New 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Animated Series, Movie Following The Next Avatar Reportedly In The Works

Avatar Studios is reportedly developing a brand new Avatar: The Last Airbender animated streaming series that will focus on the next Avatar after Aang and Korra, Avatar News is reporting.

The series is set in the future after the events of The Legend of Korra, following the next earth Avatar in the cycle, and is slated to premiere on Paramount+ in 2025.

Additionally, an animated movie featuring this Avatar and their era is also slated to be released in theaters in the years after the show comes out. Avatar News notes that whilst they can't give specific dates yet, it "won’t be an insanely long wait."

Update (2/18/23) - Avatar News reports that the new Earth Avatar movie is currently slated for a Friday, October 8th, 2027 release date!

It's not currently known how far in the future this Avatar’s era will be set, but a very rough approximation based on previous Avatars is that if it’s set ~100 years after Korra’s time, it will be in the Avatar world’s equivalent of our world’s present day.

2025 is going to be a huge launch year for Avatar Studios’ animated universe, with the adult Aang movie coming to theaters on October 10th, 2025, as well as this new series streaming in the same year.

Currently it’s implied that the movie is Avatar Studios’ first project of any kind, which would imply that this series would come out after that, at the very end of the year, likely in November or December 2025. There could, of course, be delays, but they’re working on multiple projects in parallel right now.

This is the second Avatar original streaming series coming soon, with the live-action young Aang series premiering 2023 on Netflix. Season 2 of live-action ATLA can be estimated for two years later in 2025 as well, joining the adult Gaang animated movie and next earth Avatar animated series to form the biggest year of Avatar ever.

Update (2/18/23) - A new rumor shared by Avatar News on Twitter has revealed that one of the confirmed films could be titled Avatar The Last Airbender: Hidden Kingdom. This name has yet to be officially confirmed by official sources, so fans ought to take the report with a pinch of salt. Little is known in regard to the plot other than that it will center around the original characters from the TV series, which will likely include Aang, Sokka, Katara and Toph.

It isn't the first title that has been suggested for an upcoming Avatar movie. A Paramount Animation production accountant recently shared information that a future film in the series may have the name Avatar The Last Airbender: Echoes and Aftershocks. As with this most recent rumor though, this has yet to be confirmed by the studio. It could also be the title of another installment in the Last Airbender series beyond this first movie, but that too has to be revealed.

Here's the current Avatar Studios slate:

  • Adult Gaang movie - 10.10.2025
  • New earth Avatar show - 2025
  • Zuko movie - (10.9?) 2026
  • Preschool show - 2026
  • New earth Avatar movie - (10.8?) 2027
  • Currently unannounced show - 2027
