First Look At 'Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie'

Nickelodeon and Netflix today (June 30) unveiled a first look at the upcoming brand new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated film, set to premiere on Friday, August 5, 2022 on Netflix!

In addition to the sceenshots above, Netflix also today released their Netflix Family Summer highlights trailer, featuring a couple of clips from the film, as well as the movie's logo!:

Titled Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, the Nickelodeon pic picks up the turtles when a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning. Leo is forced to rise and lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species…the Krang! The movie is directed by Ant Ward and Andy Suriano, written by writers Tony Gama-Lobo and Rebecca May, and produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The voice cast stars Ben Schwartz, Omar Benson Miller, Brandon Mychal Smith, Josh Brener, Kat Graham, Eric Bauza, Haley Joel Osment. The Rise of the TMNT movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 22 minutes.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie is based on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Nickelodeon's 2D-animated follow up to the network's CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Premiering in 2018 and running for two seasons, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an action-comedy series follows the band of brothers as they discover new powers and encounter a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City.

The series stars the voice talent of Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raph, a jagged-shelled snapping turtle; Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leo, a red-eared slider turtle; Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donnie, a soft-shell turtle; Brandon Mychal Smith (You're The Worst) as Mikey, a box turtle; Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O'Neil, a street savvy native New Yorker; Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Splinter, father figure and sensei to the Turtles; and WWE Superstar John Cena as the villainous, Baron Draxum.

Nickelodeon and Netflix first announced plans for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie as well as a animated movie inspired by The Loud House in February 2019, as part of Nickelodeon and Paramount Global's broader efforts to tap into Nickelodeon's intellectual properties (IP) to continue producing new content for digital and linear platforms. Nickelodeon and Netflix expanded on their pact to form a new, multi-year output deal to produce original animated feature films and television series - based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new IP - for kids and families around the world.

The Loud House Movie premiered on Netflix on August 20, 2021. The Rise of the TMNT flick was originally slated to premiere around the same time, but was postponed until this year.

Leading up to the debut of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie, Netflix will be adding season one of Nickelodeon's 2012 CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and the freshman season of the network's 2D-animated Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on May 31.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie is one of several TMNT projects in the pipeline: Nickelodeon Animation is partnering with Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver to develop a new CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, "The Next Chapter", which will be released in theaters on August 4, 2023. The pic will be Nickelodeon Animation Studio’s first-ever CG theatrical release. Meanwhile, Colin Jost (Saturday Night Live) and his brother Casey (Impractical Jokers) are also reportedly penning a new live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie for Paramount, although his is still currently unconfirmed. Paramount+ also announced earlier this year that it'll be producing a series of exclusive movies for the streaming service, beginning in 2023, each centering on one of the property’s storied villains in never-before-told tales.

Avatar The Last Airbender: Creators Clarify Franchise's Canon Ahead Of New Movies

The executive producers of the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender theatrical animated movies have revealed where those projects stand in the canon.

The executive producers of the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender animated movies have divulged how those films stand in the overall canon of the franchise. The sprawling franchise began in 2005 with the release of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which introduced a universe where people from various regions can "bend" one of the four elements, while the reincarnated Avatar can bend all four and bring balance to the world. The franchise has taken on a life of its own, expanding into graphic novels, books, video games, the spin-off sequel series The Legend of Korra.

The Avatar universe has continued to expand in several directions. In addition to an upcoming live-action series created by Netflix, the newly created Avatar Studios is developing a trilogy of theatrical animated films from the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The first film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery, a storyboard artist and supervising producer on Korra. Although not much is currently known about the projects, it is rumored that each film will focus on an individual character, with the trilogy covering the stories of Avatar Kiyoshi, Prince Zuko, and Avatar Korra, the Avatar who is reincarnated from The Last Airbender's Aang who is lead character of The Legend of Korra.

On the June 28 episode of the Comic Con Meta*Pod podcast, the hosts did a massive deep dive into the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. This includes discussions with actors Janet Varney (Korra) and Dante Basco (Zuko), as well as a sitdown with co-creators and executive producers Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. During the conversation, Konietzko and DiMartino broke down how the new projects will interact each other, revealing that they are all part of the same universe, but are not being directly adapted from extant Avatar stories for the time being. However, they admit that this might lead to canon issues that require "some little tweaks here and there." Read their full quote below:

Michael: “I think the thing we’re not doing now– not saying this couldn’t happen some day– is, like, we’re not adapting the graphic novels into a [movie or] TV show, we’re not adapting the YA novels into a movie or TV show. Again, that could happen in the future.”

Bryan: “But we are feeding off of them.”

Michael: “We’ve been involved in all those main ancillary stories, so in our minds it’s mostly canon. There’s probably some stuff if we may go back, like: ‘that doesn’t totally line up with this’, so there may be some little tweaks here and there, but as of right now we’re proceeding as if all this stuff is part of the proper universe and hopefully building on it.”

The Avatar universe has spread out in so many directions that it is likely difficult to keep track of every last detail. Although the producers are deprioritizing an exacting canon, hopefully this means that they will focus on telling interesting stories with layered and compelling characters. The emotional resonance at the core of the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise is what brought fans to it in the first place, after all.

This quote will likely rankle with certain fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, however. The show has curated such a robust mythology that many people who grew up with the property approach it as a sort of holy writ, akin to the Jedi in Star Wars. Hopefully the films will be of a high enough quality that certain small errors don't muck up the canon to too distressing a degree.

Avatar Studios’ CG Animation To Be 2D, Not 3D Stylized To Look 2D

In a new interview with Comic Con Meta*Pod, Avatar Studios co-head Bryan Konietzko revealed that the upcoming animated Avatar: The Last Airbender content coming from the studio will be 2D, not 3D. However, he and Michael DiMartino didn’t confirm whether if it will be traditionally animated, and hinted that it won’t be fully.

It was reported that the movies were supposed to be CG, and that Nickelodeon was developing a custom 2D CG style for the content. It was speculated that this meant they would be following in the footsteps of animation such as the Spider-Verse movies and Arcane series, which are animated in 3D stylized to look 2D. Avatar Studios has confirmed that they won’t be doing this– though they considered it last year, which could be why they said it would be CG at the time.

The animation will be 2D. However, it's speculated that the reason they’re hinting that it's not all traditional animation like ATLA and The Legend of Korra is because CG-animation will still be used at some point in production. They say they’re “starting” from hand drawings, not that the animation itself will be hand-drawn, but it’s pretty vague.

Here’s the full excerpt (from the section starting at 1:16:15 in the podcast linked above):

Bryan: “We love all sorts of animation, and we’re gonna be doing all sorts of things, but our main bread and butter is 2D animation. It’s an homage to anime and all the stuff that we love. That doesn’t mean we’re gonna be, like, hardcore straightedge 2D using cels and painting the backgrounds with poster paint. The way we always look at it is: start with hand-drawn, handmade artwork and then: what can technology do to help us enhance it, to help us deepen it, to help the filmmaking, to make it more cinematic? But we’re always gonna be coming at it from that [2D] direction. We’re not planning on doing anything, at the moment, especially none of our big projects, that are starting purely 3D and then trying to stylize them. We looked at it, we thought about it, and there’s beautiful stuff happening in that space– Arcane and Spider-Verse are gorgeous and groundbreaking and pushing the envelope, but that’s their own look and we’re not chasing that stuff. We didn’t form Avatar Studios to go chasing someone else’s coattails. I think that stuff’s beautiful, but a ton of other studios are chasing those looks. Leave that to them; those artists worked hard to form that look and we’re looking hard to form our own look, but we’re not doing anything purely 3D.”

This new information suggests that the art style used will be more-or-less replicating what ATLA and TLOK looked like (what it looks like if you pause it), but that the animation itself (what it looks like in motion) might not be. It doesn’t seem like it’s going to be traditional animators drawing every frame like before, but rather some kind of new computer animating process with the 2D visual starting point. However, again, they’re being really vague so we don’t know for sure.

Jamie Lynn Spears Hints That 'Zoey 101' Reboot Is Still In The Works

Are you ready?

The first two seasons of Nickelodeon's beloved noughties comedy Zoey 101 recently hit Netflix, with the series climbing the streamer's Top 10 list as old and new fans alike discover the series on the platform, and as the show gains popularity once again, Jamie Lynn Spears, who played Zoey Brooks in the show, has hinted that the story isn't over yet!

In Zoey 101, teenager Zoey settles in at her new boarding school in Malibu and makes a wide range of new friends. The Pacific Coast Academy (PCA) used to be a boys-only school, and since the girls have arrived, so has the romance. Zoey and roommates find their way together facing teen topics from a light-hearted perspective.

The series ran for four seasons between 2005 and 2008, and starred Jamie Lynn Spears as Zoey Brooks; Sean Flynn as Chase Matthews; Erin Sanders as Quinn Pensky; Chris Massey as Michael Barret; Logan Reese as Matthew Underwood; Paul Butcher as Dustin Brooks; Kristin Herrera as Dana Cruz; Alexa Nikolas as Nicole Bristow; Victoria Justice as Lola Martinez; and Austin Butler, who is currently melting hearts in the Elvis biopic, as James Garrett.

With the series recently dropping on Netflix, fans understandably went crazy over the box set, prompting the actor to note on Instagram that the show made it to the Top 10 on the streaming platform.

Now, 14 years on from the series ending and the 31-year-old has vowed that the 'story isn’t finished'.

She wrote on Instagram: “Umm, so Zoey is Top 10 on Netflix! This show, and the fans of this show mean the absolute world to me.

“I know y’all have been patiently waiting, so all I’m gonna say is I PROMISE this story isn’t finished…”

A Zoey 101 reboot has actually been in the works for quite some time now, with the cast reuniting in 2020 for an All That sketch, in which Jamie Lynn reprised her iconic character "Thelma Stump." The reunion was to see if the cast would still work well together for a Zoey 101 reboot.

The following October, Jamie hosted The Follow Me (Zoey 101) Experience - The Legacy Continues, a live stream event which included a new version of the show's iconic theme song, "Follow Me," which also featured social media influencers popular today.

In 2015, fans were to treated to finally finding out what Zoey said in the "Time Capsule" episode. In the episode, the Pacific Coast Academy gang have to decide what to put in a time capsule that represented themselves. Zoey chose to make a DVD, explaining what all of her friends meant to her. Desperate to hear what Zoey said about him, Chase started to dig up the time capsule, seeing if his "one true love" loved him back. But, he stopped after realizing it was wrong to watch Zoey's DVD without her knowing, and buried it back.

Jamie Lynn has previously said that she wanted her daughter Maddie to star in the Zoey 101 reboot, and she wants Zoey and Chase to have a "happy ending" in the revival.

Update (12/10) - A listing for Zoey 102 has appeared on Production Weekly.

The first two seasons of Zoey 101 are currently available on Netflix, with all four seasons of the series available to stream on Paramount+. Try it FREE at ParamountPlus.com.
