ViacomCBS Int'l Studios to Develop New Children’s Musical Series 'Funknautas'

In a bid to support diverse and inclusive storytelling both behind and in front of the camera, ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) is developing a new children’s musical series called Funknautas.


It’s the first kids project to come out of VIS’s new Elevating Diverse Creators strategy to invest 25% of its budget in Latin America in order to create and develop content that highlights marginalized characters and creators. This commitment follows the company rolling out a “no diversity, no commission” policy, first in the UK in July and then globally in October.

Funknautas stars Betina, a girl from the streets who starts a pop/funk band with three rich kids in secret, only to have their social media videos go viral. No details on format, where the series will air or delivery date have been announced.

“Diversity and inclusion is an essential part of everything we do in all of our content. ViacomCBS as a whole is committed to D&I through the implementation of different initiatives, and at VIS we are taking firm steps to fulfil that commitment in front of and behind the camera ”, said Federico Cuervo, SVP & Head of VIS.

In addition to Funknautas, VIS has also announced two more projects being developed from its Elevating Diverse Creators initiative: Maria do Socorro, a drama series that stars women who help other women by putting the needs of others before their own and trying to confront a prejudiced and sexist society; and A coisa tá preta, a stand-up comedy series that portrays the daily life of a group of artists. Meanwhile, in Brazil, ViacomCBS participates in different festivals and local talent meetings, to find new stories that raise the value of diversity and inclusion of people of colour.

The show announcement also comes in the wake of VIS launching a kids division led by Nickelodeon International’s Senior Vice President (SVP) of production and development, Nina Hahn. VIS Kids aims to broaden the company’s global pipeline to include short- and long-form content for children. The division is currently working on Sharkdog, its first international series made for Netflix.

VIS also inked a first-look deal with Santiago Segura, the director, writer and producer of top-grossing Spanish-language family comedy feature Father There Is Only One, and has acquired the audio-visual rights to Ruth Rocha's hit Brazilian children's book series, Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo.

Outside of LatAm, ViacomCBS Networks International’s EMEA divisions have pledged 30% of their 2021 budgets to produce stories focused on underrepresented groups.

  • Maria do Socorro, a drama series with female main characters who help other women, putting others' needs before their own while trying to live in a discriminatory and sexist society.
  • A coisa tá preta, a stand-up comedy series that portrays the daily life of a group of artists.
  • Funknautas, a children's musical series that tells the relationship between Betina, a girl from the streets, and three children, who live in a mansion whose parents are renowned musicians. Bettina and the three children decide secretly to form a pop/funk band in the mansion basement, hidden from their parents, but their social media videos go viral.

Accordingly, VCNI's Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia divisions have also committed to allocating 30% of their 2021 budget to produce stories focused on or related to issues of underrepresented groups.

CBS has also set a target for 50% BIPOC representation across all casts for its unscripted series, beginning in the 2021-22 broadcast season.

Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and Nickelodeon Partner for 'Science of Slime' Virtual Exhibit

‘Science of Slime’ series teach kids and their families about the slimiest of animals with help from popular Nickelodeon characters; fun educational videos, DIY activities, and weekly live program runs now through December 14.

LOS ANGELES -- The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) is partnering with Nickelodeon to explore the “Science of Slime” with experts and educators showcasing the many ways plants, animals, and other organisms use slime to survive. With the help of popular Nickelodeon characters and Ryan Alessi from Nick’s All That, kids and families can get to know some of the world's slimiest species—from frogs to fish to snails—through fun and educational videos, DIY activities, and weekly live programs with NHM scientists at NHM.org/slime.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to showcase how fun scientific work and discovery can be, and to make our research and collections accessible and engaging for the widest possible audience,” commented Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County. “We are grateful to Nickelodeon for this partnership and for inspiring young people to see some of their favorite programs and the world around them in a new light. With the videos, events, and activities, we hope to provide encouragement and tips for how to pursue careers in science and natural history and show what it’s like to work at a science-focused museum.”


The new custom “Science of Slime” webpage will feature kid-friendly information and allow online visitors to access “Science of Slime” content and downloadable activities in one place. All content will be available in English and Spanish. NHM’s gallery interpreters and scientists collaborated on a slime-inspired virtual tour that will take viewers on a journey through NHM halls and behind-the-scenes into their collections. Hosted by Ryan Alessi from Nickelodeon’s All That, the video will offer a new perspective on the specimens on display and cared for in the collections, providing access to many items rarely seen by the public. DIY activities developed by NHM’s 2020 Marine Science Interns will help audiences continue their at-home exploration with simple step-by-step activities and projects designed for family audiences that feature popular Nickelodeon characters from SpongeBob SquarePants and paired with fun, informational videos also created by the interns.

"NHMLAC is the ideal partner for a scientific exploration of Nickelodeon’s slime and in helping to make science fun and accessible to kids,” remarked Andrew Machles, Vice President of Public Affairs at Nickelodeon’s parent company Viacom. “We have collaborated with the museum’s experts to create content that we hope will inspire more kids to connect with nature and pursue an interest in scientific careers.”


Nickelodeon has produced six videos featuring scientists from NHM’s Research and Collections department, along with a virtual slime-related tour of the museum led by Alessi. Edited with clips from Nickelodeon programs that add levity and help show the science reflected in Nick’s approach to television, these videos will enable viewers to learn about each scientist’s role at the Museum, what slimy species they study, and help them discover mind-blowing facts about the ways slime functions in nature. For example, a video with Regina Wetzer, PhD., Director, Marine Biodiversity Center and Dean Pentcheff, Project Coordinator, Diversity Initiative for the Southern California Ocean, will introduce viewers to a glass rope sponge in the Museum’s collection that is a very distantly related cousin to SpongeBob, paired with snippets from SpongeBob that illustrate the scientists’ fun facts about how some sponges make a skeleton by secreting glass. Viewers will also be introduced to the pet snake Audubon of Greg Pauly, Ph.D., Curator, Herpetology and the crocheted sea slugs of Jann Vendetti, Ph.D., Associate Curator, Malacology studies as these scientists show off key species found at the Museum.

Each Monday and Thursday through December 14 (except on Thanksgiving), NHM’s education team and live animal program will host assembly-style webinars that enable students and teachers to participate from their virtual classroom. The sessions will allow participants to meet a scientist or a live animal and will allow them to submit their own questions to be answered.

The partnership between Nickelodeon and NHM grew out of a 2019 collaboration for the Museum’s annual Nature Fest. NHM teamed up with Nickelodeon to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, presenting the "Science of SpongeBob" to over 9,000 attendees. Along with costume character meet and greets, NHM Marine Biodiversity Center scientists led a hands-on activity to teach participants about the institution’s ongoing eDNA research and the real species that inspired the show's main characters.

Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) has partnered with Argentinian fashion label Simones to launch a colourful brand new collection inspired by Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants!


Titled Bob Esponja Collab, the range spans bags and purses, backpacks, clothing, accessories and pet accessories, with each item featuring SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom friends.


The collaboration launched on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, and is available at Simones.com.ar.

The Argentinian brand has teamed with ViacomCBS Consumer Products being elevated by the popular sea sponge.

ViacomCBS Consumer Products Latin America announced that it has partnered with Argentine accessories brand, Simones, for The Collab Collection: SpongeBob + Simones.

The collection is an exclusive new line featuring Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants. It comprises three colorful lines: “Square,” “Hey Bob!” and “Bubble,” with SpongeBob and his friends from Bikini Bottom starring in an assortment of handbags, purses, backpacks, apparel and accessories. The

E.G. Daily Talks the Legacy of 'Rugrats'

E.G. Daily is a TV icon. Over nearly 30 years, the actor has voiced beloved characters like Tommy Pickles in Rugrats and Buttercup in The Powerpuff Girls. On top of her incredible voice work, she’s a singer as well. She recently released the new single “Don’t Worry About Me,” benefitting Last Chance for Animals.


A reboot of the classic Nickelodeon animated series Rugrats has been in the works since 2018. When HollywoodLife had the chance to chat with E.G., the actor was tight-lipped about the reboot, but she knows how much of an impact the show has had on those who watched it. “I can’t exactly say anything about it right now. But I will say that there has been a reboot announcement, and I think it’s going to be great,” E.G. said. “It’s such an amazing show that transformed so many people’s lives. Generation after generation has watched it, and it would be so cool to see the newest generations watching and the new moms watching with their kids, and the grandparents who watch it with their kids.”


The CG-animated reboot of Rugrats, in which E.G. will reprise her iconic role of Tommy Pickles, is expected to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2021. The classic Rugrats series is available to stream today on CBS All Access.

In Sept. 2020, E.G. released the single “Don’t Worry About Me,” a cover of a Frances song. She explained how she first came across the song and why she’s using her voice to convey a message that’s important to her.


“I was sitting around catching up on a lot of movies, and I heard this song at the end of a movie. It was written by Frances, who is this lovely singer-songwriter, and I just knew I had to get the rights to cut that song,” she told HollywoodLife. “Somehow it just sort of came together safely during COVID. For me, it was a message about unconditional love and just putting your heart into something that matters more than anything. To me, that was animals. I do a lot of work with Last Chance for Animals, which is one of my favorite animal rescues. They do the most amazing work stopping animal abuse, especially the South Korean dog meat trade. This song just came together, and I made the video and the song dedicated to that. Anything I do streaming is going to go to them, so I’m just really proud of it. I used footage from the South Korea dog meat trade, but I didn’t want to go too crazy, because I wanted it to be safe and friendly for anyone to watch it. I’m just finding subtle ways to kind of get the message out there that we have to try to stop this thing.”

E.G. noted she’s always been “super empathetic” towards animals. “I’m a mom, so that makes it doubly more intense for me,” she told HollywoodLife. “The mother part of me just wants to take care of them. We’ve always had animals, but I’ve been doing a lot of fostering. As I got older, I just started finding myself wanting to fight for them. I’m so grateful to be the voice of Tommy Pickles and all these characters, but to me, the greatest place I could use my voice is to be the voice for them and to speak out.”

Back in Aug. 2020, a live-action reboot of the popular Cartoon Network series The Powerpuff Girls was announced by The CW. When HollywoodLife spoke with E.G., they had to get her thoughts on this next chapter. “I think Powerpuff Girls is a cult classic cartoon, and it was such a blast to do that show,” E.G. told HollywoodLife. “So to me, it’s just an extension of more of something great that people love. They absolutely 100% have my blessing for the live-action series. They’re superheroes fighting to keep the world’s good place. What a great message.”

London - Nickelodeon is inviting viewers into the Group Chat with the brand-new virtually produced entertainment series, premiering Monday 30th November 2020 at 5:00pm on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland! The series is a video chat rundown of the week’s latest hot topics, taken directly from what kids love and are talking about across social media.

Group Chat (15 episodes) is a new pop culture talk show. Each episode will also feature fan-favorite stars, as they talk about the hottest trend topics of the week based on what kids are currently discussing across social media, play games and compete in challenges--all via video chat.

The series is divided into two: Part one is hosted by Jules LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels, co-stars of Nickelodeon’s Side Hustle, with special appearances by Hayley LeBlanc (Mani). Part two is hosted by social media star Brent Rivera and Jayden Bartels.
