CBS All Access to Build Out 'SpongeBob' Franchise to Make It a Key Part of the Service

Following announcing plans for CBS All Access, ViacomCBS’ soon-to-be-rebranded subscription video on demand and live-streaming service, to debut Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, Nickelodeon's brand-new animated spinoff of the beloved hit series SpongeBob SquarePants during early 2021, Marc DeBevoise, chief digital officer of ViacomCBS and president and chief executive of ViacomCBS Digital, has revealed that the streaming service may have even more plans for the beloved Nickelodeon animated series!

Speaking about CBS All Access shoring up its content library, including with the first 11 seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants, DeBevoise said: “A lot of what we’re talking about is which franchises do we want to build off of to really make the service shine and stand out from the competition,” adding “SpongeBob is a perfect example of that. We’re building out that entire franchise to become a key part of the service.”

Nickelodeon has said in the past that it wants to open up the world of SpongeBob SquarePants. Speaking about the series in 2019, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins said “that’s our Marvel Universe,” adding "You have this amazing show that’s run for almost twenty years.”

While he pledged that Nickelodeon will always make SpongeBob, Robbins revealed he saw ample room to explore other characters. Among the options on the table are to “tell an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or maybe tell a Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story, or can Plankton have his own?” Robbins mused. “I think the fans are clamoring for it.”

Nickelodeon is reportedly producing two feature-length SpongeBob spin-off movies for Netflix. During late-2019, Nickelodeon was reportedly planning a spin-off featuring Squidward Tentacles, SpongeBob's cranky neighbour and colleague, however, this has since been debuknked.
