'The Patrick Star Show' Crew Member Looks at Why Patrick's Parents Look Different in 'The Patrick Star Show'

Nickelodeon announced in March The Patrick Star Show, a brand new spin-off from SpongeBob SquarePants starring SpongeBob's BFF, Patrick Star. The animated family comedy series will follow Patrick and the rest of his family as they are constantly disrupted by Patrick’s wild whims and surreal imagination.

Among the members of Patrick's family to feature in The Patrick Star Show will be his parents. However, Patrick's mom and dad have had a big makeover since we last saw them!

In the original SpongeBob series, Patrick's parents are named Margie Bunny Star and Herb Cecil Star. However, in The Patrick Star Show, Patrick's parents will be called by their middle names, Bunny and Cecil, instead.

That's not the only major change. In SpongeBob, Patrick's parents look very much like him, except wearing a dress and having a moustache. However, in The Patrick Star Show, Bunny and Cecil will look totally different!

Ian V., who has a role on The Patrick Star Show and SpongeBob SquarePants crew, recently released an amazing Twitter thread onto the Twittersphere about the changes!

"In response to your BURNING QUESTIONS about the SHIFTING IDENTITY of a certain pair of "Star Fish" parents, I have been authorized by my own authority to undergo an investigation and present the most Plausible Theories to this UNUSUAL EVENT using only HARD FACTS AND SCIENCE. 🕵️‍♂️🧽," Tweeted Ian. The crew member then touches on several theories on what Patrick's parents look different in The Patrick Star Show!:

#1 - Perception Theory: This is just what they look like in Patrick's eyes. He also thinks Squidward is orange and Mr. Krabs is a giant ear of corn:

#2 - Regarding "The Janet & Marty Incident": Patrick assumes whatever starfish is closest to him is his family and we have never actually met his parents:

#3 - Transmogrification Hypothesis: Starfish grow more on-model with age:

#4 - The Artifice Possibilty: The original actors were recast when they showed up late to set one too many times:

#5 - See: Face/Off: The Head Enhancement Clinic had a 2 for 1 sale:

#6 - Highly unlikely crackpot conspiracy backed up by little evidence included entirely to appease a small subset of people that will complain if not addressed: They were minor one-off characters that got redesigned in development when the creators realized they needed to make them main characters for a full television show:

#7 - Timeline Split: Finally, the most scientifically supported and realistic explanation. Yet still...so far from our grasp. So many questions I have yet to ask and then answer and then ask again... Continued tampering with the space time continuum by unknown forces has caused tears in the fabric of reality

As you can tell, the thread is just a bit of fun, and not meant to be taken that seriously. In fact, Vincent Waller, who co-executive produces both series, recently explained why Patrick's parents will have a different design in The Patrick Star Show on Twitter:

"Cecil & Bunny, they are his mom and dad. We felt the original iterations of the characters, while they worked for that episode, they were boring as characters. They were NOT entertaining or fun. These two are so much more fun. I can't wait till you get to meet them."

The Patrick Star Show follows a younger Patrick Star living at home with his family, where he hosts his own show for the neighborhood from his television-turned-bedroom. His little sister, Squidina, works behind the scenes to make sure Patrick’s show is always running smoothly, while his parents, Bunny and Cecil and his grandpa, GrandPat, each support Patrick in their own hilariously absurd ways. The Star family’s unpredictable adventures often inform, integrate, and sometimes even interfere with Patrick’s TV show, but one thing is for sure: his bizarre life always makes for great television!

Initially picked up for 13 episodes, The Patrick Star Show is set to premiere on Nickelodeon this summer!

Longtime voice of Patrick Star, Bill Fagerbakke lends his voice as the young adult Patrick alongside new cast members: Tom Wilson (SpongeBob SquarePants, Back to the Future) as Cecil Star, Patrick’s fun-loving, happy-go-lucky dad who always puts his family first;  Cree Summer (Rugrats, A Different World, Inspector Gadget) as Bunny Star, Patrick’s loving, sea star mom who is a kooky oddball; Jill Talley (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Squidina Star, Patrick’s eight-year-old little sister who sees herself as Patrick’s executive producer for his imaginary TV show; and Dana Snyder (The Thundermans, Welcome to the Wayne, The Penguins of Madagascar, Chowder) as GrandPat Star, Patrick’s genius grandpat, the most intelligent member of the Star family. Summer also voices Grandma Tentacles, Squidward’s grandma.

Additional cast members include veteran actors Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward Tentacles), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy Cheeks), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton).

Marc Ceccarelli (SpongeBob SquarePants), Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jennie Monica (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers of the series.  The Patrick Star Show is developed for television by Claudia Spinelli, SVP of Animation Development, Nickelodeon, with production overseen by Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series, Animation, Nickelodeon.
