Woodbury Animation Grad Shares Her Journey to Joining the Production Team at Nickelodeon

Drawn to ‘all things animation’ as a kid, Lindsey Uslan, Woodbury University Animation alumna (’19), paved a path to making her dream a reality. Currently serving as a production coordinator at Nickelodeon working on the series, Butterbean’s Café, Lindsey graciously took the time to share her career trajectory for other aspiring animators with Woodbury University.

How did you first get interested in animation?
There were a couple of different things that led me to animation. Most notably, it was when I watched the first How to Train Your Dragon movie. The story in general just really blew me away. As a kid watching it, I felt like animation was really calling me, and all I could think after watching the film was how great it would be to help create something like that.

How did you happen to select Woodbury?
When I was a senior in high school, I wasn’t aware of the colleges that offered Animation programs. I happened to attend a college fair, where I spoke to a couple of representatives from Woodbury. They talked about how much they loved the campus and what the Animation program had to offer. After more research, I decided Woodbury was the right fit and the program would allow me to learn the basics to grow and really understand what Animation was all about. I also really liked that Woodbury required having an internship in order to graduate and that its location in Burbank, surrounded by studios, would really help secure one.

What is your favorite part about animation?
There are a lot of amazing things about animation, but what speaks the most to me is the storytelling aspect. Storyboard artists are such a great part of the development process. They are able to take the scripts and transform written words into creative, imaginary visual worlds.

Tell us about your senior thesis and what it meant to you? Specifically, what inspired you to address the subject matter of ‘life and death.’
My senior thesis was based on a short story I pitched to a friend my junior year. Originally it was just going to be part of my portfolio, but after getting great feedback, I thought it would be fun to turn it into a film. I created a world that used music rather than words to tell the story of two characters with contrasting personalities. They engage in a fight, but in the end, realize one needs the other to exist.

Did you have any internships while at Woodbury? If so, what were your responsibilities?
I had an internship during my last semester of my senior year. It was at a small studio called Splash Entertainment, where I worked on a 3D movie. I had a lot of responsibilities because it was a smaller studio and really got the chance to try different things, such as reading the script and creating asset breakdowns, attending storyboard and post reviews, creating texture templates, and learning new software programs, such as Blender Animation. I even have the opportunity to create a couple of storyboard revisions for a sequence, which was really fun and exciting.

What were your responsibilities as President of the Woodbury University Animation Club; What is the purpose of the Club?
The purpose of the Animation Club was to connect students with studio professionals and create fun events on campus that supported professional growth. Some responsibilities included leading animation meetings, attending student government meetings, creating events, and emailing and connecting students to industry professionals.

How did your job at Nickelodeon Studios come about? What is your role/responsibilities?
I landed this role after working my way through a few positions at Nickelodeon. Right after graduation, I started as an intern in special events, which led to a position on the recruitment team. Shortly after, I was hired on my first production, and only after spending six months with this team, I was promoted to my current role as production coordinator. It has been a crazy journey in such a short amount of time, but each job has taught me so much and allowed me to meet a bunch of incredible people at the studio.

As for my responsibilities as a production coordinator, there are a lot of different roles that come into play. When you are on the production side of a show you really get to be involved in all aspects because you are in charge of helping the show get through the Animation pipeline.

Right now, the show is in the animation and post stages so my job requires a lot of organization. On any given day I might manage due dates and track shipments that come in from our overseas studio; send those shipments to our leads (the people in charge of animation and compositing -which is post-production), enter notes from our leads into various programs, such as Shotgun or Portal, and update tracks sheets to ensure we are on schedule for each step of production. I am also in charge of a production assistant who helps me with all of the steps along the way.

Who, if anyone, at Woodbury served as a mentor?
I am not sure if I had a mentor per se, but I did have a lot of great professors who helped me in different ways. For example, I took a painting class in my sophomore year that really helped me grow in terms of understanding not only Photoshop as a program but light and how it affects everything we are looking at.

Is there anyone in animation whose work you particularly admire?
There are a couple of storyboard artists I really look up to for their style as well as their creative use of camera shots such as Madeline Sharafian, Dana Terrace, Dean Kelly, and Kevin Ortiz.

Are there any animated films that stand out to you, based on the animator’s work?
As I mentioned earlier, I really love How to Train Your Dragon. It’s what launched this incredible journey, and I think the story, characters, and music are really well done. It’s such a good coming of age movie with a well-balanced mix of action and humor.

What are your short-term and longer-term career objectives?
My long term goal is to become a storyboard artist. I really love the aspect of telling a story through drawings, as well as being involved in the initial creative process of developing the episode/arc. As a short-term goal, I would love to work on another show before making the transition to the artist side, since the one I’m on now is my first production. Every show is run differently, and you can learn so much from each production. You really get the opportunity to learn all the different aspects of animation because you are involved in everything. So, it’s very beneficial.

What advice would you give current/future animation students?
Work hard, never give up, and if an opportunity comes around and it isn’t exactly what you want, don’t just say no, because you will never know where it might lead. I started as an intern for special events at Nickelodeon and now I am a production coordinator. Every opportunity is a new door that leads to another, so take what you can get and work hard for what you want.

Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand to Premiere 'Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan' on Monday 31st August 2020

Update (11/8) - Official Nickelodeon Australia media release:

11-Year-Old Rapper Lands His Own Nickelodeon TV Series Created By Tyler Perry

Kid rapper and pint-sized powerhouse Dylan Gilmer is set to star in his very own live-action series, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, premiering Monday, 31 August, at 5:30pm on Nickelodeon (Foxtel #701 and Fetch #252).

Executive produced, directed and written by Tyler Perry, the series follows a family whose world is turned upside down when their nephew, Young Dylan (Dylan Gilmer), an aspiring hip-hop star, moves in unannounced.

Dylan’s grandmother Viola (Aloma Wright) realises that raising her grandson is too much to take on, so she decides to send him to live indefinitely with her affluent son Myles Wilson (Carl Anthony Payne II), his wife Yasmine (Mieko Hillman) and their two kids Rebecca (Celina Smith) and Charlie (Hero Hunter).

Suddenly, the Wilson family household needs to adapt as lifestyles clash between rising hip-hop star Young Dylan and his straight-laced cousins.

From Dylan giving Rebecca and Charlie lessons in “swag” and street smarts, to learning that even rappers have rules in the Wilson house, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan follows the hilarious hijinks this family faces as they try to get on the same beat.

Star of the series, 11-year-old Dylan Gilmer, was handpicked by Perry himself after he saw the young rapper’s performance on Nickelodeon’s new series All That, which Gilmer’s friend and avid supporter, Ellen DeGeneres, helped him secure, following countless performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Perry surprised Gilmer with news about the exciting new role during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show alongside DeGeneres, his self-proclaimed ‘biggest fan’.

Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan premieres Mondays to Thursdays at 5.30pm from Monday, 31 August, to Thursday, 17 September, on Nickelodeon (Foxtel #701 and Fetch #252) and is also available to stream on Foxtel On Demand, or the Nick Play App.

Brand-new Live-action Series

Kid rapper and pint-sized powerhouse Young Dylan will join the Nickelodeon family with the brand-new live-action series, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, premiering Monday 31st August 2020 on Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand. Fans can watch the first episode before its TV premiere on the award-winning Nick Play app.

Executive produced, directed and written by Perry, the series follows a family whose world is turned upside down when their nephew, Young Dylan (Dylan Gilmer), an aspiring hip-hop star, moves in unannounced. Michelle Sneed is also an executive producer, with Will Areu and Mark E. Swinton serving as producers. The series wrapped its first season on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Ga.

In Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, Dylan’s grandmother Viola (Aloma Wright) realizes that raising her grandson is too much to take on, so she decides to send him to live indefinitely with her affluent son Myles Wilson (Carl Anthony Payne II), his wife Yasmine (Mieko Hillman) and their two kids Rebecca (Celina Smith) and Charlie (Hero Hunter). Suddenly, the Wilson family household needs to adapt as lifestyles clash between rising hip-hop star Young Dylan and his straight-laced cousins. From Dylan giving Charlie, Rebecca, and her best friend Bethany (Jet Miller), lessons in “swag” and street smarts, to learning that even rappers have rules in the Wilson house, the series follows the hilarious hijinks this family faces as they try to get on the same beat.

In the series premiere of Young Dylan, "Imaginary Friends", Young Dylan arrives at his relatives’ home needing a place to live, but his streetwise swagger upends the conservative Wilson household. (#101)

Nickelodeon’s partnership with Perry is part of his long-term pact with ViacomCBS, producing original series for BET Networks (The Oval and Sistas) and other ViacomCBS networks, with exclusive licensing rights on this programming. Additionally, Perry recently announced his joint venture with BET Networks for the new streaming video on demand service BET+. Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan marks Perry’s first kids’ scripted series.

Born and raised in Annapolis, Md., Gilmer is known for his many appearances and performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and at NBA All-Star Weekend. Gilmer has an overall talent deal with Telepictures, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Television, and has previously guest starred on the revival of Nickelodeon’s hit series All That.

Gilmer is represented by Sherry Kayne of The Green Room and Chris Abramson at Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

The production of Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Brian Banks serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan underscores a key element of Nickelodeon's content strategy, to mine social platforms for the talent that kids love. Nick's new content slate is informed by the network's ongoing research and insights into today's generation of kids, who: are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

Fans can visit nick.co.uk/dylan to find out more about Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, as well as watch videos and play games. Fans can also like the official Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand Facebook page and follow Nickelodeon on Twitter and Instagram for the latest Nick news, highlights and videos.

Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan made its world debut on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

How ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Became One of the Summer’s Most Popular Shows - 15 Years After Its Original Debut

How ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ became one of the summer’s most popular shows — 15 years after its debut

In “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the 12-year-old Aang is charged with preserving peace among rival nations. (Nickelodeon)

Sarah Rohani Drepaul, a 22-year-old in Queens, graduated from college in the spring and found herself stuck back home. She wanted to watch a TV show that would be a balm for the pandemic summer without wholly disconnecting her from current events. So she turned to Avatar: The Last Airbender, an animated series which aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008 and relaunched on Netflix in May.

“I remember specifically starting it because there was talk about it, but also I needed something that is lighter,” Drepaul told The Washington Post.

While seeing the spiraling news about the novel coronavirus and the protests for racial justice, she found that watching Avatar became a way to digest those events. The show “didn’t feel like escapism,” she says — but in a good way. “It felt like a lens that I could better understand my society.”

For months, Avatar has consistently appeared in Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows, the company says. Forums dedicated to the show have been active since its initial run, and since the spring, fans new and old have taken to social media platforms such as TikTok, Reddit and Twitter to discuss their favorite characters and moments. But its immense popularity isn’t just the result of a wave of nostalgia. Fans say its reflection in current events has been a grounding force in a tumultuous time.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a fictional world of four nations: fire, water, earth and air. Certain people in each nation have the ability to manipulate the elements, a skill called bending. The title character is 12-year-old Aang, the sole surviving airbender after a Fire Nation-led genocide. He’s also the latest reincarnation of the “Avatar” — a person with the ability to bend all four elements and the responsibility to keep the nations balanced to preserve peace. Aang finds a way to restore that balance, all the while the show tackles themes of war, teamwork, collective trauma and corrupt governments.

Tanvi Yenna, 24, a new fan from Ottumwa, Iowa, was struck by episodes set in Ba Sing Se, a city in the earth kingdom with strict wealth-based social stratification, and where officials deny that the 100-year war against the fire nation is still taking place.

“There’s very visceral connections to people being in denial of very concrete realities. Things like police brutality and racism, but also the global pandemic,” she says. “Even just the fear of talking about the war in Ba Sing Se reminded me of being gaslighted when you do wear a mask around” by people who don’t believe masks help the spread of the COVID-19 (coronavirus), despite evidence to the contrary.

Another parallel to today's world is the megalomaniacal imperialism of the Fire Nation subjugating anyone they encounter being eminently recognizable in violent and corrupt police arresting, assaulting and murdering people for the crime of suggesting that they shouldn’t be routinely arrested, assaulted and murdered.

The series is also notable for its wide ensemble of characters being deliberately absent of white people to reflect the melting pot of Asian and Pacific cultures that inspired it, which counters the perceived wisdom that white people can only relate to other white people and any attempt at representation is doomed to failure, the diversity instead better reflecting the world in which we live.

“In some ways, I’m surprised by how relevant the show still is to people, but in other ways, not at all,” one of the creators, Michael Dante DiMartino, told The Washington Post via email. “The major issues in the stories — genocide, totalitarianism, systemic injustice, abuse — sadly, these have been pervasive issues throughout history and continue to be. The show is a reflection of our world. But now, we happen to be living through a time in which all these problems have been exacerbated.”

Some fans are even making protest posters featuring a former Avatar, formidable earthbender Kyoshi, and her haunting advice to Aang at the end of the show: “Only justice can bring peace.”

That’s Jade Tyra’s favorite line. The 17-year-old from Hilo, Hawaii, is a new fan who graduated from high school in the spring — only to find her plans derailed by the coronavirus — and has watched the whole series three times since May. Tyra is involved in community activism efforts, and the show has been a great way for her to explain big issues to her younger siblings.

“This show has a really incredible perspective on the way that we do justice because it frames it in this easy-to-manage and easy-to-comprehend format, which is a children’s cartoon,” she says.

Co-creator Bryan Konietzko figured that the rerelease of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix would resonate during the lockdown for that reason.

“The feedback we’ve gotten from parents over these many years is that this is a show they cannot only watch as a family, but also one that presents a solid set of ethics in an engaging way and helps them introduce difficult topics to their children,” he told The Washington Post via email.

He adds, “The spirit of the show has always attracted a core group of fans who are compassionate toward their fellow humans and passionate about social issues.”

Some fans are especially taken with a story line featuring Prince Zuko, who has been exiled from fire nation and tries to regain his honor by capturing the Avatar, but instead joins him in fighting his native land.

Sydney Rae Chin, 23, an intuitive sex educator in Philadelphia and longtime fan, says that Zuko’s arc is a model for mental health. Viewers watch Zuko process his traumas — the emotional and physical abuse from his father and subsequent banishment — while he transforms from enemy to ally. “Looking at someone who has been harmed and is doing that inner work . . . it’s nice to have a media representation of that.”

Priya Dadlani — who co-created a collective for activism, art and publishing led by women of color and queer/trans people of color — watched the show for the first time in May and says Zuko’s defection to Team Avatar reminds her about community accountability.

“You’re seeing someone unlearn their history, sacrifice privilege, family and social standing to stand up for what’s right,” says the 25-year-old from Brooklyn. “I feel like that whole process is happening now.”

“I’m in awe and gratitude to all those courageous people out in the streets, making calls, speaking truth to power, and working to make this world a more just place,” says DiMartino, the co-creator, of the activism over the past couple months. “And if ATLA had a tiny amount to do with that, I am humbled to say the least.”

Since ending its original run in 2018, the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been translated into a successful ongoing graphic novel series, which includes 25 volumes and counting, continuing the story of the Avatar. A combination of the titles has spent 70 cumulative weeks on the New York Times Graphic Books Bestseller list since 2012. The DVD and Blu-rays are a successful consumer products business, with the Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Series generating nearly $5MM since its 2018 release. Additional consumer products include toys and video games.

Its success led to the creation of a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, that returned to the world of Avatar years after Aang's death to follow Korra, his successor as Avatar. That series ran between 2012-2014. In 2010, the series got its first feature-length film, the live-action The Last Airbender. The Legend of Korra will be adding The Legend of Korra to its programming library on August 14.

Netflix is currently in the midst of producing a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender with original show creators, DiMartino and Konietzko.

The news comes as Avatar: The Last Airbender, currently celebrating its 15th anniversary, is seeing significant success on Netflix. Re-added to the streamer's programming library in mid-May, it quickly became the most watched title on service, and has since smashed the record for being on Netflix’s daily Top 10 lists the most amount of times in a row. Avatar: The Last Airbender follows the journey of Aang, a 12-year-old boy torn between fulfilling his fate as the long-awaited Avatar, who can master all four elements - Earth, Water, Fire, and Air - and bring balance to the world, and just wanting to be a regular kid.

Launched in February 2005, Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender ran for 61 episodes over three seasons (or "Books") and emerged as one of the most beloved animated properties in history, drawing 5.6 million viewers during its series finale. Created and executive produced by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the series is translated in 32 languages.

The property has translated into a successful ongoing graphic novel series, which includes 25 volumes and counting, continuing the story of the Avatar. Its success led to the creation of a follow-up series, The Legend of Korra, that returned to the world of Avatar years after Aang’s death to follow Korra, his successor as Avatar. That series ran between 2012-2014. In 2010, the series got its first feature-length film, the live-action The Last Airbender.

Netflix is currently in the midst of producing a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender with original show creators, DiMartino and Konietzko.
