Viacom Reports Results for March 2015 Quarter

Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, has today, Thursday 30th April 2015, reported financial results for the quarter ending Tuesday 31st March 2015, including higher Media Networks revenues and a 7% increase in adjusted diluted earnings per share. The Company's previously announced strategic realignment resulted in a $784 million charge, and is expected to provide ongoing annual net savings of approximately $350 million.

Quarterly revenues declined 3% to $3.08 billion, driven by increases in Media Networks that were more than offset by declines in Filmed Entertainment revenues and the impact of foreign exchange. Excluding an unfavorable 2% impact of foreign exchange, revenues declined 1%. Media Networks revenues increased 3% to $2.45 billion, due to higher advertising revenues and affiliate fees. Absent an unfavorable 2% impact of foreign exchange, Media Networks revenues increased 5%. Domestic advertising revenues declined 5%, reflecting lower ratings. Worldwide advertising revenues rose 4%, reflecting an 80% increase in international advertising revenues driven by growth in Europe, principally from Channel 5, which was acquired in September 2014. Domestic affiliate revenues rose 5% and worldwide affiliate revenues grew 3%, primarily due to rate increases.

Filmed Entertainment revenues decreased 21% to $659 million, driven by declines in television license fees and home entertainment revenues that were impacted by the number and mix of available titles. Excluding an unfavorable 4% impact of foreign exchange, Filmed Entertainment revenues declined 17%. Theatrical revenues declined 10%, due to lower carryover revenues from releases in the prior quarter. Theatrical revenues from current quarter releases benefited from the performance of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

Quarterly adjusted operating income was $822 million, a 6% decline versus the prior year. Media Networks adjusted operating income declined 5%, as higher revenues were more than offset by increased programming and promotional expenses. Filmed Entertainment adjusted operating income was $1 million, reflecting the decline in revenues, partially offset by decreased expenses. Adjusted results exclude the impact of a $784 million charge related to the Company's previously-announced strategic realignment. Adjusted operating income results reflect a 1% adverse impact of foreign exchange.

Quarterly adjusted net earnings attributable to Viacom declined 3% to $467 million. Adjusted diluted earnings per share for the quarter increased 7% to $1.16, which reflects a $0.04 negative impact of foreign exchange.

For the quarter ended March 31, 2015, Viacom repurchased 10.9 million shares under its stock repurchase program, for an aggregate purchase price of $750 million. As of March 31, 2015, Viacom had 397 million shares of common stock outstanding.

At March 31, 2015, total debt outstanding was $13.23 billion, compared with $12.77 billion at September 30, 2014. The Company's cash balances were $306 million at March 31, 2015, a decrease from $1.0 billion at September 30, 2014.

Snoop Dogg To Guest Star In Brand-New Episode Of "Sanjay and Craig", Premiering 5/17 On Nickelodeon USA

ETonline is reporting the very exciting news that Snoop Dogg will be a guest star in a upcoming brand-new episode of Nickelodeon's Emmy-nominated original animated series (NickToon) "Sanjay and Craig", premiering Sunday 17th May 2015 on Nickelodeon USA!


The iconic rapper is lending his signature voice and likeness to the very special episode of Nickelodeon's hit original animated buddy comedy series.

Snoop will play "Street Dogg", a fun, friendly rapper who moves in next door to Sanjay (Maulik Pancholy, "30 Rock") and his anthropomorphic pet snake, Craig ("@midnight" host Chris Hardwick). And while in the suburbs, Street Dogg finds some time to drop “funky, fresh flow”.

In fact, Street Dogg will swap rhymes with Megan Sparkles, Sanjay's over-enthusiastic friend voiced by Linda Cardellini ("Bloodline"). The actress recently told ETonline that rapping with musician was a highlight. "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water" Success Sparks International TV Sales For Popular Nickelodeon Shows

The licensing news website License! Global Mag is reporting the exciting news that the success of Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Animation's "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water" has sparked global interest in the brand's TV series from broadcasters around the globe!


In Europe, French free-to-air (FTA) broadcaster France 3 has bought 50 new episodes of "SpongeBob SquarePants" following the show's launch on the channel in February 2015, while Spain's free-to-air broadcaster Clan has renewed seasons one through three, six and seven.

Across the Atlantic, Canal 13 (Chile), Teledoce (Uruguay) and Vrak TV (Canada) have picked up the full series including the brand-new season nine.

In addition to "SpongeBob", Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has also inked new deals for additional children's content from Nickelodeon.

Canadian pay-TV channel Yoopa has acquired "Dora and Friends: Into the City!" (season one), while Clan in Spain picked up both "Dora and Friends" and "Dora the Explorer" (season eight). In Brazil, TV Cultura has snagged the rights to four Dora specials.

A Russian broadcaster has picked up the rights to "The Legend of Korra" (seasons one and two) while Teledoce in Uruguay is adding 26 episodes of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". Finally, Italy's free-to-air broadcaster Rai has bought the live-action titles "The Haunted Hathaways" (season one) and "Big Time Rush" (seasons three and four).

Nick Cannon Talks About His New Hit Nickelodeon Show "Make It Pop"

It's the final week of season one of Nickelodeon's brand-new musical comedy series Make It Pop, and ahead of Make It Pop's first season finale, premiering Friday 1st May 2015 at 7:00pm ET/PT, Billboard recently chatted exclusively with rapper/actor/TV executive Nick Cannon, the co-creator of Nick's all-new hit series, about the show, his love of "magnifying" sub-cultures and more!:

The rapper/actor/TV exec also teases his upcoming dancehall flick featuring Busta Rhymes, Beenie Man & more.

Nearly everything about Nickelodeon's new show Make It Pop sounds similar to what TV fans have already seen -- including the platform (musical-comedy, just in time for Glee's finale) and the setting (a boarding school a la Zoey 101) -- but its main inspiration is where things get unique. Make It Pop is inspired by Korean pop culture, with executive producers Nick Cannon and Thomas W. Lynch (The Secret World of Alex Mack, Class of 3000) betting on K-pop's colorful and bubbly aesthetic to draw viewers with new episodes every weeknight which has, so far, delivered strong, consistent ratings for Nick's young viewers.

While the audience may be new to the glossy world of Girls' Generation, f(x) and 2NE1, one of its creators is not. Cannon had worked closely with the Wonder Girls on their eponymous TeenNick film in 2012, introducing him to the highly stylized Korean entertainment world. Ahead of Make It Pop's first season finale on May 1, Billboard chatted exclusively with the rapper/actor/TV exec about the show, his love of "magnifying" sub-cultures and more.



Why is the world ready for a K-pop-inspired TV show?

I always say, "America's last to the party." Honestly. It's such a global phenomenon that I've witnessed over the years from traveling abroad. A few years back there was a girl group with a Nickelodeon movie called the School Gyrls, from that there was the Wonder Girls and that's when I was really introduced to Korean pop and thought, "This is amazing." I became a fan of the culture.

What specifically drew you to the culture?

The main reason is the admiration and respect for the fans, how they treat the artist and how they really become this real community. That's the thing that opened my eyes initially. And then when you see the quality in the music and the videos, the imaging and how detailed everything was; the pop-art feel. I thought it was just really cool, the way they presented it. Obviously, we've always had girl groups and boy bands and all that stuff in the states. But to see the detail, the hard work and the dedication in K-pop culture, I'd never seen anything like it.

So far, that mostly thrives online and on YouTube. What was your vision with Make It Pop and how do you make that translate on television?

I would say Make It Pop was inspired by that world, but not necessarily trying to be authentic because, ultimately, at the end of the day we're making a television show for Nickelodeon. I found there were similarities, like the colors, the fun, the music, uplifting stories, all those things were synonymous with the world and I just wanted to focus on all those aspects so, like, "Hey, we can bring all the things that people love about K-pop culture, love about Nickelodeon culture, bring those worlds together, and I think we have a hit show."



What were you looking for when it came to casting? You actually have Sun Hi played by Megan Lee, who was a pop singer in South Korea.

We were blessed to be able to have Megan Lee on the show. I want to say, man, over the course of about two years, I've seen thousands of young girls and actors for this show. To know that we were going to have three [stars]...we were not going to go through this until we have the right group of girls, and we definitely found the right group.

Did you learn anything from working with Wonder Girls?

The Wonder Girls' TeenNick Movie definitely helped. It was originally inspired by that. I was introduced to the K-pop world through the Wonder Girls. Those girls are so amazing. They were so professional, so well-versed in everything entertainment...very stylized, very fashionable, very funny, I wanted to implement all of those things into the show as well. Working with the Wonder Girls was great training for Make It Pop.

K-pop fans can be very defensive and there was a petition with almost 10,000 signatures demanding you cancel the show before it aired. Did you notice any negativity brooding?

It's interesting because while in development, I think there was a press release that went out that I was doing a K-pop show. I would go online seeing tweets here and there about this...I didn't understand why the fans were kind of upset. It intrigued me like, "Why would they be mad about a big show, that's not really even trying to be a K-pop show, but something that's inspired by paying tribute to their world?" because, obviously, they didn't know what the show was about. I could imagine that someone like myself, who's not in K-pop, you hear they're doing "a K-pop show," it wouldn't make you that excited.

But I reached out to a few of the people who were concerned -- that's the beauty of being online and social media -- [I asked], "Why are you guys upset?" And they were saying how much this world and these artists means to them. And I totally respected that. I assured the ones that I actually talked to that this show would do nothing but uplift the culture and pay respect to it... Ironically, since the show has aired, I've seen nothing but positive tweets and everything online, they're already starting fansites and stuff. I'm like, "Yo! We did our job. We did what we came to do."

I'm sure a lot of those fans would like to know, are you a personal fan of any other Korean acts?

I've had the opportunity of working close with JYP [Entertainment] and J.Y. Park, but I probably also would get in trouble if I chose anyone because you know how serious it is! I got to say everything that came from JYP and all of their acts have always been wonderful and the ones I've been supporting throughout the years.

What else are you up to this year?

I'm doing a lot of stuff. In the music space, with Wild 'N Out, we're actually releasing some music from a lot of the artists.

I'm starting photography for King of the Dancehall, a film I'm starring in, directing in and wrote in Jamaica that's about the dancehall culture. Myself, Busta Rhymes, Beenie Man, Ky-Mani Marley, everybody in that dancehall culture because I feel like that's another sort of culture that doesn't have the opportunity to kind of have its time in cinema. You see all these kind of watered-down dance movies, but you never seen one about Jamaican culture.

Sounds like it might be a new-age version of Dancehall Queen.

Yeah, yeah! I mean obviously, I was inspired by everything from Dancehall Queen to The Harder They Come, movies that really pay respect to Jamaican culture. Between the cast and what we're really trying to accomplish, I feel like we're going to be one that people will reference when talking about the world of dancehall.

I feel like I've done that quite a few times, in different aspects of my career. Like in Drumline, shedding like HBCU marching band sub-culture, Roll Bounce, even this thing with what we're talking about with K-pop, the Wonder Girls and Make It Pop. I feel like anytime I get an opportunity to shine a light, to put the middle American magnifying glass on a sub-culture and kind of pay respect to it, I feel like I'm doing my job in entertainment.

Nickelodeon Portugal To Premiere "Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks" On Monday 11th May 2015

Nickelodeon Portugal has announced the exciting Nickelodeon Europe News in the following article from the 'Noticias'/'News' section of their official website, nickelodeon.pt, that Nickelodeon Portugal will start to premiere and show the brand-new CG-animated preschool series "Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks", locally titled "ALVINNN!!! e os Esquilos", from Monday 11th May 2015 at 13:15!:

Nickelodeon Executives Talk About How Gender Parity Has Always Been Part Of Brands' Culture

To celebrate Variety's 2015 Power of Women New York issue, Variety recently interviewed Nickelodeon executives Cyma Zarghami, Pam Kaufman, Sarah Levy and Marva Smalls about how Nickelodeon has always encouraged and led the way for gender parity in the workplace since the channel's launch in 1979!:

Gender parity in the workplace took center stage at the Oscars in March, fueled by Patricia Arquette's impassioned speech during the broadcast, but for the women at cabler Nickelodeon, that issue has been in place since the channel's launch.

In 1980, Geraldine Laybourne became its first female president, fostering a female-friendly work culture while pioneering a slate of such innovative kids' programming as "Rugrats" and "You Can't Do That on Television!" It was under Laybourne's leadership that the then-fledgling Nickelodeon became a top-rated, Emmy- and Peabody-decorated network.

"One of the great things about the number of women in our organization — and we account for more than 50% — is that we actually have never had to say 'hear us roar' because we were all there already," says Cyma Zarghami, president of the Viacom Kids and Family Group. "For the most part our experience has always been very female friendly and that's something we're really proud of."

Pam Kaufman, president of consumer products and chief marketing officer, was hired when she was eight months' pregnant, a scenario that, in spite of women "leaning in" across corporate America, is the exception, rather than the rule.

"I was terrified. I told the person with whom I was interviewing that I was pregnant, and the first thing he said to me was congratulations," says Kaufman, who credits parent company Viacom Media Networks and president and CEO Philippe Dauman for implementing forward-thinking policies. "It is an incredibly family-friendly environment, and it does start at the top. If you're successful and a hard worker and you need to go take care of something (the philosophy) is to go take care of what's important."

An inhouse mentorship program also accounts for Nickelodeon's female-driven success, says chief operating officer Sarah Levy. "Because it's a family brand, as women go through the life stages we have come to see that women are incredible executives," says Levy. "The senior women have mentored the junior women in a way that has made (Nickelodeon) a great place with great opportunity."

Adds Marva Smalls, head of public affairs and chief of staff, and Viacom's head of global inclusion, "It's a culture where the women respect the men and the men respect the women and we're all just looking to hit it out of the park.

"We don't skew for female versus male but we really want that balance. We understand that it takes all those voices at the table in order for us put to best product out for our audience."

To that end, Nickelodeon has long taken pride in providing preschool entertainment with an educational component ("Bubble Guppies," "Dora the Explorer") as well as tween, teen and adult fare on its sister channels like TeeNick and Nick at Nite. What makes Nickelodeon's content stand out, says Zarghami, is the fact that it's primarily "gender neutral."

"We believe kids under 11 shouldn't be so conscious of the gender differences, so we went out of our way to make sure we were boy- and girl-friendly," says Zarghami, citing "girl-empowering" classics like "Clarissa Explains It All" and new series "Bella and the Bulldogs." "Once in a while you'll see a little pink or frills, but storytelling for kids really should be about being a kid, not about being a boy kid or a girl kid. At Nickelodeon your daughter kicks Cinderella's ass."
