Parker Queenan On Nickelodeon's 'Are You Afraid Of The Dark?: Curse of the Shadows' | CBS Los Angeles

Parker Queenan On Nickelodeon's "Are You Afraid Of The Dark" | CBS Los Angeles

The star of the Nickelodeon series talks with CBS Local's DJ Sixsmith about playing Connor Stevens, getting his first major role in Hollywood and his love of film.

Are You Afraid Of The Dark?: Curse of the Shadows airs Fridays at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon!

Actor from Pleasanton stars in spooky TV classic

Parker Queenan enjoys returning to relax with family, old friends

"Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Nickelodeon kicked off its new season last month, and the first episode begins with Connor, played by Parker Queenan, looking terrified as he steals into the local magic shop.

In "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Parker Queenan plays Connor, the leader of a group of kids who get together to share horror stories-- then the real world becomes as spooky as one of their tales. (Photo courtesy of Nickelodeon)

Queenan, 19, hails from Pleasanton, where he fell in love with movies and filmmaking at an early age.

"I started acting when I was a kid," Queenan said in a phone interview from his home in Los Angeles. "I went to this community theater summer camp."

He continued attending acting camps, eventually meeting the person who became his manager, he recalled. He began to audition long distance but eventually realized that if he wanted to pursue acting, he should move down south.

His folks, Angi and Kevin Queenan, were not the stereotypical stage parents, Parker noted -- they left it up to him but were encouraging when he wanted to give it a go.

"My aunt lived in St. Louis and she was like, 'Let's do it,' and moved to Los Angeles with me," Queenan said.

He was 14 at the time and remembered it being a lot of fun for him, and for his aunt, too.

"It was a really different lifestyle for her and for me," he said. "We started off saying we'd give it one year."

Then he realized he needed to stay longer.

"For a couple of years, I hadn't seen the fruits of it, but I was making progress and my family in Pleasanton was very supportive and said I should continue," he said.

Now Queenan has had roles in "Punky Brewster," "Party of Five" and "Andi Mack," and he is one of the central characters in the second season of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" which is based on the 1990s TV cult classic of the same name.

The series is about a group of kids, led by Connor, who dub themselves the Midnight Society and meet to share horror stories. Then the real world begins to resemble one of their tales.

"One of the reasons this episode was so great is partly due to the chemistry of the cast ... Each character presents a distinct personality trait," read one online review.

Queenan spent a few weeks in Pleasanton at Christmastime after intense, 14-hour days of shooting in Vancouver.

"It was nice to come back and sleep for a couple of days," Queenan said with a laugh.

He also enjoyed seeing his brothers -- Taylor, who lives in San Ramon, and Chandler, who goes to college in Boulder, Colo. -- as well as friends.

"My oldest friends I've had since I was 11 years old, maybe even since I was 4 or 5," Queenan said. "No matter how much success I get, I'm not really treated any differently."

Queenan said filming continues despite the pandemic.

"In the film industry, they pivot really, really well," he said. "No matter how much you put them through, they end up on their feet -- like a cat."

Shooting in Vancouver was better for the budget and also safer, he said, although filming also continues in Hollywood.

"We get tested every day, wear masks and shields, and quarantine wherever we're shooting," Queenan said. "It's very, very safe."

"It's giving jobs to many, many people, not just the people in front of the camera," he added. "Especially in a place like Los Angeles, where the touchstone is movies and cinema, it allows the economy to move a lot smoother."

Queenan said he enjoys his time on the sets and finds that his upbringing in Pleasanton, attending Vintage Hills Elementary and Pleasanton Middle schools, were valuable even as he did independent study once he moved to L.A.

"Lots of people didn't have the social skills I got from those public school years," he said. "That's helped me in my career. A lot of young people learn to be professional and diplomatic but maybe don't know how to relate to their peers."

Relating to his young costars is important, he noted, as he might meet them shortly before filming begins.

"Then, over the next three months, we begin to get close. But in the beginning, there's a certain unknown," he explained.

Queenan is taking college courses and doing independent film studies with an eye toward a future career in writing and directing in addition to acting. But he continues to return to Pleasanton to kick back and relax with family and old friends.

"It's like a perfect getaway," he said. "I love L.A. and the traveling, but it's good to have roots back home where on weekends I can go back for a few days and get to say hi to everybody and see those old cornerstone places."

Dylan Gilmer On 2021 Nickelodeon’s Kid Choice Awards: ‘I’m Going To Be Pumped If I Get This Blimp’

(CBS Local)– The Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Awards are this Saturday, March 13 and former Nick star Kenan Thompson hosts this year’s virtual show. While things will look a little different than normal, the KCA’s are still one of the biggest nights in entertainment and actor and rapper Dylan Gilmer is looking to pull off the win in the Favorite Male TV Star category.

Gilmer stars in “Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan” on Nickelodeon and has some steep competition in his category. The actor and rapper is joined by Iain Armitage from CBS’ “Young Sheldon,” Joshua Bassett from “High School Musical: The Musical Series,” Caleb McLaughlin & Finn Wolfhard from “Stranger Things” and Jace Norman from “Henry Danger.”

CBS Local caught up with Gilmer to discuss the KCA’s, working with Tyler Perry and being a kid actor in Hollywood.

“I was with my mom and doing homework when I found out,” said Gilmer, in an interview with CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “Then my father called me out of nowhere and told me that I was nominated. I was so happy and mind-blown because I grew up watching Nickelodeon’s Kid Choice Awards and now I’m in it and I’m nominated for something. That’s just amazing.”

Gilmer’s show “Young Dylan” is about an affluent family’s world being changed forever when their nephew, who is an aspiring hip-hop star, arrives unannounced. Tyler Perry is the creator and executive producer of the series and Gilmer has enjoyed working with one of the best showrunners in Hollywood.

“Ellen DeGeneres hooked me up with Tyler Perry and Nickelodeon gave me my own show. I was just mind-blown at that time. I couldn’t believe it,” said Gilmer. “I’ve learned a lot of lessons from Tyler Perry. He’s such a hard worker, he gives back to his community, he always comes on set just to talk to us and give us some liners. He’s such a dedicated worker and I want to be like him one day.”

The Kids Choice Awards begin at 7:30pm EST on Saturday and Nickelodeon fans will be treated to appearances by Justin Bieber, LeBron James, Billie Eillish, Ariana Grande, Gal Gadot and many other celebrities. Gilmer is hoping he gets his name called by one of these presenters.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Cast Interviews

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run Cast Interviews | CinemaBlend

"The SpongeBob Move: Sponge on the Run voice actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy) and Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Reggie Watts (Chancellor) and writer/director Tim Hill discuss their upcoming SpongeBob movie with CinemaBlend's Jeff McCobb. They chat about their favorite SpongeBob songs, how they nabbed Keanu Reeves and Snoop Dogg for the film, why adults still love SpongeBob and more.

"After multiple delays and a new release strategy, "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run" will finally see its United States debut when it premieres on the new Paramount+ streaming service on March 4."

Why Adults Still Watch SpongeBob, According To SpongeBob Voice Tom Kenny

To say that Spongebob Squarepants is a gigantic success would be an understatement. In a world where few cartoons make it past just a handful of seasons, new episodes of Spongebob Squarepants are still being churned out over 20 years after its premiere on Nickelodeon, and The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run marks our third time following along with the absorbent, yellow and porous protagonist in a cinematic setting. Obviously Spongebob Squarepants’ chief demographic is still kids, but Tom Kenny, who’s voiced the eponymous protagonist since the beginning, has an interesting take on why adults continue to keep tabs on the franchise.

While speaking with CinemaBlend’s own Jeff McCobb about The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Tom Kenny noted that the people who grew up with Spongebob Squarepants in its earliest years are now adults, so there’s a “comfort food” factor with their view on the show. But more importantly, with the COVID-19 pandemic still raging, Kenny posited that these adults are looking content that’s “kind of sweet and funny and stupid and makes me laugh” to watch, as opposed to continually true crime documentaries or shows like Chernobyl. As far as Spongebob’s broad appeal goes, Kenny said the following:

"You know, it really is just classic comedy. I mean, there’s not a whole lot of snark, and the comedy comes from the characters. And it’s surreal, but it’s also quite real in its own weird way. Like, the characters are always very true to themselves and the universe kind of has its own rules."

While Spongebob Squarepants has certainly gone through a number of changes over the years, the show is still delivering the same kind of stories it did starting in 1999. So Tom Kenny’s “comfort food” comparison makes sense for the folks who watched the Nickelodeon series as a child. Even if you haven’t seen a Spongebob episode in over a decade, you can just tune into a random episode n any given day and still easily follow along with the title character as he gets embroiled in shenanigans with characters like Patrick, Squidward, Sandy and Mr. Krabs.

And while I enjoy serious and serialized television as much as the next person, I agree with Tom Kenny that a steady diet of such programming isn’t necessarily wise, especially in these troubling times. So should you get tired of repeat viewings of The Office or Schitt’s Creek, you’re always welcome to turn to Spongebob Squarepants for comedy. 265 episodes across 13 seasons will certainly keep you occupied for a while.

On the other hand, if you’re only wanting to dip your toes back in the Spongebob Squarepants pool for a few hours, you can check out The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which features talents like Keanu Reeves, Awkwafina, Snoop Dogg, Danny Trejo, Tiffany Haddish and Reggie Watts. It’s also worth noting that the Spongebob franchise recently expanded with the prequel series Kamp Koral: Spongebob’s Under Years, and The Patrick Star Show will follow at a later date.

Those interested in watching The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run can find it on Paramount+. [...]

Nickelodeon Reportedly Acquires Rights to 'The Manny Files' YA Novel

Nickelodeon has reportedly acquired the rights to adapt The Manny Files, the award-winning preteen novel from author Christian Burch!

Manny /ma·ne/ n
A male nanny or babysitter, known to be handsome, fabulous, and a lover of eighties music

"Be interesting."

That's what the manny tells Keats Dalinger the first time he packs Keats's school lunch, but for Keats that's not always the easiest thing to do. Even though he's the only boy at home, it always feels like no one ever remembers him. His sisters are everywhere! Lulu is the smart one, India is the creative one, and Belly . . . well, Belly is the naked one. And the baby. School isn't much better. There, he's the shortest kid in the entire class.

But now the manny is the Dalinger's new babysitter, and things are starting to look up. It seems as though the manny always knows the right thing to do. Not everyone likes the manny as much as Keats does, however. Lulu finds the manny embarrassing, and she's started to make a list of all the crazy things that he does, such as serenading the kids with "La Cucaracha" from the front yard or wearing underwear on his head or meeting the school bus with Belly, dressed as limo drivers. Keats is worried. What if Lulu's "Manny Files" makes his parents fire the manny? Who will teach him how to be interesting then?

The Manny Files was first published in 2006 and was followed up in 2008 with the sequel Hit the Road, Manny.

The news comes as Nickelodeon is leaning heavily into children's literature for new content. The network is adapting Lincoln Peirce's Big Nate comic strip and best-selling children’s book into a new CG-animated series, and has optioned Peirce's follow-up series Max & the Midknights for a TV show and/or movie. Nickelodeon is also said to be developing Dana Simpson’s comic strip Phoebe and Her Unicorn into a multi-platform franchise across an TV animated series, movies and more, and in 2019, fully acquired the Garfield franchise.

The curtains have risen on Nickelodeon’s new mockumentary-style comedy series Drama Club.  From creators and executive producers Monica Sherer and Madeline Whitby (All That, Betch), the series follows a group of middle schoolers as they shine a light on the inner workings of their school’s overlooked drama club.  Drama Club (10 half-hour episodes) premieres Friday, March 26 on YTV in Canada.

In the premiere episode of Drama Club, the Tookus Middle School Drama Club has a new student director who is excited to take over, change the school’s perception of the club, and earn their new principal’s support. However, when their choreographer suffers an injury, the kids quickly realize that their only hope to save the situation is to turn to a rival on their school’s beloved football team for help.

Drama Club stars Telci Huynh (God Friended Me) as “Mack,” Nathan Janak (All That) as “Oliver,” Lili Brennan (Silicon Valley) as “Darcy,” Kensington Tallman (Side Hustle) as “Bianca,” Chase Vacnin (The Many Saints of Newark) as “Bench” and Artyon Celestine (Dancing with the Stars: Juniors) as “Skip.”

Drama Club is produced by Awesomeness (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Trinkets, PEN15), with Shelley Zimmerman and Brin Lukens serving as executive producers. Eric Falconer (How I Met Your Mother, Blue Mountain State) serves as executive producer and showrunner. The series premiere is directed by Nancy Hower (Teachers, Those Who Can’t). Production of Drama Club for Nickelodeon and Awesomeness is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content; and Zack Olin, Senior Vice President, Live Action.

Drama Club will make its world premiere digitally in the U.S. on Nickelodeon's Nick app and Nick.com on Saturday, March 13, followed by an encore presentation airing on Nickelodeon on Saturday, March 20, at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT).
