It’s nearly apocalyptic, the way Nickelodeon star and entrepreneur Jace Norman talks about the transitioning media industry. Lounged on a loveseat in the green room of the Flaunt studio, he says the future of entertainment is in social media, which he believes might be as damaging for creators as it could be for consumers, especially children.

“There are so many false narratives being portrayed, like, ‘This is what life is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be perfect and you’re supposed to have fun all the time,’” he tells me. “And I think, when you’re a kid, and you’re seeing all this, and you’re constantly getting that information like…” he gapes, wide-eyed at an invisible phone in his palm he pretends to scroll through. “I bet it has some effect.”

When I remind Norman that this is the exact sort of attitude people had about television and the radio, he says, “It could be that.” He thinks about it for a moment. “I could be just a cranky old man already,” he adds with a laugh.

Not by any definition, I know. Norman, star of the hit show Henry Danger, co-founder of the company Creator Edge, and budding television producer, is only eighteen years old. He first hit the small screen as part-time superhero sidekick Henry Hart/Kid Danger in 2014, and with four Kids’ Choice Award nominations and one win under its superhero belt, Henry Danger is now on its fifth season.

Before reaching the heights of child-stardom, Norman lived in a rural area in New Mexico, and grew up exploring the outdoors with his brother. His heroes included Albert Einstein and Harrison Ford, the former because the star-to-be related to Einstein’s sense of curiosity as well as his dyslexia; the latter because Norman loves Indiana Jones.

He recalls, “I saw Indiana Jones when I was a little kid, and I was just like, ‘How did they make that? How did they do that? What was the process of actually doing that?’ Because for me, it felt like magic.”

Jump cut to Norman’s family moving to San Diego, from where within a few years, his parents would begin driving to Los Angeles for upwards of two hours to get their son to auditions after school. And after landing a few Disney and Nickelodeon side-roles, Norman was approached by Nickelodeon and thereafter became Kid Danger, donning a red and silver domino mask and ZAP! POW! WHAM!-ing off to solve silly crimes with the superhero Captain Man.

Norman’s position as a comedic child star beloved by children is reminiscent of Cole and Dylan Sprouse’s position during their time on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, or Drake Bell and Josh Peck’s during the height of their eponymous series. The “kid sitcom,” as Norman refers to it, has served as a launching pad for many careers. But he believes that his kind may be endangered. “I would say that Henry Danger is of the last kid sitcoms,” he says, explaining that children are now often fans of more dramatic, single-camera shows like The Flash and Stranger Things, increasingly viewed on streaming services.

Though, that’s just scripted content. Social media is another story. “The whole time I’ve been on Henry Danger I’ve had, like, anxiety about how kids are going to stop watching TV,” he says. “So I thought, ‘I have to do something,’ and I decided to make a company that was in the social media field.”

That would be Creator Edge, a social media branding company that connects influencers and organizations wanting to sell their product. “It’s so easy to scroll past something that you’re not interested in. Most people aren’t interested in ads like this,”—he holds out an invisible product, like a socialite in a selfie brandishing multivitamins you’re not positive they take.

Norman saw that the most successful brands advertising on Instagram created partnerships with their influencers, and showcased their products as something that is a part of the social media stars’ personal aesthetic. That’s what makes followers pay attention. That’s what Creator Edge does.

But what happened to cranky-old-man Norman and his growing disdain for the next phase of media consumption?

“That’s the tough thing,” Norman says. “Social media is the future, but at the same time, it’s super messed up right now. Do I join it, or do I completely rebel against it? There’s been many times where I don’t want to use social media and want to just focus on acting. It’s this constant conflict for me.”

In any case, acting is currently not Norman’s only focus, now that he’s testing out the waters of producing as well. While still working on Henry Danger, he has created two television programs that are now in development, and are, of course, more dramatic, single-camera shows.

The first project, Gaps, taps writers from recent comedy smash Blockers, and is a parody of Norman’s life, following an actor on a kid’s show behind the scenes. Norman would be a star as well as a producer for this project, and as of this interview, he has already shot the pilot and is ready for pitching.

The second show, Get Some, for which Norman would focus on showrunning rather than acting, is about the provocative and messy experiences of social media stars in Los Angeles. The material clearly comes from a personal place, and Norman returns to his criticisms of the social media machine. “It’s all predicated on people selling themselves… It’s very psychologically hard on people to sell themselves on Instagram. You get caught up in this, and it really can destroy you from the inside out.”

This is Jace Norman’s dilemma. He is a creator, he is an actor, he is an entrepreneur, and his insider’s knowledge tells him that the future of media is something of a dark one. So, what is he going to do? What should all of us do, as suckers for Instagram shots of beautiful people doing beautiful things?

From his experience as a child star occasionally overwhelmed with the pressures of his job and people managing his image, Norman gives this: shut everything out and ask what matters.

“To me, what really matters is creating and basically being, I guess,” Norman says. “Basically being your authentic, kind self.”

So, Norman’s authentic, kind self will continue working, on Henry Danger, on his new shows, on Creator Edge, and on a new idea for a subscription box that would deliver stylish pairs of socks to their customer’s door. We might even expect to see Norman promoted to full blown superhero soon, with the way things are going.

Nickelodeon India Promotes a Noise-Free Diwali with New Pro-Social Initiative

MUMBAI: Nickelodeon, India’s leading kids’ entertainment franchise from Viacom18, is churning a new wave of change this Diwali by encouraging kids and adults to have a noise-free Diwali. With this initiative, this year Nickelodeon hopes to spread awareness about importance of noise-free Diwali and also reaches out to some of the most severely affected groups by the noise pollution caused during the festival.

One such group being affected the most owing to the noise of firecrackers is Mumbai Traffic Police. Whilst revellers know the harmful effects of bursting crackers on their environment, seldom do they think about the consequences of their acts on traffic police-men who are on-duty during the festival. They not only affected by the air but also are affected by noise pollution generated by the fire crackers in the midst of an already high decibel noise of traffic. This Diwali, Nicktoon Shiva as a gesture of respect and gratitude to the department, gave away several sweet boxes to these traffic policemen.

Also affected are our little pooches who are highly sensitive to noise and face the brunt of noisy fire crackers! Several such munchkins, who we call family, get lost every year trying to escape from the loud noises of firecrackers and lose a home! To create awareness about the severe effects of noise pollution, Nickelodeon has sent out Earmuffs for pets to not just protect them from the noise pollution, but to stir a conversation and create awareness on the issue.

Viacom Américas Launches Nickelodeon's NOGGIN on TV Alphaville and X-Play in Brazil

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) – Américas has announced the exciting news that they have close agreements to launch NOGGIN on TV Alphaville and X-Play in Brazil! NOGGIN launched on the telecommunications platforms in mid-October 2018, and offers customers access to Nickelodeon's top-ranked video subscription service for preschoolers at no extra charge.

The launch of NOGGIN on the platforms is part of Viacom's international expansion for the top-rated SVoD service, following its launch on Oi, Watch and Net.com in August 2018. With a focus on educational content, NOGGIN brings viewers full-length library episodes of Nickelodeon’s hit preschool series such as As Pistas de Blue (Blue's Clues), Blue's Room, Dora, A Aventureira, Fifi and the Flowertots, Go, Diego, Go!, Max & Ruby, Moose and Zee, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, Olive the Ostrich, Peter Rabbit, and Robô e Monstro, Super Fofos! (The Wonder Pets!), as well as the recently added episodes of Mutt & Stuff, Team Umizoomi, Rusty Rivets and Rugrats.

NOGGIN is now available in all Latin American countries, following Nickelodeon launching the service - based on the US version - in Latin America in 2015. The service has seen significant growth in the last year, with the number of viewers using the service quadrupling.

Nickelodeon Names Ramsey Naito as EVP, Animation Production and Development

Oscar-nominated producer to take charge of the network’s animation content across all formats and platforms spanning digital, TV and film.

BURBANK, CA -- Nickelodeon has appointed Oscar-nominated producer Ramsey Naito to the role of Executive Vice President (EVP) of Animation Production and Development, in charge of the network’s animation content across all formats and platforms spanning digital, TV and film. Reporting to newly appointed Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins, Naito will be based in Nickelodeon’s Burbank, CA studio.

“Ramsey is a proven hit-maker and creative leader who has helped bring to life some incredibly imaginative characters for audiences of all ages,” Robbins said in making the announcement. “One of our goals is to exponentially grow our animation business and output on every platform, and I have no doubt that Ramsey will help us get there through a new generation of innovative, creator-driven content.”

In her new role, Naito also will manage the day-to-day operations of Nickelodeon’s animation group, where she will identify new talent and projects to further enrich Nick’s content pipeline. Additionally, she will oversee the network’s key animated franchises, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Loud House.

Naito most recently oversaw production on Paramount Pictures’ upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants movie, "It’s a Wonderful Sponge", slated for 2020. She produced DreamWorks Animation’s Oscar-nominated feature, The Boss Baby, while also earning her a PGA nomination for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures. Prior to DreamWorks Animation, Ramsey worked as a producer for Blue Sky Studios (the studio which produced Nickelodeon's iconic Nicktoons ident in the '90s), at Cartoon Network as Head of Movies, and at Nickelodeon Movies as Vice President of Development & Production.

Her executive and producer credits include: Barnyard (2006), The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002), Hey Arnold! The Movie (2002), the Oscar-nominated Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (2001), Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (2000), and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999).

Naito is a member of Women in Animation and the Producers Guild of America. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute College of Art and her Master of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts.

Chris Viscardi, who formerly was Senior Vice President (SVP) of Animation and Development at Nick, will now move into a producer role for the network, overseeing the creation of feature-length animated content for both Nickelodeon and third-party digital and linear platforms.

The appointment of Naito follows Robbins’ recent hire of longtime close associate Shauna Phelan to the newly created position as SVP, Live-Action Scripted Content, for the Nickelodeon Group.

Nickelodeon France to Premiere 'Knight Squad' on Saturday 10th November 2018

Nickelodeon France will premiere Knight Squad, Nickelodeon's newest live action comedy series, on Saturday 10th November 2018 at 10:55! Set at a magical school for knights in training, where two mismatched students form an unlikely alliance to protect each other’s secret and pursue their dreams, new episodes of Knight Squad, locally titled L'École des chevaliers will continue to air regularly on Nickelodeon France.

Marianne expands her leadership remit to include the UK and Ireland, Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe and Russia (UKNEE) cluster

Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) has promoted Marianne James to an expanded role that will see her leading the consumer products business across Viacom’s UK & Ireland, Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe and Russia (UKNEE) cluster.

Marianne previously led Consumer Products and Commercial Partnerships for the UK, and will continue her commercial partnerships role for Nickelodeon UK in addition to her new cluster responsibilities.

The new role is effective immediately with James reporting in to Alison Bakunowich, Senior Vice President (SVP), Nickelodeon, UK, Northern and Eastern Europe, and Mark Kingston, SVP, International, VNCP.

“Marianne has done an incredible job growing the UK consumer products business over the past five years,” said Mark. “As we focus on expanding consumer products in strategic European markets, including Russia and Poland, Marianne will bring her experience, strategic thinking and creativity to these businesses.”

Marianne will continue to oversee UK commercial opportunities for events like Slimefest

In her newly expanded role, Marianne will oversee retail sales and product category teams, retail marketing and commercial growth strategies for consumer products across the UKNEE cluster. UKNEE is a strategic growth area for Viacom’s consumer products business. Additionally, in her UK Commercial Partnerships role, Marianne will steer brand and commercial partnerships and sponsorships for Nickelodeon UK, including the successful PAW Patrol Live tour and Slimefest.

Marianne joined Viacom in 2011 as director of retail sales and marketing for Europe and Pan-European licensing.

Jeannine Lafebre, Senior Director, VNCP Benelux, Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe and Petia Toncheva, Licensing Director, Russia and CIS, will continue to directly lead their respective markets with a reporting line into James.

The Heroes in a Half Shell Return in 'Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

Nickelodeon's Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reimagines the iconic IP and returns to its comic book roots.

When the iconic characters of beloved series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stormed out of the sewers and back to TV in 2012, the CGI-animated series was a hit. So after five successful seasons and multiple Emmy nominations, Nickelodeon wasted no time developing the brand’s next iteration, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now in 2D animation, 26 episodes were announced at Nick’s 2017 upfront months before the final episodes of the previous series had even aired.

“It was a very fast development process, but we came in with a clear vision that helped us expedite the production,” the show’s executive producer Ant Ward, who signed on after serving as a supervising producer on the last TMNT series, told Kidscreen.

As further testament to the power of the brand, Nick ordered a second 26-episode season in July before Rise of the TMNT premiered on September 17 in the US and began rolling out globally across Nickelodeon’s channels and branded blocks in 170-plus countries and territories.

With a younger, lighter tone for its 11-minute episodes, the action-comedy finds the turtle brothers in possession of new mystical powers as they set out on crime-fighting adventures in New York City with their human friend April O’Neil (voiced by The Vampire Diaries' Kat Graham).

Joining Ward as Executive Producer is renowned character designer and TMNT newbie Andy Suriano (DuckTales, Mickey Mouse shorts). Suriano says this series presents the turtles as more multi-dimensional characters.

“If you were to describe each of the turtles, traditionally Mikey is the funny one, Donatello is the smart one, Raphael is the angry one, and Leo is the leader. But last time I checked, leadership isn’t a character trait, so we purposely mixed things up and removed the mantle of leadership from Leo so we could explore his character in other ways,” says Suriano.

Despite the pressure of following up the last series so quickly, Ward says the previous series freed up the production to try new things.

“Because the last series did so well in paying homage to many of the other iterations of TMNT, we didn’t feel the need to retell or recall certain things. We could create new storylines, villains and canon,” he says.

Aesthetically, the new show’s 2D look harkens back to the original TMNT comic book series created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, and pulls from French comic books from the ’70s in its use of color.

“We looked into what Kevin [Eastman] was doing back in the day with his heavy, almost Frank Miller-esque use of blacks. We are also big fans of ’70s French and Belgian science-fiction/fantasy comics,” says Suriano. “In the show, you’ll see a lot of heavy blacks and holding lines, but in a brightly colored cityscape so it’s not too edgy or serious.”

We met up with Josh Brener – the voice of Donatello – at New York Comic Con to discuss the popular revival.

If you’re living under a rock, the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series is back on television! Airing all over Nickelodeon, you can now catch your favorite gang of pizza-eating, Cowabonga spitting turtles in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The first episode of the new revival aired on July 20, 2018 and follows the four turtle brothers – Raph, Leo, Donnie and Mikey – as they encounter new allies and villains and discover a magical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City.

You might know funny man Josh Brener from some of his popular projects like Silicon Valley, but now he’s taken on the iconic role of Donatello! We caught up with the busy actor to learn more about the show and what fans can expect from his version of the lovable turtle.

CS: For those you don’t watch, what can they expect for this revival?

Josh: “Yeah, definitely! Our creators and executive producers have really put the focus on fun and making sure this isn’t only about the history of the turtles and where they’ve been, but also a new generation of fans and a new generation of turtles and sort of watching them start out and kind of mess everything up and just be disasters as they’re learning to become the Ninja Turtles which is a lot of fun to watch.”

CS: What drew you to this role? Were you fan?

Josh: “Oh yeah! Like the 8-year-old inside of me was screaming. I remember getting an email that was like “you’re going to go read for The Ninja Turtles” – it was like that’s crazy! Yeah, it’s just super exciting to be a part of something that I was so in love with as a kid and that so many people, it’s just awesome to come to Cons and just seeing how many people like are super into the Turtles!”

CS: The fandom is real when it comes to the Turtles!

Josh: “The fandom is real. So yeah it’s just cool to be a part of something that means that much to that many people.”

CS: Who was your favorite ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’?

Josh: “I actually was a Donatello fan which I remember taking a lot of heat for as a kid, like oh he just has a stick everyone else has swords and Katanas – and Donatello has like a piece of wood. And I remember getting made fun of but now I’m feeling pretty good about it. I stayed strong! I represented.”

CS: What’s the working process like for you and the rest of the cast?

Josh: “Yeah we actually record together pretty much every Monday afternoon! Which is super cool we all get to get in the booth together and riff and ad-lib and sort of play off each other and every now and then schedules make it so you have to record by yourself and that’s always kind of sad. But when we’re all together, it’s just a ton of fun!”

CS: So pizza is a big thing in this series…

Josh: “Correct!”

CS: Do you have a favorite type of pizza?

Josh: “Oh man! I’m human I love it. I enjoy pizza as much as Turtles who also love pizza. Trying to think because I’m in New York so it’s really scary to talk about pizza. I really remember loving Koronet here. I think it’s somewhere up near Columbia or something like that but there’s one of those giant slices of pizza on the Upper West Side and I think it’s called Koronet so if I had a gun to my head off hand just because I’m in New York it’s in my mind.”

CS: For you – what do you think you brought different to the role of Donatello?

Josh: “Donny’s still that like nerdy, tech kind of guy… inventions and so far but he’s not like a poindexter nerd in this version I don’t think. Like it’s not glasses taped up and a pocket protector, he’s very much like a nerd’s nerd, more like someone you would find here at Comic Con. Takes the nerddom seriously, a nerd’s nerd if you know what I mean.”

CS: Any secrets you can tell us about the making of this revival?

Josh: “Okay, what can I tell you? I don’t know if it’s a secret but it’s a thing that I think is super cool which is that we have this awesome cast of villains including John Cena and he’s both the coolest and nicest and scariest person that I’ve ever met. He’s such a.. he’s awesome! And then Lena Headey as you might know as Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones and plays this character Big Momma and John Michael Higgins and Reese Darby so we just have all these kind of awesome cool people. And then the other thing that is kind of exciting I think is that our director is Rob Paulson who is like the original Michelangelo and he’s played Donatello. He’s also Pinky of Pinky and the Brain so we have like really cool awesome people associated with this show which has been a lot of fun.”
