Nickelodeon Establishes Avatar Studios, Brand-New Content Division Devoted to Expanding the Avatarverse

NICKELODEON ESTABLISHES AVATAR STUDIOS, BRAND-NEW CONTENT DIVISION DEVOTED TO EXPANDING THE WORLD OF AVATAR: LAST AIRBENDER
AND THE LEGEND OF KORRA

Original Series’ Creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko Join Nickelodeon
as Co-Chief Creative Officers of Avatar Studios

First Project Under New Studio Banner is an Original Animated Theatrical Film
to Begin Production This Year

BURBANK, Calif.—Feb. 24, 2021—Nickelodeon today announced the launch of Avatar Studios, a newly formed division designed to create original content spanning animated series and movies based on the beloved world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Original creators and executive producers Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will helm the studio as co-chief creative officers, reporting to Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. The Studio’s output will bow on platforms including Paramount+, ViacomCBS’ subscription video on-demand service; on Nickelodeon’s own linear and digital platforms; as well as on third-party platforms and in theaters.

The first project from Avatar Studios is slated as an animated theatrical film set to begin production this year. Additional details will be available soon.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and Korra have grown at least ten-fold in popularity since their original hit runs on Nickelodeon, and Ramsey Naito and I are incredibly excited to have Mike and Bryan’s genius talent on board to helm a studio devoted to expanding their characters and world into new content and formats for fans everywhere,” said Brian Robbins, President, ViacomCBS Kids & Family. “Creator-driven stories and characters have long been the hallmarks of Nickelodeon, and Avatar Studios is a way to give Mike and Bryan the resources and runway to open up their imaginations even more and dive deeper into the action and mythology of Avatar as we simultaneously expand upon that world and the world of content available on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.”

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender. But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do. And with this new Avatar Studios venture we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums. We are exceedingly grateful to Brian Robbins and Ramsey Naito for their enthusiasm and respect for the Avatar property and us as its stewards. From the start, they’ve supported our ambitious plans and created a positive, proactive environment for us. We’re excited to be back at Nickelodeon where Avatar began, doing what we do best in the biggest way possible. We can’t wait to build the great teams and productions to make all of this fantasy a reality,” said Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino.

Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender aired for three seasons originally on Nickelodeon, where it began in February 2005 and concluded in July 2008. The series has received the Peabody Award, a Primetime Emmy, Annie Awards and Genesis Awards. The series follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

Avatar: The Last Airbender emerged from its initial three seasons (61 episodes) as one of the most beloved animated properties in history. In addition to the series’ success, the property also has been translated into a successful comic book and graphic novel series, which continue to roll out new original stories. The “Avatar: The Last Airbender” graphic novel spent 70 cumulative weeks on the New York Times Graphic Novel Bestseller list, hitting number one. The DVD and Blu-rays are also incredibly successful, with the “Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Series” generating nearly $5MM in retail sales since its 2018 release.

The Legend of Korra launched in April 2012 on Nickelodeon and ran for four seasons (52 episodes). Its first season premiered as basic cable's number one kid's show and drew 3.8 million viewers per episode, the highest for an animated series that year. Created and executive produced by DiMartino and Konietzko, the series is translated in more than 25 languages for Nickelodeon branded channels internationally.

The property has translated into a successful ongoing graphic novel series written by TV series co-creator DiMartino. The first graphic novel storyline, Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, has captured various Top 10 sales spots across children's fiction, YA science fiction, and graphic novel categories since its debut in 2017. The epic story of The Legend of Korra, set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender 70 years later, follows the journey of Avatar Korra, a 17-year-old girl striving to live up to the legacy of her predecessor Avatar Aang, while using her mastery of all four elements to confront political and spiritual unrest in a modernizing world.

It is the second live action Avatar project based on the franchise to date, following 2010's The Last Airbender.

"Avatar – Nickelodeon’s new animation studio division dedicated entirely to creating content based on the wildly popular world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Led by the series’ original creators Mike DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, in partnership with the Nickelodeon Animation Studio, Avatar Studios will produce for Paramount+ a wide-range of Avatar-inspired content, ranging from spinoffs and theatricals to short form," said ViacomCBS in a separate news release.

- Content licensing revenue decreased 3% year-over-year, reflecting a lower volume of licensing due to COVID-related production delays.

SPOTLIGHT ON STREAMING

In Q4, ViacomCBS delivered robust global streaming & digital video revenue and user growth across its premium, pay and free services.

-- Domestic streaming subscribers reached 19.2M, up 71% year-over-year.
--- CBS All Access and SHOWTIME OTT delivered their best quarter ever in sign-ups.
---- CBS All Access’ momentum was driven by demand for sports content, including the NFL, UEFA and SEC, as well as original programming, including Star Trek: Discovery and The Stand, and content from ViacomCBS cable brands.
---- SHOWTIME OTT benefitted from strong demand for original programming, including the premieres of Shameless and the limited series Your Honor, as well as theatricals.

Streaming metrics are as of December 31, 2020.

REPORTING SEGMENTS

TV ENTERTAINMENT

- In Q4, CBS was the most-watched network in Daytime and Late Night and claimed the quarter’s top drama, news magazine and 4 of the top 5 comedies, as well as the top new comedy series.

- Q4 2020 revenue benefitted from strong affiliate revenue growth, which was offset by lower content licensing revenue.
-- Affiliate revenue increased 23% year-over-year, driven by growth in reverse compensation and retransmission fees, as well as robust streaming subscription revenue from CBS All Access.
-- Advertising revenue declined 1% year-over-year, reflecting the impacts from the delayed start of the fall broadcast season and the sale of CNET Media Group, which was offset by record growth in political advertising.
-- Content licensing revenue decreased 20% year-over-year due to a lower volume of licensing from COVID-related production delays.
- Adjusted OIBDA decreased 12% year-over-year mainly because of increased expenses to support the growth and expansion of CBS All Access.

CABLE NETWORKS

- In Q4, ViacomCBS owned the most top 30 cable networks among viewers 18-49 and 9 of the top 10 original series with kids 2-11; Showtime also had 2 of the top 4 scripted shows on premium cable in the quarter.

- Q4 2020 revenue increased 11% year-over-year, driven by growth in content licensing, affiliate and advertising revenue.
-- Affiliate revenue increased 8% year-over-year, fueled by growth in streaming subscription revenue, including from SHOWTIME OTT, as well as expanded distribution and contractual rate increases, partially offset by linear subscriber declines.
-- Advertising revenue rose 8% year-over-year, reflecting growth in streaming advertising revenue from Pluto TV as well as higher pricing, which more than offset lower linear impressions.
-- Content licensing revenue increased 48% year-over-year, driven by growth from the licensing of library programming.

- Adjusted OIBDA grew 1% year-over-year as a result of the increase in revenue and savings from restructuring activities, which was mostly offset by increased expenses for programming, participations, advertising and promotions, including to support the growth of the company’s streaming services.

FILMED ENTERTAINMENT

- Q4 2020 revenue decreased 3% year-over-year, reflecting the decline in theatrical revenue, partially offset by growth in licensing and home entertainment revenue.
-- Theatrical revenue was immaterial in the quarter as a result of the closure or reduction in capacity of movie theaters in response to COVID-19.
-- Home entertainment revenue increased 14% year-over-year, driven by higher sales of catalog and Miramax titles.
-- Licensing revenue grew 39% year-over-year due to higher licensing of catalog titles.

- Adjusted OIBDA was $18M compared to a loss of $119M in the prior year quarter as lower revenue was more than offset by lower distribution costs from fewer theatrical releases.

BALANCE SHEET & LIQUIDITY

- For the full year, ViacomCBS generated $2.2B of operating cash flow from continuing operations and $1.9B of free cash flow†, benefiting from the timing of production spending and cost savings.
-- In Q4, as expected, the ramp up in production spend led to negative operating cash flow from continuing operations of $339 million and negative free cash flow† of $453 million.

- As of December 31, 2020, the company had $3B of cash on its balance sheet and a committed $3.5B revolving credit facility that remains undrawn.

Mattel and Nickelodeon to Produce New 'Monster High' Animated Series, Live-Action TV Movie Musical

MATTEL TELEVISION AND NICKELODEON ANNOUNCE PLANS
TO PRODUCE AN ANIMATED SERIES
AND LIVE-ACTION TELEVISION MOVIE MUSICAL BASED
ON ICONIC MONSTER HIGH FRANCHISE

Share it: @Nickelodeon @NickAnimation @Mattel @MonsterHigh #Nickelodeon #MonsterHigh

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. and BURBANK, Calif.—Feb. 23, 2021—Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) and Nickelodeon today announced plans to produce a new animated series and live-action television movie musical based on Monster High, the iconic franchise about the children of famous monsters and creatures.

The new series follows fan-favorite characters Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, and Frankie Stein as they navigate the hilarity of high school in the hallowed halls of Monster High. The show, which will be available globally across Nickelodeon platforms, is scheduled to premiere in 2022. Similarly, the movie musical event, which marks the first time Monster High will be brought to life in live action, will be available on Nickelodeon platforms globally next year.

Monster High’s strong message of inclusivity is more relevant than ever,” said Fred Soulie, General Manager, Mattel Television. “Nickelodeon shares our passion for the brand and its purpose having worked on the franchise when it first launched more than a decade ago. They are the ideal partners to bring these beloved characters and their stories to life through episodic television and the live-action television movie.”

“These classic monsters have always captured kids’ imaginations and we are so excited and proud to welcome Monster High to our brand for a new generation of kids,” said Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation. “We have terrific partners on board at Mattel to create original content in different formats, and, with the expertise of the Nick creative team helmed by Claudia Spinelli on the animation development side, and Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan on the live-action side, we can’t wait to showcase the comedy and adventure of these characters as they defy expectations and take on the world.”

“We could not be more excited to work with Ramsey, Claudia, Zack, Shauna, our writers and the entire Nickelodeon animation and live-action teams to introduce Monster High to a new audience,” added Adam Bonnet, Executive Producer, Mattel Television. “This property has always resonated deeply with fans and our reimagination of the franchise will focus on addressing important themes of identity and empowerment for kids today.”

The Monster High series and movie musical event join other Mattel Television content in production, including series and specials based on Barbie, Masters of the Universe, Thomas & Friends, Polly Pocket and Fireman Sam, to name a few.

The forthcoming Monster High series and movie underscore a key element of Nickelodeon’s content strategy, to build and expand the worlds of enormously popular franchises such as Star Trek, SpongeBob SquarePants, Henry Danger, Big Nate and Real Pigeons Fight Crime among others, to give audiences more of what they love.  Nickelodeon’s new content slate is informed by the network’s ongoing research and insights into today's generation of kids, who are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

Production on the Monster High animated TV series is overseen for Nickelodeon by Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President, Animation Development. Shea Fontana (Polly Pocket, DC Super Hero Girls) is serving as the showrunner. Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series, Rugrats) and the writing team of Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (Princess and the Frog, Playmobil: The Movie) have been tapped to write the Monster High live-action television movie. Production on the Monster High movie for Nickelodeon is overseen by Zack Olin, Senior Vice President, Live-Action and Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Adam Bonnett, Executive Producer and Christopher Keenan, Senior Vice President of Content Development are overseeing the animated series for Mattel, and Bonnett is also overseeing the live-action movie for Mattel.

Monster High was first introduced in 2010 with a global fanbase embracing its message of inclusivity. Beginning in 2022, Mattel will be refueling the franchise and introducing Monster High to a whole new generation of kids.

Mattel launched Monster High in 2010 as a counter to the mainstream doll lines on the market at the time. Created by designer Garrett Sander, the brand quickly gained traction with kids and collectors alike that connected with Monster High’s overarching message of inclusivity and that “everyone is welcome.” Mattel’s hit toy line grew into a franchise that extended into animated specials and feature films, games, and a global licensing program. The brand received its first reboot/refresh in 2016 with redesigned dolls and softer features accompanied by an animated film, Welcome to Monster High. After an eight-year run and some shrinking shelf space at retail, Mattel quietly retired the line in 2018.

Last year, the seeds were planted for a relaunch with the debut of Mattel Creation’s Monster High Skullector Dolls. The collector line led by product designer Rebecca Shipman debuted with premium dolls inspired by Pennywise from It and the Grady Twins from The Shining. The dolls sold out almost instantly

ANIMATION LUMINARY FRED SEIBERT LAUNCHES NEW PRODUCTION COMPANY

Visionary Producer of Such Blockbuster Animation Hits as Adventure Time, The Fairly OddParents, Castlevania, Bravest Warriors and Bee & Puppycat to Develop Range of Long and Short Form Animation Series to Meet Heightened Demand for Animation from Linear TV and Streaming Platforms

Initial Projects Include First Look Deal with VIS KIDS, a Division of ViacomCBS Networks International; Seibert to Also Remain Executive Producer on Netflix hit Castlevania, and the Highly-Anticipated Return of Bee & PuppyCat Coming Soon to Netflix

New York, NY (February 23, 2021) – Fred Seibert, the driving force behind some of the most successful and iconic animation projects of our time, announced today he is launching a brand new production entity – FredFilms.  The new company is designed to help meet the increased demand for premium adult and kid animation programming from traditional linear networks and a wide range of streaming platforms.  For this new venture, Seibert has already struck a first look deal with VIS KIDS, a division of ViacomCBS Networks International, with additional projects expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Seibert’s credits and achievements have established him as a true legend in animation and a visionary in television branding. During his illustrious career, Seibert has discovered, cultivated and launched some the biggest and freshest animated series across TV and streaming networks.  He has served as executive producer for such blockbusters as Pendelton Ward’s Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors (Cartoon Network and Cartoon Hangover), Butch Hartman’s The Fairly Oddparents (Nickelodeon), Kevin Kolde’s and Warren Ellis’ Castlevania (Netflix), and Natasha Allegri’s Bee & Puppycat (the most backed animated series in Kickstarter history). While serving as President of Hanna-Barbera, Seibert oversaw the development of a string of hits from The Powerpuff Girls to Dexter’s Laboratory.  He has also helped discover some of the hottest animated talent on the planet including Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, Pendelton Ward and Seth MacFarlane.

In addition to his success in animation, Seibert has overseen some of the most celebrated television branding achievements of all-time.  As the founding creative director of MTV, he  developed the unforgettable “I Want My MTV” campaign. Additionally, he architected the original Nickelodeon and Nick-at-Nite branding and promotion.

Out of the gate FredFilms has finalized a first look deal with VIS KIDS, a division of ViacomCBS Networks International.  Through the agreement, FredFilms will present at least three projects to the studio with a goal of at least one being put into development.  Seibert will also continue to serve in an executive producing role on two major Netflix projects – the breakout hit Castlevania which will launch its fourth season later this year, and the cult sensation Bee & Puppycat whose new iteration Bee & Puppycat: Lost in Space is coming soon to Netflix.

“Animation is having yet another golden age, driven, as always, by new technologies. The rise of streaming platforms has given animation studios a whole new landscape to have their innovative voices and stories told. And the success that many projects are finding in streaming, both adult and kid targeted series, has re-opened the eyes of executives at linear networks to invest in animation.  With that said, I thought now was the perfect time to set up a new production company in which I can focus 100% of my energies on what I truly love to do: nurture fresh talent and emerging voices, and help bring to life amazing, cutting-edge animation,” said Seibert.

“At VIS KIDS, we are committed to the development of new creative partnerships and deepening our relationships with talent to bring unique, fun and creative stories to life. We look forward to our partnership with Fred Seibert and FREDFILMS, as we further this commitment and establish VIS KIDS as an industry leader in kids content,” said Nina Hahn, Head of VIS KIDS and Senior Vice President, Production & Development, Nickelodeon International.

Seibert is currently building out his executive team and has already brought on former Crunchyroll writer/producer and seasoned graphic novel editor Casey Gonzalez as his development director and Sarah Kessler as Manager, Development.

He is interested in hearing pitches from creators.  More information about FredFilms can be found at fredfilms.com.
