Alpharetta 8-Year-Old Raises More Than $7,000 for CDC Foundation; Inspired by '#KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall' Special

Alpharetta 8-year-old raises more than $7,000 for CDC Foundation

Alani Thorns anticipated the trip of a young lifetime for her eighth birthday — to New York City, a place her mother has visited and told her about many times. When COVID-19 (coronavirus) forced the holiday to be canceled, she planned a sleepover with friends. The virus got that too, so she reverted to Plan C, which was spending her spring break creating artwork to raise funds for the CDC Foundation.

The goal was to raise $800 selling 100 pieces for $8 a pop. But at the end of the week, and thanks to a dollar-for-dollar match from Lysol, she raised $7,350, with support coming from as far away as Chicago and Los Angeles. The money will go toward providing supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE) and research funding to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thorns, a precocious girl, says she hopes the money she raised will eventually help pave the way for an end to the virus.

“There’s a whole new world we’re about to discover, and kids can help discover that new world so we can all begin enjoying it together,” Thorns, who recently moved from Lawrenceville to Alpharetta, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I want to have sleepovers again like in the old days. I can’t go a week without seeing my friends or without playing with them or doing something with them at least. I need to be able to hug them.”

Her mother, Amanda Moore, is a Chicago transplant who formerly worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and currently works in marketing for Honda Power Equipment. After coordinating the plan with her daughter, she made a social media post advertising the fundraiser.

“We put it together after our prayers and said, ‘This is what we want to do,’” said Moore. “‘Here’s the link, and everything is doubled [by Lysol]. Alani said she wanted to give the money to the CDC to help all the people who are sick, and so that we can go back outside and play.’”

The post took off.

By the time they woke up the next morning, a few hundred dollars was already raised, and Moore told her daughter she better start making some art. The $800 goal was surpassed by lunchtime as the original message got shared and forwarded. Some donated the requested $8, others made contributions of $300 or more. Among those helping out was Chicago Bears Pro Bowl safety Eddie Jackson and Los Angeles-based Love & Hip Hop star Sincere Show, who was diagnosed with the virus in late March and has since recovered.

Thorns, in turn, created 55 pieces of artwork, all original, during the break from attending school online, from drawings to scenes, sketches and abstract works.

“It was very hard actually,” said Thorns. “The only thing I’d do differently next time is I’d think of something like donations instead of pictures because I have a lot of toys that I’d like to donate, and pictures are really hard to do.”

Thorns was inspired by watching #KidsTogether: The Nickelodeon Town Hall, which aimed to provide a kid’s view of life amid the COVID-19 pandemic and featured a child selling artwork. Another inspiration was Moore’s good friend and coworker Davis Adams, who fell ill with the virus in March and needed nearly two weeks to recover.

Moore couldn’t communicate with Adams for several days while he fought the illness, reaching a fever of 105 at peak and visiting the hospital twice. This was despite being in good physical shape and just a few days past his 33rd birthday.

“That’s what put this on our hearts in the beginning,” said Moore. “We knew someone personally who had been affected and was struggling really hard.

”Before coronavirus, Moore and Adams shared a special greeting of tapping index fingers, a ritual Adams describes as being “almost like the ET touch.” On Adams’ last day in the office before going home sick, Moore wasn’t there. She wonders what would have happened if she was.

One the other end, Adams didn’t learn about the fundraiser until he regained health and started reconnecting with the outside world. While fighting the virus he slept upward of 20 hours a day, and shares his experience as a reason it’s crucial to follow social distancing and hygiene guidelines. But once he did learn of the fundraiser, he was moved by what he heard.

“Amanda is such a good mom, you can tell from Alani’s choices the kind of young woman she is raising,” said Adams. “Alani used her birthday to raise money for good. I thought that was crazy and amazing.”Moore still plans to take her daughter to New York City one day, but she’s glad that she made the most of a tough situation.

“I couldn’t be more proud that, even though she’s making sacrifices, her heart is still in the right place,” she said. “She’s still thinking of what she can do for other people.”

Awesome work, Alani!

ViacomCBS Consumer Products Unveils New Geographic Team Structure; Appoints Simon Leslie as VP, Southern Europe and MENA

Simon Leslie on board as vp Southern Europe and MENA as team structured into three geographic territories.

ViacomCBS Consumer Products (VCP) has structured its EMEA team into three geographic territories – UK, Ireland and Israel; Northern and Eastern Europe; and Southern Europe, Middle East and North Africa.

To this end, Simon Leslie (pictured) has been named as Vice President (VP) consumer products for Southern Europe and MENA.

In his new position, Leslie will be responsible for licensing revenues and managing teams across France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East and Africa, which make up a subsection of the newly structured VCP team for EMEAA. His remit will include overseeing the retail sales and marketing division across the region and managing global partnership activity locally with the heads of markets, regions and categories.

Splitting his time between ViacomCBS Networks International's (VCNI) London and Madrid offices, Leslie will dual report to Mark Kingston, Senior Vice President (SVP) of international licensing of VCP, and Thomas Goller, Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of ViacomCBS Networks International Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia (EMEAA).

Simon joins ViacomCBS Consumer Products with over 20 years experience in consumer products across Europe and South America in both emerging and mature markets. Most recently, he served as Managing Director (MD) at Hasbro Italy, responsible for leading seven functions – consumer products, sales, marketing, trade marketing, finance, human resources and IT. Prior to that, he was managing director at Hasbro Chile, Latin America’s most successful market, developing global strategic plans and spearheading all commercial functions, human resources, finance and operations. He also built Hasbro’s core brand market presence at Hasbro Portugal, after moving up the ranks at Hasbro UK. Previously, he also held positions with Crayola and Radica Games.

Kingston said: “Simon has comprehensive knowledge of consumer products and the ability to adapt global strategies to local market needs and opportunities, which will help us grow our international presence and support our partners in Southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Simon is a stellar addition to the team responsible for these important territories.”

Additionally, Felix Ruoff, vice president, Northern and Eastern Europe, will manage the licensing business and teams across Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Nordics, Poland, Central Eastern Europe and Russia. Based in Germany, Ruoff will also report to Kingston and Goller. Venetia Davie, a vice president of VCP, will continue to lead VCP’s U.K., Ireland & Israel business, managing the London-based team and reporting to Kingston.

These changes are the latest in a raft of reorganizations for the newly minted ViacomCBS. Earlier this year, Jules Borkent was promoted to EVP of VCNI kids & family. Additionally, Stefanie Schwartz was named EVP and GM of Viacom Digital Studios.

Do ‘The Snizzle’: Philly rapper and children’s book author Raj Haldar is teaching kids how to sneeze into their elbows

Raj Haldar, the children's book author and rapper-producer known as Lushlife, in Philadelphia in 2016. His song "The Snizzle" created for children's channel Nick Jr., teaches kids to sneeze into the fold of their elbow. | JESSICA GRIFFIN / STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Raj Haldar has to laugh, but he’s not kidding about “The Snizzle.”

"There’s a chance it’s the most consequential thing I’ve ever recorded,” says the Philly rapper-producer, who records as Lushlife.

“The Snizzle” is a dance-rap jam that Haldar — a man of many talents who is also a children’s book author and Lincoln Financial Field DJ on Eagles game days — wrote and produced last year for Nick Jr., the children’s TV channel and Nickelodeon spin-off.

With an 81-second video featuring Dora the Explorer and her canine Paw Patrol friends, “The Snizzle” aims to teach kids proper hygiene.

That means following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines that have become deadly serious during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading Nick Jr. to relaunch “The Snizzle” on social media last week.

QUICK FACTS

What you should know about coronavirus

Updated: March 18, 2020 — 7:55 AM

How many cases have there been?
There have been about 201,500 confirmed cases and 8,000 deaths globally, the vast majority in China and Italy. In the United States, there have been about 6,400 confirmed cases and 114 deaths.

Where is it in the U.S.?
Confirmed cases are escalating across the country, including presumed positives in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Nearly all of the reported deaths have been in Washington state.

What are the symptoms?
Like other respiratory infections, symptoms of coronavirus can include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.

What should you do if you have symptoms?
Patients should call their primary care doctors first. Most people with mild symptoms should probably stay home, but those with more serious ones will likely be seen by the doctor. Difficulty breathing, high fever and a deeper, productive cough can be signs of pneumonia and warrant medical attention.

Who is most at risk?
Older adults and those with chronic ailments have higher risks of death and health complications.

Is there a vaccine?
No, but efforts are underway to develop one, including at Philadelphia’s Wistar Institute.

How can I protect myself?
Use measures you'd take to prevent any airborne virus, like washing your hands often, avoiding crowds and close contact with other people, and disinfecting surfaces and objects. Face masks are not necessary — and might even be harmful — for the general public.

What do all the medical and science terms mean?
Here is a glossary of terms.

Rapper, children's book author teaching kids how to sneeze

PHILADELPHIA — Raj Haldar has to laugh, but he’s not kidding about “The Snizzle.”

“There’s a chance it’s the most consequential thing I’ve ever recorded,” says the Philly rapper-producer, who records as Lushlife.

The song is a musical reminder that when you have to cough or sneeze, think about protecting others, and do it as Dora does: into your elbow!

“When you sneeze, take care

The germs go everywhere

Even if you can’t see them

They floating through the air

They’re sharing your cold

Your cough and your sniffles

The only way to stop them from spreading is ...

THE SNIZZLE!”

Creating cultural content for children wasn’t the plan for Haldar, 38, who grew up in North Jersey.

He studied classical piano and played drums in his high school jazz band

with Ezra Koenig, the Vampire Weekend leader, on sax.

Nineties’ rap changed Haldar’s life. In 2006, his love for the hip-hop band the Roots drew him to Philadelphia, “where my creative life blossomed,” he says.

He has recorded seven albums as Lushlife, including his 2016 “Ritualize” and 2017 multi-artist project “My Idols Are Dead + My Enemies Are In Power,” a benefit for the American Civil Liberties Union.

That year, a Nickelodeon music supervisor familiar with Halder’s brainy rap, in which names like Haruki Murakami, Ray Bradbury and Isabella Rossellini are dropped, approached him about the channel’s Supersonic Science videos.

He was game, he recalls, particularly because “with the state of the music industry and not wanting to be on the road all the time, I was trying to do as much music for film and TV as I possibly could.”

He first contribution was a jaunty jam called “How Does A Tree Grow?” By then, Haldar was already working on the children’s book P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever with Chris Carpenter.

The playful guide to the world of silent letters — other examples: “O is for Ouija” and “T is for Tsunami” — was illustrated by Philadelphia artist Maria Tina Beddia and published by Sourcebooks in 2018. It became an instant best-seller.

Haldar, who now lives in Manhattan but still has a house in South Philly, is in talks to turn “Pterodactyl” into a TV series. He also has a new book with Carpenter on its way, called “No Reading Allowed: The Worst Read Aloud Book Ever.”

It goes “further down the word-nerd direction,” he says, “highlighting how absurd and hilarious sentences chock full of homophones and homonyms can be.”

Facing pages with drawings, by Philadelphia artist Bryce Gladfelter, will illustrate soundalike sentences. Such as: “The new deli clerk runs a pretty sorry store” and “The New Delhi clerk runs a pretty sari store.”

In May, No Reading Allowed is set to launch at New York’s BookExpo, where Haldar will round out a panel with fellow authors Judy Blume, Misty Copeland and Natalie Portman. “So, you know, crazy impostor syndrome,” he says.

Haldar continues to make Lushlife music, including an intriguing collaboration with Philadelphia poet-musician Moor Mother. “Since I was 5 years old, when I look in the mirror, I self-identify as a musician,” he says. “So I have to find ways to keep making music. Just for my own sanity.”

But he’s too busy creating kids content to focus on the grown-up stuff right now. (He’s got a kids’ game coming called “Raj Haldar’s Most Wondrous Creativity Card Game.” And he has his own kid coming.

His wife, Amrita, is due to give birth to a baby girl in the next month. What’s challenging about “The Snizzle” and other Nick Jr. songs, Haldar says, is that “it requires me to think lyrically about explaining some pretty complex concepts in a hyper-simple way that kids can understand and engage with.”

As the world faces an unprecedented public health crisis, Haldar is hopeful “The Snizzle” can help in some way.

The song was partly inspired by the 2015 face-in-your-elbow hip-hop dance craze the Dab. “It’s a brand new dance where you sneeze in your sleeve / That’s the place for your face / Kid, I’m begging you please!”

When he was recording it, Haldar says, the song’s potential impact was an afterthought.

“But now we’re talking abut how exponential the spread of this thing is,” he says. “Maybe the one silver lining is that kids aren’t being impacted by the virus in the same way that adults are. But the fact that they can still be carriers is an enormous public health issue to tackle. And suddenly, this song that we created has an opportunity to play a small part in stemming that. So I would love to see it get out there, far and wide.”

Aria Auditions As “CoCo Siwa”! 📺Ep.5 | All That

Aria Brooks grew up in a family of performers so it is no surprise that she is an amazing All That cast member! On this episode of How Did They Get On TV, Nickelodeon dives into Aria’s life before All That. Find out who inspires Aria, where she learned her skills and her audition as Coco Siwa!

From BSCkids:

Aria Brooks Talks All That And More – Exclusive Interview

Aria Brooks has a lot going on in her career so we were lucky to be able to get a chance to speak with her about how everything we could think of. If you haven’t already make sure to check her out on Nickelodeon’s All That as well as her other movies listed below.

Aria is making her mark on the industry as the newest series regular cast member in the reboot of the widely popular Nickelodeon series All That. Known as the “Saturday Night Live” of Nickelodeon, the show includes different sketches and special guests in every episode. The cast includes Kel Mitchell from the original series along with many brand new faces. New episodes are now airing. Continuing her success on the small screen, Aria can also be seen as Nola in the Netflix anthology series Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings. The series tells eight inspirational stories based on the singer’s song catalog. The cast also includes Delta Burke, Julianne Hough, Kathleen Turner and Kimberly Williams-Paisley to name just a few. It is streaming now. She is also no stranger to the big screen with her appearance in the critically-acclaimed and award-winning film Harriet as Cynthia Erivo’s niece, Anger. The cast also includes Leslie Odom Jr., Clarke Peters, and Vanessa Bell Calloway.

BSCKids: Aria you seem to be very busy lately, can we talk about All That first? How did you get the role on the show?

Aria Brooks: Surprisingly my audition process was a lot shorter than most Nickelodeon auditions. I did a self-tape from home. I had to create two to four sketch characters and prepare the script they gave me. We got word from my agent that they wanted me to fly to LA for a callback. I was so excited. Then a few days after that, they wanted me to test for the role. This time I was in front of Nickelodeon Executives, not just All That staff. I found out the same day that I got the job.

What do you feel like has been your favorite skit so far in All That?

My favorite sketch is between Tammy TMI and Babies who _____. I love Tammy so much because of the crazy things that she says. I love the babies sketch because they are babies doing and saying modern day things.

Have there been any funny behind the scenes things that have happened?

We’ve had so many crazy and silly behind the scenes moments. For example, one time we were running through the Incredible Lucy sketch. We had to run out the door because there was “an active volcano”. I ran out, slipped and fell. Nathan started dragging me out the door and everyone was laughing because they thought I meant to do that.

If you could have any guest star on All That, who would it be and why?

I would want Zendaya to guest star on the show. She is really funny and she has been my role model for years now. I would be thrilled to meet her, let alone work with her.

Tell us a bit about your role in Harriet and how the filming went?

I played Anger, Harriet’s niece. Anger is a slave who does everything she is told. When Harriet comes to save her, she is scared at first but soon learns that she is her aunt. She throws her apron down and even holds the masters’ children at gunpoint. She was relieved to be on the other side of things.

How was it meeting Dolly Parton during your work as Nola on the series Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings?

It was amazing! She was so nice and, although she didn’t film with us, she left a lasting impression. She introduced herself to everyone and she was so sweet.

Who do you feel has taught you the most in your acting career?

I think my mom has taught me the most. She has given me endless advice and tips on how to carry myself. My mom filmed and coached me in my auditions whenever we had a self-tape. She filmed my audition for Harriet, Dolly Parton, and All That. Her coaching has helped me a lot. She was even my teacher in elementary school, so sometimes she would refer back to her lessons when we did auditions.

Tell us a bit about the two singles you have produced?

They are promoting self-love and self-care. You have to not only be yourself but also take care of yourself. My first single, Truly Me, was about staying true to who you are. Don’t worry about anybody else or try to be like anyone else. My second single, Time Off, is about giving yourself a break when it’s due. You can’t overwork yourself.

Tell us something people would be surprised to learn about you?

People may not know that I have never had sketch comedy training. I have taken a few improv classes, but I was mostly focused on drama. A lot of my training came from either my mom or watching comedy and taking mental notes. By mental notes, I mean what I thought was funny about it and how did the characters make it funny.

Anything else you want to tell us about yourself?

I am a huge music lover, as you probably know, but my favorite genres are Pop and Alternative. I love Melanie Martinez, Ariana Grande, Tate McRae, and Serena Laurel.

It was great having the opportunity to talk to Aria Brooks and wish her well in her career!

'Paw Patrol' Movie from Spin Master and Nickelodeon Movies, with Paramount Pictures Distributing, Set for August 2021 Release

Update (4/25) - Paramount Pictures has scheduled the PAW Patrol movie for Friday, August 20, 2021!

Paw Patrol™ Animated Motion Picture from Spin Master and Nickelodeon Movies, with Paramount Pictures Distributing, Set for August 2021 Release

Veteran Animation Director Cal Brunker to Helm the Global Powerhouse Franchise Adaptation

TORONTO, Feb. 21, 2020 - Spin Master Corp. (TSX:TOY; www.spinmaster.com), a leading global children's entertainment company, announced today it is taking its powerhouse franchise PAW Patrol from the small screen to the big screen. The major motion picture animated feature film, a Spin Master Entertainment production in association with Nickelodeon Movies, will be distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film is slated to arrive in theaters in August 2021 and will be directed by animation veteran Cal Brunker (Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature; Escape From Planet Earth).

Spin Master Entertainment's Executive Vice President, Jennifer Dodge, will produce the film and Ronnen Harary, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Spin Master, Adam Beder, Executive Vice President, Strategic Partnership & Franchise Development for Spin Master, and Peter Schlessel will executive produce. Representing a new chapter for this continually growing entertainment franchise, the feature film is based on the award-winning, hit preschool series produced by Spin Master Entertainment and broadcast globally by Nickelodeon.

PAW Patrol animated motion picture set for August 2021 release.

"We are thrilled to partner with Paramount and Nickelodeon to bring the PAW Patrol franchise, and the characters that children love, to the big screen," said Dodge. "This first foray into the arena of feature film marks a significant strategic expansion for Spin Master Entertainment and our properties. This demonstrates our commitment to harnessing our own internal entertainment production teams to develop and deliver IP in a motion picture format and allows us to connect our characters to fans through shared theatrical experiences."

"Expanding PAW Patrol into the world of theatricals is a major milestone for this iconic property, and we can't wait for kids and families everywhere to experience it together," said Brian Robbins, President, Kids & Family Entertainment, ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks. "We are incredibly excited to work with Spin Master Entertainment and our sister division Paramount Pictures on this latest title from the Nickelodeon Movies slate."

"We are thrilled to be distributing this film and sharing the beloved PAW Patrol universe with audiences around the globe," said Marc Weinstock, Paramount's President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, and Mary Daily, Co- President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution.

The PAW Patrol movie is the first of a number of feature films in the works by Spin Master's Entertainment division.

It is also the most recent in a raft of Nickelodeon properties to get the Paramount treatment, following in the footsteps of 2016′s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, 2019′s Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and this year’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

For years PAW Patrol has been a driving force behind sales for the company’s preschool and girls segment (up 7% to US$493 million in fiscal 2017 and up 5% to US$517.5 million in fiscal 2018). The brand recently stumbled as declines contributed to the segment dipping 23.3% to US$63.3 million in Q1 2019, though it bounced back in Q2 2019 (up 10% to US$96.4 million).

Currently entering its seventh season on Nickelodeon, PAW Patrol's universal messaging resonates with children around the world and since its launch in 2013, the franchise has won countless awards.

Update (3/10) - Spin Master revealed during their Fourth Quarter 2019 Earnings Conference Call that the PAW Patrol movie will feature an all-new location, a new pup, and will be animated in a high-quality feature film animation!

"Adding to our partnership and continuing to build the strength of PAW Patrol as a franchise, we are excited to launch the first-ever full-length animated PAW Patrol theatrical film in association with Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures. Paramount will be distributing the film starting August 21, and this has been a really exciting journey for us as a company and represents our first foray into feature film.

The film will feature an all-new location, a new pup, and will be animated in a high-quality feature film animation. Our goal is for PAW Patrol to be the first of many feature films and will set the foundation for other properties to follow onto the big screen. We expect PAW Patrol to continue to be a strong contributor to our sales for many years based on new themes and innovative products."

From License Global:

Spin Master: An Epic Toy Story

Learn why mastering kids' entertainment for decades is no child's play.

A Hollywood scriptwriter couldn’t dream up a more inspiring tale than the real-life story behind global children’s entertainment powerhouse Spin Master. In just roughly three decades since its inception, Spin Master is firmly poised to conquer the toy industry throne as one of the top seeds among kids’ entertainment mainstays that have dominated the space for decades.

If the past is any indication of the future, Spin Master is on pace to expand exponentially, outpacing the growth of legacy toy-industry giants and even surpassing purely-entertainment-focused companies. With a bevy of world-renowned flagship properties, nine television series, countless award-winning toy products, a behemoth licensing roster, key business acquisitions and an elite team of executives leading a host of offices across the globe – Spin Master is a study of entrepreneurship and business acumen.

Of course, the Toronto, Canada-headquartered billion-dollar public company is where it is today thanks to a series of pivotal licensing wins that any company, serving any product category, could benefit to learn from. The phenomenal story behind the company that introduced brands like “PAW Patrol,” Bakugan and Hatchimals, to name just a few, began humbly in 1994.

Planting the Seeds for Success

Soon after graduating from The University of Western Ontario, childhood friends Ronnen Harary and Anton Rabie founded Spin Master. With their own investment of $10,000, Harary and Rabie launched Spin Master’s very first product: Earth Buddy, a nylon stocking-covered head of sawdust coated with grass seeds that sprouted to emulate hair (à la Chia Pet). The duo sold the item on the street and eventually got product into specialty retailers, garnering enough success to expand their operation into a small facility in Downtown Toronto.

The next big win came in 1998, when Spin Master launched its popular Air Hogs brand, a technologically advanced, affordable product with a miniature engine and remote-control operation. The success of the product propelled Spin Master to expand into other regions.

Between 2002-2007, Spin Master grew its international footprint and opened offices in Western Europe as well as an innovation hub in Los Angeles, Calif. The growth continued as Spin Master made its first pivotal purchase– acquiring X-Concepts, the maker of Tech Deck.

And then came the birth of one of its superstar properties.

Capturing the Spotlight

In 2007, Spin Master created its most successful product up to that point – Bakugan. Beginning as a sketch of a ball that would open to reveal a character inside, Bakugan exploded into popularity, quickly becoming a hit brand among boys ages 5-10 and went on to be the subject of a global animated television series, marking Spin Master’s foray into content production. With the boys segment locked in and bringing the. company even further financial growth, Spin Master then astutely focused eff orts to target girls, creating a new property, Zoobles.

“Innovation, not only innovation in our products, entertainment and brands but also in our business approach, makes Spin Master unique,” says Juli Boylan, vice president, franchise development and outbound licensing, Spin Master. “We are constantly scouring for new and unique opportunities. We have an entrepreneurial spirit, so we are relentlessly thinking outside of the box.”

By taking the Bakugan brand from a germ of an idea to a hit product and then to a popular animated series, Spin Master became the toy company to watch.

“What started as an inventor’s sketch on a napkin led to a worldwide success, validating Spin Master’s tenets of partnership, integrity and entrepreneurial spirit,” says Jennifer Dodge, senior vice president, entertainment, Spin Master. “From the original idea to the team of partners assembled to bring the show to life, it epitomized Spin Master’s long-held commitment to innovation. Spin Master grew exponentially during the during the four-to-five years that Bakugan was at its prime.”

Acquiring New Heights

Perched on the back of Bakugan’s immense success, Spin Master was able to make a series of key acquisitions that elevated the company to another level.

“Strategic acquisitions have propelled Spin Master’s innovation into new categories, strengthening existing business and creating new opportunities for growth,” says Boylan. “These acquisitions have further reinforced Spin Master’s position as licensor and licensee.”

The acquisition of Spy Gear expanded Spin Master’s portfolio of boys’ action and outdoor toys. Acquiring Meccano brought Spin Master into the building sets category. Buying Cardinal Games made Spin Master a leading manufacturer in the games and puzzles category in North America. Other key acquisitions include GUND, Etch A Sketch, Toca Boca/Sago Mini, Swimways, Marbles, Aerobie and Perplexus.

“The acquisition of Toca Boca and Sago Mini, with their strong brand presence, allowed Spin Master to develop a leadership position in the mobile app space for kids, rounding out our ability to entertain kids in both the physical and digital world,” adds Boylan.

Stealing the Show

Spin Master launched its entertainment division in 2008 in an effort to create cross-platform children’s content that would complement its expansive toy offering. Since then, the division has produced more than 200 half-hours of kids’ programming for television, film and the web – including one wildly popular series about a group of special dogs.

In 2014, Spin Master launched “PAW Patrol,” its first fully in-house developed multi-platform property. The CGI-animated series, airing on Nickelodeon, and its accompanying toy line, is arguably one of Spin Master’s biggest wins. Led by 10-year-old Ryder, a group of heroic pups – Chase, Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Skye, Everest, Zuma and Tracker – embark on various brave missions to help those in need.

“Storytelling and characters are at the heart of everything that we do, whether it’s entertainment or toy,” says Dodge. “Spin Master’s deep understanding of play gives a unique perspective and insight that helps to create story worlds and toys that resonate with children and elicit that ‘wow’ moment. We are known for our innovation and commitment to high quality with meticulous attention to detail that results in experiences that capture the hearts and minds of global audiences, whether on screen or through physical play.”

Since their debut, the “PAW Patrol” pups have gone on to capture the hearts of kids across the globe. “‘PAW Patrol’ is now an evergreen global franchise that airs in more than 160 countries, consistently ranking as one of, if not the No. 1-rated preschool series,” adds Dodge. The runaway success of “PAW Patrol” was pivotal to Spin Master’s remarkable journey, adding handsomely to the company’s expansion and, ultimately, its ability to go public in July 2015.

Securing the Throne

Serving as the backbone, pulse and heartbeat that pumps life into Spin Master’s continual growth is its award-winning licensing program. Spin Master is both a licensor and a licensee with a track record of securing best-in-class partnerships that consistently win at retail.

“In addition to valuable owned IP, Spin Master continues to attract a highly sought-after portfolio of licensed products, most recently a 10-year partnership with Feld Entertainment for Monster Jam (worldwide master toy partner), a three-year license partnership with DC (boys’ action category) and securing the master toy rights for DreamWorks Animation’s new preschool series ‘Gabby’s Dollhouse,’” says Boylan.

Spin Master’s impressive and dynamic licensing program kicked off with Hatchimals.

“Hatchimals was a genuine phenomenon when it was released in October 2016,” says Boylan. “We could never have predicted the success we would see at launch. To be sold out well before the holidays, with as much buzz as it had, shook up the industry a bit – that a non-licensed, new toy brand could achieve so much, so quickly. This got us a lot of attention from potential licensees, who began pitching us as quickly as we began pitching them.”

Spin Master secured deals for Hatchimals across several product categories.

“We capitalized on the excitement around the initial launch, and in 2017, we signed more than 50 Hatchimals product license agreements,” says Boylan. “Among the initial categories was publishing, which was very important to us right from the start. We were so lucky to partner with the amazing teams at Penguin Random House to build out the lore of Hatchtopia. Back-to-school also really drove our initial offerings. We wanted to launch with the right assortment of products for that time of year: apparel, backpacks, lunch bags, hosiery, stationery, etc., so that we could be as relevant as possible, as soon as possible.”

Today, Spin Master has hundreds of partners delivering product all across the world. Spin Master licensed products cover major categories including toys, apparel, accessories, stationery, home, back-to-school, youth electronics, sporting goods and publishing. According to Boylan, Spin Master will focus future eff orts on corporate partnerships and the “better-for-you” food and beverage category.

Some of the company’s most notable recent partners include retailer H&M, which launched a “Toca Life”-themed collection of apparel and accessories that was so successful, it inspired a new line planned for release later this year. Other major partners include Tastemakers (backpack clip-ons), Sakar (youth electronics), Flix Candy (confectionery), Immediate Media (magazines in the U.K.) and Showtime Attractions (live events in Australia), among many others.

Spin Master has also strategically tapped into consumers’ love for nostalgia by deploying comprehensive programs around its acquired classic legacy brands. “Spin Master has built a reputation for acquiring legacy brands and infusing them with unexpected innovation while also leveraging their licensing potential; for example, Etch A Sketch,” says Boylan. “This year marks an exciting milestone for the classic red-framed drawing toy, as it marks its 60th anniversary. To celebrate the original magic screen, the Etch A Sketch brand has teamed up with other iconic brands to unveil a series of limited-edition launches inspired by the classic board game Monopoly, space exploration leader NASA, heritage toy Rubik’s and comic book marvel Stan Lee. Each will have their own limited-edition Etch A Sketch drawing toy, merging two iconic worlds into one magic, shake-to-erase collector’s item.”

The remarkable 2019 revival of the Bakugan brand is also raking in licensing gold.

“We have also launched our global licensing efforts for Bakugan, building on the brand’s rich heritage and adapting to a new generation of fans,” says Boylan. “Spin Master is managing sales in the U.S. and has appointed Nelvana to manage Canada and France, CPLG for the U.K. and EMEA (excluding France), Tycoon for Latin America (excluding Mexico), La Panadería for Mexico and Haven for Australia/New Zealand. The licensing program leverages the key attributes of the brand – battling, gaming and collectability with a style guide based on anime-styled art.”

Spin Master is also wisely flexing its licensee muscle, picking up powerhouse partners each step of the way.

“From a licensee perspective, within one year of the 2018 acquisition of premium plush legacy brand GUND, Spin Master secured the fi rst licensee rights for ‘Hilda,’ Silvergate’s new Netflix animated-adventure TV series, and Line Friends, one of the fastest-growing global character brands in the world,” adds Boylan.

GUND’s trusted 120-year legacy is a draw for hugely successful brands, creating the ultimate collaboration to bring beloved characters and personalities to life. A great example of this is Doug the Pug, the most-followed pug on the internet with more than 13 million collective followers. GUND will be expanding its collection of the internet superstar, revealing items at New York Toy Fair this month, as well as a special appearance by the top dog himself. Spin Master’s largest market is North America. It leverages the help of licensing agencies to further expand in other regions. Agencies include CPLG (U.K. and EMEA), Tycoon (Latin America), Haven (Australia) and Segal Licensing (Canada).

Winning Recognition

Innovation is coded deeply within the DNA of Spin Master. The company tops the list of Innovative Toy of the Year Award nominations. Spin Master has won 30 TOTY Awards and has been nominated for 110 TOTY Awards. It received a whopping seven nominations for the 2020 TOTY Awards, which reveals winners on Feb. 21. This year’s nominations include License of the Year (“PAW Patrol” Mighty Pups Super PAWs), Action Figure of the Year (Bakugan Dragonoid Maximus), Vehicle Toy of the Year (Monster Jam MEGA Grave Digger Remote Control), Creative Toy of the Year (Cool Maker Go Glam Nail Stamper), Doll of the Year (Candylocks basic doll), Construction Toy of the Year (Erector by Meccano and inventor set) and Intro to Robotics and Preschool Toy of the Year (Demo Duke).

The Saga Continues

“Evergreen global properties including preschool powerhouse ‘PAW Patrol,’ relaunched global battling phenomenon Bakugan and the magic of Hatchimals have established Spin Master as a leader in content creation, toy development and franchise-building,” says Boylan.

Spin Master is a bonafide leader in business – with a winning strategy of leaning heavily on creativity.

“As creators, designers and manufacturers of innovative toys and games as well as producers of successful entertainment properties, Spin Master’s focus is on pushing the boundaries of innovation, creativity and fun,” adds Boylan.

With a laser-sharp focus on innovation, agility and growth, Spin Master’s innumerable victories achieved over the span of nearly three-decades will continue in 2020 and beyond. The epic story of Spin Master has no end in sight. The rest is still unwritten.
