Macomb’s Butch Hartman Creates New Nickelodeon Series "Bunsen Is A Beast"

Mike Hartman has waited 49 years for a cartoon character to be named after him. He came close when his brother, Butch Hartman, created Nickelodeon’s The Fairly OddParents - but no candy bar.

“Timmy Turner was supposed to be named after me, but we actually got into a little family squabble, so he named him after my youngest brother,” Hartman told The Detroit News, jokingly adding, “so it’s about time to finally get one named after me.”

That character would be Mikey, the kid protagonist in the new Nickelodeon brand-new original animated series Bunsen is a Beast, debuting 5:30 p.m. ET/PT on Tuesday 21st February 2017. Executive produced by Mike’s older brother, who was born in Highland Park and raised in Roseville and Chesterfield Township, the animated series follows the adventures of Bunsen — the first beast to attend a human grade school — and his best friend, Mikey.

The fictional school, Muckledunk, is based on Butch Hartman’s experiences at Wellington Elementary in Roseville and Anchor Bay High in Chesterfield. In an interview from Nickelodeon’s Burbank, California, headquarters last week, Hartman, 52, says he was the kid who loved Dungeons & Dragons and Star Wars.

“Nobody was into what I was into, really. I wanted to make movies and things like that,” says Hartman, whose real name is Elmer Earl Hartman IV. “I definitely had to navigate through high school very carefully, and that’s kind of what this show is about — it’s about fitting in, it’s about being different and hoping people like you for who you are. And who could be more different than a beast?”

This is the fourth series Hartman has spearheaded since joining Nickelodeon in 1998. The others are Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy and The Fairly OddParents, which launched in 2001 and is the network’s third longest-running animated series. He also wrote and directed episodes of Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory, Cow & Chicken and Johnny Bravo.

His favorite? He says it’s “really hard” to pick.

“You work so much on these shows, and they all get very close to you,” he says. “If I had to pick, I’d probably say The Fairly OddParents, only because I’ve worked on it for so long.”

Hartman traces his career beginnings to kindergarten, when his teacher, Mrs. Shelly, asked the class to draw a picture of her. When she saw Hartman’s, she started raving.

“I thought I was in trouble or something,” he recalls. “And it turned out, she thought it was really good and made a big fuss over it and put it on the board. I realized at a very young age that I could get attention from adults if I kept drawing things.”

And draw he did — at the sketch table his father, a General Motors employee, built for him or wherever inspiration struck.

“He was always drawing cartoons,” says Mike Hartman. “And I was always out playing football or baseball, and I would kind of laugh at him, like, ‘Hey, what are you doing, dude?’ I wanted to be a pro quarterback. And now all the sudden he’s in the Hall of Fame of Animation.”

Mike, a 49-year-old Waterford resident who works at Seventy 7 Productions in Royal Oak, says his brother is a “workhorse.”

Growing up, Butch Hartman dreamed of working for Disney. He hasn’t, but in high school he befriended Mount Clemens native Dan Jeup, whose credits now include Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Pixar’s Toy Story 2. They met through a mutual Chesterfield friend, Bob Scott, who went on to animate Pixar’s Cars and The Incredibles.

Before Hartman joined Jeup at the California Institute of the Arts, he’d mail him cartoons to critique.

“When I got his stuff — from what I remember — it was very cartoony style and might have some super hero stuff in there, too. He definitely had talent,” says Jeup, 53, in an interview from the Bay Area. “I told him what I told Bob: to learn about quick sketching and how to draw things realistically as well as cartoony, but he already had a built-in feel for it.”

Jeup — who’s working on a project he can’t disclose — hasn’t seen Hartman’s new series, but says he’s “done phenomenally” in the industry.

“He has his own sort of approach to animation that has worked extremely well for him in terms of the type of design and storytelling that he does,” Jeup says.

Hartman says his favorite part of creating any series is, in fact, the storytelling.

“We have nothing unless we have a story,” he says. “Even if the cartoon looks great, if the story is terrible, it doesn’t really matter ... I want to put as many jokes as I can in any story, so kids will have to come back and rewatch it to catch things they’ve missed.”

Adults appreciate the humor, too. Anchor Bay High principal Jack Stanton says his five children, ages 9-22, are fans of The Fairly Oddparents, as is he.

“It’s a riot,” he says. “As a parent, you always appreciate the shows that have a little bit of humor pointed at you, as well as plenty of humor pointed at your kids.”

Stanton wasn’t the principal when Hartman attended Anchor Bay, but says his success sets a great example for students.

“We’re certainly proud to have him represent our community,” Stanton says.

With two daughters of his own and his parents now deceased, Hartman doesn’t get back to Michigan much. But he still sneaks his hometown pride into shows. In the second “Bunsen is a Beast” episode, for example, Bunsen’s head gets separated from his body. His body then boards a bus headed for “Anchor Bay.”

When Hartman did return for a family reunion a few years ago, he hopped around town drawing cartoon characters in chalk. He left Cosmo from The Fairly OddParents at Chesterfield’s Swirly Top Dairy Bar. “I drove by it a year later, and it was still there,” his brother says.

Mike spills another secret: The Hartmans have a subtle cameo in The Fairly OddParents TV movie “Channel Chasers” when Timmy jumps into a TV. “If you slow it down, there’s photos of family and friends in there,” he says.

While anybody named Mike used to get beat up in his brother’s shows, Mike says he has a good relationship with his brother and is honored to be a main character in Bunsen is a Beast, voiced by Jeremy Rowley (Bunsen) and Ben Giroux (Mikey).

For any kid in Michigan who dreams of being an animator, Hartman has one piece of advice: keep practicing.

“You’ve got to really work on your craft as much as possible,” he says. “Get as good as you can.”

Don’t be afraid to leave home, either, he adds.

“Today with computers, you can create your own animation industry wherever you are, but if you want to get out there and learn how to do things in a big way that will really challenge you,” he says, “you need to leave home and see what the industry is all about.”

But even if you move across the country, you won’t completely leave home behind.

As Hartman says, “There’s a Detroit reference I think in everything I do.”

How Butch Hartman Created His New Nickelodeon Series "Bunsen Is a Beast"

There’s a new kid in school at Nickelodeon, and he’s a real beast!

Bunsen Is a Beast is the latest Nicktoon series from longtime Nickelodeon creator Butch Hartman, whose The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, and T.U.F.F. Puppy have all been hits for the studio.

Bunsen tells the tale of a strange creature learning to navigate the world of middle school for the first time with the help of his human friend Mikey. Bunsen just wants to show the human world that monsters and humans can co-exist peacefully without monsters wanting to eat everyone.

“The show’s about every kid’s experience in school about trying to fit in and be popular. Who better to try and fit in than someone who’s not even from this world,” Hartman, who first drew the characters back in 2009, when he was considering the idea for a children’s book, told Variety.

“I drew this cover picture of a boy and a monster looking at each other. They look a lot different now than they did then. And I thought of the name Bunsen Is a Beast right then. ‘That’ll be kind of funny as a cool kids’ book.’ Then I set it aside,” Hartman explains. “It sat in my office for three or four years, then an exec at Nickelodeon saw it and said, ‘We ought to develop this.’ And that’s how we got the ball rolling.”

The show premieres on Feb. 21 at 5:30pm ET/PT, and will air at that time through Feb. 24, before moving to its regular timeslot of Saturdays at 10:30am ET/PT. Two episodes of Bunsen Is a Beast are available for preview ahead of the premiere at Nick.com.

The voice cast includes Jeremy Rowley as Bunsen, Ben Giroux as his human buddy Mikey and Kari Wahlgren as beast hater Amanda. Saturday Night Live alum Cheri Oteri also appears as the voice of schoolteacher Miss Flap.

In addition to his work with Nickelodeon, the prolific Hartman also created the Noog Network, an iPhone app that features interactive games, cartoons and live shows. “I kind of never stop. I never sleep. I just like to draw and put ideas down. And every idea that Nickelodeon doesn’t buy I put on the Noog Network,” explains Hartman. He notes that Noog is a good place to try out new ideas and see how they go over in a short amount of time.

The free app is currently only available on iPhone's, but will so be available for Android phones in the next few months, according to Hartman.

First-Look At First Instalment Of New "Legend of Korra" Comic Book Series, "Turf Wars"

Nickelodeon's hit animated series The Legend of Korra ended with its two female leads, the powerful Avatar Korra and the ingenious industrialist Asami, holding hands and walking together through a portal into the Spirit World. After a few years, fans will finally get to see what happens next, thanks to Dark Horse’s new comic sequel, The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars!

The first comic based on Korra, Turf Wars is written by series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino and illustrated by Irene Koh. It features Korra and Asami, affectionately known as Korrasami by fans, dealing with the chaos caused by the new portal — both in the Spirit World and back home in Republic City.

“Korra has to figure out how to find a new balance in the city with all this stuff that’s gone on,” DiMartino recently told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s gonna take place right after the finale, so it’s focusing on Korra and Asami’s relationship as a new threat emerges. It’s kind of like the aftermath dealing with the new portal in the city, and all the evacuees coming back to find their homes wiped out because of the portal.”

Check out an fantastic preview of the first installment of Turf Wars below. It’s set to hit stores in June 2017!:

FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR Theme - TV Tunes Acapella

A Cappella cover of the opening theme song to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air TV series, "Yo Home To Bel-Air":

Original Composer - Will Smith

Sing-along with the lyrics below!:

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school

When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'

I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, homes to Bel Air'

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air.

Viacom Is Swapping Its Elaborate Upfront Presentations for Intimate Dinners With Its CEO

Since wrapping last year’s upfronts, no media company has changed as drastically as Viacom. It has a new permanent president and CEO in Robert Bakish, a new ad sales chief in Sean Moran and — now that plans for a merger with CBS have been scrapped — a new direction, which Bakish unveiled last week.

So it’s not a surprise that as Viacom resets for this year’s upfronts, it would also change its approach to the presentations. The company has decided to drop most of its pricey, splashy upfront spectacles — the company held five of them last year — in favor of more intimate, individual dinners and presentations with agencies and holding companies. Those gatherings will offer clients the chance to speak with Viacom’s top execs, including Bakish, about the company’s new vision for its brands.

“We wanted to cater to their needs, have it in a relaxed setting, and have access to the top leadership at Viacom, so they can truly understand the company they’re investing with, and the reason that they should be excited about those investments,” Sean Moran, head of marketing and partner solutions for Viacom, told Adweek.

Those Viacom leaders will include Bakish himself, who suggested to Moran that he be involved in the dinners. “In this industry, it’s not often that you get the CEO of one of these major media companies that will spend this amount of time, over an extended period, with the partners. But for us, it’s such a key moment for Viacom, that it’s an exciting time to share this message in a really personal way,” said Moran.

During those meetings, Bakish will elaborate on the plans he revealed last Thursday to turn around the struggling company, by shifting resources to its “flagship six” networks — BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Paramount (which will be rebranded early next year from Spike) — which he said have global revenue potential. The other networks, which include TV Land, VH1, Logo and CMT, will continue to operate, but Viacom will shift some of their resources to the core six networks.

Viacom will hold between 6 to 10 of these upfront dinners, with most taking place in New York, starting in late March and stretching through April. The company is also looking to hold the dinners elsewhere, including Chicago and Detroit.

In recent years, several networks have done away with their big upfront events in favor of smaller gatherings, with Discovery Communications, A+E Networks and AMC Networks all making the switch in recent years. Buyers have said they find that approach “far more valuable” in their upfront conversations.

Moran said the company had initially talked about combining all their presentations into a single event this year, much like NBCUniversal did in 2016 (and will continue with this year’s presentation, which will be held May 15 at Radio City Music Hall). But after speaking with client and agency partners about that approach, he decided to shift gears.

“What they helped me see is because of where Viacom is and some of the changes we’re going through, it’s the right year to mimic where we’re going with our overall product, which is not one voice speaking to many, but much more of a thoughtful, addressable approach,” he said.

Last year, Viacom held five separate upfront events for its networks, with presentations for Nickelodeon, TV Land/CMT, Comedy Central, MTV and BET.

Since then the company has reorganized its networks into three groups: BET Networks, including BET and Centric; the Global Entertainment Group, which includes MTV, Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, CMT, Logo and VH1; and the Nickelodeon Group, which includes Nickelodeon and its related brands.

The upfront dinners will cover all the networks in the Global Entertainment Group, while the company will still hold its traditional upfront events for Nickelodeon, which will take place March 2 in New York, and BET, which will occur April 27.

More Nick: Nick To Host Nickelodeon Upfront 2017 Presentation On Thursday 2nd March 2017 In New York City!

“Those brands have such a distinct value proposition and have really been on an established course for what those events represent for them, where there’s been a lot of evolution for the other events,” says Moran of the decision to keep the Nickelodeon and BET events.

Moran is looking forward to a much different, and seemingly less volatile, upfront environment for Viacom this year. In 2016, Viacom had to conduct its upfront business as founder Sumner Redstone and then-CEO Philippe Dauman publicly battled over the company’s future, while there was also speculation that then-ad sales chief Jeff Lucas would be leaving Viacom for Snapchat. (Less than two weeks after wrapping Viacom’s upfront sales, Lucas did indeed announce that he was headed to Snap Inc., where he is now vp and head of global sales.)

Dauman departed the company in September. Three months later, Viacom resolved the other major questions about its future, installing Robert Bakish as its permanent CEO and president after parent company National Amusements pulled the plug on a potential CBS-Viacom merger.

With Bakish setting the company on a new course, “it’s exhilarating,” said Moran. “It’s truly a renaissance that’s taking place here and I feel so fortunate to be a part of it.”
