How Viacom Velocity Redefined Partnerships for the ‘Kids’ Choice Awards’

ViacomCBS’ in-house branded content studio partnered with Mattel and MilkPEP to air culturally conscious campaigns.


Nickelodeon’s 33rd annual Kids’ Choice Awards looked different from previous shows. The show shifted from a traditional awards ceremony filmed in front of kids, families, and celebs alike, to one that was produced remotely with virtual celebrity cameos and at-home musical performances. In another mark of nimble production, it featured commercial creative that reflected the new normal during coronavirus.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused a mass shuffle in TV advertising that’s required brand marketers to sidestep their current ad campaigns to make room for culturally sensitive content with updated messaging. When it was announced in April that the KCAs would air in early May, following being postponed from March, Viacom Velocity quickly approached the show’s sponsors with strategies to update their campaigns, where necessary, enabling the brands to continue to support the show and promote their messages.

“Everything about this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards was focused on providing an entertaining experience for kids and families in the comfort of their own homes, from the homes of all their favorite celebrities and heroes. It was much more intimate, since we were adhering to social distancing guidelines, but also lighthearted and relatable for our fans,” says April L McKenzie, Vice President (VP) of Activation at Velocity. “Our advertisers wanted to ensure their campaigns provided maximum impact while aligning with the current reality. We worked swiftly to reimagine the content and adjust any creative developed for the original live show that was planned for March.”

For Velocity, the work is indicative of the remote production that’s become their new normal. The studio remains fully operational, with creative and production teams working collaboratively to find creative ways to create and distribute content.

Among the partners who updated their campaigns were Mattel Barbie and Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP). George Sholley, VP of Production at Velocity, shared, “Working with each brand, we were able to edit some of the shots or add in new pieces of content to ensure the creative reflected the present day situation, while maintaining their core messages.”

“We’re nimble by nature,” explains Lisa Bull, VP of Activation at Velocity. “For Barbie and MilkPEP specifically, we needed to adjust the creative to reflect the current environment for our audience. Together, with our partners, we were able to move quickly to deliver amazing creative with timely messages.”

Updated Action Shots for MilkPEP

MilkPEP worked with Velocity to create a custom campaign that included 2-minute and 30-second cuts. Filmed in February, they featured Olympic-hopeful skateboarder Bryce Wettstein performing choreographed tricks and dance moves with kid-dancers and professional BMX riders at a skate park.

“Less than a month ago, you wouldn’t have to think twice about creating and airing an ad that showed kids skateboarding together and having fun. But, times have clearly changed,” explains Justin Kovics, VP and Group Creative Director at Velocity. “We had to ensure the message our partners wanted to express wasn’t tone deaf in the current climate of social distancing, especially because kids are a huge part of the Kids’ Choice Awards’ audience.”

Velocity re-cut the original spots, weaving together a series of single-person shots to replace the group scenes. The final moments of the ad encouraged viewers, “Wherever you are, whatever you do…milk it.”


“We are grateful for our partnership with Nickelodeon and agency Campbell Ewald,” said MilkPEP CEO Yin Woon Rani. “We were impressed with how quickly we could make changes to the spot to reflect social distancing and represent a positive example of how to reflect that behavior to this important audience.”

A Custom Message to Fans for Mattel

Prior to COVID-19, the in-house branded content studio created custom content for Mattel Barbie®. The initial creative centered on a young girl, showcasing her talents, and featured a group of kids dancing together to a performance by 13-year-old DJ Livia.

Given that schools are currently closed and social distancing measures are in place, the content had the potential to be confusing or alarming to kids. So, Velocity used remote capture to record a message from DJ Livia in which she explained that the footage was shot previously and encouraged her fans to stay indoors.

“We’re using music to remind girls that they can be anything,” DJ Livia says in the video. She then went on to remind fans that “play is never canceled.”


“We were really able to lean in and leverage the power of DJ Livia as an influencer and a real girl realizing her passion, to send a positive message to audiences tuning into the awards show, while also making sure the brand’s original message didn’t get lost,” says Jared Elliott, VP and Group Creative Director at Velocity.

According to Mattel, the updated creative enabled the brand to reinforce its message at a critical time. “The Barbie brand believes in play, even during these difficult times,” says Aimee London, Senior Director of Marketing at Mattel. “Working with DJ Livia to pivot our approach by celebrating at home, allowed us to show girls they can be anything, while also celebrating imagination and social connection.”

As brands continue to adjust to the “new normal” caused by coronavirus, Velocity continues to find creative ways to adapt and connect with audiences—even when they can’t be in the same room together. From remote production capabilities, to crafting relevant and meaningful content on the fly, the creative team continues to bring brand ideas into being.

“The shop is not closed by any stretch of the imagination,” says Sholley. “We are able to make things happen remotely, and we are especially well-equipped for this moment.”

El miércoles, muchos episodios estarán protagonizados por Lincoln y su amigo Clyde, con aventuras como cuando, en un esfuerzo por no ser los hombres olvidados de la escuela de primaria Royal Woods, Lincoln y Clyde hacen lo que sea necesario para salir en las fotos grupales del anuario.

Para ir terminando la semana, ¿qué mejor que con la familia Loud al completo? El jueves, Nickelodeon emitirá, entre otros, el episodio en el que toda la familia se va de vacaciones, pero mientras viajan a su destino, parece que todo lo que puede salir mal, ¡sale mal!

В апреле телеканалы ViacomCBS продемонстрировали отличные результаты — по данным Mediascope,1 суммарная доля смотрения развлекательных и детских каналов медиахолдинга выросла на 20 % по сравнению с мартом 2020-го, а Nick Jr. и Nickelodeon HD выросли на 46 % и 34 % соответственно и обогнали все детские телеканалы по доле прироста, включая эфирные.

Телеканалы Paramount Channel, Paramount Comedy и Spike, известные своим качественным киносериальным контентом, также показали стремительный рост. Доля смотрения канала Paramount Channel в апреле увеличилась по сравнению с мартом 2020-го на 94%, Spike на 52%, а Paramount Comedy – на 17%. Nickelodeon Россия, ставший лидером в детском сегменте по всей России, увеличил среднее время смотрения у аудитории 4-17 лет: в апреле дети ежедневно смотрели телеканал 86 минут. Больше всего юным зрителям полюбился мультсериал «Касагранде» — впервые новое шоу вошло в топ передач на Nickelodeon Россия. Анимационный хит Nickelodeon, «Губка Боб Квадратные Штаны», также вошел в тройку лидеров по просмотрам.3

MTV Россия, ведущий развлекательный канал для молодежи во всем мире, продемонстрировал рост среднего времени просмотра на 20 %. В апреле зрители MTV Россия смогли первыми увидеть концерт «Единый Мир: Дома вместе» на ТВ, организуемый компанией Global Citizen и Всемирной организацией здравоохранения (ВОЗ) при поддержке певицы Lady Gaga, а также специальные марафоны MTV Unplugged с Димой Биланом, Полиной Гагариной, группами «Аквариум», «Сплин», «Звери» и другими.

Nickelodeon USA Acquires Rights to Latin American Teen Sci-Fi Thriller 'Dani Who?'

Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to the teen sci-fi thriller Dani Who?, which has been a hit in Latin America, for podcast and TV series adaptations for general market audiences!


Set in a ‘90s Mexican village, Dani Who? is a story of a group of teenagers who formed an inseparable bond after the disappearance of a girl in the town of San Gregorio. Little by little, they discover they have many things in common and that their stories hide a web of secrets they never imagined. As they bond together, they discover they have special abilities and are being watched over by a mysterious corporation.

Dani Who? is a testament to our studios capabilities to create original and versatile content that can be adapted for multi-platforms in different markets,” said Federico Cuervo, Senior Vice President (SVP) and head of ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS). “Dani Who? was a fan favorite in Latin America and we’re proud that this successful series can explore different formats to win over young audiences in the United States.”


Dani Who? (10 episodes) is produced by Viacom International Studios and Mexican powerhouse Argos Comunicación, and premiered on Paramount Channel Latin America in November 2019. The series was Paramount Channel's first original series commission.

Dani Who? follows Nickelodeon successfully making US adaptations of Nickelodeon Latin America's Every Witch Way (Grachi), I An Frankie (Yo Soy Frankie) and Talia in the Kitchen (Toni, La Chef).

MIAMI – MAY 22, 2020 – ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) and Juan José Campanella announced its new series, Los Enviados, during the studio’s press event today held virtually. The series, produced by VIS and 100 Bares, the famed director’s production company, is the first project produced under the First Look Deal between VIS and Campanella, announced last year.

Today’s virtual event was hosted by Mexican actress Valeria Vera, and featured executives Pierluigi Gazzolo, President OTT & VIS of VCNI, Federico Cuervo, SVP & Head of VIS Americas, Laura Abril, SVP, Head of VIS EMEAA and Guillermo Borensztein, VP of Sales Contents and Coproduction of VIS Americas. One of the highlights during today’s event was the participation of Juan José Campanella, one of the most prominent and prestigious filmmakers with a worldwide career as director, producer and screenwriter for films and series. During his conversation with Vera, Campanella shared exclusive details about Los Enviados, the new series he will direct.

Los Enviados follows the story of two priests on a mission to verify the alleged healer who mysteriously disappears. Their lives, as well as their faith, are pushed to the limit when they discover the psychiatric community on the outskirts of town, who are hiding secrets behind the missing healer.

“Every year, there is an increasing demand for original content on a global scale, and our studio has become one of the leading producers, teaming up with the best strategic partners,” said Federico Cuervo. “We are very excited to announce the development of this series, our first project with the renowned Juan Jose Campanella.”

VIS executives also announced the co-production and distribution agreement with Dynamo for an action thriller that will begin filming in Mexico City in the coming months and the agreement with Nickelodeon to acquire the rights to the sci-fi smash thriller Dani Who? for podcast and series adaptations for general market audiences. Campanella ended his participation by revealing his new project in the works, Outlaw, based on the story of Joaquín Murrieta, the famous outlaw from California, written by Adrian Cruz.

ViacomCBS International Studios Unveils 2020 Slate

Argentine Academy Award winner Juan José Campanella (“The Secret in Their Eyes”) is planning “Outlaw,” a reboot of El Zorro, inspired by his take on the historical figure behind the legend, Joaquín Murrieta, the director announced at an online presentation of Viacom International Studios 2020-21 slate.

Part of his first-look deal with Viacom International Studios, “Outlaw” will be “told with much more realism,” he added.

Campanella also announced further details of drama-thriller series “Los Enviados,” which looks like the first title to go before the cameras from his first-look deal with VIS, announced last May.

Led by Pierluigi Gazzolo, president, Studios and OTT, ViacomCBS Networks International, VIS top executives also used the presentation to announce renewals and deliver an update on a swathe of new titles announced over the last few months.

Murrieta is still portrayed by some sources as a petty horse thief. Campanella, however, is taking a different tack, framing the figure in a broader historical context.

“Murrieta enters in action when California, which was Mexican, is annexed as part of the U.S. [in 1848],” Campanella said.

He added: “Mexican citizens suddenly became foreigners, and begin to be pretty badly treated with punitive taxes and the expropriation of their lands. Murrieta was one of the first Mexicans to rebel against that. He became the first ‘terrorist,’ you might say, in the U.S.”

“Outlaw” is written by Adrián Cruz.

Season 1 of “Los Enviados” will be set in a hamlet in Yucatán, Mexico. “As the saying goes, ‘small village, big hell,” Campanella said.

The series’ protagonists, two priests – one from Spain, the other from Mexico, both schooled in science, medicine and law – are dispatched around the world by the Vatican to investigate alleged miracles. “That can take them to pretty dangerous places,” Campanella said, describing the series as a crime investigation thriller with “mystic and fantasy elements, and highly challenging visuals and plot.”

In further news, VIS is teaming with The Mediapro Studio to produce Season 2 of tween telenovela “Club 57” for Nickelodeon Latin America, said Federico Cuervo, SVP and head of VIS Americas.

It has also renewed for a fifth season Nickelodeon teen soap “Spotlight,” set at a Berlin school of arts and produced by UFA Serial Drama, said Laura Abril, SVP, head of VIS EMEA.

The new titles join a slate that reflects the robust rampup of production at ViacomCBS International Studios in the space of just three years. In 2020, VIS will add more than 25 productions to its slate, making for 2,500 hours produced from its early 2018 launch. It has 45 projects in development, said Gazzolo.

To illustrate VIS’ breadth – in production and distribution – Cuervo screened a short promo of recent releases: One was black comedy “R,” produced by VIS and SVOD platform Claro Video, starring Mauricio Ochmann (“El Clon”) and debuting in Latin America on April 27 on Paramount Network and on May 7 on Claro Video.

“Ana,” by contrast, is a comedy-drama produced by Mexico’s Argos Comunicación and VIS, starring Ana de la Reguera as a semi-made-up version of herself, which premiered on April 20 on Comedy Central, while streaming on PantaYA for the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Bowing May 20 on Telefe, the Argentine broadcast network, and then on Argentine cable network Cablevision’s Flow SVOD service a day later, “Los internacionales,” also showcased, is a true-facts-based to-catch-a-thief thriller set largely in 2002 Argentina and starring Colombia’s Juan Pablo Shuk and Argentina’s Cecilia Roth.

Also featured in the promo reel, “Homens?” from Brazilian online comedy troupe Porta Dos Fundos, satirizes contemporary male 30something crisis. It first aired on March 18 on Brazil’s Comedy Central, then on Amazon Prime Video.

From Spain, Abril screened a teaser trailer of sentimental dramedy “El día menos pensado,” about a group of people from all walks of life – even Mexico in the case of a down-on-his-luck musician played by Alfonso Herrera, whose featured scene delivered the biggest laugh of the whole VIS presentation – who resort to group therapy to get over the death of their partners. “Elite” producer Zeta Studios will co-produce.

Brief though the videos were, they nail much of VIS’ DNA. Almost all the shows are co-productions, near always with premiere production companies in Latin America and Spain. The series are made by or frame some of the biggest talents and stars in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world; they boast a myriad distribution outlets.

As Guillermo Borensztein, VIS Americas VP of sales contents and co-production, commented, analyzing VIS strategy, VIS has made over 20 co-productions in the last two years and has the “power to define the commercial cycle of contents, whether releasing on our platforms, distributing with third-parties, or on third-party platforms.”

ViacomCBS’ shares jumped early May after first-quarter results announcement on the back of growth in streaming and an expanded carriage deal with YouTube TV.

VIS’ strategy going forward looks, however, to reflect the strategic priorities which ViacomCBS outlined in its February earnings report: Accelerating streaming momentum; “maximizing the power of content;” increasing revenues in distribution, ad sales and content licensing.

Going forward, Borensztein said on Friday, VIS will look to penetrate new territories, such as Africa; continue the sale of formats for U.S. re-versioning, such as YA sci-fi thriller “Dani Who?” to Nickelodeon; and explore new lines of business.

VIS already has its pedal to the metal in Spanish-language content production, Friday’s presentation suggested.

Abril said VIS EMEA had a “multitude of projects in development” and showrunners would soon be announced on a bio-series of Spanish boxer Poli Díaz and on a small-screen adaptation of best-selling Spanish novel “La novia gitana,” produced with Endemol Shine’s Spanish production house Diagonal TV.

Cuervo added that half-hour series “Mentiras pasajeras” was advancing in development with Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo; and Viacom would soon confirm new series makeovers of classic Paramount movie titles in the wake of the success of “To Catch a Thief.”

Netflix Reportedly Eyeing 'Inception' Star for Live-Action 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Series

Few animated shows are as universally revered as Avatar: The Last Airbender. If you need proof, look no further than the results of Netflix recently adding it to its platform. What makes this achievement even more impressive is the fact that the show first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005 and has remained relevant ever since.


The series even received a sequel in the form of The Legend of Korra, along with comic book spinoffs, novelizations, video games, and a live-action movie adaptation from M. Night Shyamalan.

In addition to the animated series being added to its digital library, Netflix is also developing a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series based on the beloved Nickelodeon series, and, according to a new rumor, the streaming site has their eye on an Inception star for a role.


According to the rumor, Ken Watanabe is being eyed for the part of series antagonist Fire Lord Ozai. From The Last Samurai to the aforementioned Inception and more recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the actor has been cast in numerous high-profile blockbusters over the years and would certainly be a good fit for the role. Of course, he’s presumably just one name being looked at and there’s no telling if he’ll end up signing on, but it certainly seems like Netflix is aiming high.

Whoever ends up being cast though, the production team definitely have their work cut out for them, as you’d be hard pressed to find a more devoted group of fans than those in the Avatar fanbase. After the movie was widely criticised, they’ll not let another substandard production pass them by, and they’ll certainly make their cause public if they need to.

In the latest TV Legends Revealed, discover the surprising secret behind the creation of the green slime on You Can't Do That On Television!


TV URBAN LEGEND: The green slime on You Can't Do That On Television came about due to a mistake.

You Can't Do That On Television was a sketch comedy/variety series that ran on Canadian television and on Nickelodeon throughout the 1980s (it started in 1979 and ended in 1990, with a couple of gap years, so ten total seasons). It's famous for introducing slime to Nickelodeon.

The show was originally intended to be basically Saturday Night Live, only with teens and pre-teens - a forerunner to All That.


Actor Les Lye played multiple roles in the series and the kids would change from year to year. Every episode would be about a particular theme and the sketches would somehow involve that theme.

The sketches were almost all just recurring bits, like one set in a dungeon (with Lye playing a dungeon master)...


or a firing squad (with Lye playing the guy who says "Ready! Aim! Fire!")...


or a burger joint (with Lye playing Barth, the owner of the burger joint)...


or a disheveled Senator at home (played by Lye)...


The show is best known today, though, for its green slime, which would be dropped on any one who says "I don't know."


Everyone got hit by the stuff, even short-lived cast member, Alanis Morissette!


Even long after You Can't Do That On Television stopped airing on Nickelodeon, the green slime had become so iconic that it remained as a symbol of the network and its Kids' Choice Awards. Here's John Cena being slimed...


Being slimed is highly regarded as Nickelodeon's highest honor.

What's amazing, though, is that the green slime was invented by mistake!

One of You Can't Do That On Television's creators, Geoffrey Darby, was interviewed by Mathew Klickstein for Vulture, and Darby revealed the surprising secret origin of the green slime...

"How did you end up creating green slime?

Slime was an accident. Honestly, it was an accident.

We used to save stuff like pies and water until the end of the day so that we wouldn’t be waiting around with an expensive crew while we waited for the kid to get showered and cleaned up.

We were in the dungeon set and what happened was we had this joke, which was, “Whatever you do, kids, don’t pull on that chain.”

We went to the cafeteria and got them to give us a bucket of slop.

We said, “We want you to take all the stuff that’s left on plates over the whole day and put it in this bucket.” And then we were going to dump it on the kid so that it looked like if he pulled the chain, sewage would come out.

We didn’t get around to shooting the scene because you can’t go into overtime with children. It’s against the law. If you don’t get the scene, you don’t get the scene. We didn’t get it shot.

So we put the set up again the following week to shoot that one scene…

The prop man came to me – literally, this is a completely true story – and said, “There’s a problem.” The problem was that he didn’t get a new bucket of slop. He just kept the old one back stage. There was about eight to ten inches of green crud. Growing. It had grown on the top of this bucket of… stuff. There was mold.

So, we had to get the scene, right? We couldn’t get more slop, because we couldn’t! I said, “Dump… it… on… the… kid… anyway.”

And that’s how green slime was invented.

Wait, there was no concern about health issues here?!

No, not really. You [the kid] just needed to keep [his] mouth closed [literally, not figuratively] and go into a shower afterwards.

The first slime was real, then?

It was really evil. And, God, did it smell!

And the kid’s name who it was dumped on [Green Slime Victim #1!] was Tim Douglas [who also acted in Monty Python’s Meaning of Life]. And that’s actually how slime happened.

And it got such a positive response from the audience, that then we wrote a show with nothing but slime in it. [Geoffrey asked me not to tell anybody the ingredients of slime, but did confirm it was all edible and non-toxic.]"

That's amazing. Ah, the 1980s, when there were no safety rules!

The Cast of 'Sabrina, the Teenage Witch' Host Virtual Reunion to Raise Money for Cast4Good

The beloved cast of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch have reunited for a good cause!


Melissa Joan Hart, Elisa Donovan, Caroline Rhea, China Jesusita Shavers, Nate Richert, Beth Broderick and more of the series’ iconic stars teamed up with Cast4Good to bring fans a virtual event to benefit World Vision.

The exciting fan experience aired live on Thursday, May 21 at 11AM PST on the Loop app. The virtual reunion included a live panel, a fan Q&A, and one-on-one video chats with the actors. Fans could snag tickets for the Sabrina, the Teenage Witch event starting May 16th at www.Cast4Good.com.

“The Sabrina cast is excited to be able to catch up virtually with our fans from around the world through Cast4Good, and all for a charity we love and adore, World Vision,” Melissa said in a statement to Access Hollywood.

And Melissa wasn't the only cast member excited for the event!

“It’s always great to see these guys. Never a dull moment. No matter how much time goes by, we always pick up where we left off,” Nate Richert said in a statement.

While Beth Broderick shared, “I always love hanging out with my ‘Sabrina’ family! Don’t miss your chance to join us!! Best Witches!”

“Nobody has to ask us twice to do a reunion– we all really love being together! If we can bring a little joy to the fans while raising funds to combat this terrible pandemic– it makes me feel a little less powerless in this uncertain and challenging time. We are truly all in this together,” Elisa Donovan also explained.

And Jenna Green revealed that fans could expect a very animated, excited reunion, saying, “We’re all big talkers and love nothing more than sharing stories of hilarity and all the crazy adventures we had filming the show. The fact that fans from all over the world will get the chance to see this reunion, live, is refreshing and feels so very special at a time when we can all use a smile and a belly laugh, and the fact that we can raise some money for charity makes it even better!”

Lastly, David Lascher said that he just couldn't wait to see his “old pals.”

“I am so thrilled to reunite with my Sabrina cast mates, who are also some of my best friends, to support World Vision and their Covid-19 relief work. I have the greatest memories from those year on Sabrina at Paramount and I’m excited to share them with the fans as well as see my old pals,” David shared in a statement to Access Hollywood.

During the event, cast reminisced about the hit 90s show, answered fans’ burning questions and even spilled what they took from set!

The event was led by Cast4Good, which is a new fundraising platform that was founded in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The new organization is set to raise money for charitable organizations through global virtual fan fests.

“Cast4Good could not be more excited to have the cast of Sabrina the Teenage Witch back together again to raise money for World Vision’s COVID-19 crisis response efforts. The hugely popular series has a global fan base and we’re excited to bring everyone together during this difficult time and in support of a great cause,” Todd Krim, founder of Cast4Good, said in a statement to Access Hollywood prior to the reunion.

All proceeds from the event will benefit World Vision, a charity that partners with children, families, and their communities to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Sabrina, the Teenage Witch was one of the biggest shows from the ’90s! The hit sitcom, which was based on a 1960s comic-book series, aired for 7 seasons between 1996 and 2003, on ABC in the U.S. and Nickelodeon in the U.K. The series later aired on Nick U.S.A.
