ViacomCBS Enters Strategic NFT Partnership with RECUR

Multi-year pact will offer innovative digital collectables across the ViacomCBS portfolio

NEW YORK--October 13, 2021--ViacomCBS Inc. (NASDAQ: VIACA, VIAC) today announced a strategic partnership with leading non-fungible token (NFT) company RECUR to create a fan-focused platform that will bring the company’s iconic IP and cherished franchises that transcend generations to the space. Through this agreement, ViacomCBS and RECUR will create a unified environment where fans can buy, collect and trade NFTs as digital products and collectables across ViacomCBS' leading portfolio of consumer brands, including Nickelodeon, BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Paramount Pictures and Showtime Networks Inc.

Launching in the spring of 2022 and rooted in community building, this space will encourage peer-to-peer engagement and facilitate innovative ways for users to unlock new experiences.

RECUR designs and develops on-chain experiences that allow individuals to buy, collect and resell NFTs as digital products and collectables. In an approach to reimagine the NFT market, RECUR has created a seamless process for brands to reach the widest-possible range of distribution.

Founded by crypto industry expert Zach Bruch and digital licensing industry pioneer Trevor George, RECUR is a technology company that designs and develops on-chain branded experiences that allow fans to buy, collect, and re-sell digital products and collectibles (NFTs). RECUR will be chain agnostic and is fundamentally changing the NFT market by creating and setting the standard for a decentralized recurring royalty, creating the widest distribution and reach for NFTs minted on their platform.

In the spring of 2022, ViacomCBS is planning to debut an NFT platform, featuring characters from brands including BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures and Showtime, in partnership with startup Recur. “This is definitely an opportunity for us to continue to monetize our library – both for the rare collector and the common collector,” says Pam Kaufman, president of ViacomCBS Consumer Products.

ViacomCBS, for now, is mum on what NFTs will be available at launch. But Kaufman rattles off a list of fan-favorite properties the company has licensing rights to, including Star Trek, “SpongeBob SquarePants,” “Blue’s Clues,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “The Godfather” movies. “I think we have some of the most in-demand consumer IP out there in the entertainment industry,” she says.


Update (12/10) -  Andy Milonakis has hinted of a NFT collaboration between Goat Soup, Recur and Nickelodeon! Goat Soup is a fully on-chain Genesis project by Milonakis. The utility includes invites to parties, events, IRL art shows, merch as well as occasionally free airdrops.

ViacomCBS futurist reveals how NFTs and interactive entertainment are evolving at the company that created MTV, 'an original metaverse'

ViacomCBS futurist Ted Schilowitz explores new tech and its applications for audiences and companies.

There's a "generational" difference in how concepts like NFTs and the metaverse are accepted, he said.

ViacomCBS has ventured into interactive with Nickelodeon NFL simulcasts featuring SpongeBob Squarepants.

Ted Schilowitz has kissed a lot of frogs.

As ViacomCBS' futurist — a title in the vein of Silicon Valley visionaries who do similar prophesizing — Schilowitz calls himself a "professional frog kisser," trying on new tech and seeing what has applications for industrialists and consumers down the road.

"You're responsible for looking at things and having, effectively, the most open mind of the whole company," he told Insider. "Everything might have some degree of value, or a tremendous amount of value. And the only way you're going to know that is to get out there and test the waters: explore, talk to the people using the technology, see if it feels like there's a there there."

One frog Schilowitz prospected some years ago was a virtual reality startup in Irvine, California. He started milling around its offices, "enamored" of its tech, and later on, noticed Mark Zuckerberg doing the same. Facebook's founder would eventually acquire the company known as Oculus in a 2014 acquisition valued at $2 billion.

ViacomCBS, which houses myriad cable channels and SpongeBob, may not spring to mind as a company on the bleeding edge of technological advancement. But Viacom was the "original innovator on how to evolve television," Schilowtiz suggested, creating 24-hour cablers such as MTV and Nickelodeon and offering viewers more choices than ever before.

"MTV is absolutely an original metaverse," he said. "Always on, always accessible, and finding a very targeted audience that could grow organically."

His company's steps into interactive entertainment have thus far taken the shape of a square, or rather, SpongeBob SquarePants, with Nickelodeon simulcasting a January 2021 Bears-Saints game featuring an augmented-reality layer that located touchdowns in the "slime zone." The concept was so popular that the kids' cabler repeated the stunt with the 49ers-Cowboys matchup.

There's also the company's foray into the NFT space, announced last fall — a multiyear partnership with Recur to create tokens based on IP from ViacomCBS' spectrum of brands, from BET to Comedy Central to Paramount Pictures.

ViacomCBS is not the only Hollywood player exploring the metaverse and NFTs. Fox is distributing "Masked Singer" and WWE NFTs, while producer Dick Wolf has partnered with Curio to create an NFT-powered detective storytelling group.

Despite the emergence of streaming and the broad acceptance of iTunes and other digital platforms, the idea of forking over cash (or crypto) for cyber collectibles is still a bit of a tough sell — which Schilowitz considers a "generational" obstacle.

"If you look at kids that are teenage or preteen years, their digital lives are such a big and well-defined part of their daily existence, that they do not create a definitional break between their digital personalities, their digital representation, and the real representation," he said.

"In my late 50s, I have to put real, considered, concerted energy every day in trying to think and act and function like a 16-year-old person," said Schilowitz. "That's kind of what a futurist has to do — you have to pretend you are within youth culture, you have to understand it. So a lot of the people I work around are many generations younger than me, because I am able to glean from them."

Most entertainment executives, of course, are Gen Xers and Boomers well into their 50s and 60s. But ViacomCBS' C-suite backs his mission, said Schilowitz (who reports to chief technology officer Phil Wiser), comprehending that they "cannot just sit back and let it wash over us like other revolutions."

Concepts such as NFTs and the metaverse, still in their early days, evince both skepticism and yearning. But mass adoption of an abstraction — like "owning" a copy of a movie on a streaming service — is nothing new.

"Humans like shared constructs," said Schilowitz. "We, as a human race, are really good at building a reality and saying, 'This is worth something.' And we've done it for many, many generations, going all the way back to the earliest stages of fine art or religious artifacts or anything like that."

He acknowledges that this all can sound a little pie-in-the-sky.

"My job, firmly, lives in the realm of nonsense," said Schilowitz, "until the day that it's not nonsense."

JC Acosta Appoints New ViacomCBS Leadership Team in Latin America

Within days of joining the leadership ViacomCBS Networks International's (VCNI) leadership in Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal and France), Africa and the Middle East, JC Acosta has appointed key leadership positions in Latin America, ttvnews is reporting.

Firstly, ViacomCBS Networks Latin America will now be structured in two new strategic geographic hubs: Latin America North & Brazil and Latin America South.

The Latin America North and Brazil area will comprise Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and the rest of LATAM (excluding Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay) and will be led by Eduardo Lebrija.

In addition to this new position, Lebrija will expand his current position as Executive Vice President (EVP) Chief Commercial Officer to include the newly created cluster, overseeing all commercial and revenue strategies.

Meanwhile, the LatAm South hub, comprising of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, will be led by Dario Turovelzky. Turovelzky will lead the entire ViacomCBS ecosystem in LatAm South, overseeing Telefe, the recently acquired Chilevisión and the ViacomCBS portfolio of brands.

Both hub leaders will report to Acosta.

In addition to the new hub structure and leaders, the new cluster will also be led by the following key individuals:

- Susana Sala has been appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO). In her new role she will oversee the operations and strategic services of the Southern Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa cluster, including BALA, Communications, Finance, Human Resources and Technology, and will report to Acosta.

- Guadalupe Cortes has been appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO). She will expand her current financial responsibilities to include Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa, with a dual reporting to Susana Sala.

- Bryan Schiller will continue to lead strategy and M&A and will expand his role in Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa. In addition, Bryan will execute operational strategy, M&A, joint ventures and strategic alliances in linear and digital TV distribution across the group, reporting to Acosta.

- Tatiana Rodriguez will be appointed Head of Content, Marketing and Commercial Solutions for Southern Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, reporting to Acosta. This new cross-functional role will oversee the global brand strategy and marketing, monetise brands through commercial marketing and oversee content and marketing for streaming.

- German Groba is appointed Brand Head of MTV Entertainment Brands for the entire cluster, including Northern LATAM, Southern LATAM and Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa, reporting to Tatiana Rodriguez.

- Migdalis Silva is appointed Nickelodeon Brand Lead for the LATAM North and LATAM South Hubs, reporting to Tatiana Rodriguez.

- Federico Cuervo will continue as Director of ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) LATAM, including the newly acquired TeleColombia & TeleMéxico Studios.

Dec. 9, 2021 – Paramount+ today introduced Live Channels, a new product feature that curates the most popular shows and movies on the service in linear channels, allowing subscribers to sit back and start streaming premium content. This new offering launches today with a collection of themed channels inspired by the service’s most-streamed genres, such as Kids & Family Fun, Crime & Justice and Reality TV: Competitions, as well as fan-favorite franchises, such as PAW PATROL and STAR TREK.

The thoughtfully programmed channels, which highlight the diversity and depth of Paramount+, will minimize consumer search time and foster discovery of new programming. The first group of channels launching today offers something for everyone and includes:

Hasbro Announces 'Learn with Peppa', A New Peppa Pig Early Years Learning Program

Hasbro is launching the program with the learning app in 2022 as the publishing program with Ladybird launches in January 2023

Hasbro, Inc., a global toy and entertainment company, has announced “Learn with Peppa” – a major new brand extension to help promote early years learning. Towards the end of 2022, the program will kick off with Hasbro’s in-house developed learning app. The offering will expand in January 2023 through an extensive publishing program with Ladybird, an imprint of Penguin Random House, in English speaking markets outside of North America, with the publisher managing rights for most other languages as well. “Learn with Peppa” will also offer a new range of play experiences that can help deliver educational benefits. The rollout will be supported with content and marketing plans.

“Our research has shown that families all over the world turn to loved and trusted brands like Peppa Pig to help support them in their child’s early years development and learning,” said Esra Cafer, SVP, Global Brand Management at Hasbro. “Themes of early years learning feature regularly in the show’s storylines, so the ‘Learn with Peppa’ program feels a natural expansion for the brand. We are excited to bring this initiative to life to help kids have fun and learn alongside their favorite animated characters.”

“Early years learning is such a crucial time for parents and their young ones, and we’re excited to help make those moments easier with the ‘Learn with Peppa’ program,” said Casey Collins, GM & SVP, Global Licensed Consumer Products at Hasbro. “This sector opens up a huge door for the brand and allows us to create all sorts of products and interactive experiences for kids. Early education is an extremely important category for Peppa Pig, and we envision so many great opportunities to come out of this new program. I am certain families will be excited for what’s to come.”

The "Learn with Peppa" app will provide a preschool education-based learning experience for kids aged 3-5, and their grownups, that combines the humour and appeal of Peppa Pig with a carefully crafted, learning framework to help support early childhood development and encourage kids to be active, engaged, and eager learners. It will help preschoolers embrace learning through exploration, creativity, humour and play; with learning activities that adapt to a child’s experience and development.  The app will complement the series offered by Ladybird so kids can enjoy them together and independently.

The Ladybird publishing plan will offer more than 80 titles within its first year of launch, including phonics books in five levels, as well as novelty, board and activity books covering a range of early learning concepts. Working in tandem with the “Learn with Peppa” app, the Ladybird “Learn with Peppa” publishing program will provide engaging educational content to support every child’s early development.

Developed by early years specialists, “Learn with Peppa” provides young fans and their parents with high-quality learning support, whilst bringing the power and fun of Peppa to early years development through a full spectrum of topics structured learning experience for our worldwide fan base.

Peppa is trusted by parents to help deliver fun learning experiences for their little ones. From friendship, sharing, creative play, ABCs, weather, seasons, colours and more, early years learning is truly at the heart of Peppa Pig content and a core part of the brand’s DNA.

More information about “Learn with Peppa” will be announced in the coming months.

This focus on early education follows a 104-episode renewal earlier this year, as original Peppa Pig creator Astley Baker Davies (ABD) handed the production reins over to Karrot Animation.

Ladybird Is Ready to Learn with Peppa

Hasbro, the licensor of Peppa Pig since its acquisition of Entertainment One (eOne) in 2019, is launching an early-years educational initiative called Learn with Peppa. The program includes a Hasbro-produced app and an extensive global publishing program from Penguin Random House U.K.’s Ladybird imprint, Peppa’s master publishing licensee outside North America.

While most Peppa Pig publishing incorporates an element of learning, as the long-running TV show does, this is a more formal program crossing multiple subject areas that children progress through, step-by-step, at their own pace, measuring their results along the way. “It’s sort of a hybrid that lies between formal curriculum and soft learning,” said Michael Kelly, v-p global publishing. “The intent is to provide children and parents with a more structured learning experience.”

“There is all the excitement of reading and engaging with your favorite characters, along with an age-appropriate pedagogic structure,” said Amy Anderson, editorial director at Ladybird. “You’re steadily building skills in an age-appropriate way.”

The app will be the first component introduced, in late 2022, and complements the books. “We wanted a broad program people could interact with in different ways,” Kelly said, noting that parents can make the decision about whether to use books, audio, the app, or some combination, depending on their child’s learning style and interests.

Ladybird’s publishing program will include 80 titles within the first year. The company’s Peppa Pig list is the largest licensed preschool publishing range in the U.K., with more than 15 million books sold in that country as of September 2021. The new initiative will be differentiated through its own distinct look-and-feel, according to Anderson, and will use the character of Madame Gazelle, Peppa’s teacher, to help guide children through the books and highlight learning opportunities.

The program will feature formats including five levels of phonics books—set for a January 2023 release and accounting for 70 of the initial 80 titles—with 10 activity, audio, board, and novelty books to follow in spring 2023. In addition to reading, the books will cover academic subjects such as basic math, exploration of the world (basic science), and handwriting; concepts such as colors; and social-emotional learning topics such as friendship and sharing. Content across subjects will integrate life skills, such as getting dressed; creativity and imagination; and physical activities when possible. There will also be cross-curricular links between the different subjects as well.

“It’s a big launch to be sure,” Kelly said. The reason is twofold. First, the partners wanted to introduce a full program out of the gate so parents and children could have options and decide what subject and level is right for them. Second, Peppa’s popularity can sustain a large program. “Parents and kids love Peppa and want to interact with her,” Kelly explained.

Ladybird has English-language rights, excluding North America, and will manage rights for most other languages. Anderson said Ladybird is working to make the program flexible enough to work in different markets, as well as collaborating with its publishing partners to ensure the educational content is tied to early-learning norms in their respective regions. Learn with Peppa does not yet include North America, but Kelly said an announcement about that market is likely forthcoming early next year.

The hope is that educators as well as parents and caregivers embrace the program. Ladybird is developing supporting materials such as PDFs and blog posts, not just to guide parents but for teachers to use in the classroom. “We’re thinking about it as broadly as possible,” Anderson said.

Ramsey Naito and Shari Redstone Named In The Hollywood Reporter's 2021 Women in Entertainment Power 100 List

The Hollywood Reporter has named Ramsey Naito, President of Animation and Development, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation and Shari Redstone, Chair, ViacomCBS; President, National Amusements in the publication's Annual(ish) Women in Entertainment Power 100 list!

"Ramping up output while still laboring through the pandemic, the women of the entertainment industry worked doubly hard in 2021, so it's only fair they be celebrated twice," notes THR.


With oversight of series and features, the exec is responsible for IP that ranges from Star Trek to SpongeBob. The Naito-overseen PAW Patrol recently debuted on Paramount+, where kids’ and family content is a cornerstone of growth (more than half of the service’s subscriber base watched some Nickelodeon streaming content during the last quarter, according to ViacomCBS) — meaning Naito’s slate (which also includes a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and the Rugrats reboot) is, well, paramount.


In a bid to grow Paramount+, Redstone’s all-in approach left some bodies in its wake: namely Jim Gianopulos, who was ousted from the film studio’s top job and replaced by Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins. Redstone and Co. most recently reached an agreement to unload CBS’ storied Studio City lot for $1.85 billion at November’s end.
