From Broadcasting & Cable:

Reinventing Kids’ Nets for a New Media Generation

Producing more content part of plan to retain ad dollars

WHY THIS MATTERS: Kids networks are trying to hold onto ad dollars by helping marketers reach families on more platforms.

As Another Upfront advertising market approaches, the kids’ cable networks are dealing with the changing TV environment in a big way.

Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Disney Media are creating more content as the programming becomes more competitive, and they’re putting that content on more platforms in search of that new post-millennial generation of young viewers.

On March 6, Nickelodeon will hold its upfront presentation for media buyers at New York’s Palace Theatre, where SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical currently runs. Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon and Viacom Media Networks Kids & Family Group, said the venue is illustrative of how the network and its content are being reinvented.

Nickelodeon is the leader in the kids’ TV category, but traditional ratings are down as kids entertain themselves with video-on-demand, YouTube, games and whatever else they can find on digital devices.

“What we do is we reinvent ourselves every couple of years as kids outgrow Nickelodeon and another generation of kids come in,” Zarghami said. “So reinvention is in our DNA.”

Added Disney/ABC Television president of ad sales Rita Ferro: “The transformation that’s happening in the world of television, this is where you see it all first. And you see it all earlier than everywhere else. And you’re also more limited and restricted in terms of how you address some of that in the space of measurement and data.”

Nickelodeon is producing more programming than ever before and creating digital and social content for kids and their parents. It is also doing more virtual reality, augmented reality, eSports, consumer products and live events like the upcoming Slimefest.

“The good news about us is we’ve proven time and again that with great IP at the center, we can go anywhere,” Zarghami said. “So we feel pretty well prepared and in a great position to be able to adapt to how the landscape is changing.”

Nickelodeon is getting advertisers to follow along from platform to platform using an “all for one” strategy, said Viacom ad sales head Sean Moran. He noted that Nickelodeon’s VOD plays are up 13% and video streams are up 20%.

“When you come on board with Nickelodeon, you’re going to be part of a deal that’s going across every platform, and that’s the way it’s being served up,” Moran said.

But Jason Maltby, executive director of national video investment at media agency Mindshare, said that while the networks’ online efforts help, ad dollars are being shifted from TV because the solution to audience fragmentation isn’t as simple as shifting 22-minute episodes to a full-episode player.

“You know that kids are online,” Maltby said. “You know they’re using multiple screens. They like to play a lot of games. You know that they are consuming vast amounts of user-generated content. But you don’t always have measurement you’re comfortable with and increasingly you’re going to have concerns about brand safety.”

While lower ratings have put upward pressure on pricing, “I don’t think [kids’ TV] is a growth market. If anything it’s probably plateaued or has started to decline,” he said.

Viacom’s Moran, speaking from Toy Fair in New York, said he sees the kids’ market as pretty healthy. Food marketers such as Dannon, Milk Life and Bel Group cheese have healthy eating initiatives and bigger companies such as Kellogg’s and Campbell Soup are recommitting to the kids market, he said.

On top of that, 25% of Nickelodeon advertisers are nonendemic, looking to reach parents watching with their children.

Christine Miller, president and general manager of Turner’s Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang, said Cartoon is seeing audience growth on mobile, VOD and connected devices and is developing programming with those platforms in mind.

“That’s really the world we’re living in and until measurement catches up, we can’t slow down,” Miller said.

For example, Cartoon last year launched its series OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes on a gaming platform. Uni-kitty! is based on a character from The Lego Movie. And Teen Titans Go! will be coming to theaters this summer.

Other new shows coming up, such as Apple and Onion, Craig of the Creek and Summer Camp Island, get sneak peek online views before appearing on the networks.

“It’s the most robust content play that we’ve had in a few year and it’s diverse both in the content we’re creating and the creators,” Miller said. As online sites and streaming services jump into the kids category, more programming than ever is being created.

“I still think that quality storytelling and real world-building and character-building gets rewarded and breaks through and that’s what we’ve seen to date,” she said.

Disney/ABC is holding upfront meetings with advertisers at Walt Disney World this week and will be talking about how to connect with kids and their families not just through Disney Channel and Disney Junior — which are sponsored but commercial-free — and the ad-supported Disney XD, but across the whole Disney portfolio.

After the relaunch of DuckTales, sponsor Aflac’s spokes-duck was featured watching the show during a customized segment on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Toons for Our Times

Animation remains key for Disney, with upcoming series including Big City Greens and Amphibia among the entries on Disney Channel’s slate.

But Disney is also putting material together for the Disney Digital Network and creating shows with Facebook, including Club Mickey Mouse.

“It’s going to be an interesting marketplace,” Ferro said. Marketers are looking to move fast to take advantage of trends that come and go quickly. They’re seeing that licensing products are big movers for them, she said.

Working with a company such as Disney can give marketers broad reach and the ability to tell stories as part of their advertising messages using new technologies and new platforms.

“When you think about video there is no better place than television to be able to tell that story — and when I say television, I’m using the word elastically,” Ferro said. “I’m not talking about the screen, I’m talking about the content.”

Paramount's Live-Action 'Dora the Explorer' Movie Gets a Summer 2019 Release

Vamanos! Dora the Explorer will be making the trek to movie theaters in summer 2019!

Paramount has today announced that the studio's live-action feature, based on the Nickelodeon's beloved Dora the Explorer animated preschool series, will receive a wide release in North America on Friday, August 2, 2019! A UK release should hopefully follow soon after.

In the works since 2015. Dora the Explorer is being developed through the studio’s Paramount Players division, and will center on Dora as a teenager moving to the city and living with her cousin.

James Bobin, who directed The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, and Alice Through the Looking Glass, will be directing the film with a script from Storks and Neighbors director Nick Stoller. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes label and his partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing the flick.

The August 2019 release calendar is currently pretty empty, save for a untitled WB event film and Disney's Artemis Fowl, currently dated for Aug. 9.

There is currently no word of when production for the film will commence.

Dora the Explorer was a series that proved to be a massive hit for Nickelodeon, running from 2000 to 2014 with 172 episodes aired. It centered on an a seven-year-old American Latina who, along with her monkey, Boots, faced riddles and characters like a thieving fox named Swiper as she went on quests. She was notable for speaking in both English and Spanish at a time when that was not common on children's programming in the United States. The show spawned two spin-off series, Go, Diego, Go!, which follows Dpra's 8-year-old cousin Diego as he rescued animals around the world, and Dora and Friends: Into the City!, which follows the iconic character Dora living in a city, attending school and at the center of a new group of friends that works together to give back to the community--having both real-life and magical adventures along the way. The success of Dora spawned a number of toys and dolls, video games, DVDs, and a slew of merchandising, which industry estimates peg at more than $11 billion since 2000, as well as stage adaptations. It’s a generational evergreen.

The original series, which ran for more than 170 episodes between 2000 and 2014, spawned a number of toys, books, video games, and direct-to-DVD movies – so a live-action version is ripe for the taking.

Dora earned praise for its focus on diversity when it aired, and won a Peabody Award in 2003 for its outstanding efforts in making learning a pleasurable experience for pre-school viewers.

Platinum Dunes has a first-look deal with Paramount. Stoller’s writing credits include Get Him to the Greek, Neighbors, the Muppet movie reboots, animated films Storks and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, and Kevin Hart’s Night School.

Paramount has three other movies already set for the 2019 summer — Transformers 7 on June 28, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun remake on July 12, and an untitled Terminator movie on July 28.

Dora the Explorer, the Nick series, was co-created by Eric Weiner, Chris Gifford, and Valerie Walsh.

Nickelodeon Confirms That 'SpongeBob SquarePants' Is NOT Being Canceled | 2018 Edition

Relax, SpongeBob SquarePants is not canceled!

A tweet surfaced over the weekend of Feb. 24 that appeared to come directly from Nickelodeon's official verified SpongeBob Twitter account (@SpongeBob), and its message was concerning to longtime lovers of the beloved animated series. “Unfortunately, our show will be coming to a final end on March 1, 2018,” the tweet read. “It’s been a long ride, and we are very grateful for all the fans worldwide that have shown support throughout the years, none of this would have been possible without you.” The tweet goes the extra mile, including a screen grab of a teary-eyed SpongeBob himself, and was spread like wildfire across social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.

Don’t worry, though — it turns out that Plankton may have been up to his tricks again, as the whole thing was a hoax! This message doesn’t even appear on the official SpongeBob Twitter page!

Nickelodeon confirmed that SpongeBob SquarePants wouldn't be ending on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in a Tweet on the networks official Twitter page, reiterating that SpongeBob SquarePants has been renewed through to at least the show's twelfth season, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2019, and even has its own critically acclaimed Broadway show!

Aside from getting renewed on TV, SpongeBob SquarePants will also be featured in his third movie, which is slated to premiere on July 31, 2020, under Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures!

A new rumor circulates the Internet nearly every year that SpongeBob SquarePants will be ending. In 2016, one hoax claimed that Nickelodeon would be ceasing production on the networks hit original animated series on Monday 17th October 2016. A Nickelodeon representative confirmed, via Snopes.com, that "after 17 years", the show wasn't cancelled.

Example, collected via Facebook during October 2016: "I heard the beloved Nickelodeon TV series "Spongebob Squarepants" is being cancelled on October 17, 2016. Is this true?"

"The claim struck enough of a nostalgic chord amount social media users, many of whom grew up watching the exploits of the seafloor denizens of the Bikini Bottom, that few stopped to consider that it cited no reference," noted Snopes.com. "No articles heralded the end of the Krusty Krab era, nor did any major entertainment outlets cover the cancellation of one of the most prominent children's' shows of the last two decades. Nonetheless, viewers across the country expressed disappointment on [social media]."

“It blows my mind when I do the math and realize that SpongeBob has been living in my head for nearly one-third of my life now,” Tom Kenny, who voices the title character, said in a statement in 2017. “And he’s the best roommate I’ve ever had!” New episodes of SpongeBob’s 11th and 12th season's will continue airing throughout 2018-2019.
