Der neue Streaming-Dienst Paramount+ ist ab heute mit vielen tausenden Stunden Filmen, Serien und Shows in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz verfĂŒgbar. Zum Start lud Paramount nationale und internationale Stars und GĂ€ste zum blauen Teppich im Berliner UCI Luxe: Neben Marc Rissmann (1883) und Anson Mount (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Dani Levy, Bettina Stucky, Sylvester Groth (Der Scheich), Hanna Hilsdorf (A Thin Line), Harry Treadaway, Jeanne Goursaud, Hardy KrĂŒger Jr. (Chemie des Todes) und den Casts von Spotlight und Germany Shore feierten unter anderem auch Enissa Amani und Rick Kavanian den Launch von Paramount+.

Was unterscheidet Paramount+ von den anderen Streamern, Herr Nobili?

Mit Paramount+ ist der nĂ€chste Streamingdienst in Deutschland gestartet. Was soll ihn erfolgreicher machen als die Konkurrenz? DWDL traf Marco Nobili, Head of Paramount+ International, beim Launch-Event in Berlin zum GesprĂ€ch ĂŒber Positionierung und globale Expansion.

Herr Nobili, hĂ€tten Sie einen Tipp fĂŒr mich? Welchen Streamimgservice soll ich Ihrer Meinung nach kĂŒndigen, um Budget fĂŒr Paramount+ zu haben?

(lacht) Die Entscheidung muss ich Ihnen ĂŒberlassen. Paramount+ hat etwas fĂŒr alle, daher sehen wir im deutschen Markt Potential fĂŒr beide Szenarien, also als Ersatz fĂŒr andere oder in ErgĂ€nzung und eine Marktforschung in Deutschland hat uns gezeigt, dass 60 Prozent der Deutschen offen dafĂŒr sind, einen neuen Streamingservice auszuprobieren. Die wollen wir mit der Bandbreite und QualitĂ€t der Inhalte ĂŒberzeugen und das zu einem sehr wettbewerbsfĂ€higen Preis. Im Schnitt hat ein Haushalt dreieinhalb bis vier Streamingdienste abonniert, einer davon wollen wir sein.

Eine Vielzahl von Wettbewerbern sind schon aktiv. Mit welcher Positionierung wollen Sie sich denn davon unterscheiden?

In Anlehnung an unser Logo haben wir es ja auch zur Marketingkampagne gemacht: Wir haben einen ganzen Berg an Entertainment, wobei ich die Breite und Tiefe des Angebots hervorheben wĂŒrde. Escape & Connect nennen wir es. Mit vielen außergewöhnlichen Serien wie „Star Trek“, aber auch Animationsprogrammen wie „South Park“ und Kinderprogrammen von Nickelodeon bietet Paramount+ eine Flucht aus dem Alltag, mit Reality-Programmen wie „Germany Shore“, Musik und manchen besonders nahbaren fiktionalen Stoffen aber auch echte Verbindungen. Ob ein Wiedersehen mit vertrauten Menschen oder Abenteuer in fremden Welten - wir haben was fĂŒr jeden.

Das erzÀhlt jeder. Was macht Paramount+ einzigartig? Was ist ihr Wettbewerbsvorteil?

Was uns von vielen Wettbewerbern im Streaming unterscheidet, ist die Erfahrung im Markt. Und das betrifft mehrere Aspekte. Einmal hat Paramount eine sehr lange Historie in der Unterhaltungindustrie, damit verbunden viel Erfahrung im Markt und starke Marken wie Showtime, CBS, MTV oder Nickelodeon, die ĂŒbrigens immer schon eine Vielzahl von Genres bedient haben und wir erleben gerade, wie die Erwartung an Genre-Vielfalt bei Streamingdiensten steigt. Außerdem ist Paramount schon seit Jahrzehnten global aktiv. Wenn wir in Deutschland starten, sind wir nicht neu hier. Das lokale Team kennt den deutschen Markt und den Geschmack, betreibt unsere linearen Sender und hat auch unseren kostenlosen Streamingdienst Pluto TV gelauncht. Damit haben wir ein Ökosystem aus SVoD, TV-Sendern und AVoD, das uns Promotion aber auch Windowing, also die Programmverwertung, ĂŒber mehrere Verbreitungswege ermöglicht. Das kann nicht jeder.

Wie gradlinig lÀsst sich Paramount+ als Hollywood-Versprechen global expandieren oder braucht es unterschiedliche AnsÀtze?

Die Antwort liegt dazwischen. Unsere großen Franchises und Hollywood-Stars wie Sylvester Stallone, der mit „Tulsa King“ seine erste TV-Serie spielt, entwickeln ĂŒberall eine Strahlkraft. Technische Aspekte gehören natĂŒrlich auch zu dem, was sich leicht skalieren lĂ€sst. Gleichzeitig wissen wir aber, dass jeder Markt seine Besonderheiten hat, was sich zum Beispiel bei der Distribution auswirkt, aber auch der Bedeutung von lokalem Content. Mit Dani Levys „Der Scheich“, unserer Reality „Germany Shore“, der neuen Staffel des Nickelodeon-Erfolgs „Spotlight“ und Anfang Januar dann „Simon Becketts: Die Chemie des Todes“ haben wir vom Start weg in den ersten Wochen bereits ein starkes lokales Angebot fĂŒrs deutsche Publikum. Das ist hier und in  europĂ€ischen MĂ€rkten wie Frankreich und Italien sehr wichtig, ein Markt in dem der internationale Content eine grĂ¶ĂŸere Rolle spielt, wĂ€re beispielsweise Kanada.  

Paramount betont immer wieder, eine der grĂ¶ĂŸten Hollywood-Marken zu sein. Wie knifflig ist es, diesem Image mit lokalen Eigenproduktionen mit deutlich weniger Budget gerecht zu werden?

Da hilft uns die Kenntnis aus der langjĂ€hrigen Paramount-PrĂ€senz in vielen MĂ€rkten, weil wir wissen, welche Erwartungen es an lokale Produktionen gibt. Ich schlage vor Sie schauen sich „Simon Becketts: Die Chemie des Todes“ an und werden ein enorm hohes Production Value sehen. Es braucht nicht immer Investments auf Hollywood-Level.

Eine Frage mit Blick auf die Produzenten und Kreativen in Deutschland: Bedeutet eine Zusammenarbeit mit Paramount+ automatisch einen Total Buyout?

Wir sind offen fĂŒr viele Modelle, haben zum Beispiel in Italien auch schon Koproduktionen umgesetzt. NatĂŒrlich gefĂ€llt uns die Möglichkeit, eine herausragende Produktion international verwerten und damit Paramount+ stĂ€rken zu können. Aber wenn wir in fĂŒr uns wichtigen MĂ€rkten Zugang zu tollen Produktionen bekommen, die sich nicht international auswerten lassen, wĂ€re das kein Hinderungsgrund fĂŒr uns.

Andere Streamingdienste kĂŒrzen oder fokussieren ihre Investitionen in lokalen Content, Sie expandieren unbeirrt?

Ich kann mich nicht zu der Strategie der anderen Ă€ußern, aber wir sind sehr ĂŒberzeugt und unbeirrt darin, bis 2025 unser Ziel von 150 internationalen Produktionen umzusetzen. Diese Ambition begleitet unsere weitere globale Expansion. In diesem Jahr haben wir Paramount+ in 27 neuen MĂ€rkte gestartet, sind jetzt u.a. in Lateinamerika, Europa, Australien und Kanada gut vertreten. Im nĂ€chsten Jahr kommt u.a. Indien dazu und wir schauen uns Afrika, den Nahen Osten und Asien weiterhin genau an.

Sie sprachen bereits von Distribution. Sie starten in Deutschland in Partnerschaft mit Sky, haben so direkt eine hohe Verbreitung. Welches Ziel haben Sie sich fĂŒrs nĂ€chste Jahr gesetzt?

Ich wĂŒrde lĂŒgen, wenn ich sage, dass wir keine klaren Ziele definiert haben. Aber wir sprechen nur ĂŒber unser globales Ziel und da wollen wir Ende 2024 bei international 100 Millionen Abos liegen. Wir haben gerade veröffentlicht, dass wir im letzten Quartal 4,6 Millionen Abos dazu gewonnen haben und derzeit bei 67 Millionen Paramount+-Abos liegen. Im Vergleich zum Wachstum des Marktes ist das ein erstaunliches Plus. Deutschland ist fĂŒr uns einer der Top 5-MĂ€rkte auf der Welt und soll natĂŒrlich seinen Anteil dazu beitragen unser Ziel bis Ende 2024 zu erreichen.

Einerseits expandiert Paramount+, gleichzeitig startet in einigen europÀischen MÀrkten hingegen Sky Showtime als Premium-Angebot. Welche Strategie steckt hinter dieser Zweigleisigkeit?

Der globale Streamingmarkt wird sich bis 2027 in der GrĂ¶ĂŸe fast verdoppeln und wir wollen in jeder Form davon profitieren. Deswegen gibt es Paramount+ als SVoD-Angebot, aber auch die FAST-Channels von Pluto TV. Damit können wir sowohl mit Abos als auch Werbung verdienen und bauen dafĂŒr unseren globalen Fußabdruck aus. In einigen Territorien wiederum macht es strategisch Sinn, sich mit Partnern zusammenzuschließen um ein finanziell attraktives Modell zu finden. Aus dem Gedanken ist Sky Showtime entstanden. FĂŒr Paramount+ ist es in hier die Partnerschaft mit Sky Deutschland oder nehmen Sie SĂŒdkorea, wo Paramount+ ein Teil des Streamingservices TVING geworden ist.

Letzte Frage: Bleibt Streaming mit dem Bingewatching verbunden oder wird sich ein zuletzt immer hÀufiger ausprobierte Weekly Release durchsetzen?

Ja, mit Binge-Watching fing mal alles an und das Versprechen von diesem neuen Ding namens Streaming war, dass man so viel gucken kann wie man möchte. Was dann in den letzten Jahren folgte war ein Lernprozess und ein Experimentieren. Und ich glaube das werden wir in der Branche auch weiterhin erleben. Das hĂ€ngt auch vom Genre ab. Entscheidend ist die Frage: Wie generiert man den grĂ¶ĂŸten Buzz um aufzufallen?

Todd Brian Dies: 'Star Falls,' 'Ride' Production Exec Most Recently Overseeing Animation Development For Canadian Media Company WildBrain Was 59

Todd Brian, a longtime production and development executive known for his work on a wide array of children’s programming — including Nickelodeon's Star Falls and Ride as well as HBO Max’s Daytime Emmy-nominated animated series Esme & Roy — died December 28 in Toronto on “after a very brief but brave battle with ALS,” according to his family. He was 59.

The veteran of the Canadian entertainment industry, most recently serving as Director of Development, Animation, at WildBrain, is remembered by his family as “a very charismatic soul who would light up a room with his energy and humour.”

“Todd was not just my colleague but one of my dearest friends, we shared so much through our 17-year friendship,” remarked WildBrain’s Chief Content Officer, Stephanie Betts. “He made everyone he met feel appreciated and seen. I’ll miss seeing his bright smile and hearing his playful laugh every day.”

Born on December 3, 1963, Brian was a graduate of institutions including Ryerson University and the Canadian Film Centre who worked over the course of his career in both the animation and live-action spaces, holding roles before WildBrain as a production executive at Corus Kids and as a development executive at marblemedia. He also served as a senior writer for CBC Television, a story editor and writer for eOne TV, and a development coordinator for Barna-Alper Productions.

In addition to Esme & Roy, Brian’s production exec credits include the live-action Nickelodeon series Star Falls and Ride, and multiple TV movies based on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novel Anne of Green Gables for PBS, among others.

The multihyphenate’s credits as a writer included such series as Caillou, Captain Flamingo, Jimmy Two-Shoes, Turbo Dogs and My Big Big Friend, to name a few.

Brian is survived by his mother Judy Jacobs and her husband Peter; his brother, Troy Brian; sister-in-law Susan; their children Chelsea, Megan and Brock; his sister, Tara Brian, and her son Gavin. The family requests that donations be sent to the ALS Society of Canada in lieu of flowers.

A memorial service will take place in Windsor, Ontario in February, but details were not announced.

MOOSE JAW, SK – Earlier this season the Moose Jaw Warriors and Western Hockey League announced a new charitable initiative driven by RE/MAX, partnering with Paramount Global, the parent company of global kids & family brand Nickelodeon. This partnership is in support of Children’s Miracle Network – RE/MAX Presents: Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network.

The Warriors are excited to host a SpongeBob SquarePants night at the Hangar on Saturday, Jan. 7 when the Seattle Thunderbirds visit downtown Moose Jaw.

Tigers to host RE/MAX Presents: Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network on January 7th


WHL Clubs will celebrate a Nickelodeon theme night, complete with special theme jerseys, branded creative, and in-game activations. Funds raised through RE/MAX Presents: Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network will go towards supporting local children’s hospitals in Western Canada.

The Medicine Hat Tigers will host the RE/MAX Presents: Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Co-op Place. The special theme will be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Game-worn jerseys from the RE/MAX Presents: Nickelodeon Night for Children’s Miracle Network will be auctioned off at www.32auctions.com starting on January 7th at 7 PM with proceeds in support of Children’s Miracle Network.

The Children’s Miracle Network strives to fund critical treatments and healthcare services, pediatric medical equipment, and research. Its various fundraising partners and programs support the mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.
