Viacom and IMG Worlds to Develop First Nickelodeon Theme Park in Middle East

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has announced a partnership with IMG Worlds to develop its first Nickelodeon park in the Middle East which will be within the new IMG Worlds of Legends theme park in Dubai!

A large area accommodating up to 12 Nickelodeon-branded rides and attractions, inspired by hit properties including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is planned to start construction in 2017, and expected to open in 2019.

IMG Worlds operates Dubai’s IMG Worlds of Adventure theme park, which is touted as the world’s largest indoor family entertainment venue. The IMG Worlds of Legends theme park will be adjacent and more than twice the size.

“We are working with IMG to develop a Nickelodeon park within their larger Worlds of Legends theme park which is the phase two of their Worlds of Adventure theme park that opened earlier this year,” Gerald Raines, Senior Vice President (SVP), Global Recreation Business Development, Nickelodeon, said in an interview.

“The Nickelodeon area will be part of a park with other non-Nick properties, including Cartoon Network and Marvel,” he added. Though details of its size are being kept under wraps, it is expected to be one of the largest Nickelodeon parks in the world.

IMG Worlds of Legends will also feature attractions based on Power Rangers and Raving Rabbids.

The new Dubai park is the latest addition to Nickelodeon-branded attractions around the globe, including the recently-opened Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic; Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon in Malaysia; Nickelodeon Land at Parque de Atracciones de Madrid in Spain; and Nickelodeon Land at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in the U.K. Nickelodeon theme parks in the U.S. include Nickelodeon Universe in Minneapolis’ Mall of America in the U.S. and Nickelodeon attractions at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., and Hollywood.

Upcoming Nickelodeon-branded attractions include a Nickelodeon-themed indoor family entertainment centre at intu Lakeside in the UK, set to open in 2018, and a new Nickelodeon Universe at American Dream.

“Our U.S. base is strong but we are seeing the most growth in this sector internationally, where there are emerging markets that are craving Western IPs,” Raines noted.

For Viacom, the Dubai theme park is clearly a significant step in Nickelodeon’s growth strategy in the Middle East, where in 2015 it launched three tailor-made branded channels, two of which, Nickelodeon HD and Nick Jr. in English and Arabic, are on Dubai-based OSN, the region’s leading pay-TV player. Earlier this year Viacom launched Comedy Central with a dedicated Spike block on OSN, and opened a flagship Nickelodeon Store in the Dubai mall.

“Our Arab channels are working very well and our Nickelodeon Play apps are going especially strong in a region where 44% of kids consume their content digitally,” said Raffaele Annecchino, President and MD of Viacom International Media Networks Southern & Western Europe, Middle East and Africa. “We want Nickelodeon to be the top kids’ brand in the Arab world,” he added.

IMG Worlds of Legends in Dubai will have nine “zones” spread over more than eight acres, including dedicated Mattel and Ubisoft areas, besides Nickelodeon. It is planned to open by the end of 2019.

Viacom Names Tom Gorke Executive Vice President, Content Distribution

Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), the parent company of the Nickelodeon brand, today announced in a press release the promotion of Tom Gorke to Executive Vice President (EVP), Content Distribution. In this role, Gorke will oversee Viacom’s Media Networks distribution strategy and partnerships with all domestic affiliates. Gorke replaces Denise Denson, who is leaving the company.

Tom has a track record of creative, successful dealmaking, including several major first-of-their-kind digital distribution agreements that helped launch groundbreaking streaming platforms for new entrants as well as existing MVPDs. He is a thoughtful executive who will be fully empowered to design new and innovative strategies to work with our important distribution partners.

Previously, Tom Gorke was Executive Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Content Distribution at Viacom Media Networks and BET Networks, leading sales and new business efforts for all linear and digital distribution partnerships across BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Logo, Spike TV, TV Land and VH1, as well as Viacom's joint venture EPIX. He additionally played a leading role in navigating Viacom’s evolution to new platforms. Prior to that position, Gorke served as Senior Vice President of Content Distribution and Marketing for Viacom Media Networks, where he was responsible for all of Viacom Media Networks' digital content distribution deals including subscription video aggregators, electronic sell-through providers and other mobile and internet-based content distributors.

Before joining Viacom in 2005, Gorke served as Manager of Strategy and Investments for the CBS Internet Group where he helped lead the origination, analysis and management of a portfolio of investments in internet companies. He began his career as an investment banker at Alex. Brown as a financial analyst in the Consumer Group. Gorke received an M.B.A. and a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Vincent Waller, the Creative Director on SpongeBob SquarePants, has announced the Sponge-Tastic news in a series of Tweets on his official Twitter profile page, @VincentWaller72, that Tom Kenny today reprised his role of 'Patchy The Pirate', the president of the SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club, to film a segment for a upcoming brand-new season 10 episode of SpongeBob SquarePants!:

Nick India Announces Winners Of "Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards 2016 India"

Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan won the Kid's Icon Of The Year award at the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards 2016 India!

Curated by Nickelodeon, the award show, held on Monday 5th December 2016 at Reliance Studios (Film City) in Mumbai, was filled with fun, games, slime, and electrifying performances by popular Bollywood stars!

After receiving the award Khan said, “I was told that as an artiste if I can win the heart of a kid I am a true entertainer. Today, winning this award is proving to that. I am very happy and it is special. Though I was busy shooting, I am here today because this award is by the kids.”

Actress Deepika Padukone won the Best Movie Actor (Female) accolade for Bajirao Mastani while actor Salman Khan won the Best Movie Actor (Male) award for Sultan. Sultan was also selected as the Best Bollywood film.

Meanwhile, “Kala Chashma” from Baar Baar Dekho was named Best Bollywood Movie Song, and actor Tiger Shroff bagged Best Dancing Star award.

Hosted by Manish Paul and Ritvik Dhanjni, Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards 2016 India also featured lots of Nickelodeon's world famous green slime, with many popular stars such as Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, to everyone’s favourite comedian Bharti Singh receiving the highest Nickelodeon honour, a sliming, by popular child actors and Nicktoons characters!

While Varun’s highly energetic performance of all his super-hot songs such as “Saturday Saturday”, “Dhishoom”, and “Manwa Emotion”, among others, was enjoyed by everyone, the actor also bagged the award of Best Entertainer (Movie).

“I have performed at various award shows earlier but Kid’s Choice Awards will always hold a special place in my heart. It was an incredible experience for me performing with the kids,” he said.

Alia Bhatt, who performed with all the toons like Motu Patlu and Ninja Hattori, won the Nickelodeon 'Kamaal Ki Jodi' ('Amazing Couple') award along with Varun Dhawan.

She said, “I am so happy to be part of Kid’s Choice Awards which is the only award show of its kind centred around kids and their choices. The energy and the entertainment at the awards were intense and being surrounded and cheered by kids while performing is an unforgettable experience.”

Nickelodeon's hit animated series Motu Patlu won Best Show on Kids Channel, with Motu being named as the Best Indian Cartoon Character.

Bhavya Gandhi as “Tappu” won the Best Child Entertainer on TV for Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, which was named Best TV Show. Disha Vakani won the Best TV Character (Female) for playing “Daya” in the same show.

Kapil Sharma won the Best TV Character (Male) for Comedy Nights With Kapil.
