'Danger Force' Star Terrence Little Gardenhigh Talks Starring in Nickelodeon's New Show and Working with Taraji P. Henson

Danger Force & Coffee and Kareem star Terrence Little Gardenhigh on manifesting working with Taraji P. Henson, performing, and advice for his fans

Being a superhero comes with great responsibility, as in all occupations wherein people strive for greatness. Whether or not you have superpowers to help you, you make sure to look out for others who are unable to do that for themselves by showing them kindness and compassion and helping however you can. The people of Swellview have a new group of superheroes to protect them called Danger Force. AfterBuzz TV's guest has the pleasure of being on that noble team.

Terrence Little Gardenhigh joined Chae’ Jones for a Zoom interview to talk about Danger Force, being a superhero, manifesting working with Taraji P. Henson, why he became a performer, and a few of his favorite things!

Everyone becomes a performer for very different reasons. It either comes from a need to bring joy to others, even if it’s only for half an hour or an hour program, or because you feel the most like yourself when performing. Gardenhigh said, “I really like making people laugh, which is kind of why I like comedy more than serious roles and stuff. I like making people laugh. That’s one of the reasons.”

Gardenhigh guest starred on Henry Danger as Miles and helped Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) and Kid Danger (Jace Norman) escape a room. Who knew helping Swellview’s superhero and sidekick would lead to gaining powers of his own. When asked if he knew that his guest star role would lead to a spinoff, Gardenhigh replied, “I was so excited when I found out because I thought we were going to be some guest stars. Just like guest star on the show which would be so cool because then I would’ve gotten to meet Jace and Cooper and all those people but now I work with them which is ten times better.”

Gardenhigh made his feature film debut in the Netflix Original movie Coffee and Kareem. Working with comedy legends such as Ed Helms, David Alan Grier and King Bach. He also has Academy Award Nominee Taraji P. Henson as his movie mother. When asked what was it like having Henson play his mom, Gardenhigh replied,

“It was great and I honestly think I manifested her into my life. So I would watch Empire all the time. She reminded me of my mom and every time I saw her it could be on a commercial or it could be Empire it could be on anything, any movie. I would be like ‘Hey, that’s my TV mommy…that’s my TV mommy’ and i just kept saying that and now literally she is my TV mommy.” Which is an example of just how powerful our words are.

His character Kareem in Coffee and Kareem is the total opposite not only from Gardenhigh but his character Miles as well. When asked what was the most challenging thing about this role, Gardenhigh stated,

“I would have to say the cussing. Don’t get me wrong it was pretty fun but saying that stuff to people…it was embarrassing at the audition. Cause I did three scenes in front of these casting directors and that was the most embarrassing thing ever, but they laughed and they said I did a good job. That’s what I’m doing…a job. So I just really needed to talk about what this is. This isn’t me cursing. I’m doing a job.” That’s such a very mature outlook in recognizing how to separate a character from yourself and go into the room and do your best.

Being an actor isn’t always easy, especially as a child actor. There are many times you’ll hear “no” before you’ll hear “yes”. When asked what advice he’d give to young teens and young actors who want to be in the entertainment industry, Gardenhigh said,

“Don’t give up. If you feel like you’ve got something, then keep going. For real, just keep going. There’s going to be a lot of no’s. There’s going to be a lot of not this time but that yes makes up for all of it. I’m telling you it makes up for all of it.”

Perseverance builds character. There’s no better feeling in the world. Working hard for your dreams no matter the odds will make them worth it when you achieve them.

Stephen Kramer Glickman Talks Being Gustavo on ‘Big Time Rush,’ Stand-Up Comedy and More

Stephen Kramer Glickman is an actor, writer and comedian most known for his role as band manager Gustavo Rocque on Nickelodeon's hit musical comedy series Big Time Rush.

Photo provided via Glickman's Instagram.

He was also the voice of Pigeon Toady in Warner Brothers’ 2016 animated film Storks, where he worked alongside Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine Nine) and Jennifer Anniston (Friends).

Recently, Glickman released a stand-up comedy album through 800 Pound Gorilla Records called VOICES IN MY HEAD, and he also hosts a podcast called The Night Time Show.

The Post recently sat down with Glickman to talk stand up comedy, Big Time Rush and more.

For more of the interview including Glickman singing a Big Time Rush song, stories about Snoop Dogg and the answer to the Big Time Rush reunion question, watch the full interview here:

The Post: Stand-up comedy seemed to be your first real passion, before music and acting. What got you into comedy? Do you have a favorite bit that you’ve done?

Glickman: I was touring the country with a very, very bad musical … We ended up in Los Angeles, and the venue that we were supposed to perform at in L.A. got flooded, so we had a month of just sitting around and waiting to perform. The hotel we were staying at had a comedy night where comedians would come and perform at our little, crappy hotel, and so I decided to try it because I had a month to kill and I thought, “why not?” So I tried it, and I had a great time doing it and I ended up leaving the tour … so that I could just do stand up and live in Los Angeles.

P: What was it like playing Shrek in the early stages of Shrek the Musical? What went into creating the show and the character? For those who don’t understand workshopping a musical and the aspects that go into it, can you kind of explain that as well?

Glickman: It was a very interesting experience because the people that I was working with were much bigger in the industry than I was. I mean, I was brand new at the time. I was just a kid, and by kid, I was 26 or 27 years old when I started working on it. I was ... trying to learn what it was like to be a professional. To me, a professional showed up on time and left at the end of the day and worked on their stuff overnight. You know, that’s what I thought it was. And then I got the job and learned that it was so much more. That I would have to show up an hour to two hours before everybody else and warm up my voice and be ready, have breakfast and have the energy to be able to make it through the full day ... Also, in the evenings I would go and watch other Broadway musicals to see how other people were doing things on Broadway, not as just a viewer, but as a future cast member to see how things really worked.

Every day of the week, I would come in and work with Jeffrey Katzenberg, who created DreamWorks, him and Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. They’d be in our rehearsals with Sam Mendes, who is one of the most famous directors in the world, and it was intense, man. It was an intense, extraordinary, wonderful situation, but very intense. I definitely learned a lot, and I learned how to be a professional. I learned how to work.

P: What got you into screen acting and eventually playing such a memorable role on Big Time Rush?

Glickman: I had done a little bit of acting on screen before Big Time Rush, but, you know, a lot of times in acting, you play a small role and then another small role, and you build up over years and years where you get bigger and bigger roles and then maybe you get a big series regular job. That’s usually how it goes, and that’s not how it went for me. I auditioned for Big Time Rush for the role of Gustavo on a Friday, I was cast Saturday and I started filming Monday. It was very fast, and the reason was they had cast everybody already. They had already cast someone to play Gustavo in Big Time Rush, and then they did a table read, and they thought he was creepy. What’s so crazy is that actor has gone on to have enormous success; he is in the show Stranger Things (Brett Gelman) ... He’s a big deal, and I’m a massive fan of him, but thank God they thought he was too creepy to play the part because it opened up, and it opened it up at the last minute, so I was able to get the job. And then the big thing I had to learn was the difference between stage acting and acting on camera.

It’s a fascinating, weird thing. I get asked about Big Time Rush probably a couple hundred times a day, maybe. My Instagram message requests, I get about 200 to 300 message requests every day about Big Time Rush, and most of them I try to answer … but it gets difficult when it’s the same question too much. It’s interesting being a piece of people’s childhoods and being a piece of Nickelodeon’s history, it’s like a significant thing. That’s an awesome thing: to be known as something, to be known as Gustavo. I don’t underplay the character or the significance because so much of the character was built off of my own style … It’s such a meld between me and him.

P: What is your favorite Big Time Rush song and why?

Glickman: The two best Big Time Rush songs ever written are “Worldwide” because it’s a beautifully written song. Everybody that’s singing on it sounds really good. They sound their best, I think, on that song. It’s got a great bridge to it ... It’s just great. Then the other one, “Count On You” with Jordan Sparks, is probably their best song. It was their best music video for sure, I mean, shot gorgeously, and Jordan is a phenomenon. I think the best unreleased song is “Paralyzed” because “Paralyzed” was only in the show, never released on an album. And I’m pretty sure it was never released on an album because they just thought it was too bada-- and it just didn’t fit into the rest of it.

P: What was the most memorable moment of filming Big Time Rush?

Glickman: Probably the most memorable moment from the entire run of the show was in the middle of the first season, we did an episode where the guys sang “Halfway There,” and we didn’t know if we would get a second season. We didn’t know if the show would be a success; it hadn’t come out yet. So we were still shooting, and the show hadn’t come out. When they sang “Halfway There,” our entire crew and cast was in tears. Literally just weeping, watching them perform because we were like “Man, this is halfway to the end of the season.” It was actually the halfway point of our season. So we were like, “This has been so much fun. I don’t know what’s going to happen next. I hope something good happens,” but we didn’t really know. It was an intense moment on set. Everyone really wanted something big and good to happen.

Then the show came out, and it was a monster. It was the biggest premiere in the history of Nickelodeon television by a lot. It wiped iCarly and Drake and Josh across the floor. No television show has ever had the opening numbers that we had on our pilot opening ... Then immediately after the show premiering … we were on set, and they came running onto the set and said “we just got picked up for another nine episodes …” and it was like, suddenly our halfway point was no longer the halfway point. And that was really cool. It was amazing. It was an amazing experience, super cool.

P: What are some other film and television projects you’ve been a part of that you’re proud of?

Glickman: Currently, right now, if you have Hulu, you can go and watch me as Pigeon Toady in the 2016 animated film Storks, which I’m in with Andy Samberg and Jennifer Anniston, and (Keegan-Michael) Key and (Jordan) Peele and Kelsey Grammer. I’m one of the leads in that. I got to work on that for three years … Everyone that I worked with on Storks is so amazing. It was the best job that I’ve ever had in my life, 100%. And look, Big Time Rush was an extraordinary thing. It did amazing stuff for my life, but working on the Warner Brothers’ lot, where every single person in the room is 50 times, 100 times more famous than you, you learn so much. And when you make Kelsey Grammer laugh, you’re like “This is it for me. I don’t ever need to do anything. This is everything.” As a kid, that was my dream, my whole life, was to be in animated movies. And not only did I get to have the dream of being in an animated movie that was a big thing … I also got to sing in the movie, which was really cool, and I got to do a scene where I play all four characters in the movie, and I talk … to myself doing all these other voices. As a fan of Robin Williams and Eddie Murphy, that was like a huge piece of my life. That was awesome.

If you have Netflix, you can watch a movie that I’m in called White Fang, which I made a year-and-a-half ago with Nick Offerman from Parks and Rec, Rashida Jones from Parks and Rec and Paul Giamatti, who is, you know, a legend. That was a super cool experience.

I’ve gotten to work on a couple of cool things. I was in Stuck in the Middle, I got to do that show at Disney Channel. That was kind of a neat experience. You know, I love acting, making things and doing stuff whenever I can. I try to jump in and do whatever I can.

P: What is your main focus right now in life and your career? What projects are you working on now?

Glickman: Right before the big shutdown, I was writing a television show, and my executive producer on the show is Mel Brooks, who is one of the greatest people in history, let alone one of the greatest people in the industry in history of the business. So I got to spend a little over a year developing a show with him in his office, writing on it and working on it was an amazing, amazing thing. And when this pandemic is over, I’m looking forward to trying to see what happens with it and where it gets to go, but that’s what I was doing right beforehand.

Right now I’m writing an animated film on my own, which is a challenge and is cool. Stand-up is on hold. There’s no comedy clubs to perform at, so I can’t really do anything there.

P: What’s something about you that no one else knows?

Glickman: I have a massive toy collection. I own in my home office alone, four to five hundred action figures … and I’ve built and sold little sets for toys. I’m really into making little scaled-up models of stuff. I like nerdy stuff a lot. Comic con and things like that, Star Wars, I have a lot of robots in my home. A weird thing that I have … I have Pigeon Toady, the character I played in Storks, I have a 5-foot-tall costume that was worn at the premiere. I have that in my living room.

Another thing not everyone knows about me: I’m Jewish, and I’m very outspoken in the Jewish community, and I try to do things in my community but also just in my community here in Los Angeles. I work very hard every year to put on a charity event with my podcast (‘The Night Time Show’), and we’ve raised over $72,000 for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. That’s not something that I really talk about very often, but it’s something that’s a big part of who I am: trying to do good things for my town.

P: What’s your biggest piece of advice for your fans and people in general?

Glickman: Don’t underestimate empathy. That is a skill and a part of who we are as people, and if you have the ability to have empathy … you have to try to understand where people are coming from and what people’s story is and what they’ve had to deal with in their own lives that have maybe led them down the path to be the way they are. Realistically, I know that’s not always the easiest thing to do. But it helps us, less Karens, you know — we need less Karens in the world. We need less of that and more understanding. Also, if you have the ability to do something for your community or for people that are less fortunate than you and you don’t do that, I think you’re making an incredibly big mistake. I think it’s important for us to give in whichever way we possibly can.

Which 'You Can't Do That On Television' Episode Could They Seriously Not Air On TV?

In the latest TV Legends Revealed, discover the episode of You Can't Do That On Television that was banned from airing on Nickelodeon.

TV URBAN LEGEND: An episode of You Can't Do That On Television was approved to air in Canada, but was later banned in the United States due to its subject matter.

You Can't Do That On Television was a sketch comedy/variety series that ran on Canadian television and on Nickelodeon throughout the 1980s (it started in 1979 and ended in 1990, with a couple of gap years, so ten total seasons). It's famous for introducing slime to Nickelodeon.

The show was originally intended to be basically Saturday Night Live, only with teens and pre-teens - a forerunner to All That.

Actor Les Lye played multiple roles in the series and the kids would change from year to year. Every episode would be about a particular theme and the sketches would somehow involve that theme.

The sketches were almost all just recurring bits, like one set in a dungeon (with Lye playing a dungeon master)...

or a firing squad (with Lye playing the guy who says "Ready! Aim! Fire!")...

or a burger joint (with Lye playing Barth, the owner of the burger joint)...

or a disheveled Senator at home (played by Lye)...

And obviously, the show is best known for the fact that when someone said "I don't know," they would be hit by Green Slime...

and when they said "water" (or variations of the term), they would be hit by water...

Oh, and by the way, Alanis Morissette was briefly a cast member...

Anyhow, fairly late in the show's run (in its 8th season), they had an episode that Nickelodeon eventually banned from the network!

The topic was "Adoption," and there were a number of gags in the episode of questionable taste, like the Senator intended to adopt kids to use as workers.

The episode aired in the United States, but Nickelodeon received some complaints about the depiction of adoption in the show and they realized that it might have been a bit rough for actual adopted kids to watch, so they banned it from the network (it's believed that the episode aired twice in the United States before being banned).

One of the show's creators, Geoffrey Darby, was interviewed by Mathew Klickstein (On Your Marc, SLIMED! An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age) for Vulture, and he admitted that the Adoption episode probably went too far:

"Speaking of showing a firing squad on a children’s show, did you ever feel then or do you ever look back on the episodes now and feel that maybe some things went a bit too far?

I think the “Adoption Show” went too far.

We ourselves didn’t understand what buttons were being pushed about an episode dealing with adoption. And that was our mistake.

None of the kids were adopted, we didn’t know anybody who had been adopted. That was really us just not being cognizant of the world of adoption.

And so that was a bad show. That was just not being respectful."

It's fascinating to see Darby concede the point. Its believe the show's producers eventually pulled the episode from rotation in Canada, as well.

The legend is...

STATUS: True

Thanks to Mathew Klickstein and Geoffrey Darby for the great quote!

Fishers, Ind. Hosting Citywide 'PAW Patrol' Parade This Week

FISHERS, Ind. — PAW Patrol is spreading joy to a central Indiana community during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic!

If you’re looking for something fun to do with your kids, a no-contact PAW Patrol parade is traveling throughout Fishers this week.

Chase and Marshall from Nickelodeon's beloved preschool series will join the Fishers Fire Department, the police department, and the public works department for a special citywide parade, which will tour throughout the neighborhoods between May 11 and May 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The parade will include a firetruck, police car, and DPW flatbed truck, along with Chase and Marshall.

The parade will not cause any road closures, but Fishers officials say the vehicles will travel slowly in the neighborhoods, potentially causing traffic delays.

- This is a no contact parade—no candy or high fives. Just smiles, waves, and friendly faces!

- Characters will be on the DPW flatbed and will be able to be clearly seen from all directions

- Some horns and sirens will be used.

- Organizers encourage residents to follow social distancing guidelines for parade viewing. They suggest viewing the parade from your yard or driveway. If the parade does not hit your street and you need to go to another street to view, please practice social distancing and spread out from others.

- The parade is weather dependent and may be cancelled due to rain. Follow the City of Fishers on social media for updates.

- Follow Along on Social Media: Follow the City of Fishers on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and check out the hashtag #FishersPAWPatrol for daily updates. Share your parade photos and videos with us using #FishersPAWPatrol.

- The parade is unable to visit every neighborhood and street in Fishers, but neighborhoods below fall within 50 feet of the parade route. Please note that these are estimated routes and may be subject to change due to current conditions.

- For up to date information on the current parade location, follow along with the event's live GPS tracker. You can also follow #FishersPawPatrol on social media for route updates.

- There will not be any road closures for this parade, however we will be traveling slowly through neighborhoods and there may be traffic delays. We encourage residents to use alternative routes as needed.

Ex-Vallejo Actor Lamont Young Hopes 'Danger Force' Role Helps

Young ‘trusting my skill set’

Former Vallejoan Lamont Young was The Butcher, in the fourth episode of Nickelodeon’s ‘Delta Force.’ Young hopes the role is recurring. (Courtesy photo)

By all indications, Lamont Young’s a decent guy. Works hard at as many jobs as it takes.

Bad guy? Well, OK, for work. Which isn’t a bad thing since the former Vallejoan is an actor. And it’s not as if a Nickelodeon show is going full-own blood-and gore … especially in a comedy series.

Actually, Young wouldn’t mind more than a mere one-episode appearance of 'The Butcher', a not-so-friendly character featured in episode four of Danger Force, a spin-off of Nickelodeon’s hit comedy series Henry Danger that ran for six years.

Young considers himself fortunate to sneak in the audition but a few days “before everything shut down” due to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

The actor’s confident his appearance seen by an estimated 750,000 viewers would be a stepping stone to a recurring role.

“I think I did a fairly good job,” he told the Times-Herald last week by phone. “I think there is a high probability I’ll be called back.

Young hopes a steady Nickelodeon gig is merely the results of 20 years of acting “on stage and other things.”

The Danger Force audition was in Burbank, California and The Butcher’s scene was filmed soon after. A week later, the industry stopped.

“Barely snuck in,” Young said. “It was literally a week.”

Young had already auditioned but failed to get another role on the same program. However, the experience led to a more positive outcome the second time around.

The audition room and the casting crew were already familiar, said Young, with a philosophy of “give them your best. Don’t give them what you think they want you to be. Give them who you are and your uniqueness will shine through.”

Apparently, he was right.

“The security guard recognized me. The doorman recognized me. And that happened all the way through. It was a totally different experience than the first time,” Young said. “It was a cool experience. I had suspicions I was going to get that role.”

“I didn’t get the initial role but I impressed them enough to get me a read for The Butcher,” said Young, tickled that his character “plays the most dangerous villain” in Swellview.

In the aforementioned episode four, at The Beating Dungeon, the Butcher hosts Villains’ Night which is attended to by Betty Blades, Lawn Ranger, the Lizard Twins, Dead Bull, Doug the Thug, and other villains.

“My character was pretty pivotal to the episode,” Young said. “Fingers crossed they ask me to come back in. I’m hopeful it opens doors for other things.”

Young is confident another recent audition pans out with the Tyler Perry’s latest series, Ruthless.

“That would be a blessing,” Young said, believing “even that little bit of notoriety” with Nickelodeon “makes your talent look brighter.”

The Asuza resident was in the Bay Area last year, performing in Berkeley Rep’s Blue Eye Shadow. He also wrote and did the art for a poetry book in 2019. With Hollywood dark because of COVID-19, Young’s working on a children’s book based on one of his poems, “Dream of Dreams.”

“It’s reflective of where we are now and looking at things that are important … your family,” Young said, being more “pro-active” in promoting and marketing his talents “and creating a platform in using the arts for healing — cultural, city, community healing.”

Young left Vallejo six years ago, anchoring himself to Southern California.

Vallejo “is still home,” he said. “I still love it, even though I’m trying to do some of the things down here.”

Celebrating his 46th birthday this week, “now’s the time to start making in-roads,” Young said. “Now’s the time to start pushing.”
