'SpongeBob SquarePants' Star Tom Kenny is 'Proud' That His Character is an LGBTQ+ Ally

'SpongeBob SquarePants' star Tom Kenny is 'proud' that his character is an LGBTQ+ ally

Last summer, Nickelodeon made major waves with a Pride Month tweet that identified everyone's favorite animated sea sponge, SpongeBob SquarePants, as an LGBTQ+ ally. The Bikini Bottom-dwelling, Krabby Patty-flipping SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny) was prominently featured alongside the network's other established LGBTQ characters: Korra from the hit animated series, The Legend of Korra, and Henry Danger & Danger Force star Michael D. Cohen, who described his transgender journey to Time magazine in 2019.

And Kenny couldn't be happier that his animated counterpart has officially come out as an ally. "I am proud that people of all stripes — including people who might at times feel disenfranchised — look to SpongeBob as someone they can identify with and who is inspiration," the actor told Yahoo Entertainment while discussing the third SpongeBob feature film, Sponge on the Run, which is now available to stream on Paramount+. The always-animated Kenny can't resist breaking into his alter ego's adorable voice to signal his approval. "That really warms my little holy heart." (Watch Yahoo! Entertainment's video interview here!)

At the same time, SpongeBob's inclusion in Nickelodeon's social media post reignited the decades-old debate over the character's own sexual orientation — a debate that makes Kenny roll his eyes. "It's just such nonsense," he says of conservative critics like Focus on the Family founder, James Dobson, who accused SpongeBob of appearing in a "pro-homosexual video" in 2005. "It's not even really a part of it. I understand in a different kind of show it would be an issue, but when it's just a comedy? Like when you see the Three Stooges laying in a bed together, you aren't like, 'Wow I wonder if Larry and Moe are an item?' It's just so outside the universe that it's kind of ridiculous. But we do live in a world where anything that can be used as a distracting culture war dividing wedge will be."

Kenny's castmates agree that life is much simpler in their version of life under the sea. "There's no culture war in Bikini Bottom, c'mon," scoffs Clancy Brown, who voices the crusty Mr. Krabs. Adds Bill Fagerbakke — the voice of SpongeBob's best pal and one-time co-parent, Patrick Star — "The world of Bikini Bottom is such its own universe that it's only natural that people are going to latch onto it and bring it into their own universe. That's what good entertainment does, I guess."

Carolyn Lawrence credits late SpongeBob creator, Stephen Hillenburg, with creating an animated world that was inclusive and diverse from the show's 1999 premiere. "It still blows my mind just how amazing he really was," she says of Hillenburg, who always maintained that his characters were asexual. (Hillenburg died in 2018 after being diagnosed with ALS.) "How much life he gave everything, not just in his writing and characters and art, but in how he cast the show, too." For his part, Kenny describes his character's creator as a "warm and loving person," adding: "I think that came out in the show. He created this place that people want to go to and hang out in. It's like the bar in Cheers!"

Sponge on the Run writer/director Tim Hill is one of the artists tasked with carrying on Hillenburg's legacy, and he says that he purposefully avoids the culture war trap. "People are going to think what they think, and they're going to drive some opinion forward — especially in the echo chamber of social media," he says. "These things get blown out of proportion... and don't really matter that much for me. I'm kind of gender blind or whatever when it comes to the character: It's more about what's in their heart for me." And, like Hillenburg, Kenny notes that SpongeBob's heart doesn't have room for romantic feelings anyway. "SpongeBob doesn't really feel lust: He's not like Pepé Le Pew! It's not a part of who he is."

'SpongeBob' EP Explains Why Patrick's Parents Look Different in 'The Patrick Star Show'

Nickelodeon today (March 4) announced The Patrick Star Show, a brand new spin-off from SpongeBob SquarePants starring SpongeBob's BFF, Patrick Star. The animated family comedy series will follow Patrick and the rest of his family as they are constantly disrupted by Patrick’s wild whims and surreal imagination.

Patrick's family in 'The Patrick Star Show'

Among the members of Patrick's family to feature in The Patrick Star Show will be his parents. However, Patrick's mom and dad have had a big makeover since we last saw them!

In the original SpongeBob series, Patrick's parents are named Margie Bunny Star and Herb Cecil Star. However, in The Patrick Star Show, Patrick's parents will be called by their middle names, Bunny and Cecil, instead.

Patrick's parents in SpongeBob SquarePants.

That's not the only major change. In SpongeBob, Patrick's parents look very much like him, except wearing a dress and having a moustache. However, in The Patrick Star Show, Bunny and Cecil will look totally different!

Vincent Waller, who co-executive produces both series, explained why Patrick's parents will have a different design in The Patrick Star Show on Twitter:

"Cecil & Bunny, they are his mom and dad. We felt the original iterations of the characters, while they worked for that episode, they were boring as characters. They were NOT entertaining or fun. These two are so much more fun. I can't wait till you get to meet them."

The Patrick Star Show follows a younger Patrick Star living at home with his family, where he hosts his own show for the neighborhood from his television-turned-bedroom. His little sister, Squidina, works behind the scenes to make sure Patrick’s show is always running smoothly, while his parents, Bunny and Cecil and his grandpa, GrandPat, each support Patrick in their own hilariously absurd ways. The Star family’s unpredictable adventures often inform, integrate, and sometimes even interfere with Patrick’s TV show, but one thing is for sure: his bizarre life always makes for great television!

Initially picked up for 13 episodes, The Patrick Star Show is set to premiere on Nickelodeon this summer!

Longtime voice of Patrick Star, Bill Fagerbakke lends his voice as the young adult Patrick alongside new cast members: Tom Wilson (SpongeBob SquarePants, Back to the Future) as Cecil Star, Patrick’s fun-loving, happy-go-lucky dad who always puts his family first;  Cree Summer (Rugrats, A Different World, Inspector Gadget) as Bunny Star, Patrick’s loving, sea star mom who is a kooky oddball; Jill Talley (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Squidina Star, Patrick’s eight-year-old little sister who sees herself as Patrick’s executive producer for his imaginary TV show; and Dana Snyder (The Thundermans, Welcome to the Wayne, The Penguins of Madagascar, Chowder) as GrandPat Star, Patrick’s genius grandpat, the most intelligent member of the Star family. Summer also voices Grandma Tentacles, Squidward’s grandma.

Additional cast members include veteran actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton).

Marc Ceccarelli (SpongeBob SquarePants), Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jennie Monica (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers of the series.  The Patrick Star Show is developed for television by Claudia Spinelli, SVP of Animation Development, Nickelodeon, with production overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series, Animation, Nickelodeon.

'Kamp Koral' EPs Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller Talk About the Future of Original 'SpongeBob' Series

The EPs for Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years talk about the making of the Paramount+ series

SpongeBob SquarePants Has its First Spin-Off Series. Does This Spell the End of the Original?

For the first time in its 20-plus year history, SpongeBob SquarePants has a spin-off, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. The series follows our Bikini Bottom pals at sleep-away camp when they were only 10 years old, brushing up against the wilderness and learning virtues like patience and resisting sugar-y temptations.

The first six episodes of the series are out now on Paramount+, with another 20 episodes dropping at a later date.

"They're all kind of purer versions of themselves," co-executive producer Marc Ceccarelli told EW. "Patrick's dumber than he is already, if that's even possible. SpongeBob is even more naive than he is in the original series."

Kamp Koral features many of the voices you've been familiar with since SpongeBob SquarePants began in 1999, including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy, and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton.

The character's job titles have changed, of course. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy are camp goers. Squidward is a junior counselor, Mrs. Puff is an arts and crafts teacher, and Krabs runs the entire camp. If you can believe it, Plankton runs the food shack.

Ceccarelli worked alongside co-executive producers Vincent Waller and Jennie Monica (all of whom have experience as EP's on the original series) to get the CG Kamp Koral up and running.

When asked if the launch of Kamp Koral could mean a transition away from the long-running Nickelodeon series, which has spawned three movies and 13 seasons of adventures, Ceccarelli and Waller said no chance.

"Oh, no, no, we love drawing 2-D," Waller says. "We're hoping [both series] go on for as long as people want to watch it."

Much has stayed status quo at the Burbank animation studio despite the addition of a new series. The story writers and storyboard artists are mostly from the same team, Ceccarelli says. The only exception is a new group in charge of the CG, an additional process of modeling that can mean an episode will take about 9 months to finish, Waller says.

The idea for Kamp Koral came out of a flashback sequence in the new SpongeBob SquarePants movie, Sponge on the Run. The sequence features Sandy on the brink of losing her best friend to the narcissistic King Poseidon. With a little storytelling magic, Sandy recalls what it was like to first meet the gang, and the innocence they all had about the world around them.

There are some key differences between the two series, despite their similarities. The spin-off brings on two new characters, Nobby (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, Rocko's Modern Life, The Casagrandes) and Narlene (Kate Higgins, Blaze and the Monster Machines), spunky yet spontaneous narwhal siblings who live in the woods surrounding the camp. The duo is introduced in the second episode when the gang fall prey to the Sugar Squeeze, a glittery substance the narwhals present to them that makes them bounce off the walls.

There's also a wardrobe update. SpongeBob gets to wear a new Boy Scout-esque neckerchief. Patrick, meanwhile, finally gets to wear a shirt.

Squidward is also more open to being friends with SpongeBob and Patrick at the camp, as seen in episode 2 when they decide to play Tag. "Life hasn't yet beaten him down. We also knew that you know, sticking him in a cabin with SpongeBob and Patrick, it was going to start," Waller jokes.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run are now streaming on Paramount+/

An Endless Summer of Cartoon Fun: ‘Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years’

Executive producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller discuss Nickelodeon’s first-ever ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ spinoff series, a prequel that follows 10-year-old SpongeBob, his pals, and their summertime sleepaway camp hijinks, premiering today on the new Paramount+ streaming platform.

First shared with an extended, slime-filled tease during halftime of the January 10 NFL Wild Card Game, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Nickelodeon’s first-ever spinoff series for their hugely successful SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, launches today on the brand-new Paramount+ streaming platform.

The original 13-episode 3D/CG-animated prequel series follows 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals during an endless summer of fun, where they spend their time building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest sleepaway camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. It’s got all the funny gags and goofy mayhem you’d expect. And then some. The first six episodes hit the streamer today; the rest of Season 1 will roll out on the platform at later dates yet to be announced.

The new series features long-time franchise stars Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) reprising their iconic roles. Carlos Alazraqui (The Casagrandes) and Kate Higgins (Blaze and the Monster Machines) join as new characters Nobby and Narlene, narwhal siblings who live in the woods surrounding the camp.

SpongeBob franchise veterans Marc Ceccarelli (SpongeBob SquarePants), Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jennie Monica (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers of the series; it’s produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, California, and overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series Animation, Nickelodeon.

SpongeBob SquarePants was created by Stephen Hillenburg, who sadly passed away from ALS in 2018. And what a storied franchise he birthed. According to the network, since launching on July 17, 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has been the number-one animated series on TV for the last 18 years; it has spawned several theatrical releases, including The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which also premieres today on Paramount+, a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, a behemoth merchandising empire and a huge global fan base. The series is the most widely distributed property in ViacomCBS Networks International history, seen in more than 170 countries and territories, translated into 30+ languages, while averaging more than 100 million total viewers every month.

As co-executive producer (co-showrunner), Ceccarelli helped develop the Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years world, the new characters, and locations. He oversaw and contributed to the writing, boarding, and direction of each episode as well as all the post-production creative decisions. Referring to his work with Ceccarelli, Waller notes, “We have been in charge of creating all things SpongeBob since season 10. [On the new show] Our main duty was to explore a portion of SpongeBob’s life, years before he was everyone’s favorite fry cook, while being true to the level and style of comedy the fans have grown to expect. As always, we want parents to be able to watch with their kids and laugh as hard as their kids do. Kamp Koral is definitely not a ‘just for the kiddies’ show.”

Waller goes on to say, “The idea for the series was sparked by a flashback scene in the most recent movie. Having worked on the original show for years, we had strong opinions about how the new show should be approached. With our writers, we calculated the hierarchy of the camp and what age our characters needed to be for it to make sense in our existing timeline. We divided the characters by age and felt that Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff should be in charge with Plankton working as the fry cook trying to earn money to pay for college - no one at Kamp knows he also has a secret laboratory located below the canteen.”

“Squidward, Larry the Lobster, and Bubble Bass have always seemed to be a little older than SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy, so making them counselors felt like a perfect fit,” he continues. “Deciding which campers would go in which cabin was fairly simple. To mirror the relationships established in the original show, we knew SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward would need to share a cabin. Bubble Bass would obviously be in charge of the nerd cabin, Larry in charge of the jocks, and, of course, the Anchovies have a cabin of their own. You know, because ‘the smell, the smelly smell that smells.’”

The showrunners were determined to make Kamp Koral work for the same all-ages audience that the original show is made for. This meant aging the characters up from the movie versions and using the original voice cast, who can more easily deliver the kind of comedy everyone is familiar with. “We also tried to copy as much of the 2D show’s visual language as we could,” Ceccarelli says. “This was quite difficult since TV animation production [using 3D/CG] isn’t used to the kinds of extreme expressions and slapstick surreal humor we love to do on SpongeBob SquarePants. Luckily, we have a great team of CG veterans who were all itching to try something fun and new.”

Finding enough artists to produce 13-episodes of 3D/CG on a tight schedule wasn’t easy. “The main challenge was finding a crew capable of building a new world, from the sand up to the beautiful ocean/sky above our Kampers, at breakneck speed to have our show premiere in March,” Waller reveals. “And boy, did we luck out! At every level, they have jumped at the chance to make Kamp Koral true to the original show, and then expand on that in ways only CG can. Having seen other CG TV shows, we were very worried we wouldn’t be able to hit the same high mark when it comes to the characters’ acting and posing. But those challenges excited the crew, and they came up with innovations to hit the wild and varied expressions our storyboard artists were throwing at them.”

While focusing their attention on designing and producing a show that successfully captured the look and feel of the long-running 2D series in 3D/CG animation, the showrunners also had to ensure they embraced and captured the essence and tone of the beloved characters, their relationships, and the humor in their actions. To Ceccarelli, that meant following a simple formula. “We’ve never really been that concerned with continuity on our shows,” he says. “We tend to like the cartoons in the classic series to be unencumbered by chronological episodic storylines. So, to us, this is just another funny cartoony cartoon about our silly characters and the goofy situations they get into. We mostly tried to keep the characters’ personalities as close to the originals as possible. In some ways their funny quirks are even more pronounced in their younger, purer forms.”

“SpongeBob is still SpongeBob, but if you can believe it, a little more naïve and less worldly than his older lovable self,” Waller adds. “Patrick is also less worldly, and he has no awareness of other people’s boundaries. Squidward has yet to blossom into his full curmudgeon, but sharing a cabin with SpongeBob and Patrick will bring his inner curmudgeon to the surface. Unlike the other kids at Kamp, Sandy Cheeks is not there just for the summer fun. She’s on a very special mission that you’ll need to watch the show to learn! We had free reign developing the lush world of Kamp Koral, Lake Yuckymuck, and the wild wooly creatures who reside within, as well as the mysterious and mischievous folk that live just beyond the Kamp perimeter.”

“SpongeBob isn’t the expert jellyfisher that we know from the classic series,” Ceccarelli shares about the show’s inaugural season. “Patrick is even more reckless about the things he’ll attempt to eat. He might eat a truck or possibly be eaten by one. Sandy will meet some folks who are even more countrified than she is. An Anchovy might say moop’ instead of ‘meep.’ There’s going to a forest full of giant kelp and wild animals and maybe a nudist camp…? All kinds of crazy stuff!”

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years premieres today on the new Paramount+ streaming platform.

Visiting SpongeBob and Friends’ Early Years in 'Kamp Koral'

After more than two decades ruling the airwaves from his undersea bromeliad home, SpongeBob SquarePants is finally getting a spinoff show that will give viewers a fuller understanding of their porous pal’s misspent youth.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years debuts its 13-episode first season March 4 on the new Paramount+ streaming service, the same day that the feature that inspired it — The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run — gets its U.S. debut on the same service. Loyal SpongeBob viewers will be glad to know that the original’s creative hands are also guiding Kamp Koral, which is co-executive produced by Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller and Jennie Monica, and reunites original series voice cast members Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, Rodger Bumpass as Squidward, Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton.

The CG-animated show puts younger versions of these classic characters into the pressure cooker of summer camp, providing new creative opportunities for the show’s veteran creators.

“The nice thing about camp is that it’s an entirely different world with an entirely different set of dials and whistles we can use on SpongeBob,” Waller told Animation Magazine.

“We were also able to introduce some new characters into this world, too, that allowed us more weird or different dynamics than we usually do,” says Ceccarelli. “It’s like a jumpstart to our creativity, putting somebody in a different space like that.”

Vincent Waller and Marc Ceccarelli

Return of the Comedy Champs

Ceccarelli and Waller wanted the show to retain the broad appeal and quality of the original series, and wanted to steer clear of being perceived as a “babies” version of the show. So while Sponge on the Run used child actors for the younger versions of SpongeBob and pals, the original series cast returned for Kamp Koral.

Waller says there was some trepidation among the cast at first about the idea, but once they read the scripts and saw the visuals, they were all in. “They’re like, ‘Okay, all right, we’re doing the same thing, it’s just shaped a little bit different and fun to look at in a different way,’” he says.

“Some of them are aging themselves down vocally and a few of the other ones we do a little bit of pitch magic to them, to get them into a younger-ish sort of area — but it’s still our comedy actors, you know, being able to do the kind of comedy that we’re used to doing with them,” says Ceccarelli.

The premise puts the characters into what Ceccarelli describes as a bit of a pressure cooker. “All the kids are kind of trapped in the same environment,” he says. “Especially our leads — we put them all in the same cabin.”

Outside the camp, there are some wild hillbilly type characters, including narwhal siblings Nobby and Narlene, voiced respectively by Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko's Modern LifeThe Casagrandes) and Kate Higgins (Blaze and the Monster Machines). Ceccarelli describes them as tricksters: “They come in and are constantly messing with the kids, but the kids love them because they’re so genuine.”

Rodger Bumpass, who voices Squidward, says there was some discussion early on about whether the actors would try to pitch up their voices. “But we decided that we would just do our regular acting for the characters, and that helps us,” he says.

Kamp Koral casts Squidward as a junior counselor, which plays perfectly to the character’s foibles. “He’s in something of a position of authority, as opposed to his position at the Krusty Krab, and being ever so slightly older than the rest of the kids, he gets to wield his power over them, and basically it just translates as another arena for his frustration,” says Bumpass. “It’s a wonderful consistency with the performance of Squidward from the classic show, but with nuances that helped me spread my wings as far as different things to do in this show.”

Rodger Bumpass

Kamp Koral deviates from the original by using CG animation instead of traditional 2D. Waller says he was nervous about the quality of CG animation going into the project, but his concerns were put to rest by the quality of work produced by the show’s India-based crew at Technicolor.

“As soon as I saw what we’d cobbled together with our new amazing crew — SpongeBob and Patrick standing in their cabin, at their camp —  I wanted to go and sit in that cabin, I wanted to go and smell that wood. I wanted to go be there,” he says.

“I’ve actually been surprised at how much of the aesthetics of 2D that we love, that we’ve been able to actually port over to the CG world,” says Ceccarelli. Technology allows the show’s animators to sculpt and alter digital models themselves, where previously the same effect would have required the construction of new or specialized models.

“That’s really opened up all kinds of possibilities to try and get some of the bigger, cartoonier types of expressions and movements that we love to do in the 2D show,” Ceccarelli says.

Bigger Elasticity

Ceccarelli lauds the animators’ ability to translate the look and feel of the original into CG. “We’re trying to have the same sort of crazy, wild posing that you get in the regular 2D show,” he says. ”It’s gonna look a lot different than a lot of CG shows out there, because our models are so elastic, and we do so much with them in an attempt to bring a lot of the same kind of humor out of the visuals.”

Bumpass says he loves the nuances that come from the CG style, citing a moment where Squidward has an Ed Norton from The Honeymooners moment in which he prepares to play a horn by readying his mouth with exaggerated lip movements that looked great and gave him a chance to play with sound. “They just go on into abstraction about it and I love those beats,” he says.

Incorporating unusual and low-tech effects is a hallmark of the original series, and continues with Kamp Koral. “Don’t be surprised if everybody turns into a puppet in one scene, or there’s a live-action person matted into an episode where you wouldn’t expect them to be,” says Ceccarelli. ”We’re always trying to find ways of making it funkier and more multimedia.”

But at the end of the day, what makes Kamp Koral work is the same thing that makes the original SpongeBob SquarePants work: Making kids and adults laugh.

“We want your parents to be able to sit next to you and watch it and laugh,” says Waller. “Maybe they get a different joke than you do, but they’re laughing at the same time you’re laughing.”

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years premieres on the new Paramount+ streaming service on March 4, and will air on Nickelodeon later this year.
