Nickelodeon Premieres The Ultimate Cartoon Trivia Showdown 'Tooned In', Beginning Monday, Feb. 8, at 5 P.M. (ET/PT)

Share it: @Nickelodeon

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--Jan. 29, 2021--The ultimate cartoon trivia showdown is coming to Nickelodeon with the premiere of Tooned In, an epic gameshow that puts contestants to the test to prove their animation knowledge. Hosted by an animated A.I. supercomputer, three kids compete in rounds of trivia for a chance to be declared the episode’s big winner. Tooned In airs Mondays through Thursdays on Nickelodeon beginning Monday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m. (ET/PT), with the season finale airing Thursday, March 4.

In Tooned In, an animated A.I. robot, Nicky (voiced by Rama Vallury, AOK), hosts a gameshow where kid contestants compete in a battle of Nickelodeon cartoon knowledge for the chance to be named the night’s big winner and take home exciting prizes. Each episode features three kids who must solve animation questions across slime-filled rounds of trivia until only one contestant is left in the competition. The final kid will then be declared the episode’s big winner and move on to a special prize round to compete against Nicky and climb the robot’s motherboard for a chance to win the $1,000 grand prize.

During the week of March 1, Tooned In will get interactive with the Screens Up app and on, where kids at home can play along in real time to answer the same questions being asked during the show. The top four users with the highest scores will be displayed on-air at the end of each episode and the top 100 users will be displayed within the game.

Tooned In is co-executive produced by Rich Brown (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Beat the Clock) and Michael Dugan (Trivial Takedown, The Hollywood Puppet Show). Flavia Casas (Group Chat) serves as senior producer with Phil Moore (Nick Arcade, Ryan's Mystery Playdate) serving as producer. The series is directed by Genji Keen (The Dungeon Run, Good Mythical Morning). Production of Tooned In for Nickelodeon is overseen by Ashley Kaplan, Senior Vice President, Digital Studios; and Luke Wahl, Vice President, Digital Studios.

Nickelodeon, now in its 41st year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The brand includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, digital, location-based experiences, publishing and feature films. Greeley native Jeff Eyser makes his mark in the television industry

When MTV launched its “Real World” and “Jersey Shore” series, one of the most interesting aspects of the shows, aside from the eclectic cast, was the houses where filming took place.

From a revamped fire station and old bank to an upscale SoHo loft and Paris villa, each season continues to one-up the previous one with location and digs.

While the locations and buildings are pretty amazing, it is the interior décor that really wows both the cast and viewers.

If you’ve ever watched any of these shows— or even game shows or talk shows —there’s a good chance that some of the décor you’ve admired was created by Greeley native Jeff Eyser.

Eyser owns Los Angeles-based set design company Flip This Bitch.

“We design sets for all types of TV shows like big game shows, we do children shows. We also do houses, restaurants, offices and real spaces like that,” Eyser explained. “We have our office where we design everything and an 8,000 square-foot shop where we fabricate all the custom pieces and signage.”

Eyser has designed sets not only for MTV productions, but also for Nickelodeon’s “Top Elf” and “Ryan’s Mystery Playdate” series, Netflix’s “Tidying up with Marie Kondo,” and Oxygen’s “Bad Girls Club” series.

“We travel a lot and do lots of crazy stuff,” Eyser said. “We were in Athens, Georgia last week doing a house for ‘Floribama Shore’ on MTV and then we were in Scottsdale to scout a hotel that we are going to be remodeling for another show.”

One of the more memorable projects Eyser and his team has worked on involved designing a set for Nickelodeon’s “Tuned In” where they had to create a robot host.

“We had to work with an actual robotics company to develop this robot with an arm and a head using a motion-capture actor to deliver the lines,” Eyser said. “It was really complicated.”

Despite the fun and craziness, there are certain challenges Eyser faces while working in the TV and film industry.

“I work for a lot of different producers and network executives and everyone’s got their own point of view,” he explained. “It’s trying to appease all of the different clients is difficult. But we’ve been doing it for a long time so I think we’ve go it down.”

After graduating from Greeley Central High School, Eyser moved to Denver for four years before making his way out west to Los Angeles.

“I’ve lived in LA since 2006. I love it here,” Eyser said. “I always wanted to live in LA. I got here and never left.”

Eyser always has had a passion for film and television and began working as a production assistant on television productions.  From there, he slowly worked his way up to art direction and production design, eventually going out on his own with Flip This Bitch.

Residents and visitors to Greeley can see some of Eyser’s work at local eateries Luna’s Tacos and Tequila and the new Sexy Sammies.

Eyser and Brian Seifried, owner of Wing Shack, Sexy Sammies and co-owner of Luna’s, have been friends for years.

“They brought me in on Luna’s to design the whole thing and that went so well that he kind of gave me free rein for Sexy Sammies,” Eyser said. “Once Brian got the space, I just kind of jumped onboard. It was such a great project and creative for me.”

Eyser wanted to give the new restaurant a unique vibe and incorporated light woods, tones of green and shiny tiles to exude freshness.

Typically, Eyser would visit the site multiple times to get a feel for the project before creating the designs. However, with COVID-19 limiting travel, he had to rely on photos and videos that Seifried sent.

“It kind of floored me with how well it turned out and how gifted he is to be able to turn a space into such a welcoming, modern, fresh environment without having ever walked in there,” Seifried said. “He really helped embody that modern look for a quick service restaurant.”

“His work at Luna’s equally shows his talent,” Seifried added.

One of the things that Eyser enjoys most about designing for personal residences and businesses is that the work is more permanent.

“TV shows and the set design are all temporary. I’m used to sets being up for like four weeks and then essentially go in the garbage,” Eyser said. “I’m able to go see Luna’s and it’s the same. I’m excited to go see Sammies.”

First Details About Paramount Plus' 'iCarly' Revival Emerge

The first details about how Paramount+ will approach the story of their upcoming iCarly revival have been revealed!

Per DiscussingFilm  that the series will be set 10 years after the events of the original hit Nickelodeon series, in the modern TikTok era of social engagement. However, the focus will not be on Carly becoming a TikTok star, but rather it will explore her journey through her twenties alongside friends and family.

As we already know, Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, and Nathan Kress will all reprise their respective roles as Carly, Spencer, and Freddie. Jennette McCurdy is not expected to return as Sam, with two new characters set to be introduced to the revival: Carly’s new best friend and Freddie’s step-daughter.

Carly’s new best friend/roommate will be part of the LGBTQ+ community as a pansexual character who dreams of becoming a fashion stylist after her wealthy family lost all of their money. The character will also serve to push Carly out of her comfort zone as they confront day to day obstacles.

Freddie’s step-daughter is reported to be social media-obsessed, who sees the older Carly as washed up as well as competition to her small YouTube channel.

Per how sources have described this revival to DiscussingFilm, it seems that rather than focusing on Carly’s web series (which will more than likely still be part of the show to some degree), it will aim to appease the generation that grew up with these characters by having them explore modern problems that young adults face. That being said, from how roles such as Freddie’s teenage step-daughter are being set up, the series looks to be making itself open to a fresh, younger audience as well.

What also stands out is the inclusion of a prominent LGBTQ+ character. This is especially important in a genre of television where such representation has been very scarce until recent years. On Nickelodeon's part, the network has been including LGBTQ+ characters in hit shows such as The Legend of Korra, The Loud House, The CasagrandesDanger Force and It's Pony

In essence, this is what Hillary Duff and writer/producer Terri Minsky aimed to do for the Disney+ Lizzie McGuire reboot, television that approaches the struggles of adulthood while gearing towards the young-adults that grew up with the original program. First announced in 2019, the new Lizzie McGuire would go on to film two episodes before Minsky parted ways due to creative differences. It was later revealed that these differences stemmed form the show not being “family-friendly” enough for Disney+ with themes such as sex. Duff herself eventually plead Disney to move the series to Hulu, a platform that could host mature content for younger viewers with less restrictions. Love, Victor previously moved from Disney+ to Hulu for these similar reasons. Duff announced that no creative agreements could be made and that the project was officially cancelled last December.

It appears that this new iteration of iCarly will strive to get this concept right while opening the door for new fans to be introduced. With all the public commotion that came with Disney’s mishandling of their own legacy teen show, Paramount already has an example of what not to do. Paramount+ (formerly named CBS All Access) will also be free from the strict “family-friendly” rules felt on Disney+. Something that is sure to work in favor of both iCarly and its fans.

Filming is set to begin in March in Los Angeles with Jay Kogen and Ali Schouten serving as writers and producers on the series. Miranda Cosgrove will, of course, also produce.

The yet to be titled iCarly revival will be exclusive to Paramount+, which is making a big splash with new content starting March 4 with the highly anticipated U.S. premieres of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years.

The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati (Garfield, The Musical with Cattitude) is looking for children to make a splash this summer and audition for the company's celebrated summer STAR Program.

As an added bonus this year, all STAR NKU students will have the opportunity to participate in a full-length production of the Broadway hit, The SpongeBob Musical!

Adapted from the iconic Nickelodeon series, the stakes are higher than ever in the staged production, as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.

Producing Artistic Director, Roderick Justice said, "In lieu of our annual one-act festival, I am excited to bring the entire STAR NKU program together with one big Broadway musical. Additionally, we plan to give students a 360-degree experience of the entire process of producing a show and how it happens behind the scenes."

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

Children ages 9-18 (going into their Senior year of High School) can now begin preparing submissions to audition for the renowned STAR Intensive NKU and STAR Camp Red Bank programs with The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati. China Leisure Opens First FEC with Nickelodeon Playtime in Shenzhen

The first Nickelodeon-branded location-based entertainment outlet in China opened in December at OCT Happy Harbour in Shenzhen. Called Nickelodeon Playtime, attraction design company JRA has master-planned the development, which will immerse children in the worlds of a number of popular Nickelodeon IPs.

Nickelodeon Playtime was developed by China Leisure Development Co together with ViacomCBS International Networks (formally Viacom International Media Networks) and experience designer JRA. It is a RMB 30 million project ($4.6m).

The indoor facility features intellectual property including Paw Patrol, Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT). The latter two have particularly good local recognition according to China Leisure president, Linda Dong.

Spread over two floors, the family entertainment centre offers “many experiences big and small,” Dong told Blooloop. “Many are playground attractions, but we’ve put a story through all of them.”

Interactive IP-led experiences

One of the signature attractions is a multimedia experience developed by Holovis for the SpongeBob zone. Guests are given fishing nets and asked to catch jellyfish on three walls, together with SpongeBob and Patrick. The game is as repeatable as it is colourful.

In the TMNT zone, kids become ninjas in training and complete a number of challenges. Such as Raphael’s drop slide challenge, Michelangelo’s halfpipe challenge or Splinter’s ninja dojo training. In the Paw Patrol zone, a focal point is the lookout tower and its 4-metre slide. Children can also activate the lights, sirens and other interactive features in Marshall’s fire truck and Chase’s police car.

Much of the theming was carried out by China Leisure’s own team. Retail and food & beverage opportunities are also featured.

Whilst the mixed-use OCT Happy Harbour development boasts around 1 million square metres of retail space, Nickelodeon Playtime has a modest 1,500 sq m footprint, with experiences spread over two floors. Capacity, therefore, is limited, and families are encouraged to book in advance for a three-hour time slot.

Dong says that there have already been some “very successful, really beautiful premium products” in the local FEC market. “The difference between us and them is we are all about immersive play; really immersing guests into the world of their favourite characters.”

10 new FECs across China

China Leisure is also a partner in the 28,000-square-metre Nickelodeon Universe at the upcoming Mall of China.

However, the scope of the indoor theme park, first announced in 2018, means it is taking longer to develop than Nickelodeon Playtime. Designed by FORREC, it was originally due to open in December 2020. Like the mall, it suffered delays earlier in the year due to the coronavirus. Mall of America/American Dream owner Triple Five is part of the development team, along with the Jiayuan Group.

A family firm, China Leisure plans to develop up to 10 FECs around the country over the next three to five years. Many of these will be allied to shopping centres.

“We will work with top tier IPs to bring their brand and product into the Chinese market,” says Dong. “Given where commerce is heading, I see there being a lot of demand for projects like ours as attraction anchors.”

“JRA was honored to work with China Leisure and Nickelodeon on the design and development of Nickelodeon’s first FEC in China,” said Colin Cronin, Senior Project Director at JRA. “It was a pleasure helping to bring SpongeBob, Dora, Donatello, Marshall, and their friends to life, and we hope the attraction delights visitors from Shenzhen and beyond.

The company’s next project, in Beijing, will be built in partnership with Hasbro. Construction will start soon, and it could open before the end of 2021. JRA is on board again in a design capacity.

Note: China’s coronavirus restrictions were largely lifted in late Spring/early Summer 2020. Nickelodeon Playtime was designed in adherence to Chinese local, regional, and national safety guidelines.”
