Cowabunga! The original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series is coming to Nickelodeon.

Update - Read the official press release below for details:

In advance of the Paramount Pictures release of the brand-new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem theatrical film, exclusively in theaters on August 2, Nickelodeon is expanding the beloved franchise again with the acquisition of the original 1987 animated Fred Wolf TMNT series (193 x 22-min episodes, 1987-1996).

Under the deal, Nickelodeon has acquired global rights to the storied series, which follows the adventures of the beloved characters—Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo—as they battle the Shredder, Krang and other villains and criminals. The series is slated to debut digitally later this month in the U.S., followed by Nickelodeon branded channels and digital platforms internationally.

The news was revealed today during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2023. The Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon movie follows the Turtle brothers as they set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts after years of being sheltered from the human world. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Nickelodeon Movies and award-winning Point Grey Productions’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver are producing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. The film marks Nickelodeon’s first-ever CG-animated theatrical production, in partnership with Ramsey Naito and Jason McConnell, who are overseeing production for Nickelodeon. For Point Grey, Lukas Williams is co-producing and Josh Fagen is overseeing as an Executive Producer. Paramount Pictures will handle worldwide distribution of the film, which is slated to hit theaters August 2, 2023. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is directed by Jeff Rowe (The Mitchells vs. the Machines, “Gravity Falls”, “Disenchantment”).

Considered one of the most popular kids’ franchises, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a classic, global property created in 1984 by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. It first debuted as a successful comic book series and then became a hit animated TV show, a live-action television series and later spawned numerous blockbuster theatrical releases. The property is a global consumer products powerhouse, winning in every category that has hit shelves to date—with toys, apparel, video games, DVDs and more—and generating billions of dollars at retail.

Nickelodeon brought the franchise to life again in 2012 with the CG-animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and then reimagined the Heroes in a Half-Shell with the 2D-animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2019.

Ahead of the theatrical release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Nickelodeon has acquired global rights to the storied Fred Wolf series, which follows the adventures of the heroes in a half-shell — Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo.

Under the deal, all 193 episodes of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — which ran from 1987-1996 — are slated to debut digitally on Nickelodeon later this month in the U.S., followed by Nickelodeon-branded channels and digital platforms internationally.

The acquisition was announced Thursday (July 20) at San Diego Comic-Con during Paramount Pictures’ Hall H presentation for Mutant Mayhem. The iconic franchise’s latest installment hits theaters on Aug. 2. Mutant Mayhem director Jeff Rowe and franchise co-creator Kevin Eastman were on hand to preview the new movie, repping for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle crew at the slimmed-down Comic-Con in the wake of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which prevented writers and actors from attending the convention.

Eastman — who made a surprise appearance on the panel — announced the news to the Hall H crowd.

The comic book legend (who was celebrating his 38th convention appearance) also shared his praise for Rowe’s take on the turtles in the new movie. “I’m so proud of what you guys have done. This movie is brilliant,” Eastman said, recounting the first time he saw footage of the movie. “15 minutes in and I go, ‘When are you starting the sequel?'”

Produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey Productions’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, Mutant Mayhem marks Nickelodeon Animation’s first-ever CG-animated theatrical production. The film follows the Turtle brothers — Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu), Donatello (Micah Abbey), Raphael (Brady Noon) and Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.) — who, after years of being sheltered from the human world, set out to “win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts.” With the help of their new friend April O’Neil (Ayo Edebiri), the Turtles take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Mutant Mayhem also features a star-studded supporting cast, including Rogen, Hannibal Buress, Rose Byrne, John Cena, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Natasia Demetriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Post Malone, Paul Rudd and Maya Rudolph.

Created in 1984 by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles debuted as a comic book series and then became a global mega-hit with the animated 1987 Fred Wolf series. A live-action TV series Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation followed, as well as numerous film adaptations, including 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, its two sequels and the 2007 CGI movie TMNT. Nickelodeon brought new life to the franchise in 2012 with the CG-animated series followed by the 2D-animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in 2018, while Paramount rebooted the project on the big screen in 2014 with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its 2016 sequel Out of the Shadows.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Point Grey, in partnership with Ramsey Naito and Jason McConnell, who are overseeing production for Nickelodeon. For Point Grey, Lukas Williams is co-producing and Josh Fagen is overseeing as an executive producer.

Over 20 Minutes of Fresh 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem' Footage Debuts at SDCC

Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies revealed over 20 minutes of new footage from upcoming animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 20!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

The footage kicked off with a clip which debuted last week in which the Turtles suit up before preparing to stealthily go grocery shopping (available to watch here!)

From there, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael enter a bodega and try to dodge security cameras while shoplifting supplies and food. Job done, the Turtles hitch a ride back to Manhattan on a truck roof. A news report displayed on an enormous screen reveals crime is rising under a mastermind known as Superfly.

The Turtles watch an outdoor screening of 1980s coming of age classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which is live-action while the audience is animated. “Maybe one day everyone will love us like they love Ferris Bueller,” one Turtle laments. The quartet wistfully stare at the movie screen and audience before they escape into the sewers.

The Turtles try to sneak home but a wide-awake Splinter catches them. Of course, Leo owns up to their late night shenanigans. You can see a short clip of this scene in the video below:

Splinter, being Splinter, admonishes the Turtles for risking interaction with humans. Splinter recounts his origin to teach them a valuable lesson about humans. He says humans are the worst - his best friend was a cockroach who was stepped on. We then see Splinter eat his cockroach friend. What’s a rat going to do?

Splinter discovers four adorable baby turtles in the sewer in the green ooze fans know all too well. They transform. Splinter’s transformation is like body horror. Splinter raises the toddler turtles via an adorable montage. We see bath time, all the Turtles sleeping in Splinter’s bed, and their curiosity about the outside world even as kids. Enamoured, Splinter grants the Turtles a trip to the human world.

In Times Square, Splinter is carrying the kids when a woman bumps into him. Soon the whole crowd freaks out and chase Splinter and the Turtles off. They’re almost run over by vehicles as they make their escape. After the incident, Splinter swears to protect the Turtles, training them during a typical martial arts movie montage.

We shift back to the present, when Splinter grounds the Turtles for a month. They’re unhappy, as you’d expect. Donnie asks Leo if it was worth it, which saddens him. We see the Turtles lying in their bads wondering what they’d do if they were normal. They could go to the prom, they suggest, before discounting the possibility.

Now we’re out in NYC at dusk. A human “road crew” working for Superfly pulls a heist on an armored truck and steals what was inside. Police chase after the road crew’s truck. Suddenly, a winged creature seizes the truck and flies off with it to a hidden location. Turns out the creature is Superfly, who we presume eats the crew. We see what was stolen: a mysterious radioactive device.

We cut to Maya Rudolph’s character who, at a headquarters, dishes out tracking units to vehicles to try to catch up to Superfly. The Turtles, meanwhile, are on a rooftop. Donnie is holding a watermelon over his head so the brothers can enjoy a spot of target practice. The Turtles hear a crash below, caused by an errant ninja star. The crash involved a scooter belonging to… April! Someone steals the scooter - Leo insists he retrieve it for this beautiful and charming human woman. The turtles leap into action and chase the thief back to a chop shop.

The Turtles, who have never been in a real fight before, draw their weapons. Mikey gets a ninja star in his leg before the human thieves initiate a brawl. The Turtles use whatever they can to fight. “Go, Ninja, Go!” plays at one point. The fight trashes the chop shop.

Eventually, the Turtles emerge victorious and find April’s scooter. When April walks in the Turtles hide in the shadows. April says they’re “sus” for doing so. Slowly, the Turtles enter the light. April thinks they’re human crime fighters in turtle costumes. “Can we explain this over pizza?” one Turtle says. “How do you feel about pepperoni?” April replies. “I didn’t think it would get this far,” Donnie says.

That’s the end of the footage! The panel also saw TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman deliver a special announcement: Nickelodeon and Paramount have secured the rights to run the original series.

The panel ends with another clip from Mutant Mayhem. We see April and the Turtles in a stakeout of a meeting of the mutants. “I’m going to win a daytime Emmy,” April says to herself as she records the meeting on her phone.

Superfly confronts the Turtles. “I can’t believe there are other mutants like us,” Mikey says. Superfly says the same ooze that made the Turtles made Superfly and his crew, and reveals his “dad”, Baxter Stockman, is the one who dumped the ooze in the sewer. Mondo Gecko hugs the Turtles. “I’m a hugger,” he says. They go on about liking each other’s vibe.

Another clip sees the Turtles are very much not down with Superfly’s plan to kill all the humans.

That’s it for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con. The movie comes out in cinemas August 2, 2023.

Paramount Sole Hollywood Studio Stoking Hall H With ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’, Shows Off 20 Minutes Of New Pic – Comic-Con – Watch

The sole motion picture studio to brave an actor-less Comic-Con this year was Paramount, which opted to show off fresh footage from its upcoming Point Grey-produced Nickelodeon animated feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem before fanboys and fangirls in a very packed Hall H. The Melrose lot is one of the dominant streamers as well, splashing outdoor wraparound building ads in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The session kicked off with a hysterical animated piece of the turtles spying on Barbie, Ken and friends.

“What do these people do all day? How can they afford this?” one of the turtles asks. This was followed up by poignant sizzle reel featuring TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman talking about how he sparked to the zany conceit that sparked a global franchise. He’s been approached by fans over the years “who said they had a tough childhood and the turtles helped get them through, or they wore the same Halloween costume for three years in a row.”

The film opens August 2 in theaters.

“I’m 61 years old and still drawing turtles every day,” said Eastman in the footage. Co-writer and producer Seth Rogen mentioned he was 5 years old when he first discovered TMNT and that it’s the reason he “started taking karate” and why his dad “bought him nunchucks.”

At the aorta of the session was a 20-minute clip of the movie; you can watch some of it above.

The turtles initially set out on a quest to “stealthily” shop for groceries for Master Splinter (Jackie Chan). On their way back home, they see breaking news of a heist being conducted by the villain Superfly (Ice Cube) and decide to stop off in Brooklyn to watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. After returning home to an irate father, Splinter tells the story of how he met the turtles in a puddle of glowing ooze.

Master Splinter advises them to avoid contact with the human world. Why? There’s a flashback when the big rat Splinter with his baby turtles in tow are attacked by a Times Square crowd for being different. He then decides to teach the boys self-defense through kung fu movies.

Later on, the turtles are fooling around on a rooftop with ninja stars and accidentally hit April O’Neil’s helmet. As she is distracted by the yelling at the turtles, her scooter is stolen. The turtles rush to get the scooter back and defeat a group of thugs. April catches up to find her scooter safe, and the entire gang defeated. She sees the turtles hiding in a huddle and agrees to hear them out over pizza.

Filmmaker Jeff Rowe also showing up today along with Eastman, who said the original 1987 animated series just had its rights snapped up by Nick and Paramount.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Kicks Off Comic-Con With 20 Minutes of Footage

'Mutants of Mayhem' director Jeff Rowe anchored the panel, which featured no stars due to the actor's strike.

It may have not have had the star power fans nor the studio hope for, but Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem kicked off the movie panels at San Diego Comic-Con in fine style.

Due to the writers and actors strikes, the studio didn’t have Seth Rogen, who is both one of the movie’s producers and actors, nor any other voice stars. But it did bring out director Jeff Rowe and plenty of footage from the movie.

Twenty minutes of footage, to be precise. Rowe showed off a chunk from the beginning of the movie and, judging by the reaction, it went over gangbusters. The hall, while not packed in the usual way due, still had thousands in their seats, and the audience was howling for the film, which opens Aug. 2 in theaters.

Unspooling was an introduction to the four turtle heroes, making a night run for groceries around town, deciding to catch a movie in the park (Ferris Buller’s Day Off, a Paramount movie, naturally), and thinking how great life would be if only they could be liked by humans and have normal lives. What follows is getting grounded by their father, Splinter, a recap of their origin, an intro to the bad guy, and then their meeting with human girl April O’Neil, which leaves a bunch of crooks messed up.

And while Rogen wasn’t in attendance, he did make his presence felt via two videos, one which detailed a quick history of the Turtles phenomenon, and another which, paired with Ice Cube (and said to have been made a month ago, before the SAG-AFTRA strike) talked about the movie in general.

Rowe, meanwhile, talked up how much the Turtles meant to him as a child. “It’s what taught me to be a fan,” he said.

And he said Rogen who pushed for the angle of focusing on the “teenage” aspect of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, something he thought was underserved.

The style and art of the animation is scatchy and a break from the shiny and polished style of many other animated movies, with the filmmakers making the choice to emulate an underground comic vibe.

“We looked at how we used to draw in high school, when you’re so passionate but you don’t know how to draw but you don’t know that you don’t know how to draw yet,” said Rowe. “So you’ll lovingly draw a hand, drawing every finger nail, every wrinkle, but the hand is horribly misshapen. There is no formal art training to encumber your pure expression. And we said, let’s do that.”

The panel wrapped with a surprise appearance by TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman, who announced that Nickelodeon and Paramount have secured the rights to the original TMNT animated series that aired in the late 1980s. He did not give details as to when and on what platform the series would appear.

“It’s been almost 40 years and I’m still drawing Turtles thanks to you guys,” he said, nodding to the power of fandom.

Jamie Lynn Spears Reveals 'Zoey 102' Reunion Movie Was a 'Pinch-Me Moment'; Teases Possible Sequels

Jamie Lynn Spears is headed back to Pacific Coast Academy for the new Zoey 101 movie!

Zoey 102

Paramount+ announced in January that it was reuniting members of the original cast of Zoey 101 for the sequel movie, Zoey 102. The announcement of the follow-up film came more than a year after a mini Zoey 101 reunion was staged on the sketch comedy show, All That, which was followed in October with The Follow Me (Zoey 101) Experience - The Legacy Continues, a live stream event which included a new version of the show's iconic theme song, "Follow Me," which also featured social media influencers popular today. Stepping back into her Zoey 101 character's shoes for the first time since the Nickelodeon series ended in 2008 was a "surreal" moment for Spears, who spoke with Entertainment Tonight about this new chapter in the Zoey 101 universe.

"It's like I have to pinch myself because it's something we've worked on really hard for years to get, being patient to make sure it's right, putting the right things in place. And then it's like a dream come true. It's this thing you've been talking about and working on and trying to bring to life," Spears told ET's Denny Directo. "The first day I walked on set, I was like, 'Oh my gosh, we really did it. We're here, we're doing it,' so it is surreal. It was like a pinch-me moment a lot of times."

"The fans are the only reason we got to do it the first time and they're definitely the only reason we get to do it the second time," the 32-year-old actress added, crediting fan response to their impromptu Zoey 101 reunions during the early months of the pandemic in 2020 that got the wheels turning for Spears. "After that was when we really started saying, 'We need to hurry up and get this done.' So we worked hard and finally brought it to life and it's all because of the fans. And I think we did them justice. I think they're going to be really happy. They were patient and I think it'll be worth the wait."

In Zoey 102, which drops Thursday, July 27 on Paramount+ and takes place over a decade after the events of Zoey 101, Spears' Zoey Brooks reunites with her old PCA classmates as they come back together to attend the wedding of Logan (Matthew Underwood) and Quinn (Erin Sanders). As a result, Zoey has to face her old flame while also trying to come to terms with the past and the dreams that she had for the future.

Among the original cast members returning for Zoey 102 are Christopher Massey as Michael Barret, Abby Wilde as Stacey Dillsen and Jack Salvatore as Mark Del Figgalo. New additions include Thomas Lennon as Zoey’s boss, Kelly Kevyn; Owen Thiele as Zoey’s friend, Archer March; and Dean Geyer as charismatic actor Todd, along with Audrey Whitby as Lyric, Logan’s younger sister, and Zach Zagoria as Jordan B., a reality dating show contestant.

"Zoey... was part of my childhood. We grew up together," Spears said of catching up with the character more than 15 years later. "I was so ingrained in that character, so revisiting her was something I always dreamed of. But I was like, 'Can that really ever happen? In what world, dude?' Who gets to do something like that twice? It's one of those things that I wasn't sure if it could ever happen, but I always dreamed of being able to do it and see where she is."

And when the Paramount+ movie drops, audiences will see Zoey and the crew "all over the place," at least initially.

"She's a fixer and a planner, but she's also in the midst of her own kind of personal identity [crisis], like, 'Am I where I want to be? Am I?'" previewed Spears, who also is an executive producer on the film. "She's looking at Instagram. She's looking at her friends. We all do this in real life [comparing ourselves]. And I wanted it to be really important that Zoey -- when we left off [in Zoey 101], she was always perfect. Like, everything was with a bow on it. And I wanted to see her where our generation is -- the struggle of measuring up and feeling good enough and not having all the answers and being OK with that, but also taking the steps to change that."

Spears shared that her first days on the Zoey 102 set were primarily Zoey-centric scenes, but as production progressed, she and her castmates spent nearly every scene together. "I'm so glad they did it that way because it was like our high school," she fondly recalled. "We grew up together and getting to do this again, we were crying when we wrapped because it felt so fulfilling. But also, just one of those experiences that I don't think you could ever recreate. But we got to do that."

Zoey 102 is without a few key members of the Zoey 101 family, namely Paul Butcher, who played Zoey's younger brother, Dustin Brooks, as well as Victoria Justice and Austin Butler, who starred in later seasons of the Nickelodeon series.

"They're part of the Zoey family and they always will be," Spears assured. "They're all doing so well in their careers and we have nothing but love and support for them. And hopefully, they get to be a part of the continuation of Zoey's story if we get to do this whole new Zoey era. I just think it's a testament to a magical lightning in a bottle of spirits we had. Look what came out of this? I mean, we got Austin Butler, Victoria [Justice]. I just think it's a reminder of where it all started."

And there's a feeling of the Zoey 101 follow-up being full circle for the Sweet Magnolias actress, whose oldest daughter, Maddie, is 15 years old. "She said she got to see the movie. And she actually said, 'Mom, your movie is really good.' She's like, 'I kind of thought maybe it'd be silly, but it's good,'" Spears recollected, adding her youngest daughter, 5-year-old Ivey, is starting to show interest in Zoey 101. "And I was like, 'Wow, that was the biggest compliment you could ever give me.'"

Spears seemed optimistic, or at the very least enthusiastic, about continuing the Zoey franchise past the sequel movie, hinting that Zoey 102 "sets the tone for a new era of Zoey that really connects to our generation."

"I think the fans will love it," she promised. "You need the movie to reintroduce where they are right now and I would love to go on to figure out, where do all of them end up after this?"

Zoey 102 premieres Thursday, July 27 on Paramount+. Try Paramount+ for FREE at ParamountPlus.com.

Jamie Lynn Spears Reveals Her Daughters Make Cameos in 'Zoey 102' Movie

Jamie Lynn Spears is starting a new chapter of Zoey 101 with Paramount+'s sequel movie, Zoey 102, and this time it's a family affair!

Jamie Lynn Spears Reveals Her Daughters Make Cameos in 'Zoey 102' Movie

Spears revealed that her two daughters, 15-year-old Maddie and 5-year-old Ivey, make cameo appearances in the film, which begins streaming July 27.

"Having my two girls be a part of this film and get to make their little debut cameo, if you will, it was so special because they got to do it together," the Sweet Magnolias actor told Entertainment Tonight's Denny Directo. "And also, my daughter's friend got to do it with her who's like another child to me."

"Just seeing those two worlds collide, it was a really proud moment for me as a mom," Spears said. "[Maddie] told me she liked what she saw -- the set and saw the production and what it was. She was like, 'Mom, I can't believe that, like, they're all here because this is the movie that you've created.' And that made me feel really proud as a mom that she recognized that and saw you can do big things. It doesn't matter. And seeing her be a part of it was just, it was really a special moment."

Spears spoke about what it's meant to set that example for her daughters, sharing that "there's been a lot of times where I felt like I've been fighting for my seat at the table."

"And I just believe that I have children who don't have a choice. I have to show them that you can do that and also have to provide for them and be somebody who's doing something they love," she said. "And I feel lucky every time I get an opportunity. But I think it all comes down to the fact that I do want my daughters to create the life they want. So how else can I teach them that by trying to do it myself?"

She revealed she sought out her eldest daughter's opinion when it came to making Zoey 102.

"Certain things I did ask her about. I'm like, 'Who's the people that are cool? Who are the people we want to be a part of this?' And she told me the movie was cool. So, you know, job well done. Probably should've given her an EP credit," Spears quipped.

Since it's been 15 years since Spears stepped into Zoey Brooks' shoes, she reflected on the advice she'd give her younger self that she wished she'd known.

"Oh gosh, just trust your instincts is the right thing. It might take longer to get where you want to get, but you're going to get there in a way that you're proud of," Spears said. "The fact that an orchestra is playing music for a movie that I'm in and I'm an EP on, if you would have told that to 16-year-old me, I would've been like, 'No, I'm not worthy, I'm not good enough, there's no way that I will ever be able to do that,' because that's what I was told. So for me to have that, I cannot tell you how thankful I am."

Bringing Zoey 102 to life, Spears says, has "100 percent" sparked her creativity as she seeks out new projects.

"I am like, 'Give me anything.' I am reading scripts I wouldn't normally read. I just want to see what I'm capable of because I feel like if I can overcome my own personal things, then I feel like creatively I could really push myself more as well," she explained, adding that her role on Sweet Magnolias "really got me feeling like, 'Oh, I can still do this.'"

While Spears is open to continuing the Zoey 101 franchise, she expressed interest in being "part of the process behind the camera," which includes "one day" directing, but acknowledged she has "a lot to learn."

Nickelodeon’s Nick News has won 10 Emmys, a Peabody, a Columbia DuPont, and the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for Journalistic Excellence, the first and only time it was given to a children’s program.  The show originally aired for 25 years, ending with the retirement of creator and original host Linda Ellerbee in 2016. Created with a core ethos of respecting its kid audience, the show explained world events in a direct way, and always ensured kids were given a platform to voice their opinions and a safe place to question the world. Nick News made its return in 2020 with a special hour-long presentation Kids, Race and Unity: A Nick News Special, hosted by global superstar Alicia Keys. Nick News is executive produced by Magalie Laguerre-Wilkinson, Vice President of News Programming, Nickelodeon and Executive Producer of Nick News.
