Seth Rogen Debuts First Look at ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ at CinemaCon 2023

Rogen helped debut exclusive footage of the film premiering on Aug. 4, marking the first time audiences anywhere got an extended look (and listen) featuring the starry voice cast: "I love these characters."

There are more than 4,000 attendees this year at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and everyone who entered through the Caesars Palace lobby saw the same sight: four statues accessorized with bold-colored eye masks and skateboards propped at their feet. There was no mistaking the reason as the boards boasted the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem title and release date of Aug. 4, 2023.

Consider it a clever tease from the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies’ marketing departments and a wink that the studio could possibly deliver some Turtle Power during its presentation on Thursday morning (April 27). That’s exactly what happened inside the Colosseum as the Turtles inspired the opening of Paramount’s presentation, which kicked off shortly after 10 a.m.

A DJ, who was placed at stage left inside a booth outfitted with neon green lighting, blasted A Tribe Called Quest’s “Can I Kick It” as 16 dancers took the stage (some of whom crawled out of a makeshift sewer). Animated footage of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles played on the Colosseum’s big-screen that was in sync with the beat of the music. After their short performance, that also featured a skateboarder rolling across a mini half-pipe, Chris Aronson crawled out of one of those makeshift sewers carrying a pizza box. Paramount’s president of domestic theatrical distribution then handed out slices to the front row while wearing an orange TMNT-approved eye mask.

After Paramount boss Brian Robbins followed Aronson, he then introduced Seth Rogen who flew in for the festivities. “Hello, CinemaCon,” he said as he stepped into the Colosseum lights. “It’s a big stage. Seems unfair to ask studio executives to fill a stage designed for the most charismatic humans on the planet. They built this for Adele!”

He also took a humorous jab aim at Aronson for rising up on stage from the sewer display. “There was something appropriate about seeing a movie executive emerge from the sewers,” said Rogen. “That’s where I thought they came from. It’s not actually the first time I’ve seen an executive crawling out of a sewer at CinemaCon.”

Rogen then got serious by taking a brief walk down memory lane and sharing his personal history with the franchise. He said he’s been watching it since the 1980s and when the first movie came out in 1990, he was 8 years old and seated in the theater on opening weekend. “My obsession just grew.” He said his father even bought him a pair of nunchucks and he ended up cracking his head open with them, “Nunchucks are a bad weapon, they make no sense,” he quipped. “Suffice it to say, I love these characters. They were weird, funny, brave, noble and smart.”

"We finally made a movie where, if you show this to your children, you're not a terrible parent," Rogen said knowing a lot of his movies have been the opposite of family-friendly. He also emphasized that this movie will lean into the teenage element.

In crafting the film, he said the TMNT team leaned into the teenager element as they thought “what if we cast actual teenagers and let them record together and play together and capture their insane teenage energy and that’s exactly what we did.” He added that the actors “said so many insane things that we couldn’t use” but they were able to capture what it actually feels like to be a teenager. “It’s really, really impressive. Get ready to see green in every sense,” Rogen added, pointing out the fact that he dressed for the occasion (in Dzojchen). “Come on, did you notice?” He also mentioned that the turtles will talk, bicker, and act like actual teens in this film.

The green-clad creative guru then helped debut exclusive footage (not yet available to the public), marking the first time audiences anywhere got an extended look (and listen) featuring the starry voice cast, including the mutant nemeses such as Rogen (Bebop), Hannibal Buress (Genghis Frog), Rose Byrne (Leatherhead), John Cena (Rocksteady), Jackie Chan (Splinter), Ice Cube (Superfly), Natasia Demetriou (Wingnut), Ayo Edebiri (April O’Neil), Giancarlo Esposito (Baxter Stockman), Post Malone (Ray Fillet), Paul Rudd (Mondo Gecko) and Maya Rudolph (Cynthia Utrom).

The footage opened with April interviewing the turtles, and Mikey is asking if there are more people like her. Will people accept them? April says, "No, there's no way," which plays as a funny moment. They just want to be accepted, and they think that if they take down bad guys with April, they can prove themselves. The heroes in a half-shell are on the trail of a villain named Superfly. In a darkroom, a wall has an investigation collage complete with yarn and whatnot, including  the question, "Who is Superfly?"

It then cuts to a scene that shows the brothers mocking Leonardo for saying, "Let's go," like he's a leader. They use baby voices, like, "Let's go, ooooh!" Bebop and Rocksteady appear and they're straight-up jacked, as we've seen in the trailer. The footage makes it seem like Superfly is the main villain, with Bebop and Rocksteady as his underlings. There are other bad guys though, including Wingnut, Ray Fillet, Leatherhead, Genghis Frog, Scumbug (who only speaks vermin), and Mondo Gecko, who speaks with an Australian accent. Mikey and Mondo appear to get along with one of them saying, "I'm digging your vibe."

A montage shows the turtles jumping across rooftops and off the back of cars. Raphael asks April if she filmed them doing that. April says, "Am I supposed to film everything you do? Because a lot of it is dumb."

Leonardo tattles on his bros to Splinter when they get home about almost going to the movies with a human. They're all pissed, "Leo, you ratted us out." Splinter says: "Hey! Don't use that word that way."

There are a lot of Zack Snyder-esque slow-motion moments, not unlike the opening of Watchmen, where they're fighting bad guys, looking like comic panels brought to life. Overall, it looks spectacular and killer, and the animation style is exactly what you'd expect from the trailer.

The movie's plot: “After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.”

The full cast includes Hannibal Buress (Genghis Frog), Rose Byrne (Leatherhead), John Cena (Rocksteady), Jackie Chan (Splinter), Ice Cube (Superfly), Natasia Demetriou (Wingnut), Ayo Edebiri (April O’Neil), Giancarlo Esposito (Baxter Stockman), Post Malone (Ray Fillet), Seth Rogen (Bebop), Paul Rudd (Mondo Gecko), Maya Rudolph (Cynthia Utrom); alongside Micah Abbey (Donatello), Shamon Brown Jr. (Michelangelo), Nicolas Cantu (Leonardo), and Brady Noon (Raphael).

Jeff Rowe directed with co-director Kyler Spears from a script by Rogen and longtime creative partner Evan Goldberg, Rowe, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. The latest installment is based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. Point Grey’s Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver produced with Ramsay McBean and Josh Fagen taking executive producer credit.

CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, is being held inside Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from April 24-27.

Sharkdog Season 3 Episode Guide

Netflix bowed Sharkdog season three, featuring the next seven episodes of the hit CG-animated series on Thursday, April 27!

Sharkdog follows 10 year old Max and his best friend Sharkdog - half shark, half dog, all appetite. Blissfully unaware of his own strength, stealth and general sharkiness, Sharkdog often leaves a trail of chaos in his wake. But, like all good half-dogs, he's Max's BFF and Max is his.

Sharkdog is created by Singaporean creator Jacinth Tan and produced by Paramount Global's ViacomCBS International Studios, in partnership with Singaporean based CGI animation studio One Animation.

Sharkdog is VIS' first internationally originated global animated series for Netflix. It is also the first animated series from Singapore to come out of Nickelodeon's Global Animated Shorts Program, designed to identify and develop long form original comedy-driven content for kids globally.

Sharkdog features the voices of Liam Mitchell as Max; Dee Bradley Baker (Legends of the Hidden Temple, Star Trek: Prodigy) as Sharkdog; Grey Griffin (Fairly OddParents, The Loud House) as Mom; Josh McDermitt (The Walking Dead) as Dad; Kari Wahlgren (Fairly OddParents, Bunsen Is a Beast, Breadwinners) as Mia; and Meaghan Davies (Bananas in Pyjamas) as Annabelle.

The latest new episodes of Sharkdog join the first seven episodes that make up season one, which premiered in September 2021, and a Halloween special, "Sharkdog’s Fintastic Halloween," released in October 2021. In total, there are currently 15 episodes of Sharkdog available to stream on Netflix.

Here we go
It's the lean, green, ninja team
On the scene, cool teens doin' ninja things
So extreme, out the sewer, like laser beams
Get rocked with the Shell-shocked Pizza Kings
Can't stop these radical dudes
The secret of the ooze made the chosen few
Emerge from the shadows, to make their moves
The good guys win and the bad guys lose
Leonardo's the leader in blue
Does anything it takes to get his ninjas through
Donatello is a fellow, has a way with machines
Raphael has the most attitude on the team
Michelangelo, he's one of a kind
And you know just where to find him when it's party time
Master Splinter taught them every single skill they need
To be one lean, mean, green, incredible team
