Fans Speculate That THQ Nordic Are About to Announce New 'SpongeBob' Video Game

10th Anniversary Showcase | THQ Nordic

To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are throwing a digital party! Join us for the first, official THQ Nordic digital showcase event on September 17th at 9 PM CEST / 12 PM PST / 8 PM BST / 10 PM MSK on YouTube, Twitch, and Steam.

The showcase will be hosted by Geoff Keighley, executive producer and host of The Game Awards, and will feature six new games. Witness the return of legendary franchises and sequels to beloved games. We hope you are ready, kids!

Additionally, we will also release new information and footage for our upcoming games, ELEX II and Expeditions: Rome. If you tune in early, you might also get a glimpse of what our friends at HandyGames have been up to!

Back in March 2018, THQ Nordic got the internet excited when they announced that they were partnering with Nickelodeon to bring remastering and/or re-release a number of Nickelodeon video games produced by THQ in the late '90s and mid-aughts.

The first game announced under the partnership was SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, in which THQ Nordic rebuilt the iconic game originally released in 2003 from the ground up, giving it better gameplay, a multiplayer mode, and drastically improved graphical quality, as well as restored cut content. The remastered SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated was eventually released in June 2020 to critical acclaim - and now it looks like THQ Nordic are about to work their magic on another SpongeBob video game!

During a teaser for the publisher's upcoming digital showcase in celebration of its tenth anniversary, THQ Nordic featured footage from SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, however, fans have been speculating that the publisher is about to announce a new Nickelodeon game, specifically one based on SpongeBob SquarePants.

On Twitter, the publisher has been tweeting SpongeBob GIFs, even writing "We hope you are ready, kids!" in one, a clear nod to the show's iconic theme song. With that in mind, its safe to expect a Nickelodeon-related announcement at this show.

THQ Nordic began operations in 2011 under the name Nordic Games GmbH. It was founded as a subsidiary of the Swedish publishing company Nordic Games Publishing AB, now known as Embracer Group. The company originally had a quiet first few years, releasing and acquiring smaller games and IPs from lesser-known developers that had just gone defunct.

August 2013 was when Nordic made some of its earliest strides: it acquired all of the leftover properties from the bankruptcy auctions of THQ for $4.9 million. This meant the company earned the rights to 150 individual games, including franchises such as MX vs. ATV, Darksiders and Red Faction (though it would trade that IP to Koch Media in 2020).

This would not be the only transaction involving THQ and Nordic Games. In June 2014, the company acquired the "THQ" trademark itself, allowing it to publish games under that name. By August 2016, Nordic had officially rebranded, changing its name to THQ Nordic. The decision served to bring back that well-known name while putting its own spin on it and distancing itself from the issues that led to THQ's closure in 2012. Since then, THQ Nordic has redistributed several THQ games, as well as new titles like the Destroy All Humans! remake and Biomutant.

Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the executive producer and host of The Game Awards, as well as the recent Gamescom Opening Night Live event, THQ Nordic's upcoming showcase will occur on Friday, September 17. It will begin at 9 PM CEST / 12 PM PST / 3 PM EST / 8 PM BST / 10 PM MSK. The show will be streamed through YouTube, Twitch and Steam, and it has been confirmed on Twitter that content creators will be allowed to co-stream the event on their own channels. Additionally, THQ Nordic is working to make sure that all music can be part of the stream without any risk of copyright.

While the stream may be used largely to celebrate important milestones and moments in THQ Nordic's 10 years, there's sure to be some exciting new game announcements.

THQ Nordic has confirmed that the show will feature six new titles. While it has noted that this includes "the return of legendary franchises and sequels to beloved games," the company didn't provide any further details. However, it has confirmed ELEX II and Expeditions: Rome will be showcased alongside the reveals. No other games were confirmed, though Black Forest Games has been hiring for a new project that is believed to be a Destroy All Humans! 2 remake. Otherwise, don't expect to see TimeSplitters or the recently revealed reboot of Saints Row at this event, as those IPs are owned by Deep Silver.

No information has been announced yet on how long the event will be. With only six game reveals and a handful of updates, though, the main showcase will likely last around 30 minutes. However, it appears there will be a pre-show of some kind, as THQ Nordic confirmed that viewers who tune in early will get a look at something new from HandyGames, the team that recently ported SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated to iOS and Android.

With the news that this showcase will also feature "the return of legendary franchises and sequels to beloved games," the stream is sure to be exciting. And it's safe to expect a new Nickelodeon announcement to come at this upcoming showcase.

Following a decade-long lull (apart from a few TMNT and Legend of Korra games), Nickelodeon properties have seen resurgence in the video game category over the last couple of years, thanks to partnerships with THQ Nordic, GameMill Entertainment and Outright Games, which has seen the release of titles such as Nickelodeon Kart Racers, Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2: Grand PrixPAW Patrol: On A Roll, PAW Patrol Mighty Pups Save Adventure Bay and PAW Patrol The Movie Adventure City Calls, as well as the upcoming titles Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray Wins NFL Slimetime Week 1 NVP Accolade

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray made his first Pro Bowl last year, and as his young resume for Canton continues to grow, he can add being a Nickelodeon Valuable Player (NVP) on there too!

Murray was named Nickelodeon's second NVP during the series premiere of Nickelodeon's brand new NFL series, NFL Slimetime.

In the show, CBS NFL analyst Nate Burelson and Nickelodeon star Young Dylan recap the week’s action, including awarding that NVP for the week’s MVP. As part of being named NVP, Murray gets a cool trophy!

It was well deserved. Murray was one of four quarterbacks to throw for at least four touchdowns in Week 1, and Arizona’s signal caller also rushed for one as well.

That was not good enough, however, for NFC Offensive Player of the Week, which was given to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Ludosity Confirms 'Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl' Release Date, Post-Launch DLC

We finally have a confirmed date for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl!

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl finally has its official release date! The roster of classic Nick characters is coming on October 5, and it's not done with big announcements.

In an interview with Game Informer, Ludosity CEO Joel Nyström confirmed the big cartoon brawl will head to consoles and PC early next month. It's not the first time we've heard this, since it appears Nintendo accidentally let it slip earlier this month, but it is the first time Ludosity has confirmed it.

The official date isn't all Game Informer had a chance to touch on with Nyström. Avatar: The Last Airbender-hungry fans have long been speculating over who will join the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl roster, and who it is in the official artwork, but there are still no straight answers yet. When asked about it, Nyström kept things close to his chest but noted that there will be additional DLC after launch. It's at least a little something to stay hopeful for.

"At launch, there will be 20 characters, with 2 more following soon after. Additional DLC characters will be revealed after that. Stay tuned!," said Nyström.

When asked about who might we expect from the Avatar series or The Legend of Korra to be part of the roster, Nyström teased "[h]opefully, your favorite! All in due time."

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl just confirmed other characters headed to battle, too. You'll be able to play as Ren and Stimpy in an Ice Climbers-like duo, and CatDog will also join ranks as a more cohesive pair.

It may not be the first fighter that comes to mind for future mainstream competitions, but Nick's brawler has some potential. In recent footage, Super Smash Bros. Melee's classic wavedashing technique stood out to the fighter's fans, perhaps securing a more promising future among fighting game enthusiasts.

First Look: WWE’s Mike ‘The Miz’ Mizanin to Guest Star on ‘Side Hustle’ on Sept. 18

Clint Kickwood is here to solve all your problems (as long as its not a busted door)

WWE Superstar Mike “The Miz” Mizanin is guest-starring on Nickelodeon’s Side Hustle, and just like his main job and those acting roles in the (post-John Cena) Marine movies, it’s a fairly physical gig. (As is his upcoming turn on Dancing With the Stars, though in a pretty different — yet just as demanding — way.)

On the new Side Hustle episode "Room For Munchy," Mizanin plays Jujutsu star Clint Kickwood, who grunts out “Kick-wood!” as he kicks down Jaget’s (Jacques Chevelle) dojo door. (Yes, he literally kicked wood.)

Kickwood was “hired by a very sorry young man,” he tells Jaget. That sorry young man was Munchy, Jaget’s little bro. Probably extra-sorry now because of the door.

As Clint Kickwood explains, “Clint Kickwood doesn’t just kick stuff, I fix stuff!” (Unfortunately, not doors, I'm guessing.)

He definitely does seem to kick an awful lot of stuff — especially when he played twins in the movie Double Kick. But his mission here is more one of mending a brotherly relationship.

Watch the video above, which is exclusive to TheWrap.

On Saturday’s episode, when Lex (Jules LeBlanc) and Presley (Jayden Bartels) discover that Munchy (Isaiah Crews) doesn’t have his own room but Jaget (Jacques Chevelle) has two, they go to drastic lengths to make Jaget give up one of his rooms. Their plan backfires and Munchy gets kicked out of both rooms so the kids make a Plan B.

Side Hustle follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex and confident and tough Presley, after fireworks accidentally destroy a boat belonging to the dad of their quirky friend and neighbor, Munchy. Needing to find a way to pay him back for the boat, they devise a plan to take on local jobs in order to make enough money to cover the costs. Using KidDING!, an app created by Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother Fisher (Mitchell Berg), the friends are able to connect with people looking for help with odd and unusual jobs, while Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget makes sure they keep up with the payments. Currently in its first season, season two kicks off (#sorrynotsorry) Saturday, Oct. 2 on Nickelodeon.

Year to date, Side Hustle currently ranks as the No. 2 live-action program on cable among kids 6-11 — behind fellow Nick series Danger Force.

Side Hustle was created by Dave Malkoff, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner alongside John Beck and Ron Hart. Production of Side Hustle for Nickelodeon is overseen by Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan, the co-heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness live-action.

Omar Camacho is Nickelodeon’s executive in charge of production for the series.

Miz’s episode of Side Hustle airs Saturday, September 18 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by an all new Unfiltered at 8:30 on Nickelodeon. Check out a super sneak peek from the all new episode, courtesy of TheWrap, below!:

September 15, 2021 - New York, NY - BET, a unit of ViacomCBS (NASDAQ: VIAC; VIACA), today launched BET Studios, an unprecedented studio venture that offers equity ownership for Black content creators. Propelled by the infrastructure and financing of BET and ViacomCBS, BET Studios will create premium television series and films for an array of internal buyers, including Paramount+, SHOWTIME, CBS, Nickelodeon, BET+ and BET, in addition to select third-party platforms that seek best-in-class content from both leading and rising Black creatives. BET Studios will launch with principal partners Kenya Barris, Rashida Jones and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas.

"The demand for premium content from Black creators has accelerated dramatically as a result of both the rapidly changing media and social landscapes. BET, with our 40-year legacy of celebrating Black culture, and the full power of the ViacomCBS ecosystem - is uniquely positioned to service this demand," said BET President Scott Mills. "As a company with its origin in Black entrepreneurship, we are incredibly excited to create the first major studio to provide Black creators with ownership, creative freedom and the unparalleled partnership and support of BET. I am thrilled to have Aisha at the helm of this venture, and I look forward to our collaboration with our amazing creative partners in BET Studios."

"BET Studios is an exciting and novel extension of the storied BET brand, and we have a structure well-suited to our times to bring top talent into this production company with real ownership," said David Nevins, Chief Content Officer, Scripted Originals, Paramount+ & Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Showtime Networks Inc. "Scott Mills deserves tremendous credit for driving this innovative new business from idea to reality - and Kenya, Rashida and Aaron, could not be a more talented or in-demand group to lead this venture along with Aisha Summers."

"The investment being made by Scott, David Nevins, Bob Bakish and the ViacomCBS team into BET Studios is not only an investment in Black storytelling, it is also an investment in the culture," said Barris. "And while individual success is great, being able to amplify and champion underrepresented storytellers has been equally exciting and this venture allows that to continue to be a key focus in this next chapter of my career."

"There is such power in the creative talent that the principal partners bring to the table and BET Studios' unique ability to tell Black stories at scale," said Jones. "This joining of forces is super exciting for me in the multitude of ways that people of color see themselves represented on screen."

"As a new venture, BET Studios offers an opportunity to expand the brand's legacy of delivering Black stories," said Thomas. "This is a chance to bring nuanced, layered narratives to life, partnering with a forward-thinking team, interested in surprising and engaging the audience."

BET Studios will be headed by Aisha Summers Burke, who was recently appointed Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the new venture. In this role, Burke will be responsible for working collaboratively with the Studio's formidable creative partners and key internal constituencies. Along with overseeing the day-to-day creative affairs for the company, she will also be responsible for the BET Studios content slate and focusing on growing the Studio's production output across both internal and external platforms. Burke will report to BET President Scott Mills.

"BET has long been celebrated for excellence in producing quality programming that authentically depicts experiences lived within the Black community," said Summers Burke.

"With the launch of BET Studios, we are excited to introduce a new model that opens the aperture to a broad array of platforms and supports the full range of content from Black creators.' This entrepreneurial environment offers creatives the opportunity to produce diverse high-end content reflecting all aspects of entertainment."

Prior to joining BET, Burke spent thirteen years at Warner Bros. Television, most recently serving as Vice-President of scripted television for the cable and streaming division of Warner Horizon before it merged with Warner Bros. TV in 2020.

About BET Studios Principal Partners

BET Studios will operate with nimble teams of dedicated staff for Mr. Barris, Ms. Jones and Mr. Thomas. This group will utilize the BET and larger ViacomCBS infrastructure and shared services to support day-to-day tactics. BET Studios will be led by newly appointed General Manager, Aisha Summers-Burke, with Kenya Barris, Rashida Jones and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas serving as principals, and a broad array of creative talent that will partner with BET to launch the venture.

Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has announced the fifth annual SCAD AnimationFest, presented by SCADFILM. It returns this year in a virtual format, running September 23-25, 2021. The online program features three days of special guests, screenings, presentations, panels with leaders in animation, and a curated showcase of student work. The festival will feature the premiere of collaborative student work including two animated feature films from SCAD Animation Studios. The 3D animated Hex Limit and 2D animated The Pope’s Dog  will be shown along with breakout sessions with SCAD alumni.

"SCAD is home to SCAD Animation Studios, the world's only animation studio housed at an elite university, where students write, perform, and animate 2D and 3D films,” commented SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace. “To see SCAD's latest releases—Hex Limit and The Pope's Dog—and enjoy a comprehensive look at everything SCAD offers future animators (including IMDB credits before graduation!), SCAD AnimationFest is THE place to be this September."

We look forward to welcoming guests from major studios and production companies to talk about trends and take us behind the scenes of some of this year's most anticipated animated content.”

The curated programming for the festival represents the expertise and excellence of the university’s degree programs from the Schools of Digital Media and Entertainment Arts. Animation has exploded in popularity in recent years and has become one of the largest of SCAD’s programs. SCAD AnimationFest returns with an insight into the industry from Nickelodeon, Marvel and more

Savannah College of Art and Design is presenting the fifth annual SCAD AnimationFest featuring a fresh slate of guests, screenings, panels, and presentations from some of the most exciting studios and creators in animation.

For three days, participants can take part in screenings and presentations from Nickelodeon, Fox Animation Domination, "Star Trek: Prodigy" and The Harper House from Paramount+, Bento Box, and Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, creators of Marvel’s hilarious "M.O.D.O.K." series.

It should be no surprise that many of the industry guests and presenters are SCAD graduates. Animation is consistently the most popular major at SCAD, and for good reason.

“Animation is one of the most incredible things you can experience,” said Christopher Gallagher, Chair of Animation at SCAD. “It transcends generations, race, and gender identity. It’s powerful, intimate, and playful. At the same time animation is fun, ever changing, and evolving. Just thinking about animation brings a smile to my face!”

Last year, because of the pandemic, the festival switched to an all virtual format. The changes carried unique challenges, but the organizers and presenters not only adapted quickly, but were able to reach more people than ever before.

“We have now mastered and perfected the virtual presentations and the virtual engagement to make sure everyone is as captivated as possible,” said Gallagher. “The level of engagement has exceeded our expectations and we now reach a global audience. Anyone, anywhere who is interested in animation can be a part of SCAD’s AnimationFest.”

Gallagher is a SCAD alum who spent his career working for Walt Disney Animation Studios on Academy Award winning films like "Frozen," "Big Hero 6," and "Zootopia," before joining the SCAD faculty in 2017.

“I knew I needed to create that same studio experience for my students,” said Gallagher. “I wanted to build something that was open to all SCAD students to get involved in from animation to sound design, visual effects to dramatic writing. SCAD Animation Studio is the ultimate collaborative experience. It is larger than an individual course and it elevates students to their true potential. I’m proud to say that we are the first full run university animation studio in the country.”

One of the highlights of this year’s SCAD AnimationFest is the presentation of two new projects from SCAD Animation Studio, “The Pope’s Dog” in 2D, and “Hex Limit” in 3D.

“Hex Limit” is a blend of 2D and cutting edge 3D animation that tells the tale of three witches who race brooms through a cyberpunk city. The film was a massive undertaking that took a year to produce. The interdepartmental collaboration was conducted virtually with students communicating entirely online. Dailies were shown and work was critiqued without the participants ever meeting in person.

“Besides myself, there were 82 other students working on this film and we are a very diverse group of artists,’ explained SCAD Senior and “Hex Limit” producer, DJ Price. “They range from illustrators to sound designers, from animators to compositors, and they were from all around the world.”

SCAD's animation program is named one of the best in the country year after year by Animation Career Review, and SCAD Animation Studio may be the program’s most important innovation.

“SCAD animation is incredible,” said Price. “It focuses on strengthening and widening our scope, that’s our knowledge of software and programs. I think the professors are what really make it special. They really focus on hands-on and one-on-one learning and teaching. Each of them have impressive industry careers and carry priceless knowledge from other personal experience from studios such as Pixar, Disney, or gaming studios, and they share that information with us.

“Beyond that, SCAD Animation Studios, in particular, is what is really special about SCAD animation, because it gives us an opportunity to stretch our legs professionally. It gives us this opportunity to practice our skills and expand our knowledge of a pipeline and see how our pace of work, our style interacts with other artists and what we’re able to create.”

SCAD AnimationFest is open to everyone, so whether you are a student looking to get into the industry, or you are just really enjoying this animation boom, there a three days' worth of reasons to join in. Check out scad.edu for a full schedule of events.
