The Brooklyn Nets to Host 'SpongeBob Day' on Friday, November 29, 2019

The Brooklyn Nets basketball team are teaming with Nickelodeon to integrate SpongeBob SquarePants into a Black Friday matinee game against the Boston Celtics on Friday, November 29, 2019!

In addition to arena appearances and in-game programming by SpongeBob, celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary, the first 5,000 kids aged 12 and under will receive a free Nets / SpongeBob arm and headband set.

Tickets for the game, set to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York can be purchased at netsnba.team/spongebob-tickets.

As part of the “SpongeBob Day”, the team is stocking up on a supply of co-branded licensed apparel, including T-shirts, a hoodie, a cap and socks in youth and adult sizes for holiday shoppers for in-arena retail only. Nets guard Kyrie Irving turned heads earlier this season with a Nike/Nick collaboration resulting in a variety of different styles of Irving/SpongeBob sneakers.

“With all of these, we look to build something beneficial for the team while engaging fans and building our own brand," said Ciji-Danielle Robinson, Nickelodeon’s senior director of sports marketing.

Nickelodeon has title-sponsored NASCAR races and activated at the Super Bowl, NBA All-Star Game and NHL Winter Classic, but the Nets activation is the latest example of a new model under which properties pay what’s essentially a licensing fee to have Nickelodeon help boost their ticket sales and per caps. The program was used across scores of minor league events, and this past summer, a Paw Patrol promotion with the Minnesota Twins helped draw a crowd to Target Field that was around 7,000 above average.

Robinson said the network will still do larger sports deals on an occasional basis, because “we have some history there, but we are focusing on a way to make it sustainable, while continuing to build our brand.”

If a recent pop-up in Los Angeles is any example, Nickelodeon could also fill empty arenas or stadiums on off nights with its own programming. The three-day “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Bikini Bottom Experience” attraction at L.A.’s Goya Studios last month (not to be confused with The SpongeBob Musical) sold out in a day.

Nickelodeon previously teamed up with the Brooklyn Nets in 2016 for a '90s Nickelodeon Night.

SpongeBob SquarePants, which was recently greenlit for a 13th season, has reigned as the number-one kids’ animated series on TV for the last 17 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical which is now touring North America and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is seen in more than 208 countries and territories, translated in 55+ languages, and averages more than 100 million total viewers every quarter. SpongeBob SquarePants is created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Nickelodeon's is currently in the midst of the network's "Best Year Ever", a year-long global celebration of one of the most iconic TV series and characters ever created. The “Best Year Ever” launched with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special earlier this summer, and leads up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, coming May 2020.

A CG-animated prequel spin-off series, Kamp Koral, following 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp, is also slated to premiere during Summer 2020.

THQ Nordic and Nickelodeon are slated to release SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, a remake of the much-loved video game, very soon.

The highly anticipated return of the Double Dare series premiered in the summer of 2018 on Nickelodeon and ranked as the year’s No. 1 new kids show with kids 6-11, while retaining the core adult audience who grew up with the original television show. The new Double Dare is hosted by digital creator and actress Liza Koshy, with original host Marc Summers providing color commentary on the challenges and lending his vast knowledge of the game and expertise to each episode. Season two is currently airing on Nickelodeon.

“Hosting the Double Dare Live tour couldn’t be any more exciting, and I look forward to continuing to bring the fun and messiness of ‘Double Dare’ to audiences across the country,” Summers said. “Doing the show again with my sidekick Robin will fulfill childhood dreams of the generation that grew up with us and introduce this classic show to the next generation.”

DOUBLE DARE LIVE! Announces Host Marc Summers' Farewell Tour At The Smith Center

Following more than three decades at the helm of Double Dare's slime-soaked shenanigans, Charlie Blum Entertainment / CB Entertainment and Red Tail Productions LLC, in partnership with Nickelodeon are happy - and a bit sad - to announce that the show's legendary host, Marc Summers, will be saying goodbye to Double Dare and its live tour at the end of this year, marking the conclusion of thousands of pies, numerous chocolate-covered chickens and of course, tons of slime!

Double Dare Live! will play The Smith Center in Las Vegas on Sunday, Oct. 20. For tickets and more information, visit TheSmithCenter.com.

Marc Summers summed it up by saying, "Going out on top has always been my goal. I was able to revive the program, both on television and in theaters across the country. 'Double Dare' has been a once in a lifetime experience. For over 30 years, I have had an amazing time entertaining a couple of generations. It's always been important to me to know when to say farewell, and I believe now is that time. But this is not retirement! I have a new show launching on Discovery, a live one many show, a documentary on my life, and a few other tricks up my sleeve!"

"I want to thank my extremely loyal fan base who first discovered me on 'Double Dare,' followed me over to 'What Would You Do?,' and continue to follow me in my career and on social media."

"Double Dare" premiered on Oct. 6, 1986, on Nickelodeon, and ran from 1986-1993, making it the network's longest running game show. Marc Summers served as the show's original host from 1986-1993. Shortly after its debut, "Double Dare" became one of the most popular original daily programs on cable television. The series went into syndication in 1988 and was later revived as "Super Sloppy Double Dare" in 1989. The show also ran on broadcast television as "Family Double Dare" in 1988, followed by new versions on Nick, including "Double Dare 2000." Nickelodeon launched a successful revival of the show in the summer of 2018 to the great acclaim of the original super fans and a whole new generation of kids. All new "Double Dare" episodes will air on Nickelodeon in October and December of this year.

The Double Dare Live! national tour launched with the TV revival and has announced tour dates currently through the end of 2019. Inspired by the iconic TV game show, Double Dare Live! features two teams comprised of selected audience members competing to win prizes by answering brain-bending trivia questions, completing messy physical challenges and ultimately facing the legendary obstacle course.

One of the tour producers Charlie Blum said, "It has been a total joy connecting our live audiences across the country with their TV hero Marc Summers while touring Double Dare Live. His command of the audience and the messiest game show on tour is mind-boggling and he will be sorely missed."

From the Las Vegas Review-Journal (click link for video interview with Marc Summers!):

‘Double Dare Live!’ allows grown-ups to fulfill childhood fantasy

If you’re between the ages of 24 and 38, you probably know who Marc Summers is.

Moreover, you’ve likely spent countless hours pondering the most efficient way to crack an egg over your forehead, scale a whipped cream-laden slide and snag a flag out of the nostrils of a giant nose.

For those who never got a shot at starring on “Double Dare” in the ’80s and ’90s, “Double Dare Live!” gives grown-ups a chance to take on the obstacle course in adulthood — in all of its messy, slimy glory.

The live show, which will be at The Smith Center for one night on Sunday, re-creates the television show on stage.

Rather than featuring just two teams of four people, 80 people from the audience will be selected to participate in rounds of trivia and physical challenges.

Returning to the helm is Summers, who hosted the Nickelodeon game show “Double Dare” as well as “Super Sloppy Double Dare” and “Family Double Dare.”

The TV show pitted two families against each other in trivia. The winning family could then go on to compete in a physical challenge such as filling a container with slime or launching a pie into a teammate’s oversized pants within 30 seconds.

Whichever team scored the most points could run the obstacle course.

The first act of the stage production pits kids and adults against each other in challenges such as “Musical Pies,” a variation on “Musical Chairs.”

In the second act, teams of four compete in the obstacle course, winning $100 for each obstacle completed within 60 seconds and $1,000 if the team completes all eight.

Many memorable obstacles from the show will make an appearance on The Smith Center stage, including “Pick It” — the giant nose that may or may not sneeze green slime all over contestants.

“We walk them through the course and try to give them every hint,” Summers says. “They don’t realize that it’s really difficult to climb up the slide when you’ve got whipped cream on your shoes. Adults just lose their minds like they did when they were 10 or 11 years old.”

Summers finds that, while the show is geared toward kids, many grown-ups come without any kids in tow.

“I explain to them that when they were kids, they would yell at the screen thinking they could do physical challenges better than the kids on the show,” Summers explains with a laugh. “And a lot of times they mess it up because they can’t believe they’re finally going to live out their childhood fantasy. You just see it go down the tubes!”

Summers, who also hosted “What Would You Do” on Nickelodeon in the ’90s and “Unwrapped” on Food Network, says that “Double Dare” got its start when Nickelodeon found that kids didn’t have a game show of their own.

“They took Truth or Dare and added questions. And then if you couldn’t answer it, you had the physical challenge aspect and then the obstacle course,” Summers says. “It became that at 5:30, America would stop. We were just at the right place at the right time and parents would let their kids sit and watch this ridiculous show.”

In its initial run, Summers hosted live shows in 15,000-seat theaters.

“It was pandemonium,” he says. “It was like being a rock star for kids. It was just so gigantic. And so when we did it this time, I said I don’t want to play those big theaters, I’d rather play a more intimate place such as this. So it’s been much better I think this way.”

Summers says that the secret sauce that made “Double Dare” a big hit the first time around still is relevant.

“Kids like getting messy,” he says. “The first day I walked on the set, there were all these obstacles and they were putting whipped cream and chocolate syrup on them. I said, ‘What is this?’ And they said, ‘Well, we think kids want to get messy.’ And I thought, ‘Well, I’ll be going home real soon.’ ”

For millennials and Gen-Xers who wish to live out their childhood fantasies, Summers has three tips.

The first is to show enthusiasm when Summers scans the audience for volunteers to join him on stage.

If you succeed in getting picked to go onstage, listen to Summers’ directions. For instance, when tasked with climbing Sundae Sliders, use the railing to climb, rather than the desert-covered slide.

And finally, make sure to bring a change of clothes.

###

Update (19/11) - The Double Dare Live tour stop at the The Oncenter Crouse Hinds Theater in Syracuse, New York on December 10 has unfortunately been cancelled. “Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, the Double Dare Live performance on Dec. 10th in Syracuse, NY has regrettably been cancelled," the tour said in a statement. "Refunds will be available from the original point of purchase.”

Refunds for tickets, which ranged in price from $35 to $65, will be available through Ticketmaster or the Solvay Bank Box Office at The Oncenter, depending on where you purchased them.

The tour, set to be Summer’s “farewell” to the show, also previously canceled stops in Wyoming, Washington and Oregon earlier this fall. Upcoming dates appear to still be on as scheduled in other cities, including Bangor, Maine; Mashantucket, Connecticut; Medford, Massachusetts; and Reading, Pennsylvania.
