Lysol Partners with Nickelodeon for 'Slime School', An Interactive Online Curriculum That Encourages Healthy Habits at School and at Home

Every year 60 million school days are missed by children nationwide due to preventable illnesses like cold and flu, taking away the wonder of learning and lasting experiences they gain in the classroom. To help ensure that children are engaging in the classroom to learn, grow and thrive, Lysol® has officially announced that it is building on its commitment to promoting healthy habits by partnering with Nickelodeon to expand the Lysol Healthy Habits program and introduce "Slime School," an interactive online curriculum that encourages healthy habits at school and at home!

The new "Slime School" will include redesigned lesson plans, animated videos promoting healthy behaviors, and age-appropriate printables for teachers and parents to use with kids. Developed in partnership with the National Education Association (NEA) and National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), with messaging support from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Lysol Healthy Habits program includes 30 interactive and downloadable activities and lesson plans for teachers and parents of children grades K-5, to help them build illness-prevention habits.

As part of the initiative, actor, singer and dancer Alyson Stoner (Drake & Josh, Step Up 3) went undercover as The Substitute to teach kids Lysol Healthy Habits:

"Our "Here for Healthy Schools" program has been made even better! By teaming up with Nickelodeon to create the Slime School, we’re making teaching healthy habits and helping prevent the spread of germs even more exciting. Watch fun videos and teach children through interactive lessons where germs live, and the simple steps children can take to help avoid illness -- so they can replace sick days with Slime Days!"

Lysol has also announced the launch of the 'Here for Healthy Schools' campaign to introduce its mission: curbing the spread of illness in classrooms. To emphasize the importance of preventing the spread of germs and illness and the perpetual abundance of illness-related absenteeism, Lysol is partnering with Sarah Michelle Gellar, actor (best known for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer), entrepreneur and mother of two school-aged children, who understands first-hand the importance of keeping children healthy and in school.

"Growing up with a mother who was a teacher, and now with two school-aged children of my own, I've seen the importance of keeping students healthy so that they can be present in the classroom for valuable lessons and to create lasting friendships," said Sarah Michelle Gellar. "I am proud to partner with Lysol, a brand committed to helping protect children from illness and keeping schools healthy."

In support of its mission, this school year Lysol is expanding its partnership with Kinsa, maker of the first FDA-cleared smart thermometer, with a $1.5 million investment to provide smart thermometers to 1,300 schools across the country. Kinsa smart thermometers and the connected mobile app give nurses a dedicated platform to help parents anonymously understand which illnesses are circulating through schools and the ability to post messages so that teachers and parents can track symptoms and illnesses among students in real time and guide them through next steps.

"At Lysol, we aim to help educate and inform parents and schools so that they can work to reduce the rate of illness in classrooms," said Ferran Rousaud, Marketing Director, Lysol. "The impact of sick days is wide-ranging for both parents and students, and we are proud to continue our efforts to prevent sick days and promote healthy habits among children."

To ensure teachers have the supplies they need in the classroom to combat harmful germs, Lysol is also continuing its partnership with Box Tops for Education – through which it has donated more than $2.5 million to-date to schools across the country over the past three years – and will continue to serve as a sponsor of the WebMD Cold & Flu Map, which helps parents and schools keep their finger on the pulse of cold and flu activity nationwide.

Lysol Enrolls In Nickelodeon's 'Slime School'

Lysol is partnering with Nickelodeon to launch what they call the first-to-market content series —“Slime School” — aimed at keeping students healthy.

Each original animated video, showcasing key healthy habits for the classroom, is paired with age-appropriate printables for teachers and parents to reinforce the lesson.

There is also a printable diploma for "graduates."

The experience kicks off with a promotional social video modeled after Nickelodeon’s series "The Substitute," starring actress Alyson Stoner.

Zenith, serving as Lysol's media AOR, created the holistic strategy to drive awareness and engagement for Lysol’s broader “Healthy Habit” initiative, which is aimed at reducing illness.

The Publicis-owned shop brought together Lysol's parent company Reckitt Benckiser and the kid-oriented network for this school-year-long initiative. Nickelodeon’s reach and ability to scale across digital and social further solidified it as the right partner, says Kim Iadevaia, executive vice president/content, Zenith.

Nickelodeon's "creative lens" helps make "an educational experience fun for parents, teachers and kids,” says Iadevaia.

The effort has expanded beyond initial intentions. Originally, Zenith's content team proposed a single event, which "quickly turned into something more far-reaching, encompassing a total audience versus simply those who attend an event," she says.

Connecting the project digitally "drives the most impact to connect Lysol to the effort to stop the spread of germs and illness in the classroom," explains Iadevaia.

More on the program can be found here.

'Taina' Star Christina Vidal On the Show's Important Legacy

Taina Star Christina Vidal On the Show's Important Legacy

Taina actor Christina Vidal and Soledad O'Brien talk about the importance of representation.

Latinx is the largest and fastest-growing racial minority in the United States. Latinx students enrolled in schools, colleges, and universities has doubled from 8.8 million to 17.9 million from 1996 to 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Yet USC Annenberg found that 47 percent of the top 1,200 movies from 2017 to 2018 completely erased Latino speaking characters. And of the top-grossing 100 films from 2007 to 2018, only 3 percent had Latinx leads or co-leads.

NBC News reported that out of the 30 shows green-lit by the five major television networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and CW — in the 2018 pilot season, only three featured Latinx stars: ABC’s Grand Hotel, the CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, and Charmed.

The question isn’t just why there should be more film and television programming from Gen Z Latinx, but when?

“When you’re young and forming your identity, you’re constantly looking for outside sources to give you reassurance on what you’re doing right or wrong,” Veronica Rodriguez, the story editor for HBO’s comedy series Skate Kitchen tells Teen Vogue. “The lack of Latinx representation can have the younger generation feel limited, judged, stifled, and put into a box that honestly has been defined by people who don’t know much about them.”

From 2001-2002, the Nickelodeon series Taina was one of the first Latinx-led shows on television. The series followed the journey of a Puerto Rican teenager going to a performing arts high school in New York, pursuing her dreams of becoming a famous singer and actor.

The show resonated for many because Taina reflected the aspirational dreams that many young girls have to be someone, and that someone didn’t necessarily have to be a singer or dancer like Taina, but Taina had a passion for something and she wasn’t going to stop until those goals were attained.

The upbeat, catchy theme song stayed with viewers, including its chorus: “You know I cannot wait to see my names in lights / No one’s gonna stop me you’ll see / I will go far / Taina, Taina.”

The series included guest appearances by Shakira, who appeared as herself and showed Taina how to belly dance to her hit “Whenever, Wherever.” The members of 3LW (Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams, and Naturi Naughton) were cast as the senior girl group Blue Mascara that Taina was eager to join, but the group gave her an ultimatum in choosing them or her best friend. Solange Knowles and Kelly Rowland also guest-starred in the series.

Taina’s journey was coupled with struggles in holding onto her Latinx heritage while still defining life with the things she liked about American culture, which was relatable for many Latinx viewers and opened the eyes of non-Latinx viewers to a culture that wasn’t as “other” as they may have thought.

Episodes included Taina failing her Spanish test, and her grandfather growing concerned that she was forgetting her heritage, and Taina not wanting to wear pink or the traditional dress usually worn for a quinceanera.

Despite massive rating success, the network canceled the series after two seasons due to talent issues and business “deals not part of the plan.”

“When I did Taina [17 years ago], I certainly didn’t have the life experiences I have now to understand the power of meshing entertainment and [Latinx] representation,” says Christina Vidal, who played Taina Morales. “As a teenager I was thinking about what the show could do for me. But now as a grown woman, I know such lead roles for Latinx representation carry a responsibility that is so much bigger than one person.”

Vidal is carrying that responsibility into her next starring role, in ABC’s upcoming family sitcom United We Fall, a show that will follow the trials and tribulations of Jo (played by Vidal) and Bill (played by Will Sasso) as they raise two young biracial kids — with unsolicited advice and opinions from Bill’s judgmental live-in mother and Jo’s large Latinx Catholic family.

United We Fall is intended for all ages. “It’s really just about two people, their families, and the different dynamics there,” Vidal says. “Culture is there as a backdrop, but it’s there, and you can’t not see it.”

Journalist Soledad O’Brien offered some food for thought on the topic of visibility onscreen, particularly as someone who’s advocated for diverse storytelling throughout her career. “Why is it that when you have people who are not white on television shows, race automatically is thought of as a focal point?” she asks via phone.

“Why are they not just people acting like themselves who are living in interesting situations and experiencing their lives? No one would ever look at a show with white people and say that they are acting white or that their race is a focus,” adds O’Brien, who was behind the Emmy-winning reporting and acclaimed CNN documentary series Black in America and Latino in America.

Paul DeBeneditts, Nickelodeon’s Executive Vice President (EVP) of programming and content strategy, told Teen Vogue that because representation is an important fabric of storytelling, “networks should serve viewers with meaningful, authentic connections through stories and characters that reflect a world that kids see every day, while opening up their minds to a broader world that they may not know.”

“It all starts with everyone placing value on diversity,” DeBeneditts continues. “From there, the biggest challenge is getting access to these voices and having the voices get access to us. Telling diverse stories stretches across every segment of an organization. It also means putting people in place at the company that will bring these stories to our audience.”

In 2000, the Chicago Tribune reported a television first when Nickelodeon had three Latinx-themed shows on at the same time: The Brothers Garcia, Taina, and Dora the Explorer. This trail blazed a path for future Latinx-led shows, like George Lopez (2002), Ugly Betty (2006), and Jane the Virgin (2014), that created a universal interest for series that didn’t just entertain but also educate about Latinx culture.

The Brothers Garcia had been turned down by networks until Nickelodeon gave the series a green light and made history, airing it in 2000 as the first sitcom in English based on a Latinx family with an all-Latinx cast and creative crew.

“That’s why it’s important to have Latino representation not just on camera but within the writer's room as well,” Vidal says. “There’s a huge gap between experiencing something from the inside and being a spectator. Things can be misconstrued or misunderstood as a spectator who lacks the history behind it. There’s something in Latino blood, culture, and the generation that passes on, and only when you have grown up in that can you properly represent and bring light to that truth.”

However, showcasing Latinx in marginalized ways, and what we stereotypically know to be Latinx, can be just as bad as the lack of representation because it’s representation in a very close-minded way.

The Latino Media Gap gathered data that supported that Latinx people continue to be represented as criminals, law enforcement, hyper-sexual, or cheap labor across TV and film, with 69 percent of maid roles being played by Latinas since 1996.

“Coming of age [stories] are so incredibly painful and beautiful for anyone, but multiply that by a thousand for someone who is searching for some kind of relatability outside of their immediate circles,” says Rodriguez, who received a grant as the 2019 Sundance Institute Latinx Fellow.

When Rodriguez’s non-Latinx content creators ask her about casting a gardener or a maid as Latinx, the first thing she asks is if there are other Latinx on the show, because if not, it’s problematic.

“I choose to show the change that I want without qualifying it by explaining why I’m doing it,” says Rodriguez, who is also a story editor for Disney Channel’s Latinx-led comedy Gabby Duran and the Unsittables. “The second I explain myself, I’m propelling this idea that I have to ask permission to break a stereotype, like if I have a Mexican character who loves sushi instead of tacos.”

Despite Latin American media known for white-washing, it’s also important to see more of an effort of inclusivity of people whose identities intersect with Latinx and other ethnic minorities, like Afro-Latinx. The ABC drama How to Get Away With Murder does this with character Tegan Price, who is seemingly African American, but over time viewers can see her going to salsa clubs and speaking fluent Spanish, without any qualifier about her being Latinx or not.

“It feels freeing to get to a point now and realize that I don’t have to change anything about myself or prove anything to inhabit two extraordinary cultures at the same time,” says Amirah Vann, who plays Tegan. “To be on television and represent that, I hope it frees others to realize that they are worthy, and you don’t need to earn inclusivity in a community because you don’t look like what’s stereotypically known of that culture. You just are.”

There is also diversity within the Latinx community, where a Honduran’s experiences may differ from Ecuadorians, Columbians, Panamanians, Costa Ricans, El Salvadorians, and so on.

Having just one Latino on a show — as an actor or a writer — doesn’t automatically check the box that Latinx representation is accounted for because diversity within Latinx is so vast.

“Just because someone is Latino doesn’t mean they know everything it means to be Latino,” Vidal says. “One of my friends, who’s Mexican, and I share stories about how we grew up and we see so many similarities from our habits and how we cook. But then there are other times when we realize differences, like a word we use in Puerto Rico meaning something completely different in Mexico.”

Although there has been progress onscreen for Latinx representation, there is still an uphill battle as a lot of Latinx-led shows are not experiencing longevity.

Earlier this year, when Netflix tweeted that not enough people watched One Day at a Time to renew the series, a #SaveODAAT went viral in an attempt to change Netflix’s mind. The series follows three generations of a Cuban American family in Los Angeles — a divorced, Army veteran single mother, her teen kids, and mother. Netflix still canceled the show but CBS-owned Pop TV picked it up for its fourth season.

“If social media was what it is now in the early 2000s, Taina absolutely would have continued for much longer,” Vidal says of the series ending after only two seasons. “The audience has so much more power and say than they realize.... For the last four and a half years, I’ve been getting hit on Twitter and Instagram about how Taina should come back.”

Considering the numbers, maybe it should.

Nickelodeon recently debuted The Casagrandes, a animated spin-off from network hit The Loud House which follows the Casagrande family, big, loving family.

Nickelodeon also recently revived the network's beloved animated preschool series Dora the Explorer in the form of a live-action movie, which was released in theatres in August 2019. The film starred a largely Hispanic cast, including Isabela Moner (100 Things to Do Before High School, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Transformers: The Last Knight) as Dora, Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives, Overboard) as Dora's mother, Elena, Michael Peña as Dora's father; Eugenio Derbez (The Casagrandes, Overboard, Instructions Not Included; How to Be A Latin Lover), as Alejandro, a mysterious jungle inhabitant who tries to protect the teenagers from the marauders.

Aylesbury Girl Wins Paw Patrol Little Heroes Awards Award for Courage

A three-year-old girl from Aylesbury is to be crowned a national award winner for her incredible courage in the face of adversity!

Parents across the country were asked to nominate their real-life little heroes in the Paw Patrol Little Heroes Awards, the annual awards ceremony, now in its second year, inspired by the heroic pups from the much-loved CG-animated preschool series Paw Patrol, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nick Jr.

The consumer awards campaign driven by Spin Master aims to honour little heroes across the country who have overcome adversity, shown outstanding bravery or gone above and beyond for a friend in need.

Kaysey’s mum, Kelly-Marie, nominated her for the Skye Award for Courage (Skye is a fearless and smart Cockapoo who loves to fly in her helicopter or with the wings in her pup pack. She tries everything with a backflip, grace, and a smile.), telling the Bucks Herald:

“Kaysey has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 and uses a power wheelchair. It’s incredibly difficult for me as a mum to watch her struggle with many basic tasks and lots of hospital appointments. However, Kaysey never complains about pain and refuses to let her condition bring her down. I am amazed every day that a three year old can be so wise beyond her years and take everything in her stride. She is funny, confident, articulate and everyone who meets her falls in love with her straight away! She is truly the most courageous person I have ever met and I am bursting with pride to hear she has won this award.”

Kaysey and her family will attend an exclusive awards ceremony on Friday 11th October with her seven fellow winners (The Rubble Award for Strength, The Marshall Award for Loyalty, The Rocky Award for Making a Difference, The Chase Award for Leadership, The Everest Award for Kindness and Friendship, The Zuma Award for Being Helpful, and The Ryder Award for Kindness to Animals) at The Park Plaza Hotel Westminster Bridge, where the winners will enjoy a two-night luxury stay.

The weekend will include the chance to meet some of their favourite PAW Patrol characters and all the winners are also being treated to an exclusive VIP shopping event at Hamleys toy store on the Sunday morning, including vouchers so they can pick out their favourite goodies before the store opens!

Finally the winners will receive tickets to Nickelodeon Land at Blackpool Pleasure Beach or Nickelodeon Adventure at intu Lakeside and Gloworm Festival next summer!

Daniel Thompson, Senior Marketing Manager, Consumer Products at Nickelodeon added: “We want to thank everyone for taking the time to write about all their little Heroes because every single one of the entries was special – we would have loved for everyone to win.”

Congrats Kaysey! :)

Each of the eight awards is based on a heroic pup from the much-loved Nick Jr. TV animation produced by Spin Master Entertainment.

Kaysey's mum, Kelly-Marie, says:

"Kaysey has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 and uses a power wheelchair. It's incredibly difficult for me as a mum to watch her struggle with many basic tasks and lots of hospital appointments.

"However, Kaysey never complains about pain and refuses to let her condition bring her down.

"I am amazed every day that a three year old can be so wise beyond her years and take everything in her stride. She is funny, confident, articulate and everyone who meets her falls in love with her straight away!

"She is truly the most courageous person I have ever met and I am bursting with pride to hear she has won this award."

The eight winners were presented with their awards at an exclusive awards ceremony generously hosted by The Park Plaza, Westminster Bridge, where they enjoyed a two-night luxury stay.

During their stay, the children received their trophies, medals and certificates from TV favourites Nigel Clarke and Naomi Wilkinson and also got to meet their favourite Pups!

The two-hour celebration included treats such as face painting and balloon modelling, and all the children joined in the action-packed party games including the famous Pup Pup Boogie!

The delicious tea was full of PAW Patrol inspired goodies including decorated cakes and PAW print chocolates all specially created for the occasion by the Park Plaza chefs!

They were then invited to an exclusive VIP shopping event at Hamleys toy store in Regent Street, where they met the PAW Patrol characters and more stars who turned out to help celebrate the children's achievements. All the winners enjoyed a once in a lifetime moment when they helped to open Hamleys!

In addition to the fun-packed weekend, all winners also received tickets to Nickelodeon Land at Blackpool Pleasure Beach or Nickelodeon Adventure at intu Lakeside and Gloworm Festival next summer!

Jo Thompson from Spin Master, the global entertainment company who created the awards, commented:

"It was such a privilege meeting all the winners and their wonderful families and a joy to see all the children having so much fun at both the party and the visit to Hamleys.

"We'd like to thank all of the PAW Awards partners for helping us to make this such a special and truly memorable weekend."

Charlotte Yates, also from Spin Master, and who sat on the panel of judges said:

"We were overwhelmed with all of the entries, and it was a tough choice, but these eight winners stood out for us in the end."

Daniel Thompson from Nickelodeon added:

"We want to thank everyone for taking the time to write about all their little Heroes because every single one of the entries was special - we would have loved for everyone to win."

Parents who have a little hero in their life and would like to enter the next PAW Patrol Awards can visit www.pawawards.co.uk to register their interest and receive notification when entry opens again!

Nickelodeon Fan Gets Dream Job as New Viacom Philippines Executive

MANILA -- “I’m having my second childhood (now),” enthused Jacque Ruby, head of sales, Philippines for Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), as he described what he calls his “dream job” with the company that owns everybody’s favorite kids channel, Nickelodeon!

Jacque Ruby, head of sales, Philippines for Viacom International Media Networks, with 'The Thundermans' actress Kira Kosarin during the recent SlimeFest Asia event.

Coming from another cable channel where he had worked for three years, Ruby considers it a career move to join VIMN. “I’m a big fan of Nickelodeon,” admits Ruby, who got on board just last June 3.

“It has been a very busy three months for us,” Ruby said. “When I got on board, we did a ‘Pet’s Day Out,’ an event dedicated to kids and their pets; held our ‘Nick Takes Over Your School’ school tour which promotes sportsmanship; and welcomed international and local stars for the first-ever ‘SlimeFest’ in Asia. This year, ‘SlimeFests’ were also held in the US, Germany, UAE and will next go to the UK.”

Ruby was really excited about Nickelodeon’s recent “SlimeFest” in Manila, which turned out to be a huge success with local fans and sponsors alike, reflecting the popularity and strength of the brand.

YouTube star Jannine Weigel headlined the music performances, joined by Nickelodeon’s The Thundermans actor Kira Kosarin, rising pop star Carlie Hanson, 11-year-old rapper Alex Bruce, hip-hop dance troupe Philippine All-Stars and popular local band IV of Spades.

“In the Philippines, Nickelodeon was the number one kids’ channel in June and July 2019,” Ruby revealed to ABS-CBN News. “SlimeFest’ is our way of saying ‘Thank you’ to our fans by giving them the opportunity to experience the fun and energy of the Nickelodeon brand, extending it beyond what they see on screens.”

A day before the event, Ruby guested on ABS-CBN’s morning show, Umagang Kay Ganda, with Nickelodeon’s popular Paw Patrol mascot, Chase. “The reception to Chase was overwhelming,” Ruby said proudly.

Fans who attended the “SlimeFest” also had the chance to meet Chase, along with beloved characters from the hit Nickelodeon shows SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TNMT).

“Coming up next, we have our Halloween-themed Takotown event that will take place on October 31 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City,” Ruby said.

Takotown is a continuation of the "Best Year Ever", Nickelodeon’s year-long SpongeBob 20th anniversary celebrations. Themed around three SpongeBob Halloween episodes, Takotown is a day when fans can look forward to a fun-filled day with character appearances, fringe activities, activity booths and games onstage.

The activities that Nickelodeon has in store for its followers excite Ruby endlessly. "SpongeBob marks its 20th anniversary this year and it’s a year-long celebration,” he announced. “Next year, Dora will turn 20, while TNMT is now on its 35th year.”

Ruby was actually a collector of Nickelodeon’s popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles long before he was offered to work for VIMN. To date, he has more than 300 figures in his collection.

These TNMT characters include Triceton Warrior, Arnold Bernid “Casey” Jones 1997, Leonardo in his pipe, the soccer kicking Raphael 1993, Mutating Armadon, Mikey Turtflightal, Mondo Gecko, Napoleon Bonafrog and Karai Serpent.

“Now, I’m beyond the turtles, but even the rare characters,” Ruby granted. “I’m an adult collector of 1980 and 1990 figures. Their value increases. I am a toy picker who looks for the rare ones, those hard-to-find figures. The minute I see one, I immediately order it. I know their value increases. Recently, I received my shipment of five figures of TMNT from Davao.”

At home, Ruby has a “man-cave” with a huge collection of TMNT figures. Growing up, Ruby was a fan of He-Man, Voltes V, Mazinger Z and Daimos.

He also started collecting vintage toys from He-Man.

“I have an altar of toys in the house,” Ruby offered. “I see them not as toys or figures, but assets. They appreciate. Their value increases. My kids are so embarrassed. They ask me, ‘Daddy, why do you have to collect all those (figures)?’ They cannot understand.”

Ruby’s two daughters – Claire, 16 and Chloe, 10 – are proud fans of Nickelodeon characters. “I read Dora books to my eldest, Claire, when she was younger. Chloe adores SpongeBob and The Thundermans.”
