Serena Williams gets into deep 'Avatar The Last Airbender' fandom convo on Twitter

The greatest female athlete of all time loves Nickelodeon anime. That’s what fans learned on tennis ace (and new mom) Serena Williams’ Twitter this week when she took to the social media site to crowdsource the answer to a pressing, seemingly circular query involving the elemental bending powers of those in Avatar: The Last Airbender and its follow-up The Legend Of Korra.

Did the skills of fire-, earth-, air-, and water-bending come to humankind semi-naturally, from people watching animals like sky bison and dragons (semi-naturally, remember?) haul the elements in their own way, or was it bestowed upon humanity via the super magical lion turtles?

The latter answer is from the The Legend Of Korra follow-up series, while the former is from the original Avatar. Asking that question digs down into the muddy origins of magic in the universe, and the response was met with, like her serves, nothing but love.

Look:

If this exchange wasn’t awesome enough, here are a few more responses that involve her geeking out or seemingly taking notes for her upcoming sports-based fan fiction:

That’s pretty great, until you realize that Williams is such a super-fan that she actually voiced characters in both series. She played Ming in Avatar’s "The Day of Black Sun, Part 1: The Invasion" and a female sage in Korra’s "Beginnings, Part 1." Incredible.

The whole conversation was a dorky Grand Slam.

Needless to say, the 23-time Grand Slam singles winner made the night for a couple of Avatar fans!

This isn’t the first time Williams has expressed her fascination with the series, either; a cursory Twitter search shows that she’s spent the last seven years advocating for the series any time anyone asks her about her favorite ’toons.
