‘The Casagrandes’ Voice Actor Carlos PenaVega Says Latino Cartoon Characters Have ‘Become the Norm’

In the hit Nickelodeon animated series The Casagrandes , a spin-off of the animated series The Loud House, actor Carlos PenaVega (Big Time RushSpare Parts) lends his voice to the character Bobby Santiago, a teenager who moves into the city with his big, multigenerational family, the Casagrandes. As part of the extended family, Bobby helps his grandfather run the family store. But with 11 people under one roof, things are bound to get a little chaotic.

While it took some time to get Latino characters in animated shows, aside from the problematic character Speedy Gonzales from the Looney Tunes gang, there have been a lot more examples in the last 20 years of TV studios realizing the importance of representation. This includes series like Taina, The Brothers Garcia, Dora the Explorer, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, ¡Mucha Lucha!, Maya & Miguel, and Elena of Avalor, and characters like Soos Ramirez on Gravity Falls and Juan Pablo of Big City Greens, and many more.

“It’s become the norm,” PenaVega told Remezcla during a recent interview. “It’s so cool that we can have a show about this crazy Latin family. I think it’s so important. I’m excited to see that it’s happening more and more.”

PenaVega said he can relate to the Casagrandes because he, too, comes from generations of big Latino families. Although he currently lives with his family in Hawaii and doesn’t see his extended family as much as he would like, PenaVega has fond memories when he lived in Miami of being part of a cohesive family unit.

“We were like the Casagrandes,” he said. “Everyone was always going in and out and we were always willing to help each other. At the end of the day, everyone came to eat at the same table.”

PenaVega said he grew up watching Nickelodeon cartoons like Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold! and CatDog, so he’s looking forward to showing his own kids more of his animated show, especially since he doesn’t have to worry about anything happening that is too risqué.

“TV is really hard nowadays,” PenaVega said. “But I feel like The Casagrandes is a great safe place for kids.”

Carlos PenaVega On His Work On Nickelodeon’s Los Casagrandes And The Loud House [Exclusive Interview]

The magic of having a 9-year old as an adult is being able to stay in touch with cartoons and whatever else kids are into. It’s because of her that I ever really pay attention to cartoons on television. One of those shows that I was grateful to be introduced to is Nickelodeon’s The Loud House. Due to the popularity of this series, they were able to develop a spin-off to that series called, Los Casagrandes. This add’s the perspective of a Hispanic family in the mix of all the crazy daily adventures that we are used to.

Los Casagrandes follows 11-year-old Ronnie Anne, voiced by Izabella Alvarez. As well as her brother Bobby, voiced by Carlos PenaVega. The premise is that because of the fact that their father is working abroad in Peru, they move in with their multi-generational Mexican-American extended family above their Mercado. What is great about this series, is how well they integrate Latin culture without it feeling stereotypical. The many adventures of Bobby and Ronnie Anne for the most part feel like they could be part of any family.

Here is the synopsis for Nickelodeon’s The Casagrandes:

A new home in the city holds big adventures, laughs and love around every corner in Nickelodeon’s original animated series The Casagrandes. A spinoff of Nick’s animated hit The Loud House. The Casagrandes tells the story of 11-year-old Ronnie Anne. She moves to the city with her mom and older brother to live with their big, loving family, the Casagrandes. Starring Izabella Alvarez (Westworld) as 11-year-old Ronnie Annie. Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) as her brother Bobby. As well as Sumalee Montano (Nashville) as her mom Maria. The series showcases the culture, humor, and love that’s part of growing up in a multigenerational Mexican-American family. After moving in with their grandparents in Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne adjusts to her new life living under one roof and over the family-run mercado (local market), which is a gathering place for everyone in the neighborhood.
