Pete Wentz Talks Bringing A Little Edge to Nickelodeon's "School of Rock"

Because the world could use a little more Dewey Finn!

Nickelodeon USA will start to premiere and show the networks brand new musical comedy series School of Rock, based on the hit 2003 movie of the same name, on Saturday 12th March 2016 at 9:30pm ET/PT. The show is amplified with a cast cover song in each episode and a story arc featuring Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz!

Although Jack Black isn't in the lineup - Tony Cavalero of LA improv troupe The Groundlings plays wanna-be rocker/substitute teacher Dewey - the show has the blessing of the team behind the original movie. The film's director Richard Linklater and producer Scott Rudin are among the exec producers, and Mike White adapted his original screenplay for the small screen.

And it's got some rock'n'roll cred via Wentz, who plays a pal of Dewey's from his band days in two episodes!

"I've never really done stuff with younger actors before and the energy level is off the charts," he tells Billboard. "It's like hanging out with little espresso shots."

Wentz's character is a hardcore rocker, but with a touch of innuendo. "He thinks it's silly that Dewey is now playing with these kids in a band, but you can tell he's a little bit jealous. He offers a view into what Dewey's life used to be like, and there's a character arc where he changes a little as it goes on."

Nickelodeon isn't the first outfit to reinvent the hit movie. An Andrew Lloyd Webber-penned musical opened on Broadway in December 2015.

With the all-new weekly series, the network is hoping to connect with young fans and maybe draw in their parents too, with the cast covering a mix of classic rock tunes and current pop hits. The season's set list ranges from the Romantics' What I Like About You to Meghan Trainor's Lips Are Moving, from Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take It to Walk the Moon's Shut Up and Dance.

Wentz says he was drawn to the project because he's a fan of the film, "and it's always fun to do something my kids can watch, too."

Turns out he's a bit of a movie buff, too, with "almost anything that came out in the '80s, especially John Hughes" topping his list. Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, he attended New Trier High School, the setting for Hughes' 1985 screen gem The Breakfast Club and says, "The neighborhood I grew up in is exactly like the neighborhood in Home Alone."

Wentz, who's done some television including as a host on Oxygen's Best Ink, is jazzed about exploring more roles in front of, and behind, the camera. His production company Bartskull Films is shopping a pilot he wrote and stars in. "It's kind of like a fish out of water, Curb Your Enthusiasm-type look at the idea that you're in a rock band and also a dad in the suburbs." Sound like anyone he knows? Although the show is scripted, "it's hyper-reality, like the way Larry David does an impersonation of himself in Curb," Wentz says.

Of course, Wentz is keeping plenty busy with Fall Out Boy, who have been nominated for "Favorite Music Group" in Nickelodeon's 2016 Kids' Choice Awards, and are currently touring their album American Beauty/American Psycho around US. And even with the band's continued success, this rocker doesn't like to exhale.

"It's still not a no-brainer. Our sound is not straight-ahead for pop radio. Every song we've put out, even Centuries, none of them are straight-ahead top 40 radio," he says. "We walk in and they're always like, 'This is a little weird for is.' Which is good. We've always been a little bit outsiders in pop culture and I think pop culture needs outsiders."

Nickelodeon Partners With Spark And Pearl Media For Kids' Choice Awards Shopping Center Campaign

Spark and experiential agency Pearl Media have teamed up with Nickelodeon to promote the 2016 Kids' Choice Awards by pranking children and then distributing videos of what happened virally across social media!

The concept is centered around Nickelodeon's famous "Do not touch" button which was placed at Los Angeles' Hollywood and Highland center. The button sat in front of an interactive screen, in which curious kids were encouraged to press the button by Blake Shelton, the host of Nickelodeon's 2016 Kids' Choice Awards, Nick Radio host DJ Maxwell and Nickelodeon Star Jace Norman from "Henry Danger".

Unsuspecting kids were surprised with Nickelodeon-themed experiences, such as pizza, meeting Jace, being slimed, and tickets to Nickelodeon's 2016 Kids' Choice Awards!

As part of the campaign, Nickelodeon is prominently featuring the video on the networks official Kids' Choice Awards website as well as on its YouTube channel and Facebook page. It will also be amplified programmatically with a special interactive video unit, says Spark.

"This funny Kids' Choice prank video is a testament to the joy and excitement that the Nickelodeon brand continues to bring to real kids," says Ned Berger, Consumer Marketing Manager, Nickelodeon.

This is Spark's first year developing a Kids' Choice Awards plan for Nickelodeon, and prior year activations had incorporated on-the-ground elements, such as an in-mall sliming event. "While that was fun for the few hundred kids who were able to participate on-site, it lacked the scale we were seeking for this year's Awards activation," says Deb Medsker, SVP/global director, Spark.

"Our goal this year was to give kids at home that feeling of living vicariously through the participants whose wildest dreams came true in the interactive video stunts."

The initial challenge was to create a seamless thread of an experience by taking everything kids love about the show and making them feel bigger. "From music and pizza to slime, we worked closely with Spark and Nickelodeon to devise supersized experiences," says Pearl Media's Zach Katterman.

Spark has served as Nickelodeon's media planning and buying agency since January 2015.

Hosted by country Music star Blake Shelton, Nickelodeon's 29th Annual Kids' Choice Awards ceremony, will be held at the "Fabulous" Forum in Inglewood, California on Saturday 12th March 2016 at 8pm (ET/PT), and will broadcast live on Nickelodeon USA & Nickelodeon Canada at 8pm (ET/PT) and Nickelodeon Australia & New Zealand on Sunday 13th March 2016 at 11am AU/1pm NZ, then rolling out in more than 180 countries and territories within hours of the live show, including Sunday 13th March 2016 from 5:00pm on Nickelodeon UK and Ireland/HD!

How New Movies Have Ignited A Fresh Passion For Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Toys

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back on the big screen this year in the blockbuster sequel, Out of the Shadows, and to celebrate, Toy News' Billy Langsworthy recently found out how the TMNT toy line performed off the back of the first movie, and what's in store for the pizza loving reptiles this year in the form of Flair's expansive new range of products!:
Having started life as a black and white comic book back in 1984, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have since gone on to establish themselves as toy royalty, with accompanying animated shows, live action movies and even a record deal to boot.

The crime-fighting pizza-loving heroes enjoyed life on the big screen back in the early Nineties via three movies blending the talents of New Line Cinema, Jim Henson's Creature Shop and Golden Harvest, a production company responsible for the Hong Kong martial arts movies of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.

A fully animated TMNT film made it into cinemas in 2007 under Warner Bros but Nickelodeon struck box office gold when it brought the brand to life in the 2014 big screen reboot.

The movie, produced by Hollywood action supremo Michael Bay, made $493.3 million on a $125 million budget and Nickelodeon credits the movie with igniting "a fresh passion and interest in the Turtles."

"For consumers, this was the first time under Nickelodeon's ownership that the Turtles had been seen in a different creative style, far removed from the animation series they were used to seeing," Marianne James, vice president, consumer products UK and Ireland and European retail sales and marketing at Nickelodeon Viacom Consumer Products, tells ToyNews.

"It was this new creative style that gave the movie toy range a point of difference at retail; consumers were not doubling up on existing toys they had purchased. The range also attracted the adult movie super fans.

"Overall, the first movie helped to ignite a fresh passion and interest in the Turtles franchise with adults reminiscing over the original Eighties series, kids engaging with the movie alongside the animation series or discovering the Turtles for the very first time."

Unsurprisingly, a sequel was greenlit soon after the first film sent cinema tills ringing and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is set to hit UK cinemas on June 3rd.

The new line from master toy partner Flair is looking to once again provide a point of difference for fans of the brand, with new products spanning figures, play-sets, vehicles and role-play items.

And with some fan favourite characters returning for the first time under Nickelodeon's stewardship of the movie franchise, the firm is feeling confident once again when it comes to the Turtles' prospects in the toy space this year.

"The producers of the upcoming sequel have carefully managed to differentiate the film from its predecessor," adds James.

"This translates into the toy range where you will see that the Turtles action figures have an updated look with new outfits giving them a key point of difference. The play-sets draw upon new scenes directly lifted from the movie, including the Turtles revamped Sewer Lair that fans will have seen from the trailer. Plus, in order for the Turtles to remain incognito whilst fighting crime, they have a new garbage truck vehicle that will be a key toy within the range.

"Excitement really comes from the translation of villains Bebop and Rocksteady into figures. With an unprecedented amount of detail, these figures are proving to be the stand out feature from the range. The figurines are meticulous in detail, and capture the appeal of these characters in terms of appearance and stature. With their appeal stretching from new fans all the way up to adult fans of the original Eighties series, they are set to cause mayhem at retail.

"Of course, a new product line wouldn't be complete without a few secrets; as part of the film, a brand new location has just been revealed in the recent teaser trailer – Kraang's metallic mobile fortress, the Technodrome. Currently this element of the toy range has been kept under wraps, so we look forward to sharing it with you very soon."

With the return of Bebop and Rocksteady set to ensure an adult demographic feels the pull of nostalgia in the toy aisles, Nickelodeon is using an Eighties-inspired creative guide to develop an entire line of consumer products designed to appeal directly to fans of the original franchise and specifically to adults.

"Within the past year, we launched a number of key products that demonstrate this; from professional sportswear tops to life like 3D model figures," continues James.

"We have also continued to develop our apparel ranges, most notably the new partnership with Forbidden Planet with a whole collection of classic Eighties style accessories and clothing. We have also started to explore the nostalgic side to the brand and created a range of infant clothing using the Eighties look. This launch has been a resounding success.

"Appealing to fans of all ages is part of our overall strategy and also new for 2016 is the recently announced collaboration with Dr. Martens. Together we have designed a collection of classic Dr. Marten boots with a very special and unique Turtles twist. With more collaborations like this due to be announced, the 2016 product offering will most certainly continue to appease the franchise's original fans."

With a line of fan favourite characters (and vehicles) getting the toy treatment off the back of the new movie, and the very real potential for further adventures on the big screen, Nickelodeon's generation-spanning toy antics with the Turtles looks set to reach new heights this year. Cowabunga indeed.

"Lori, Jill and I want to thank YTV and Nickelodeon for their amazing support," added Shelley Scarrow, Executive Producer and Showrunner.

Ride will be shot in Canada and Ireland.

Nickelodeon first announced Ride at the networks recent Nickelodeon Upfront 2016 presentation. The series is slated to debut during Nickelodeon USA's 2016/2017 programming season.

Breakthrough previously produced Max & Shred for Nick and YTV, and has created shows such as Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables for the latter.
