Abortion Travel Costs to Be Covered by Paramount, Netflix, Disney, Hollywood

Paramount, Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Meta and More Media Companies to Cover Employee Travel Costs for Abortions After Roe v. Wade Overturned

Abortion right activists gather outside the Supreme Court in Washington, Friday, June 24, 2022. The Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years, a decision by its conservative majority to overturn the court's landmark abortion cases. (AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana). AP.

Paramount, Disney, Netflix, Comcast, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony, Meta and several other major media and entertainment companies have said that they will cover travel costs for employees seeking abortions after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

In the wake of the ruling, Disney reached out to employees on Friday (June 24) to stress that they recognize the “impact” of the Supreme Court’s decision and “remain committed to providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care” for all Disney employees and their families, which includes family planning and reproductive care, “no matter where they live,” an internal source told Variety. For Disney employees unable to access a medical service, including abortions, in one location, they have a travel benefit that allows for “affordable coverage for receiving similar levels of care in another location.” Walt Disney World, one of the company’s major theme parks is located in Orlando. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has already moved to implement abortion restrictions that limit access to the procedure.

Netflix said it offers employees and their dependents up to $10,000 in travel reimbursement for cancer treatment, transplants, gender affirming care, or abortion through its plan, while Warner Bros. Discovery said it has expanded its healthcare benefits to cover employees who must go to other states to access abortion and reproductive care. In a memo, the company’s chief people and culture officer, Adria Alpert Romm, wrote, “our number one priority is the wellbeing, health and safety of our employees.”

And other companies offer similar protections. Variety has confirmed that Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, has a travel benefit that covers employees’ medical services and procedures that aren’t available near an employee’s home. Like Disney, the company also maintains a theme park in Florida.

Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish and chief people officer Nancy Phillips sent a memo to staff on Friday, obtained by Variety, confirming the company’s intentions to cover travel costs for employees seeking abortions, writing, “Reproductive health care through company-sponsored health insurance, including coverage for birth control, elective abortion care, miscarriage care and certain related travel expenses if the covered health service, such as abortion, is prohibited in your area.”

In a memo from Google’s chief people officer Fiona Cicconi, the company confirmed that employees can apply to relocate “without justification,” allowing those in states where abortion is outlawed to move to states where it is legal.

A Meta spokesperson said the social media giant will offer travel reimbursements, but couched that by stating “to the extent permitted by law.” That’s notable because some states that are instituting abortion bans could try to find ways to legally restrict people from traveling to other states for the procedure.  “We are in the process of assessing how best to do so given the legal complexities involved,” the spokesperson said.

Sony employees in the U.S. receive reimbursement for travel if it’s required to access healthcare services available under its health plan, which includes reproductive healthcare, a source has confirmed. Sony Music Group and Live Nation are known to have insurance policies that provide reimbursement for travel if it is required to access healthcare services, including reproductive healthcare services. Live Nation posted the following message pledging to cover travel expenses for “employees who need access to women’s healthcare services outside their home state”:

The Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Institute, which has staff across the country and an office and the annual festival in Utah, announced several weeks ago that it has augmented its healthcare benefits to include covering travel expenses. Utah is one of the states expected to implement abortion bans following the court’s decision.

Several publishing companies also weighed in on the momentous decision. BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti told staffers that the company will provide a stipend for anyone residing in the 13 states with triggering abortion ending laws to cover the cost for travel and expenses to other states where they can have the procedure. “The process around this will be completely confidential,” Peretti wrote.

Condé Nast CEO Roger Lynch said in a note to his staff on Friday that the company has “made enhancements to our U.S. health benefits to assist covered employees and their covered dependents in obtaining access to reproductive care regardless of where they reside. Employees who need abortion, infertility or gender-affirming services who cannot obtain that care locally are now eligible for reimbursement on travel and lodging.”

APA CEO Jim Gosnell sent a note to staff saying the company would “include coverage for employees and their covered family members who may need to travel in order to access a range of medical procedures, including family planning and reproductive health.”

Some Hollywood companies did not respond to a request for comment on the decision, while others, such as Amazon and Lionsgate, said they did not have a statement at this time.

The final Supreme Court opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, fully repudiates the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights. It also effectively strikes down the 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey that largely maintained the right established in Roe.

Avatar Aang Meets Spider-Man In AI Art

Avatar Aang and Spider-Man become friends in some AI-generated art that imagines an unlikely Nickelodeon x Marvel team-up using the DALL·E mini program.

Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender and Marvel’s Spider-Man come together as Aang meets a cartoon-y Peter Parker in some AI-generated art. Audiences were first introduced to Avatar Aang in 2005 via the widely adored Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Zach Tyler Eisen voiced the young Avatar as he embarked on a perilous journey to end a 100-year war. Avatar: The Last Airbender sees him struggle with the overwhelming title and power placed upon him too young, but he thankfully doesn’t have to bear this burden alone as his ever-expanding group of friends are often right behind him when facing danger. Similarly, Marvel’s latest Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland) has been supported through each challenge by his friends, family, and mentors, as seen recently with the blockbuster hit Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The anime-inspired cartoon has gained revitalized interest with audiences following the announcement of three new Avatar movies from Paramount’s Avatar Studios and Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

The live-action show has pulled in some of Marvel’s alumni for its Fire Nation cast, starting with new Fire Lord Ozai actor Daniel Dae Kim, who appeared in 2003’s Hulk and 2004's Spider-Man 2. Also included in this list is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor Dallas Liu, who portrays the new live-action Prince Zuko.

Another Marvel-Avatar match-up is imagined as The Last Airbender’s Aang and Spider-Man meet. An unlikely interaction between these characters occurs in some AI-generated art. The popular program DALL·E mini was given the prompt “Spider-Man meets Avatar Aang” and created a series of pictures. These images range from sweet and wholesome to somewhat eerie thanks to the the faceless depictions of the familiar heroes. Check out the images below:

Using the DALL·E mini program has become something of a trend as people can create fun images with ease. This is a particularly intriguing concept to film and TV fanatics who are now able to see their favorite characters interacting regardless of the universe they originally appear in. The results are hilarious as the situations are usually outlandish, and the images often come out looking slightly incorrect, as seen in the above pictures.

While this collaboration between Spider-Man and Aang is surprising, there is some key commonality between the characters. Aang’s biggest obstacles are often those that put a strain on his strong moral compass, like when the previous Avatars told Aang that he must kill Fire Lord Ozai, which clashes with his entire belief system. Similarly, Spider-Man always strives to do the right thing. No Way Home saw Holland’s Spider-Man struggle to keep his normally staunch moral compass as he was faced with threats like never before. Given that Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender are completely separate franchises, it’s unlikely that these characters will ever interact in their canons, but it’s interesting to imagine how they might work together with fun images like these.

Wild TMNT Theory Possibly Reveals The Secret Meaning Of The Turtles' Weapons

A wild fan theory gives new meaning to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' weapons, detailing a story of family and one father’s love for his sons.

The weapons of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are just as much part of their identities as their color-coordinated masks, but a wild theory reveals there may also be a secret meaning to them. Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, the four reptilian brothers have been evolving for almost four decades. Now a long way from their humble comic origins, they've taken on new personalities, faced countless advisories, and become more complex than perhaps one would expect from a title like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

First published by Mirage Studios in 1985, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic told the story of Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, four ordinary reptiles mutated by biohazardous ooze. Adopted by a rat named Splinter, the brothers trained to be skilled martial artists to combat the Shredder and avenge the death of Splinter's late master. Originating as a superhero parody, TMNT outgrew its original pages to become an indelible part of pop culture. Having starred in everything from cartoons to movies and even live concerts, the mutant turtles have had several incarnations and retellings, but, through it all, they're still recognizable as NYC's iconic ninja protectors.

A parody of Daredevil's Stick, Splinter is usually portrayed as a wizened and demanding but nurturing father. Whether avenging his past or protecting the future, Splinter knows the Shredder must be stopped - and trained his adoptive sons in combat accordingly. With the turtles' weapons themselves as distinguishable as their multi-colored masks, one wild theory (Reddit via Twitter) suggests Splinter gave these differing weapons to his sons to reflect their personalities and teach them some of the greatest lessons they had to learn about themselves. Here's the secret meaning of the turtles' weapons explained.

Raphael's Sais

Sometimes described as "cool but rude" by the '80s cartoon adaptation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Raphael has a temperamental nature that often sees him trying to solve his problems with his green fists as much as his aggressive words. Raphael's short-tempered outbursts, his competition with his brother Leonardo, and general cynicism had often put him at odds with the other turtles. However, despite how volatile Raph can be, his weapons, twin sai, don't exactly match his personality.

While often mistaken as daggers, sai carry a far more passive history. Once used by law enforcement in Okinawa, they acted more as blunt weapons than blades used to subdue criminals rather than execute them. Additionally, while they can be used to restrain enemies, sai are most often used as defensive weapons as much as they are offensive ones, able to deflect blades and disarm opponents with their hand guards. According to the theory, Splinter taught Raphael to use twin sai to teach him patience, discipline, and to use less extreme methods when fighting crime - lessons the hot-headed reptile seemed to learn when he defended his friend and confidant Casey Jones, who was once even more violent and impatient than he was. Rather than kill the vigilante, in many versions, Raphael helps pass on Splinter's wisdom and techniques, steering Casey away from a violent path. In this way, Raphael's sai represent more than a weapon against Shredder; they're tools to help protect and redeem, as well as Splinter's way to teach patience to his adopted son considering how much training sai take to master their various techniques.

Michelangelo's Nunchaku

Known for his catchphrase of "cowabunga," Michelangelo is the most optimistic and easy-going of the group. Lighthearted and easily distracted, he has many hobbies ranging from art and cooking to video games, skateboarding, and collecting superhero comic books. Michelangelo in many ways remains true to his name and a Renaissance man at heart, but his immaturity and laidback attitude also reflect his shortcomings as a warrior. It is initially surprising, then, that the youngest and most scatterbrained turtle wields nunchaku.

Used to improve agility and stance, many consider the nunchaku as training weapons. Popularized by actor and famed martial artist Bruce Lee, nunchaku are widely used across multiple martial arts styles and have been adapted for different forms of combat over the years. According to the Twitter theory, because Mikey's weapons are known to injure their users easily, Splinter gave him his nunchaku to teach him to focus and take his training more seriously. Splinter acknowledged Mikey's shortcomings in the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, where he notes that he is the son with the most "raw talent" but fears his immaturity and inability to focus will keep him from reaching his full potential. It makes sense, therefore, that the youngest ninja turtle, Michelangelo, would wield a student's weapon, a tool that challenges him to be more aware and gives him both the metaphorical and literal smack when his attention shifts away from the nunchaku.

Donatello's Bō

As the turtle who values intelligence, Donatello tends to gear his acumen toward science and technology. Across multiple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series, Donnie is shown to be the brains of the four brothers and responsible for many of their incredible contraptions, including gadgets, tools, and vehicles. However, Donatello's curiosity, reliance on technology, and love of science can sometimes dangerously complicate things. For a turtle who can predict, calculate, and understand some of the most advanced concepts in their universe, it's odd that a simple bō is the weapon he's shown wielding.

With no, bells, whistles, or complex mechanics behind them; the bō staff is explained simply as a stick weapon used in the art of self-defence. Often taught to be "an extension of one's limbs," it is very effective in disarming and defeating opponents to those who know how to wield them. Historical accounts claim that some of the staff were tools made into weapons by farmers to protect themselves when weapons became banned in 15th century Japan. The theory reflects this by suggesting Splinter gave Donatello abō staff to teach him that innovation doesn't always come from the machines you create but from learning to get creative with what you have. Additionally, it could be a method of breaking his reliance on his complex gadgets. Splinter lamented this reliance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation when Donatello modified his bō with technology, annoyedly noting: "There was a time when ninjas fought with wooden staffs." For Donatello, the staff is a lesson that intelligence isn't always about what you create but how you solve the problems you are faced with.

Leonardo's Katanas

Designated as the leader in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo is usually the most level-headed and mature out of his brothers. Taking his role seriously, he's also shown at times to be the most moral and responsible. However, despite his reputation and portrayal, Leonardo was trained to use perhaps the most lethal weapons given to the four brothers by Splinter, the two katanas he carries on his shell.

While many of the turtles' other weapons supposedly had their historical origins as modified farming equipment, the katana is a bladed weapon purely associated with combat for centuries. A symbol of a samurai's status and spirituality, the katana are also considered by historians to be some of the finest blades ever crafted. Once believed to be among the most dangerous weapons in the world, there's no denying the katana's lethality. According to the theory, despite Raphael's desire for the role, being a future leader and mentor puts Leonardo in an unenviable position that may force him to make hard decisions that challenge his moral code. Splinter giving Leonardo katanas supposedly reflects the choices he must make to protect lives and in the hope that he'll only take them when necessary.

Splinter Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When it comes to Splinter, the character has had different origins depending on the TMNT adaptation. Sometimes the pet rodent of ninja Hamato Yoshi who sought revenge for his owner's murder, or other times, reimagined as Yoshi mutated into a rat - Splinter is always the turtles' adoptive father and mentor, as well as Shredder's arch-nemesis. A demanding taskmaster and a loving father, there's more to Splinter's martial arts training than his war against the Shredder.

Splinter loves his sons but knows he won't always be there to care for them. In the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, the aging mutant acknowledges: "Death comes for us all…" and in his case, it's an ominous warning that became fulfilled multiple times in the comics and Nickelodeon's 2012 animated series. Splinter knows that beyond the sewers there is a dangerous and unforgiving world full of aliens, mutants, supervillains, and of course, human beings who he feels will struggle to understand creatures like the turtles. In this way, the turtles' training and the lessons they learn aren't only to stop Shredder's armies; it's to carry on the fight after Splinter is gone, realize their true talents as ninjas, and above all else be there for each other, as well as the people they protect. As Splinter once said: "Help each other, draw upon one another, and always remember the power that binds you."

This TMNT weapon theory appears right on the nose and very grounded for a series that features extradimensional conquerors from Dimension X, mutants, and dragons, among other things. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a series that's come a long way as its stories, characters, and audiences' understanding of them evolved. For four pizza-loving ninja turtles mutated by an ooze, as much fun as there is in the concept, there are also stories about family, conflict, and what it takes to unlock inner potential which elevate this new TMNT theory to another level entirely.

iCarly Star Miranda Cosgrove Teases Freddie and Carly Endgame Romance

"They just make sense!"

iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove has opened up about a potential Freddie and Carly romance saying: "They just make sense!"

The first two seasons of the rebooted series are now available on Paramount+ and fans of the show have long hoped for a romance between Carly and Freddie and even affectionately refer to them as "Creddie."

Speaking to Digital Spy, Cosgrove explained that Freddie (Nathan Kress) has spent years "pining for Carly" and that he was always ready for a relationship with his friend, especially now after two divorces.

The Nickelodeon star described how the best friends have both had failed relationships in their adult lives and that their bad luck in love might suggest they would work well as a couple.

"He hasn't had a lot of luck in love and Carly hasn't had very much luck in love either. So a part of me, they just make sense!

"A part of me thinks they're best friends, they know everything about each other, they already love each other," said Cosgrove.

In the original series finale, the pair shared a kiss before Carly moved to Italy, but in the reboot it's clear that nothing long-term came of it and they had both since unsuccessfully moved on with other partners.

"But it's been 11 years since they have tried to revisit the idea of being together. I think that potentially it could be a really good relationship, the two of them together," she added.

Cosgrove also thinks that Freddie has done his fair share of chasing Carly and it is now her turn to approach him.

"I think Carly would have to be the one this time that comes around and realises that she loves Freddie," she said. "I don't think he's gonna put himself out there again! He did it too many times, it's her turn."

The first two seasons of iCarly are available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S., with the first season available as a boxset on Paramount+ UK & Ireland. Try it FREE at ParamountPlus.com!
