Screen Novelties Delivers Spooky Thrills and Chills for New "SpongeBob SquarePants" Halloween Special "The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom"

Stop-motion specialists Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh delve into the making of ‘SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom,’ airing on Nickelodeon USA on Friday, Oct. 13.

Nickelodeon recently tapped L.A.-based stop-motion animation specialists Screen Novelties to produce a half-hour stop-motion SpongeBob SquarePants Halloween special that will air on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:00pm ET/PT.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, directed by Screen Novelties co-founders Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh, is the second SpongeBob special for the company, after 2012’s SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! The company, which has previously worked on such stop-motion projects as Robot Chicken and Moral Orel for the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block, also created a stop-motion version of the iconic show open for its 10th anniversary, in 2010, backed by vocals by CeeLo Green:




Production of The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom used 27 sets that called for 15 boxes of breakfast cereal to create Bikini Bottom’s coral reefs, eight pounds of glitter to decorate SpongeBob’s pineapple house, and hundreds of popsicle sticks to make up the planks of a scary roller coaster track. Black lights were used to create a fluorescent glow across the puppets and sets.

Caballero explained to Animation World Network that they were very excited when they were approached by supervising producers Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller, “because we’ve been doing a lot of Christmas stuff and as much as we love Christmas, it’s nice to switch out the holidays. We were already coming up with gag ideas before even seeing the boards.”

Walsh added that thanks to the classic works of Rankin/Bass on holiday specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and The Year Without a Santa Claus, Christmas has become irrevocably linked to stop-motion animation. So it was a breath of fresh air to tackle a Halloween special. “They let you go crazier with the gags and the outrageousness when it’s a Halloween special,” he says. “We also love to interpret 2D, things that are already known in 2D and trying to bring them into the stop-motion realm in a pleasing kind of a way.”


Of course, one of the first challenges was starting from scratch with fabrication of the characters and environments. “Having done the Christmas special before, we had done a lot of R&D back then that we were able to use this time,” said Walsh. “Just the fact that you have to basically recreate Bikini Bottom in a three-dimensional way, inside a stage. It’s definitely a daunting thing when you’re just sitting there with the storyboards and you’re thinking, ‘Okay, we’ve got to make this work.’”

Walsh explained that the team at Screen Novelties tried to capture as much as possible in camera, without CG set extensions. “There’s even stuff that should be done digitally that we’re doing practically anyway,” he says.

“We’re practical nerds I guess,” adds Caballero.

Walsh said that that “inherent anarchy of the stop-motion process” gives them a creative freedom that makes it distinct from 2D or CG animation.

“There’s always these weird, unpredictable things that happen that you just have to go with,” he explains. “The stop motion is very controlled but because you’re using physical objects and because we have to do it at a pretty fast pace for TV, you’re making stuff and throwing it out there on the stage and going with it and it’s very much by the seat of our pants, but I think that gives it a lot of energy in a way that it feels very unlabored and kind of spontaneous in a way that sometimes animation isn’t.”

“I don’t know if the viewer will identify it while they’re watching, but there’s a sense that something was actually physically created and animated for that scene and those things exist somewhere in the world,” adds Caballero. “As Ray Harryhausen always said, it gives you an otherworldly sense that this is real, but it’s not entirely, literally realistic…. It’s hard to explain but it’s a feeling people get when they watch it.”


When it comes to the main challenges they faced, the directors differentiate between the fun challenges and the boring ones.

“The fun challenges are always staying true to the sensibilities of the show – the weird faces and weird cutaways [of SpongeBob SquarePants],” says Walsh. “We want to do the same thing but make it our own as well. So, we have to figure out what new replacement puppet are we going to do for this take, or how are we going to approach the Dutchman character and make him unique.”

“Another really fun, exciting challenge is to take our crew out of their comfort zone, and push them to the limits in terms of fabrication of set, of puppets, animation, and pushing them to get that pose or that style of animation, and they’re like, ‘but wait a minute... don’t do that to me. Stop it,’” adds Caballero.

One of the key technical (boring) challenges, was working with black lights on set. Of course, characters look quite different under black light than normal lighting. “You can paint the puppet partially in regular incandescent light and then you have to basically do it again in the black light, which is really a pain,” Walsh comments. “Plus, not all black lights work the same.”

Caballero explained that they only had about 10-14 feet of stage space to work with on any given set, which forced them to be inventive in terms of recreating Bikini Bottom in a way that’s still recognizable for fans of the show. “The cool part about it is because it’s Halloween and it’s a different medium, you can push that a little bit more and play with colors a little bit and stage things in more of a theatrical sense.”

“So many of the tricks and techniques that we use in stop-motion are already kind of modified theatrical tricks and or stage tricks,” Walsh confides. “For example, for all the ‘flower clouds’ that you see in Bikini Bottom, we’re using the little spotlights with gobos on the front with the flower patterns on them. We’re projecting them through layers of like bridal veil material on to the back wall so they get this wispy, ethereal quality. That’s something you can only do in this medium.”

Caballero explained that they also used rod puppets and marionettes. There will also be a 2D sequence near the end, designed by Sally Cruikshank.

“We get bored easy and we like to do things that challenge us a little bit so we can have some fun doing it because if you can’t have fun doing stop motion, then don’t do it,” says Walsh. “It’s really labor intensive and so you really have to commit to it. You have to have a sincere feeling about it otherwise stop motion will destroy you. If we didn’t love it so much, we wouldn’t do it.”

“I just saw the little '1' on my DM, so I swiped over and I was like 'Um.' It was literally like when you're reading a script and they go 'Dot, dot, dot.' That was me," Breanna tells J-14.

A singer herself, Breanna is a huge fan of Justin’s music, especially “I’ll Show You” from Purpose. Justin sent Breanna “Ur awesome” with a little red heart underneath.



“Justin always sends hearts,” added Breanna. “After every message, he sends a heart after. I think that's kind of his thing. I kind of evolved and I do that, too, now.”

But how does someone even respond to one of the biggest pop stars in the world complementing you? According to Breanna, there’s a lot of trial and error.

She told J-14, “I kept sending responses and then un-sending them. I was so nervous I was gonna make a bad impression. I ended up saying 'Thanks so much, I love your music.'”

It turns out that the feeling is mutual. Justin told Breanna how much he likes her voice and tone – a huge compliment coming from him. Now, they’re kind of like Instagram friends. Since then, Breanna and Justin have a had a few conversations and she says that “he goes on [her] Instagram sometimes and checks out some of [her] videos.” Breanna’s Instagram is full of her singing covers of popular songs or songs from her hit Nickelodeon show, School of Rock.

School of Rock season three is returning with new episodes soon and J-14 got the scoop on what fans should expect straight from the star herself.

“We get to do this amazing huge performance at the end of this season,” Breanna, who plays Tomika, teased. “I can't say why, but it's huge and it's probably one of my favorite performances that we've done.”

Even though season three will be full of original songs, the huge performance features a song fans everywhere will know, but you’ll just have to wait and see! Breanna says “Anyone who knows the song is going to be like 'Yes!'”

The 19 partners cover a wide range of categories with initial product lines in stores now and further lines to launch in the lead up to Christmas. More agreements are at the contracting stage with NVCP hoping to announce over 20 JoJo licensees by the end of the year.

London, 9th October 2017 –Nickelodeon and VisitBlackpool have announced that Professor Green is set to perform at Nickelodeon’s SLIMEFEST on Saturday 21st October at The Arena, Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Families can visit nick.co.uk/slimefest for more information.

With two weeks to go until Blackpool gets slimey, Professor Green is the last act to be confirmed for the star-studded line up of sold-out SLIMEFEST shows across the weekend. He’ll be joined by Matt Terry, Five After Midnight, JoJo Siwa, Diversity, School of Rock stars Breanna Yde and Ricardo Hurtado and hosts Jordan Banjo and Perri Kiely.

With two top 10 albums, the rapper, songwriter and television personality is also the co-host of Channel 5’s Lip Sync Battle UK and has fronted numerous documentaries for BBC about issues affecting modern Britain. He’s currently working on new music for 2018.

Professor Green said: “I’m so excited to be up in Blackpool for this year’s SLIMEFEST and can’t think of a better way to enjoy music than with lots and lots of slime!”.

Nicktoons UK To Premiere "Monsters + Mutants" "Tales Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" Story Arc From Monday 23rd October 2017

Nicktoons UK and Ireland will be treating viewers to brand-new episodes of Nickelodeon's season five anthology series, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, including the brand-new "Monsters + Mutants" story arc, weekdays at 8:30am from Monday 23rd October 2017, as part of Nicktoons' October Halloween Half-Term line-up!


Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles captures seven distinct stories from the hero brothers’ past and future, including their early days in New York City, encounters with villains and friends, and a peek into their distant, but wild future. Throughout the season, fans can expect to see both new and familiar friends and foes as each tale unfolds.


In the "Monsters and Mutants" storyarc, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo face off iconic Universal monsters such as the Mummy, Dracula, the Werewolf, and Dr. Frankenstein!

"Wanted: Bebop & Rocksteady" will wrap up Nickelodeon's CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series before the debut of the Nickelodeon's brand-new 2D-animated TMNT series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is expected to launch during Autumn/Fall 2018. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will follow the Heroes in A Half-Shell as they encounter new allies and villains and discover a magical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City. In the brand-new The Loud House Halloween special "Tricked!", for Halloween, Lincoln and Clyde have scoped out a fancy neighborhood to make their dreams of scoring full-size candy bars a reality! Meanwhile, Lucy is putting on a haunted maze and the younger girls scheme to get maximum candy!

NICKELODEON'S BRAND-NEW SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS HALLOWEEN STOP-MOTION ANIMATION SPECIAL: THE LEGEND OF BOO-KINI BOTTOM PREMIERES MONDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2017 ON NICKTOONS UK & IRELAND



Nickelodeon UK & Ireland treats viewers to a spooky stop-motion special with the premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, on Monday 23rd October 2017 at 9:00am on Nicktoons! The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom tells the story of the Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray) coming to Bikini Bottom to make sure everyone in town is scared--especially SpongeBob, who seems to be unflappable in his belief that spooky things are actually funny.

Inspired by the visual style of classic stop-motion animation TV specials, Bikini Bottom is decked out for Halloween and features Sandy's treedome as a mad scientist's lab, including a giant remotely operated Acorn Monster; Mr. Krabs' restaurant as "The Horrors of the Chum Bucket," displaying scenes of Plankton torturing food; and Plankton's restaurant as "The Horrors of the Krusty Krab," telling the story of Mr. Krabs turning customers into Krabby Patties and more.



The characters wear Halloween costumes, with SpongeBob as a flower, Patrick as a knight, Sandy as a mad scientist, Mr. Krabs as a dollar bill, Plankton as a devil, Squidward as himself, and Karen as a cat. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom features an original song, "The Scare Song," written by Mr. Lawrence, music by Eban Schletter and performed by the Flying Dutchman's crew of pirate ghosts.

The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom was produced at Screen Novelties, a Los Angeles-based stop-motion animation production company, where miniature puppets and sets brought Bikini Bottom to life in three dimensions. The production featured 27 unique sets, across five stages, where 15 boxes of breakfast cereal were used to create texture on Bikini Bottom's coral reefs; eight pounds of glitter were used to decorate SpongeBob's Halloween pineapple house; hundreds of popsicle sticks created the planks of the rollercoaster track that Patrick and SpongeBob ride; and "black lights" were used to create a fluorescent glow across the puppets and sets.

The special features various production techniques including: stop-motion puppet animation, marionette puppeteering, hand puppets and 2D hand-drawn animation designed by Sally Cruikshank.

Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller are co-executive producers on SpongeBob SquarePants. The special was written by Mr. Lawrence, with Brian Morante serving as the storyboard director and Jennie Monica as producer. The special is being directed by Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh, and produced by Chris Finnegan of Screen Novelties.

This is the second time Nickelodeon has partnered with Screen Novelties on a SpongeBob SquarePants stop-motion episode. SpongeBob SquarePants: It's a SpongeBob Christmas! debuted December 2012 and featured Plankton turning everybody in Bikini Bottom from nice to naughty.

Viewers can visit the SpongeBob SquarePants page on Nicktoons.co.uk, the Nickelodeon Play app, along with the SpongeBob Facebook page and SpongeBob Instagram, to get an exclusive look at the series.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom will make its world debut on Nickelodeon USA on Friday 13th October 2017 at 7:00pm (ET/PT).

Leading up to the premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, fans can catch brand-new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants weekdays at 7:30am on Nicktoons UK & Ireland.

Following its premiere on Nicktoons UK & Eire, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom will receive encores in the run-up to Halloween.

SpongeBob SquarePants is voiced by Tom Kenny as SpongeBob SquarePants, an incurably optimistic sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea; Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick Star, SpongeBob's silly best friend; Roger Bumpass as Squidward, an aloof cashier of The Krusty Krab and SpongeBob's neighbor; Clancy Brown as Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob's boss and greedy owner of The Krusty Krab; Carolyn Lawrence as Sandy Cheeks, Bikini Bottom's only resident rodent aquanaut and scientist; and Mr. Lawrence as Plankton, owner of the Chum Bucket and chief rival of Mr. Krabs.

SpongeBob SquarePants is executive produced by creator Stephen Hillenburg, who previously worked as a writer, director and creative director on Nickelodeon's animated series Rocko's Modern Life. Hillenburg graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a master's degree in experimental animation and his undergraduate degree, from Humboldt State University, was in natural science with an emphasis in marine biology. Hillenburg executive produced his first feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, which debuted Nov. 19, 2004 and his second theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, hit theaters Feb. 6, 2015. The series is produced at Nickelodeon in Burbank.
