How Nickelodeon Taps Millennial Nostalgia to Bring Back the '90s

CHICAGO, IL: Nickelodeon, the number-one entertainment brand for kids and families, is tapping into the power of nostalgia in a bid to strengthen it's relationship with millennial consumers who retain an abiding passion for the television shows of their youth.


Jennifer Tracy, Nickelodeon’s Senior Vice President (SVP)/partner marketing and creative advertising, discussed this subject at Association of National Advertisers’ (ANA) 2018 Brand Activation Conference.

And she reported that the brand has reflected millennials’ fond memories of Nickelodeon programming from their childhood – such as Double Dare, Hey Arnold! and Rugrats – to foster new connections with this audience.

The insights behind this strategy included everything from social-media sharing, discovering that millennials were throwing themed costume parties based around their favorite Nickelodeon shows, and even a push from interns in this demographic.

“We were so inspired by the [enthusiasm] that we created a new on-air/social-content programming block called ‘The Nick Splat,’” Tracy said. (For more, read WARC’s in-depth report: Mountain Dew, Visioncare and Nickelodeon meet millennials in the ’90s.)

This offering, now titled NickSplat, features classic mid-to-late 1980s, 1990s, and early-to-mid 2000s children's programming – and rapidly attracted 35 million fans to indicate their support.

Millennials “expect to build brand love through content that lives on screens, but they also now expect for us to reach them beyond screens,” Tracy related.

Social content in support of this effort, she continued, popped up from a variety of sources: “It could be original content. Or it could be short snippets from existing shows,” she added.

“It could be us just calling [on] our fans to submit their own kind of social content inspired by the ’90s. And, of course, we do contests, giveaways and other things that build that affinity.

“The driver behind it all was that people were asking us to bring back the '90s. We felt it was something that we really needed to pay attention to.”

Live events and activations targeted at the same cohort – and run alongside partners such as Mountain Dew, the beverage brand owned by PepsiCo, and Viacom, the media company – have given this mission an extra dimension.

“They really want those real-life experiences,” said Tracy, “so the question for us became, ‘How do we re-imagine the brand experience within its existing content and beyond it?’”

Nickelodeon Unveils First-Look At 'Butterbean's Cafe' At Licensing Expo 2018 [Updated]

To celebrate the upcoming launch of Butterbean's Cafe, Nickelodeon recently unveiled a super first-look at the networks upcoming brand-new animated preschool series at Licensing Expo 2018 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, NV!


Butterbean's Cafe (40 episodes) centers on a fairy named Butterbean and her adventures running the neighborhood café with her friends. Butterbean’s Cafe features creative cooking, and a social-emotional curriculum that highlights entrepreneurial and leadership skills. The currently confirmed characters in the show are: Butterbean, Keesha, Cricket, Jasper, Ms. Marmalady, Poppy, Miss Honeybook and Reuben. Created by Jonny Belt and Robert Scull, the creators of Bubble Guppies, the series is produced by Brown Bag Films (Peter Rabbit) in Ireland, and is slated to launch during Fall 2018.

Peep! Peep! Everyone’s favorite Number 1 Blue Engine and the Island of Sodor come to life on Friday, July 27, 2018 with the grand opening of Thomas Town™. Located within Kennywood Park, one of the world’s most renowned family amusement parks, Thomas Town features five rides including a train ride with Thomas, a live stage show, themed play and entertainment areas, retail store and more. It will be the second-largest permanent Thomas & Friends™ attraction in North America.

Set on a bluff overlooking the Monongahela River and the historic Edgar Thomson Steel Works in nearby Braddock, Thomas & Friends debuts a new home in Steel City. Thomas Town is one of the largest single-year additions in Kennywood’s 120-year history, adding five new family rides, plus retheming The Olde Kennywood Rail Road into a Thomas & Friends story. Nickelodeon Russia To Celebrate 'День, когда пора играть 2018' On Sunday 26th August 2018

Nickelodeon Russia (Россия) has announced that on Sunday 26th August 2018, the number-one kids channel in Russia will celebrate the channels sixth annual День, когда пора играть, Nickelodeon Россия's local version of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play, in partnership with Ростелеком!


Nickelodeon is concerned about the health, well-being and development of children all around the world. День, когда пора играть 2018 aims to remind everyone how important outdoor exercise is, and how having fun outdoors and being in touch with nature nurtures better physical, emotional and cognitive development in children.

On Sunday 26th August 2018, Nickelodeon will go dark on-air for six hours between 12:00-18:00 to encourage children across Russia to go outside into the fresh air and play with their family and friends, whether in a garden, in a park or at a playground.


To celebrate, Nickelodeon has partnered with Ростелеком to launch a brand-new competition in which fans can win amazing prizes for being the most creative. Viewers are invited to team up with their friends and visit the contest's official website, igraem.nickelodeon.ru to design and create a collage featuring a mix their own photos and their favourite Nickelodeon characters. There'll be two winning teams: One decided by fans who have the chance to vote for their favourite mash-ups online at igraem.nickelodeon.ru, and one voted for by a professional jury. Young subscribers to Ростелеком who enter the competition will receive additional 'likes', which will be taken into account when tallying up the votes to determine the winning teams. Each member of both winning teams will receive a video games console and a online gaming subscription, allowing them to play games online with their friends.

Additionally, Nickelodeon will award the 100th team that registers everyday with a special День, когда пора играть goody bag, which includes crayons for drawing, beach and soccer balls, a skipping rope, a board game, a Frisbee, and gifts from Nickelodeon's День, когда пора играть partner, Ростелеком.

Fans can enter Nickelodeon's День, когда пора играть contest up until Sunday 26th August 2018, the last Sunday of summer and the day of День, когда пора играть 2018, in which Nickelodeon will once again suspend programming between 12:00-18:00 MCK to encourage viewers to go outside and play with their friends and family. On social media, Nickelodeon will ask fans to send them photos using the hashtags #nickelodeon and #денькогдапораиграть showing how they are spending День, когда пора играть 2018 for the chance to win instant print cameras.

When Nickelodeon comes back on-air at 18:00 MCK, Nickelodeon will treat viewers to the special The Loud House episode "Tripped!", in which, during a road trip to their vacation destination, everything that can go wrong for the family does!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are rising from their sewer lair this October for a new season on Nickelodeon. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a complete reimagining that follows the band of brothers as they encounter new allies and villains and discover a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City.

In the half-hour launch episode, “Mystic Mayhem,” the Turtles discover for the first time that they’re not the weirdest things in New York.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be available on Nickelodeon from Monday, 1st of October at 5pm AEST.

Fans can also catch the full first episode, in advance, on the Nick Play app, the Foxtel Kids app and Fetch catch up on Wednesday, 1st of August.


The 2D-animated series stars the voice talent of Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raph, a jagged-shelled snapping turtle; Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leo, a red-eared slider turtle; Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donnie, a soft-shell turtle; Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Mikey, a box turtle; Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil, a street savvy native New Yorker; Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Splinter, father figure and sensei to the Turtles; and WWE Superstar John Cena as the villainous, Baron Draxum.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles follows the Turtles on all-new adventures as they master new powers, encounter absurd mutants and battle bizarre villains, each with their own motivations. Ranging from mystics, mutants and madmen, new creatures and villains emerge to take on Raph, Leo, Donnie and Mikey in battles across New York City. From the tallest skyscraper to the dankest sewer drain, the brothers learn to work together and navigate the perils of New York City and the hidden realms below in order to fulfill their destiny to become a team of heroes.

The line-up of guest stars voicing these new mutants and bizarre villains includes: Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) as Big Mama, a gigantic spider mutant; John Michael Higgins (Pitch Perfect) as Warren Stone, a former news anchor turned mutant earthworm; Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Albearto, a singing, birthday-loving rampaging robot; Sam Richardson and Tim Simons (Veep) as Huginn and Muninn, gargoyles who are never far from their master, Baron Draxum; John Rotten Lydon (Public Image Ltd ‘PiL’ and Sex Pistols) as Meat Sweats, a power-hungry mutant pig; Rhys Darby (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) as Hypno-Potamus, a mutant magician/hippo; and Jorge Gutierrez (El Tigre) as Ghostbear, a human pro-wrestler champion with a taste for cheating.

In addition, Rob Paulsen (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and Maurice LaMarche (Animaniacs) reunite behind the mic as Foot Lieutenant, the de-facto leader of the Foot Clan, and Foot Brute, the Foot Lieutenant’s right hand man.

The new 26-episode series is co-executive produced by Andy Suriano (character designer, Samurai Jack) and Ant Ward (supervising producer, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) at Nickelodeon in Burbank. Veteran animation industry voice actor Rob Paulsen is voice directing the series.
