in The X's, as well as various characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra (Judge Hotah), Angry Beavers (including Oxnard Montalvo, Mayor and Jack Stagger), Power Rangers S.P.D. and Duckman: Private Dick/Family Man.

In the Star Wars universe, Kane is known for his work in The Clone Wars for voicing Jedi Master Yoda and Admiral Yularen as well as narrating the series. He also portrayed Admiral Ackbar in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Kane has also been part of other major franchises including Woodhouse in Archer and Professor Utonium in The Powerpuff Girls, Magneto in Wolverine and the X-Men and Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, Ultron in Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and Robot Chicken.

Additionally, Kane was known for narrating a handful of Disney and Pixar film trailers including Cars, which you can view here.

In the gaming industry, Kane has provided his iconic voice for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Call of Duty: WaW and Black Ops I – III.

And if you are a Disney Parks fan, you may recognize his voice on Walt Disney World’s Monorail System. Kane is also the narrator of the Happily Ever After fireworks spectacular at Magic Kingdom and he was rumored to be a host of Celebrate! Tokyo Disneyland, along with Mickey Mouse at the theme park. You can read more about Kane’s work on his official website, tomkane.com.

Artist Creates Stunning Cover Art for Fictional Nickelodeon Video Games

Throughout the '90s and aughts, Nickelodeon released a wide-range of video games based on some of the network's hit shows, such as Rugrats: Search for Reptar, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom, Nickelodeon GUTSThe Ren & Stimpy Show: Stimpy's Invention and Rocko's Modern Life: Spunky's Dangerous Day, mainly through their partnership with THQ Games.

As these games were released during the early days of home video gaming on consoles such as the Super NES, PlayStation and PlayStation 2, the graphics - although great when released - kind of look a bit dated now, compared to the graphics on today's consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox One.

If you've ever wondered what video games based on iconic '90s animated Nicktoons series would look like today (or even in CGI), wonder no more! México-based designer Carlos Dattoli has unveiled a project called "Fake Covers", in which he designs cover art for fictional games inspired by iconic properties, including many Nickelodeon ones - and they are glorious!

Rocko's Modern Life: Alien Invasion:

The first piece of cover art is for a PS5 game titled Rocko's Modern Life: Alien Invasion, and Rocko's Modern Life looks stunning reimagined in CGI! The game kind of looks like a Rocko's Modern Life x Destroy All Humans x Call of Duty, and there's a lot going on in it, from O-Town being invaded by aliens, Rocko, Heffer and Filbert brandishing sci-fi weapons (and a plunger), Spunky geared up for a war, and the Big Heads (along with some Invader ZIM-esque aliens) in the background!

The Angry Beavers in Quest for River Town!

The next piece of cover art is for a PS5 game titled The Angry Beavers in Quest for River Town!, and again, Norbert and Daggett would look glorious in CGI!

Hey Arnold! The Enchanted Pumpkin

Next up is Hey Arnold!: The Enchanted Pumpkin, a Halloween-themed game for the Nintendo Switch - and yes, you guessed it, it also looks spectacular in CGI! Most characters from Hey Arnold! are represented, including Arnold as Dracula, Gerald as a mummy, Helga as a witch, Harold as Frankenstein, and Grandma Gertrude as a literal cat lady!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Rounding out the Nickelodeon portion of the gallery are two stellar TMNT games: A Funko-themed Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, based on the hit comic series and movie of the same name for the Xbox, and TMNT!, and again, both look Turtley Awesome!

In addition to the Nickelodeon games, Carlos has also created "Fake Covers" for fictional video games inspired by Star Fox (Battlefield), Samurai Pizza Cats (Back in Little Tokyo), F-ZERO (Fire), Robotech (The Fight for Home), Batman (The Night of the Penguin), and like the Nick Games, they're breath- takingly awesome! You can view Carlos' "Fake Covers" project in full, as well as other amazing work created by the artist on his Behance page!

The only downside is that these video games are fake, so we won't be playing them anytime soon - but we can dream! And If

All your favorite Nickelodeon series are available to stream on Paramount+! Try it FREE today at ParamountPlus.com!

Special thanks to Carlos for letting me use his images!

Voice Actor Tom Kane Suffers Stroke

Tom Kane — best known to Nickelodeon viewers for providing his voice to Eliza's chimpanzee sidekick Darwin in The Wild Thornberrys, has suffered a stroke.

Credit: tomkane.com

According to Kane’s family, the veteran voice actor suffered a stroke and is currently still suffering damage that prevents him from verbally communicating. Recovery is possible but his doctor has warned: “that he may not do Voiceovers again.”

The following statement has been released by Kane’s family via the actor’s Facebook page:

"Hi everyone! This is Tom’s daughter, Sam. Our family wanted to share why my dad has been MIA. About two months ago he had a left side stroke that gave him right sided weakness and damage to the speech center of his brain. This means right now he cannot efficiently communicate verbally, nor read or spell. He is still competent and very much himself, but can only get out a few words right now. As many of you might know about strokes, it is possible for him to gain these functions back and we have found him excellent care in Kansas City for speech, occupational, and physical therapy, but for now, we have been warned by his Neurologist that he may not do Voiceovers again.

My dad still remains in good spirits and his extreme stubbornness has helped him already show improvements in speech. He is fully on board with me sharing this and he will see anything you guys post.

Lots of love from our family to yours.

Here are some recent photos of dad ♥️"

How 'Constant Payne' Nearly Became Nickelodeon's First Action Animated Series

Before Avatar: The Last Airbender made its breakthrough, another sci-fi dieselpunk animated series almost became Nickelodeon's first original action animated series.

Currently enjoying a resurgence of popularity on Netflix, Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted as Nickelodeon's first original action cartoon back in 2005. However, not many know that the series was almost beaten to the punch by Constant Payne, a dieselpunk anime-inspired science fiction show created by Angry Beavers writer Micah Wright.

The unaired pilot centers on Amanda Payne, a 13-year-old girl commuting to school with her father, the brilliant scientist Doc Payne. On the way, they are compelled to intervene in an airship hijacking being conducted by Doc Payne's brother, the villainous Welton Payne. Though Doc manages to take out Welton's thugs and save the crew, the evil scientist escapes with the help of his repulsor technology, and the episode ends with Amanda being dropped off for her first class of the day.

In addition to the strong action and science themes that underpin the narrative, the focus on Amanda brings in tropes common to teen dramas, such as wanting to drive, being late to school and gossiping with friends. The central father-daughter relationship was set up as the show's emotional core, while the adversarial sibling rivalry between Doc and Welton could have fueled much of the conflict. Had the show been picked up, it's likely that it would have continued to balance adventure with more relatable themes common to everyday young adult life. Other early 2000s cartoon series such as Jimmy Neutron, Totally Spies and Teen Titans employed a similar combination of thematic elements.

Although only a 10 minute pilot ever saw the light of day, the show's aesthetic is reminiscent of both traditional anime and the futurist movement of the 1920s and 1930s, epitomized best by Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis. The Paynes' home bears a striking resemblance to that film's New Tower of Babel. At the same time, the episode also incorporates more modern fashion, school culture and vernacular, differentiating it from most dieselpunk media, which are typically set in the interwar period between 1918 and 1939.

Constant Payne was never picked up by the channel, and disagreement over the exact reasoning behind the decision persists to this day. Some rumors suggest Nickelodeon did not approve of Wright's attempts to unionize the writers at the studio, while others suggest that, in the aftermath of the contemporaneous September 11th attacks, there was little appetite for a children's show featuring violence, airship accidents and explosions, in particular one controversial scene in which Amanda barely avoids crashing her airship into a two tower building complex. Ultimately, it's likely that the decision not to approve the show involved some combination of both of these two factors.

It's worth noting that Constant Payne's similarly anime-inspired successor, the Avatar franchise, would also incorporate zeppelin-like airships in later seasons, while its sequel series The Legend of Korra made use of a very similar dieselpunk world design. Though there's no way to fully confirm any correlation, its not impossible that Avatar creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko drew some inspiration from a show that was pitched to their employer around the same time they initially drafted their series.

In the years since, the show has never made any public resurgence or found financial backing overseas, suggesting it may permanently join the list of what could have been projects such as a sequel to the female-led Ghostbusters movie, Ridley Scott's The Vatican and Joss Whedon's Buffy: The Animated Series. Had it been aired, the show's combination of futurism, dieselpunk aesthetic and modern sensibilities would have likely led to a very unique animation experience.
